Liverpool have dramatically won the race for QPR's young England starlet Raheem Sterling - beating Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham to get him.
The 15-year-old has agreed to join the Kop in a major coup and was finalising the deal yesterday despite rival offers from some of the biggest names in English football.
And it took a personal call from Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish - currently academy director and club ambassador at Anfield - to finally convince Sterling into signing.
Sterling shot to fame after Rangers put him on standby to make his debut - as People Sport first revealed - and the attacking midfielder has thrilled the talent spotters.
Arsenal, Fulham and City all made offers for him and United youth chief Brian McClair was at the last two Rangers youth team games.
But Liverpool, who were always the player's first choice, finally agreed to come up with a deal for him and will pay Rangers around £750,000 up front, rising to more than double if he makes the grade.
United pulled out at the death and insiders in the deal said: "It has all been a bit messy, with various agents trying to get involved. But in the end the kid is going where he wants - and QPR have got a good price." People

Sunday Mercury/Andy Walker - West Brom's Ben Watson tips Neil Warnock to make a success of QPR
- ALBION new-boy Ben Watson expects to see ex-boss Neil Warnock in the Loftus Road dugout next weekend, after insisting that he’s the man to sort out QPR.

The versatile midfielder arrived at the Hawthorns last week on loan until the end of the season from Wigan Athletic.

The 24-year-old has had a miserable time of late with the Latics having tasted just 33 minutes of first-team football in 2010, before yesterday’s match-up with Derby, and he’s looking to use his stint with the Baggies as a chance to put himself in the shop window.

This is Watson’s second spell out on loan this season, having had a glimpse of the madhouse that is QPR between September and January.

The ex-England Under-21 international won’t have to wait long to face his former Hoops team-mates, as Albion travel to Loftus Road next Saturday.

And there looks set to be another reunion on the cards – with his former Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock.

The controversial Eagles boss is expected to cross London and take charge of QPR this week.

Watson admits that Warnock is the best manager he’s ever worked under and has hailed the Yorkshireman as the ideal candidate to help QPR realise the potential that has been stored away ever since the 2007 takeover that saw them dubbed one of the richest clubs in the world.

“I’m 110 per cent sure that Neil Warnock would do a job at QPR, if anyone can sort that club out then it will be himself,” insisted Watson. “It will be interesting to see what happens.

“I loved him, we had a good relationship and I enjoyed playing under him. It was a good experience and probably an experience that you won’t have again. All in all, I had a fantastic time with him.

“He’s got both sides to him. If you put it in for him on the pitch then he won’t have a problem. If you don’t then you have a problem.

“In general, he’s a top manager as he’s proved at this level with the promotions he’s had and it wouldn’t surprise me if he got that job.

I had a great time at QPR so I’ve got nothing against the club and I look forward to going back there.

“Towards the end of my spell there it got a bit mad when the gaffer Jim Magilton got sacked.

“They just need to let a manager get on with it, they need to settle down.

“The set-up is alright but success won’t come overnight and they need to give a manager a chance because at the moment they’re in a relegation scrap.”

Having come through the Palace ranks under a succession of managers, it was Warnock that helped Watson produce the performances that paved the way for his move to a Premier League club.

Watson continued: “Trevor Francis gave me my debut, then Iain Dowie came in and that was when I played some good football.

“But I probably played my best under Warnock.

“When he came in to Palace, my career was at a standstill and he gave me that injection of energy and it all went from there.”

Watson is now looking for a fresh injection of energy with the promotion-chasing Baggies.

Having been signed by Steve Bruce in January 2009, Watson’s time at Wigan started well.

However, the departure of Bruce to Sunderland and the arrival of Roberto Martinez, signalled the start of a misery in Greater Manchester.

“I was injured at the time I got the move to Wigan and then got myself fit and played a few games and scored a few goals. It was going well.

“But then a manager leaves and a new manager comes in with new ideas and new players and I just haven’t fitted into his team.

“Now I just see this move to West Brom as an opportunity to play in a good team and at the end of the day you never know what might happen.”

Before joining Wigan, Watson was linked to a series of clubs, with Middlesbrough and QPR known to have made firm offers.

However, Watson has no regrets about leaving his boyhood club to head to the DW Stadium.

“No regrets,” he insists. “At the time it was the right move for myself.

“But when a new manager comes in he brings his own ideas and obviously I’m not in those ideas at the moment.

“Hopefully now I’m here at the Hawthorns I can play some games and put myself in the shop window.” Sunday Mercury

QPR Official SIte - MICK: SILLY MISTAKES COST US
Posted on: Sat 27 Feb 2010
After an impressive performance at Middlesbrough this afternoon, Mick Harford bemoaned his team's failure to make the most of their dominance as they went down 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium courtesy of two Barry Robson penalties.

"That match typifies our luck at the moment, and I'm sick of saying it," said the R's gaffer.

"Today we dominated much of the game - like we have the majority of the matches I've been in charge - but we made silly mistakes and got punished for them.

"We've got to cut out those sorts of errors."

With the game still goalless, the R's had a strong appeal for a penalty of their own turned down when Lee Cook was felled in the box - and Harford believes the referee got it wrong.

"I thought we were unfortunate not to get a penalty there," he added. "If the referee thought he dived, why didn't he book him?

The home side were awarded two spot-kicks, the first for a tackle by Peter Ramage and the second for a challenge by Kaspars Gorkss.

"I didn't really see their first penalty," Harford said, "but their second spot kick was definitely the right decision.

"We got un-done today by some straight balls at our back four, which was unusual."

Speculation continues regarding Harford's future at QPR, and he acknowledged: "There's a lot of speculation.

"The fact is there's a Manager's job up for grabs, and this is a good Club with good fans and, as you saw today, a good bunch of players too.

"I have openly said that the Club needs a Manager to come in and stabilise the place. If that happens, so be it.

"All I can do is concentrate on the football, and work on the training pitch I can't shed anymore light on it than that.

"I believe the current set-up is the right situation now for the Club to move in the right direction, with the new Chairman Ishan Saksena coming in.

"The Club is in good hands, and they want to take QPR forward."

Sporting Life - STRACHAN HAPPY BUT REALISTIC
Two well-taken penalties by Barry Robson blasted Middlesbrough back into play-off contention after an otherwise stuttering 2-0 home win over QPR in the Coca-Cola Championship.

The double came in the five minutes before the break and gave hard-working Boro control but they were left holding on desperately in the second half as QPR piled on the pressure.

Boro boss Gordon Strachan admitted the penalties had swung the game his way.

"Until the penalties it was a nothing game," he said.

"I was happy with the points and

I was happy with the attitude but it wasn't a great game.

"We worked hard but the game was a bit frantic at times. Maybe some of them tried to work too hard. They were enthusiastic, maybe too enthusiastic but that is not a bad problem to have.

"The penalties turned the game though. There was no question over them and even their people admitted that. And I thought maybe we could have had one before that too for an incredible handball that somehow wasn't spotted.

"But I think we worked hard and deserved that result. We have worked hard over the past few games and maybe not got what we deserved.

"As for the play-offs we are still in there with a chance and in that respect today was a huge result for us.

"The last few weeks have been a great test of our character and we have come through that test and are still in with a shout."

Mick Harford, QPR interim boss, blasted his own side for giving away "silly" goals but insisted his side should have got something from the game.

"We should have had a penalty before Boro go theirs when Lee Cook was brought down," he said. "And we had chances after that too.

"I can't argue with the penalties Boro got. I didn't see the first but the second was pretty blatant and quite stupid really. He's just pulled him back.

"It is things like that that are costing us, silly goals. We started well and dominated possession for long spells, especially in the second half but I think we needed to get a goal back early on after the interval.

"I can't fault the work-rate or commitment of the players throughout and we did well for most of the game but I am sick of saying it, we have given away silly goals.

"I've told them that the work-rate, the attitude, the effort is great and they are playing well but so long as we are gifting silly goals we will get nowhere and yes, we are looking over our shoulder at relegation.

"We need to start playing poorly but winning because at the moment we are playing well and getting beat and that can't go on."

Harford refused to be drawn on speculation over his own position and the prospect of Neil Warnock arriving as new QPR boss but said: "If results had been as good as performances in recent weeks then maybe I would have had a better chance of a permanent crack at this job."

After a bright spell Boro's breakthrough came from the spot on 40 minutes as Robson slammed home a sizzler after Rangers defender Peter Ramage had chopped down Jeremie Aliadiere as he burst free into the box.

And Robson hammered home a second penalty in first half stoppage time after Kaspars Gorkss hauled back Leroy Lita as he burst forward on to a Kyle Naughton chip.

But before then both sides had strong shouts for penalties waved away.

Rangers were appealing on eight minutes as Mikele Leigertwood slotted a ball into the box for the lively Lee Cook and as he shaped to shoot he was bundled over by a David Wheater challenge.

And Boro were screaming for a penalty on 20 minutes after a Gary O'Neil free-kick into the Rangers box appeared to be punched clear by Gorkss.

Both sides had goals ruled out for marginal offsides while QPR twice hit the woodwork.

TELEGRAPH/Rob Stewart - Middlesbrough 2 Queens Park Rangers 0: match report

If Neil Warnock wants an insight into the size of the task awaiting Queens Park Rangers' new manager then he should quickly acquaint himself with a DVD of this contest.

The Loftus Road club may be confident of luring Warnock from Crystal Palace but the manager who has become a promotion specialist will have to ready himself for a prolonged relegation wherever in London he decides to work.

Alan Pardew and Charlton Athletic go their separate waysHere at the Riverside, Warnock's prospective new charges made a bright opening before their hopes of easing their own relegation worries were quickly extinguished in the space of six minutes.

The visitors were all too easily brushed aside by Gordon Strachan's side whose own play-off aspirations are alive again thanks to two first-half penalties by Barry Robson who helped Boro dominate the crucial midfield exchanges.

Rangers tried to shoot themselves in the foot when Kaspars Gorkss appeared to punch Gary O'Neill's free kick but he was let off the hook by the referee and striker Neil Killen who thumped the ball over from six yards out in the 20th minute.

The visitors almost capitalised on their lucky escape ten minutes later when Jay Simpson surged into the penalty box but his rising shot appeared to clip the outside of Danny Coyne's near post.

Rangers were let off the hook again when Jeremie Aliadiere was allowed the time and space to pick his spot at the far post following Willo Flood's cross but the former Arsenal forward before firing wide from an inviting position.

The Frenchman was clearly keen to atone sooner rather than later and won a penalty for his side when he darted goalwards moments later only to be brought down by former Newcastle defender Peter Ramage.

Barry Robson grabbed the ball and fought off the claims of his team-mates such as Aliadiere and Leroy Lita to thump the ball straight down the middle of the goal into space vacated by Carl Ikeme in the 39th minute.

Rangers' caretaker manager Mick Harford saw his charges respond impressively and they almost equalised but Simpson had a rising shot pushed wide by Coyne.

There would be no let-off for Gorkss when he erred again as he pushed over Lita in the penalty box and was booked before Robson smashed home his second penalty of the afternoon in the 45th minute.

Substitute Adel Taarabt, on loan from Tottenham, almost halved the deficit in the 72nd minute with a sweetly-struck 20-yarder but Coyne turned his effort wide before Boro broke forward and Ikeme denied Lita.

Rangers stuck to their task and skipper Mikele Leigertwood struck a post late on as Boro sat back yet Gary O'Neil should have finished off a counter-attack but Ikeme came to his side's rescue" Telegraph

Middlesbrough 2 Queens Park Rangers 0

TWO penalties in seven minutes towards the end of the first half were enough as Boro completed their first ever double over QPR, writes GORDON COX from the Riverside.

The Boro side showed two changes from that which lost at Forest as Chris Killen and Leroy Lita returned to the starting line-up.

Julio Arca and Scott McDonald made way, the latter out injured, the former on the bench where he was joined by Brad Jones who was making his first appearance with the first team squad since December 20. Jason Steele joined Northampton Town on loan earlier in the day.

Mick Harford, naming what he felt may well be his last starting line up before another managerial change at Loftus Road, replaced Matt Connolly, who kissed the game with an ankle injury, with Mikele Leigertwood who returned from a three-match suspension to captain the side.

Former Boro loanee Marcus Bent was fit to return to the bench having been missing with hamstring trouble since February 9.

A quiet start in a quiet stadium gave way to moments of lively play from both sides as the game gradually got to its feet.

Good movement from Boro's front line had QPR stretched and Carl Ikeme almost went down in slow motion to palm away a 30-yard free-kick from Gary O'Neil who has struck a better shot before. But it was the visitors who almost opened the scoring when Antonio German hit the back stanchion with a powerful shot from just inside the penalty area.

Boro created a better chance as the game swung to the other end, but the ball arrived unexpectedly at the feet of Killen at the back post and he hurriedly shot over from seven yards.

Barry Robson was caught ball watching as QPR threatened down their inside left channel, Danny Coyne needing to produce a smart save to grab a low drive from the edge of the penalty area from Leigertwood.

With 36 minutes played Jeremie Aliadiere, playing on the left wing, was presented with a fine chance just along from the right-hand edge of the penalty area, but he shot horribly wide - just over a minute later his pace got the better of Peter Ramage and the ex-Newcastle right-back brought him down inside the penalty area.

Three players wanted to take the kick, Barry Robson won the argument with Aliadiere and Killen and drilled a low shot straight and past Ikeme from the spot with 39 minutes played.

Boro were almost caught out approaching the final minute of the half when German timed a run behind the back line despite looking offside. The home side survived and went on to double their lead in the first minute of injury time.

Another poor piece of defending, this time from Kaspars Gorkss, saw him drag back Lita inside the penalty area and Barry Robson rammed home an excellent penalty time firing high away to the goalkeeper's left.

Half-time: Middlesbrough 2 QPR 0

After a bright start from Boro they fell away a little as QPR upped their game and went off in search of a foothold in the game.

A couple of early substitutions seemed to galvanise that approach, though Bent was given at best a lukewarm welcome from the Boro fans.

But Danny Coyne was rarely stretched as Stephen McManus in particular effected two or three good challenges.

When Emanuel Pogatetz gave the ball away deep inside his own half there was danger as a deep cross looked like finding its target, Bent, until a timely touch from McManus.

Jonathan Franks was given a good reception when he replaced Aliadiere, but it was another change which almost made an immediate impact as Adel Taarabt, on for Alejandro Faurlin, forced Coyne into a smart full-length save away to his right as he shot low from 30 yards.

There was a more routine save from Ikeme when Lita shot for goal from the edge of the penalty area, an effort which carried plenty power but one aimed straight at a well positioned goalkeeper.

Boro were given a let-off 12 minutes from the end of normal time as Leigertwood, unmarked seven yard from and in front of goal, struck low against the base of Coyne's right-hand post.

Excellent work from Franks saw him hold off a firm challenge and drill a low cross into the penalty area, sadly for him, his team mates didn't match his good approach with anticipation and there was no-one in a red short to take the delivery.

Two minutes from the end of normal time Gary O'Neil made a fine run into the right-hand side of the Boro box, but again the finishing touch failed to match the approach as his shot was straight at Ikeme.

*Earlier this afternoon Boro's U18s drew 1-1 with Huddersfield Town at Rockliffe. James Gray scored in the first half and was sent-off on in the second.

QPR Official Site: Middlesbrouh 2 QPR 0

It was the tale of two penalties at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium this afternoon - they were both awarded to the hosts, as QPR lost 2-0 in the north-east.

Referee Mr Woolmer harshly gave the first when Peter Ramage seemed to win the ball as he slid in on Jeremie Aliadiere on 38 minutes, while the second was given six minutes later when Kaspars Gorkss was adjudged to have tugged at Leroy Lita.

Boro midfielder Barry Robson made no mistake with either.

This was in fact a good performance by Mick Harford's men, as the R's took the game to Middlesbrough.

Mikele Leigertwood worked hard alongside Alejandro Faurlin, while Lee Cook put in another solid display.

It was the R's skipper who had the best chance for the visitors, after being teed up by substitute Marcus Bent in the box, but his close-range drive hit the face of the post.

There wasn't much between the teams, but Lady Luck certainly didn't look favourably on the west Londoners this afternoon.

The R's gaffer made just one change to the side that beat Doncaster 2-1 last weekend, bringing in Leigertwood - who was available once again after serving his three match ban for a red card at Peterborough - for Matt Connolly, who missed out with an ankle injury.

It meant that Carl Ikeme lined up between the sticks with Matt Hill, Damion Stewart, Kaspars Gorkss and Ramage in defence from left to right.

Cook continued on the left wing while Faurlin was partnered in the centre of the park by skipper Leigertwood and Akos Buzsaky, with Jay Simpson taking up a position on the right of midfield.

In attack, Antonio German, who signed a two-year contract extension just 24 hours before kick off, led the line.

QPR started in the ascendancy, with Buzsaky's in-swinging free kick from the left and a Cook corner moments later forcing a good defensive header out of Boro centre back Stephen McManus.

In the 9th minute, Cook burst into the home penalty area after great work by Leigertwood and went down under the challenge of David Wheater, but referee Mr Woolmer wasn't interested in the R's winger's claims for a spot-kick.

Three minutes later, Gary O'Neill's 25-yard free kick forced the first save of the game, as Ikeme comfortably pushed the effort around his right-hand post.

On 14 minutes, Cook was the architect of a fabulous QPR move, after he collected possession on the left inside his own half. The in-form midfielder evaded three challenges before picking out Buszaky on the edge of the Boro area.

The Hungarian laid the ball to his right for the on-rushing Simpson, but he blazed wide of the near post from 16 yards.

Mid-way through the half O'Neill's free kick from the left touchline was flicked into the path of Emanuel Pogatetz, but he could only fire over from eight yards.

Chris Killen thought he had broken the deadlock on 27 minutes when he found the back of the net from close range after a neat pass by Robson, but the Boro forward had strayed offside.

The hosts took the lead in the 39th minute from the spot after Ramage was cruelly adjudged to have brought down Aliadiere in the area.

With the Boro winger through on goal, Ramage seemed to execute a fantastic last-ditch tackle, clearly connecting with the ball and sending it out of play.

To the Geordie's obvious disgust, Woolmer pointed straight at the spot to the delight of the home fans.

Robson stepped up and fired the ball straight down the middle of the goal to beat Ikeme and give Middlesbrough the advantage.

The R's responded in fine fashion, however, and really took the game to their opponents in a bid to draw level before the break.

After a great passing move involving Leigertwood, Cook and Buzsaky, the latter fired goalwards from 18 yards but his shot was well blocked by Pogatetz.

With Boro unable to clear their lines, the R's created another opening as the ball fell to Simpson in the area on the right. Appeals for offside were ignored but Simpson's shot was thwarted at the near post by Danny Coyne.

But just as Rangers were looking to get back on terms, they were dealt a huge blow when Woolmer awarded his second spot kick for the host in the space of six minutes.

The match official ruled Gorkss had tugged Leroy Lita in the area, and Robson duly smashed home from 12 yards, picking out the top right-hand corner.

Just before the half ended, Buzsaky stung the palms of Coyne in the Boro goal with a fierce drive from 25 yards.

Harford reverted to a 4-4-2 formation after the break, as he worked to get his team back in this game. Simpson joined German in attack, with Buzsaky returning to the right of midfield.

Five minutes into the second half, Buzsaky's long free kick from just inside the Boro half was flicked on by Stewart, but his header was easily gathered by Coyne.

As Stewart returned to his defensive position, he remonstrated with the referee that he was being pulled all over the place in the box, but Woolmer wasn't interested.

Harford then made a double substitution, replacing Hill and German with Gary Borrowdale and Marcus Bent respectively.

The change certainly made a difference, as the R's began to really impose themselves on the hosts, and were camped in the Boro half for large spells, but failed to really threaten Coyne's goal.

Such was the territorial advantage, the home fans started to show their frustrations, despite being two goals to the good.

In the 69th minute, Ramage got down the right before whipping in a great delivery for Bent, but McManus got the slightest of touches to avert the danger before the ball could reach the R's forward.

Seconds later, Simpson was inches away from connecting with a similar delivery by Cook on the other flank.

Harford then made his final substitution of the afternoon, replacing the hard-working Faurlin with the creative Adel Taarabt.

And his impact was almost instant. After Buzsaky had tussled for possession in the middle of the park, the ball fell kindly for the Moroccan, who forced a finger-tip save from Coyne from 20 yards out.

At the other end, Lita nearly made it three for the hosts following a counter-attack, but Ikeme was equal to it, denying him with a fine save to his left.

In the 79th minute, the R's should have halved the deficit through Leigertwood. After a fine ball from the right by Ramage to the far post, Bent coolly nodded the ball into the path of the R's skipper, but his drive hit the post from six yards out with the keeper flat-footed.

Six minutes later, Bent put the ball in the back of the net following Taarabt's delivery from the right, but his effort was immediately ruled out for offside.

Middlesbrough were able to safely see out the closing stages, as the R's were left to rue those crucial penalty decisions in the first half.

Raheem Sterling has joined Liverpool for an undisclosed fee
The QPR youth product has been a regular in the QPR Under 18s this season and has also featured in the Reserves.
- The 15-year-old made his debut for the England U16s in November as a second-half substitute against Northern Ireland, and has gone on to make two further appearances for Kenny Swain's team.

Brian Glanville/World Soccer on Briatore's Departure
- And so, not a moment too soon, addio Briatore. That flamboyant fellow has at last left Queens Park Rangers, where as chairman he constantly meddled in affairs which should have been left to the managers. Of whom no fewer than ten were jettisoned during his autocratic reign.
- In defence of this flamboyant figure, it should be said that his money rescued QPR from administration. The odd thing being that despite the presence of himself, the billionaire FI man Bernie Ecclestone, with the still richer Indian steel magnate Mitttal hovering in the background, QPR’s transfer policy has largely been limited to the loans of lesser players.
- Briatore as we know was cast into outer darkness by Formula 1, for deliberately arranging for his Renault car to crash, only to have the suspension cancelled in court. Formula 1 have promised to appeal in turn, but, so far, nothing has happened. Meanwhile Briatore is being sued for millions by his ex-partner in a couture firm, Angelo Galasso. Never a dull moment.
- Of all those managerial sackings, the silliest was surely that of the former Portugal midfield star, Paulo Sousa, for daring to reveal that Blackstone, his incisive striker, had been sold over his head to Nottingham Forest. Sousa now inspires Swansea." World Soccer

QPR Official Site - GERMAN PENS NEW DEAL
- Antonio German has put pen to paper on a new contract which will keep him at the Club until the summer of 2012.
- The 18-year old striker scored on his full debut against Doncaster at the weekend, and is looking forward to building on his early promise.

"I was out of contract at the end of the season, so I'm just happy to get it all done so that now I can concentrate on my football," German told www.qpr.co.uk.

"It gives me a big lift because it shows that the Club are keen to keep me here, which is good.

"Mick Harford has given me a lot of help. After training he does some shooting and hold-up play with me, and gives me a few tips on how to be a centre forward. He's been really good to me.

"He's helped me on my movement and my positioning - it's been great."

German, who was brought up in Harlesden and joined the R's as a 14-year-old, added: "My target for the rest of the season is to start more games and score a few goals.

"I've got my chance and I've got to take it now. The hard part is not getting into the team, it's staying there and hopefully I can do that."

R's boss Harford was delighted after seeing the young forward commit his future to the Club, and added: "It's great for QPR to tie Antonio down to a long-term contract. He's one for the future.

"Antonio's broken into the First Team and done very well. He looks hungry around the training ground, hungry on the pitch and when he trains, he's got a fantastic attitude.

"He wants to be a footballer and if he keeps his feet on the ground, keeps working hard and keeps doing the right things, then hopefully he'll progress and become a good player.

"When I first came to QPR he wasn't really involved with the First Team. But he asked me if he could train with us and I liked that attitude.

"He's come in and been a breath of fresh air. Hopefully it's the start of a long and successful career for him. The hard work starts here." QPR

Mirror/James Nursey Warnock set for QPR job, with Palace top scorer Darren Ambrose to follow
- QPR caretaker Mick Harford is set to take the team for the final time tomorrow at Middlesbrough.
- Harford yesterday named the Rangers side for their match tomorrow at Championship Boro.
- But the game is certain to be Harford’s last outing at the helm with Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock waiting in the wings.
- Warnock is keen on taking charge at Loftus Road on a lucrative two-and-a-half-year contract.
- And he plans to take Palace’s top scorer Darren Ambrose with him on loan ahead of a permanent summer transfer.
- But Ambrose’s old club Ipswich are also interested in re-signing their former midfielder, who has 17 goals this term. Mirror

South London Press/Richard Cawley QPR begin negotiations for Palace boss Warnock
- NEIL Warnock looks set to take charge of his final game as Crystal Palace boss tomorrow – but will only leave if QPR can agree an adequate compensation package for his services.
The Eagles boss has refused to pledge his long-term future to the South London outfit but he will be in charge for the crucial match at Doncaster Rovers.
- But the South London Press understands that discussions have now started between QPR and Palace’s administrator Brendan Guilfoyle as they try to hammer out an agreement for him to become the new boss at Loftus Road.
- Warnock is determined that the manner of any exit is totally professional – and there is no threat of him walking out on the Eagles if the two clubs cannot thrash out a deal.

Football League - WHAT'S IN A NAME: QUEENS PARK RANGERS
- Name: Queens Park Rangers
Ground: Loftus Road
Nickname: The Hoops / Rangers
Home Kit: Blue/White Hoops

The club we now know as Queens Park Rangers has been in existence since 1882 although back then they were known as St Jude's. They were set up by the old boys of Droop Street Board School who were members of the St Jude's Institute, which was used at the club's headquarters, hence the name.

They became known as Queens Park Rangers when they merged with Christchurch Rangers in 1886, taking the name because most of the players came from the Queens Park area of North London.
- They started off life playing their home matches at Kensal Rise Athletics Ground and wore a shirt of light and dark blue halves but they swapped and changed their home ground more than most people even changed their shirts with spells at Welfords Field, London Scottish Ground, Home Park, Kensal Rise Green, the Gun Club at Wormwood Scrubs, the Kilburn Ground and the Kensal Rise Athletic Ground again all by 1891.
- A year later the club changed their colours to green and white hoops and joined the West London League. They won their first piece of silverware shortly after when they beat Fulham in the final of the West London Observer Cup.
- Rangers went professional on 28th December 1898 to prevent players leaving to join other clubs. They also applied to join the Southern League. Their first match as a professional club came nearly 10 months later, when they played at Tottenham on 9th September 1899, losing 1-0.
- In the early part of the 20th century the club had teams in both the Southern League and the Western league but in 1920 they were elected to the Football League Third Division and the club has remained in the League since, although there were a few close calls.
- At the end of the 1923/24 season they finished bottom of the table with 31 points from 42 matches and had to apply for re-election.
- Two seasons later they finished bottom again with just 21 points, the lowest ever recorded in the Third Division. They successfully applied for re-election and for the start of the 1926/27 season, they changed their colours to blue and white hoops for the first time, colours that have remained since.
- After a nomadic existence which saw QPR play home matches at 14 difference grounds the club finally settled at Loftus Road in 1917 after Shepherd's Bush Football Club, who previously used the ground, disbanded.
- Loftus Road has been their ground for 90 of the last 93 years, after brief spells at the White City Stadium. The first came from 1931 -1933, to accommodate bigger crowds but the club decided against a permanent move and returned to Loftus Road. They spent a second spell from 1962-1963 but again returned to Loftus Road, where they have remained since. Football League

Paul Warburton/Fulham Chronicle - Feb 25 2010
Mick Harford will remain as QPR boss, says Amit Bhatia

- THE Mittal family last night vetoed any move for a new manager at QPR and insisted Mick Harford remain until the end of the season.
- Despite noises from fans for either Neil Warnock or previous boss Iain Dowie loud enough to put the Hoops drummer to shame – the new regime wants to wait until the end of this campaign before deciding whether to extend Harford’s contract or look somewhere else.
- It’s understood there has been contact with both Dowie and Warnock – but the clue to a decision that preserves the status quo was in the statement made by vice-chair Amit Bhatia on Wednesday.
- The son-in-law of billionaire shareholder Lakshmi Mittal made it plain a fifth new manager in just under two months was out of the question.
- Bhatia said: "Our vision as a family is to reintroduce stability into the football club. It's of great importance. An organisation cannot succeed if there's no stability at the top."
- It did Harford’s case no harm when Rangers gained their first win in 10 attempts against Doncaster on Saturday – and complications over Warnock’s expected salary and compensation to Crystal Palace muddied the waters further over a potential switch." Fulham Chronicle

FourFourTwo - Exclusive: QPR set to snare Warnock
- Neil Warnock will leave Crystal Palace this week, having agreed terms to take over at QPR.
- Palace's chief administrator Brendan Guilfoyle is currently trying to thrash out a compensation deal with officials at Loftus Road.
- A source associated with the Palace administration told FourFourTwo: “Warnock will definitely leave. In effect he'll still be here as compensation is not yet agreed with QPR, but he has already agreed personal terms with QPR and has told the administrator that he'll resign later in week if compensation can't be agreed.”
- As FourFourTwo reported earlier in the week, Warnock wants one more crack at Premier League football and stands a better chance of achieving his ambition with QPR's financial backing than at poverty-stricken Palace.
- The move is another a huge blow to Palace, who also lost Victor Moses to Wigan in the transfer window...." FourFourTwo

WARNOCK POST ASTON-VILLA GAME COMMENTS
Warnock coy over Palace future
Published: Wednesday, 24 February 2010, 11:33PM
Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock again made little comment about his future after the 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Aston Villa amid speculation he is bound for QPR.
Warnock did confirm that he will be in charge of Palace for Saturday's game at Doncaster but the former Sheffield United boss was giving very little away.
He said: "This could have been my last game - but it won't be and we'll now get ready for Doncaster.
"Can I deny speculation about going to QPR? No." ITV

Sky - Warnock denies last-game talk
Eagles boss frustrated with decision in Villa cup tie
Last updated: 24th February 2010

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock insists the FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa will not be his last game in charge.

The financially-stricken Eagles went down 3-1 at Villa Park, although they put in a spirited display and equalised in the second half thanks to a Darren Ambrose penalty.

With Warnock continually linked with a move to Queens Park Rangers, it had been rumoured that the fifth-round replay would be his last as Palace boss.

However, while not denying the Rangers link, he says he will still be at the helm for the Doncaster clash at the weekend.
- "This could have been my last game, but it won't be and we'll now get ready for Doncaster," he said.
- "Can I deny speculation about going to QPR? No."...."

BBC/Steve Claridge re Neil Warnock, Crystal Palace and QPR
- Ask Steve Claridge
Crystal Palace have slipped into the Championship relegation zone since going into administration and being docked 10 points at the end of January and their manager Neil Warnock is being heavily linked with a move to QPR. This week I examine the Eagles' prospects, as well as those of Warnock should he decide to leave Selhurst Park to take the reins at Loftus Road....

- Do you think Crystal Palace can hold on to manager Neil Warnock and can they stay in the Championship?
Steve Bidwell, England

There is lots of speculation at the moment that Warnock will be taking charge at QPR next week, which is ironic considering he could have been sacked by Palace earlier on in the season because he had an absolute nightmare start. The reason he kept his job was that he has a very good relationship with Simon Jordan, Palace's former owner, but that tie is no longer there.

I understand the appeal of changing jobs. Palace are in a precarious state after going into administration while, at QPR, they finally look like they are getting back to some sort of sanity.

So I can see Warnock going to QPR but I think it will only be under his own terms. I don't know how long he is planning to stay in the game so it might be his last hurrah if they were to give him some dough and let him make a real go of it.

If Warnock does go to Loftus Road, and it looks like he will, then Palace are in trouble. Whoever replaces him will face a difficult job to keep them up and, in the longer term, a lot will depend on where they are when they come out of administration and who owns them.
Warnock is being linked with the manager's job at QPR
But the biggest problem Palace have is their ground. They need to agree a decent lease or acquire Selhurst Park themselves because, if the situation continues where they are told how much they have to pay for the rent of their ground, then it will hold them back forever. Whoever takes over the club will have to resolve that as quickly as possible. BBC

Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - There's hope for Rangers at last
24 February 2010
- FINALLY, Flavio Briatore gave QPR fans their best news in two and a half years - his statement of resignation.

Briatore probably didn't realise it, but he was spot on last Friday when he boasted that he felt 'proud to have helped save this historical club'.

His decision to relinquish the reins of power may well have resuscitated a club that he distorted into a 'project' and a 'brand', estranged from its loyal fanbase, and turned into a by-word for farce and ineptitude.

Ultimately, Briatore's chairmanship will go down in Rangers' history as a wasted opportunity - a period of false hope, atrocious PR and style over substance.

But that is now in the past. The future is in the hands of new majority shareholder Lakshmi Mittal, his son-in-law Amit Bhatia and chairman Ishan Saksena.

Bhatia, in particular, has given fans good reason to believe he shares their passion for Rangers - and, most importantly, will take their concerns into account.

It was Bhatia who took note of the supporters' anger last season, when Briatore planned to charge them a staggering £50 a time, and publicly shelved the proposal.

That is the key to this new regime at Loftus Road: will they learn from the mistakes of the old one?

Will they reopen regular channels of communication with the fans? Will they recruit people who understand football instead of trying to run that side of the business on the cheap?

Will they rebuild the coaching, scouting and administrative structures that were neglected under Briatore instead of expecting a 'sporting director' to deal with anything and everything?

Will they allow the team manager to do his job without interference and knit together a successful squad over the course of a few years, if that's what it takes?

Will they inject funds into the youth set-up - the lifeblood of the club - instead of squandering huge amounts of money on a never-ending stream of average journeymen and short-term loans?

And, most importantly, will they be ready to take advice and be open to alternative ideas instead of stubbornly relying on spin and propaganda to counter dissenting voices?

The recent history of QPR proves that, when everyone connected with the club - players, coaches, directors, supporters and yes, even the local media - pull together, they can achieve something special.

It's not too late to recapture that - but, for the moment, the first objective must be to get behind the new board, the manager and the team and help them win the fight against relegation.

Maybe it's premature to sing 'we've got our Rangers back' already. But, at last, QPR fans can feel cautiously optimistic that they will. Kilburn Times

Standard/Sami Mokbel - QPR will turn to Iain Dowie if bid for Neil Warnock fails
- Iain Dowie is on standby to make a remarkable return to Queens Park Rangers if there are any last-minute hitches in the club's pursuit of Neil Warnock.

Crystal Palace boss Warnock is understood to have been offered the job and is likely to move after his club's Championship fixture at Doncaster on Saturday, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal worth £625,000 a year.

But if Rangers decide that the £1million compensation required to land Warnock is too steep, they are likely to turn to former boss Dowie.

The 45-year-old took charge of Rangers in May 2008 but was sacked by former owner Flavio Briatore just five months later after frequent disputes about team selection issues.

It is believed Dowie is still being paid off by Rangers, meaning that bringing him back would cost them very little.

Should the move for Warnock collapse, Dowie would be offered a deal until the end of the season, with a bonus for keeping QPR in the Championship.

Whoever takes over at Rangers, the move is bad news for current caretaker boss Mick Harford.

The former Luton manager met with new QPR chairman Ishan Saksena yesterday afternoon but is now resigned to the fact that the clash at Middlesbrough on Saturday will be his last.

Harford was initially given the role until the end of the season after Paul Hart left QPR following a five-game spell in charge, but he has overseen a miserable run.

The 51-year-old said at the weekend he would consider being part of Warnock's coaching staff - but the Palace boss will bring in his own coaches should he get the job. Standard

Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - Bardsley wants to be new QPR boss
FORMER QPR star David Bardsley has told the Times he wants to return to Loftus Road as manager.

Bardsley has been happily settled with his family in Florida for the last six years, working as director of the Orlando FC youth academy - but says he would give it all up for the chance to manage his old club.

"This is a great place to live and work and only the QPR job could bring me back to England," admitted the 45-year-old. "If I got a chance to go back there, I'd be on my knees tomorrow.

"My wife and three children wouldn't be able to come with me because of their commitments in America, but I would seriously love to talk to QPR about working there.

"I have a huge tie to the club and the fans and I want to see QPR back where they belong. I've kept my eye on what's been going on there for a number of years and it's something I have a real passion for.

"When I played at QPR there were no big time Charlies, no messing around. How the manager wanted it was how it had to be and that went back to Don Howe's time, then Gerry Francis.

"You've got to have a nucleus of players who know what playing for that club is all about - and that's what has been missing for years. It kills me to see it, but I believe it's still possible to get back to those days."

Bardsley was the regular right-back in the Rangers side that consistently finished in the top half of the Premier League and made more than 250 appearances during nine years at Loftus Road.

He returned to his first club, Blackpool, to finish his playing career and, when the management opening that had been mooted did not materialise there, began working for the Ajax Academy programme in the USA.

Once that ended, the former England international established Orlando FC with the objective of helping both American and overseas youngsters progress to college and club level.

The club have been officially linked to QPR's youth set-up for the past four years and play in official Rangers colours at prestigious tournaments such as the Dallas Cup, run by ex-Rs boss Gordon Jago.

And Bardsley, who holds an extraordinary ability visa for football = an extremely rare accolade in the USA - refutes any suggestion that the content of his coaching CV might be insufficient to make him a genuine candidate as QPR boss.

"Some of the managers they've had recently at QPR had never worked in England before - and what about Roberto Mancini at Manchester City?" he added.

"It isn't about experience - a lot of people come in and get top level jobs and get the sack after six months. I've seen players and managers getting on and off the bandwagon and they've got no ties to any special club. "There's a misconception about what's required in the States. I've coached at a high standard for several years and, believe me, the passion, tempo and training that goes on here is at a different level. Kilburn Times

Ben Kosky/KILBURN TIMES - German ready to battle for QPR place

HARLESDEN teenager Antonio German accepts he has a fight on his hands to stay in the team - despite scoring on his full QPR debut.

With on-loan pair Marcus Bent and Tamas Priskin nursing injuries, the 18-year-old striker was handed his first start on Saturday and responded by netting the opening goal in Rangers' 2-1 win over Doncaster.

But German, who represented Brent Schools for two years while working his way through the Rs' youth set-up, admitted: "Getting in the team is not the hardest thing - it's staying in it.

"I'm just hoping I can do that and score a few more goals. The step up is a lot different from reserve football and I felt it towards the end on Saturday, but I put down a marker and I'm happy with that.

"I'm thankful for the opportunity from Mick [Harford], really. I've been working hard in training and he gave me a go - hopefully he's seen that I've taken the chance.

"My contract ends at the end of the season and hopefully I can get a new one. I like it at QPR - the training's good and the people are good too."

German, who attended St Gregory's Science College, Kenton, also played Harrow Youth League football for the Stonebridge-based St Andrew's Youth side.

After becoming a regular in Rangers' under-18 and reserve sides, the striker made his first senior appearance as a substitute at Southampton just under a year ago.

He also spent a month on loan with Aldershot Town earlier this season, but is full of praise for QPR youth team coaches Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham for the role they have played in his development.

"I have to give them a lot of credit," German added. "They've helped me on my movement, position and touch and sometimes they stay out with me after training to work on my finishing.

"There are quite a few good young players coming through - Angelo Balanta, Romone Rose and Josh Parker - and it's nice to be given a chance. Kilburn Times
