Daily Mail - Mark Hughes Column

We have signed a few players. It might look like a scattergun approach but it’s not.

We start every summer with a wishlist, but don’t usually get everyone! We’ve done our homework, we are not just collecting players. We’ve signed some very good ones from big clubs like Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

The one player we didn’t expect was Julio Cesar. He’s a fantastic signing for this club. It has been called a statement signing, but I don’t like that. It’s a football signing. He wants to be part of the story of where this club is heading.

We have not spent a fortune, we have built up good contacts in the game.

We have negotiated some good deals that will not damage the club. I also have an ambitious chairman, Tony Fernandes, who is the best I have worked for.

Julio Cesar sat in Tony’s house and liked what we had to say. He showed a desire to play in the Premier League and to listen to what we are trying to achieve. He is some goalkeeper. I played with some good keepers, including Peter Schmeichel.

I worked with some good ones too, such as Brad Friedel, Shay Given and Joe Hart. Julio is a fantastic shot-stopper who has a control of his area.

He’s won 64 caps for Brazil. That tells you it all. And he’s only 32. Brad is still playing in the Premier League at 41.

It was always my plan to sign two goalkeepers. I just didn’t expect one of them to be a Champions League winner from Inter Milan.

We’ve had different keepers in all summer, taking a look at them. Rob Green now has to rise to the challenge. Competition for places is what I wanted.

The squad required major surgery, that has now happened and I expect us to have a good season.

I back my record in the transfer market.

Vincent Kompany is the captain of the English champions, Mousa Dembele I signed for Fulham for £4million and they sold him this week to Tottenham for £15m. Chris Samba cost Blackburn £450,000 and was sold for over £12m. They don’t all work as well as those, mind, but they’re not bad.

Keeping the transfer window open after the start of the season is not helpful to managers.

But it has been helpful to us this time. We have a lot of quality now. I’m looking forward to watching training. I don’t play any more.

I would just get in the way and we want the training to have the required intensity. The new players will enjoy the sessions my staff and I put on.

Losing 5-0 to Swansea was not in the plan.

It took us by surprise, we didn’t see it coming. We had a good pre-season; a lot of travelling, but a good pre-season and we were happy with preparation. Then along came Swansea.

They scored a terrific second goal as we chased the game and then they picked us off. The result sounds awful. Actually, it was awful. But the signings this week are not a knee-jerk response to that defeat, even though it might look that way.

These players were always on our wishlist and the chairman has been brilliant. Now we have to see where we can take this club.
We won’t go through this process again. It won’t be spend, spend, spend all the time.

But I can’t say we are finished yet. There is still until 11pm today. I said in an earlier column for Sportsmail that I wanted to improve on the squad and bring in quality. We have done that.

I’m looking forward to seeing this team settle down and play. We have some interesting games coming up...Manchester City, Chelsea, Spurs. Top players thrive on big challenges. Let’s see what we can do.

I congratulate City on winning the title last season.

They beat us on the final day — you may remember. It was crazy when they won right at the death. It would be good to think we owe them one. They have an outstanding team, but let’s have a go.

Attacking football has been rewarded already this season, although we can’t be gung-ho. I signed a little fella called Carlos Tevez for City, but I won’t be asking him to go easy on us. He looks a threat again and has a sparkle in his eye. He looks settled, but we have goalscorers too.

There are similarities between what we found at QPR and when I took over at City.

Things just weren’t in place. There wasn’t the infrastructure to fulfil the demands of the owner. And that takes time. The owner understands what we want to build and what it will take to get there.

I want QPR to be in a different place — so what’s my target for the team?

We were almost relegated last season. It may take two, three, four years but we want to build something here. The ground can be a hostile fortress for us and we have a good record at Loftus Road, where the supporters create a terrific atmosphere that helped us to some big wins last season.

Swansea was a blip. Since then we got a point on the road at Norwich and we have beaten Walsall at home in the Capital One Cup. It’s a start.

One of the players who has left the club is Paddy Kenny.

You would have read in these pages about his texts and voicemails. It was an unfortunate episode between professional people. It shouldn’t have happened, but he has apologised and it’s over now.

We move on. We needed different personnel and we now have Robert Green and Julio Cesar. I wish Paddy all the best at Leeds.

Another who is close to leaving is Joey Barton.

A number of options have been presented to him and I hope this latest one works out for him at Marseille. It’s better for him to move on and get on with his football career. I don’t really have anything more to say on the matter.

I’m not on Twitter. And I won’t be.

I just don’t get it. But then I guess not everyone has a newspaper column. I will report back in a few weeks.

Hopefully I will have some Premier League wins to include. This column should have appeared after the Swansea game, but I thought it was going to be an interesting final week of the transfer window.

And that’s how it’s turned out. It’s good to have exciting signings to write about. Esteban Granero is another terrific capture, which takes it to 10.

Park Ji-sung, Jose Bosingwa, Junior Hoilett, Samba Diakite, Fabio, Ryan Nelsen, Andy Johnson, Rob Green and Julio Cesar. That looks like good business to me. Mail

Ham and High - QPR boss provides reason why Man Utd, Inter Milan & Real Madrid stars have joined

QPR manager Mark Hughes believes that the club’s project is the reason why he is able to complete a number of transfer coups.

The R’s summer signings have included Ryan Nelsen, Andy Johnson, Robert Green, Samba Diakite and Junior Hoilett.

However the west Londoners have also completed deals for Ji-Sung Park, Jose Bosingwa and the club have also brought in Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar, subject to international clearance, and Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero in the past two days.

“What we are doing at QPR is having an impact on players,” Hughes said.

“It is probably true to say that if we had approached certain players three or four months ago about joining the club, the suggestion wouldn’t have been entertained.

“But people now know we are serious and we are trying to do something different here.

“And that message is out there now which is why we are able to sit in front of quality players and, once we are given that opportunity, we feel we have a good story to tell them.

“That’s why players are deciding that QPR is a great option.” Ham and High

QPR Official Site - EXCLUSIVE: GRANERO COMPLETES MOVE

R’s seal sensational deal for Real Madrid midfielder

I love the passion of the English fans and from what I know QPR supporters are amongst the very best. "
Esteban Granero
THE CLUB is delighted to confirm the signing of Real Madrid ace Esteban Granero.

The talented midfielder – who has made 60 appearances for Los Blancos – has penned a four-year contract at Loftus Road, after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for his services.

A darling of the Santiago Bernabeu terraces having come through the Madrid Academy set-up, the 25 year-old midfielder arrives in W12 just three months after helping Madrid win the La Liga title, his third major trophy.

R’s boss Mark Hughes believes Rangers will benefit hugely from having a player of Granero’s ilk at the club, commenting: “He is a great player, first and foremost. You don’t play at a club like Real Madrid if you’re not.

“He has been there from the age of nine, so this has been a huge decision for him. He is very well regarded there and for him to leave a club of that stature to come to us shows the belief he has in what we are trying to do.

“He has got great energy and is technically very gifted, as you would expect from a Real Madrid player. He is very comfortable on the ball and is an all-round excellent midfielder, which we will benefit from.”

Hughes added: “What we are doing at QPR is having an impact on players. It is probably true to say that if we had approached certain players three or four months ago about joining the club, the suggestion wouldn’t have been entertained.

“But people now know we are serious and we are trying to do something different here. And that message is out there now which is why we are able to sit in front of quality players and once we are given that opportunity, we feel we have a good story to tell them. That’s why players are deciding that QPR is a great option.”

Granero, who will wear the number 14 shirt at Loftus Road, told www.qpr.co.uk: “I’m very happy to be here.

“I love the passion of the English fans and from what I know QPR supporters are amongst the very best.

“I think QPR will continue to grow as a club and I want to be part of a very bright future here.

“When I spoke to Mark and Mike (Rigg), as well as Tony (Fernandes) I was convinced that I wanted to be part of this project, which has no limits.

“I am delighted to be part of this exciting chapter in the club’s history. Players that have joined before me are as excited as I am about what QPR can become, one of the great teams in England.”  QPR

QPR Official Site on Granero

We take a look at Mark Hughes’s latest summer signing …
THE ARRIVAL of Esteban Félix Granero Molina from Real Madrid represents yet another significant coup for R's boss Mark Hughes.

The 25 year-old midfielder, who joined Madrid as an eight year-old, arrives at Loftus Road just months after helping Real win the La Liga title.

After coming through the ranks at the Santiago Bernabéu, Granero made the step up to Madrid's C squad at the age of 17, standing out for his talent and passing skills, and going on to receive the Números 1 Don Balón award as the 'Most Valuable Player' of the fourth division Group 7 in 2005/06.

Granero – who is also known as El Pirata (the pirate) in Spain owing to his outlandish hairstyle– spent the 2008/09 campaign on loan at Getafe - also based in Madrid - making 27 appearances and scoring three goals.

At the end of the season, which included a run to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, Granero returned to Madrid.

However, Getafe came back in for the midfielder in July 2008, with Granero penning a permanent deal. Under the terms of the deal, Madrid agreed a re-buy option, which after making 35 appearances and scoring five goals in the 2008/09 season, was exercised in July 2009 in a deal reported to be worth four million euros.

Granero's first Madrid goal at senior level arrived in the opening game of the 2009/10 season away at Espanyol, and he went on to make 31 appearances in La Liga.

The arrivals of Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil in 2010 restricted his starts the following season, but Granero was still a valuable squad player, scoring a crucial goal from the bench in a 1-1 draw versus Almería, as well as playing his part in their Copa del Rey triumph over Barcelona.

Last season, Granero played a vital role in the Madrid squad that clinched the La Liga title. He made 17 La Liga appearances, as Jose Mourinho's side saw off the threat of Barcelona to win their first league crown in four years.

MAIL - QPR snap up Pompey youngster Magri as Granero and Mbia also head to Loftus Road

Queens Park Rangers' recruitment drive continued apace on Thursday as they added Portsmouth's teenage defender Sam Magri to deals for Esteban Granero and Stephane Mbia.
Rangers are continuing to work on further deals with a centre-back still on their wanted list. Manager Mark Hughes has targeted moves for Porto's Rolando, Tottenham's Michael Dawson and Real Madrid's Ricardo Carvalho, but has seen bids for the three stall and talks over a move for Wolfsburg's Danish international Simon Kjaer, 23, have also ground to a halt.

On his way: Mbia is set to move to Loftus Road
England youth international Magri, 18, who has signed a two year deal, had a trial at Liverpool last year.

QPR Official Site - R’S SIGN POMPEY YOUNGSTER
Centre-half pens two-year professional deal

I just want to keep learning and progressing as a player. The new under-21 league is a great platform for young players."
Sam Magri
QPR HAVE completed the signing of highly-rated England youth international Sam Magri.

The cultured centre-half has signed a two-year professional contract following his release from Portsmouth.

Magri, who spurned the advances down a couple of other Premier League clubs in favour of a move to Loftus Road, told www.qpr.co.uk: “I’m really excited to be here.

“QPR are really going places as a club and I’m looking forward to writing the next chapter of my career here.

“I just want to keep learning and progressing as a player. The new under-21 league is a great platform for young players like myself and I can’t wait to meet my new team-mates and start playing.”

R's Head Coach of Elite Development, Marc Bircham, told www.qpr.co.uk: "I have seen Sam play quite a few times and he is a player of potential. He is an excellent addition for us.

"His arrival is an example of what we are trying to do as a football club. The first team are working hard to raise the standard of their squad and we are doing the same at Academy level.

"Sam enjoys the art of defending but he is also comfortable on the ball and I think every modern day centre back needs to have that now.

"There were a number of clubs in England interested in Sam so the fact he has come here shows how QPR is looked upon now by players at other teams.

"We have got some really big aspirations here and we are working hard to fulfil them."

Magri, 18, joined Pompey as a youth player and moved up through the ranks in their Academy.

During the 2011/12 season, he was involved in several first team squads, but was forced to wait for his first professional appearance until earlier this season, in a Capital One Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle.

On the international stage, Magri captained the England under-16 side during the successful Victory Shield campaign of 2009 and also travelled to France in March 2010 to help England reach the Final of the Montaigu Tournament, where they lost to Portugal on penalties.

Since then, he has accrued 22 England under-17 caps, featuring in the 2011 World Cup in Mexico.

He made his debut for the under-18’s versus Slovakia in November and is currently on standby for the next England under-19 fixture. QPR

Guardian - Jacob Steinberg - Sam Allardyce offers support to QPR goalkeeper Robert Green

• Green's QPR place threatened by Júlio César arrival
• Allardyce believes Brazilian may struggle in England

Sam Allardyce has offered his support to Robert Green, who left West Ham United for Queens Park Rangers in the summer but whose place is now threatened by the arrival of the Internazionale goalkeeper Júlio César at Loftus Road.

César, who won the Champions League with Inter two years ago, has undoubted pedigree but Allardyce believes the Brazilian will take time to settle in English football and backed Green to rise to the challenge.

"He's a very experienced goalkeeper, an England international, so I don't think he'll worry too much about the competition from César," said Allardyce. "He [César] won't be ready for the Premier League. They'll probably play him because of the size of the name but he won't have seen anything like the Premier League when it comes in and at him.

"I know he's been at a top club for many, many years but this league is different to what he's used to playing in and that takes some adjusting to. Rob's proven he's one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League over the last nine or 10 years."

Allardyce admitted his disappointment at not being able to convince Green to sign a new contract and stay at West Ham but still wishes him well. Green has endured a difficult start to life at QPR, a poor performance on his debut against Swansea City convincing Mark Hughes to move for César.

"There are decisions made by players and managers when we think it is a better time for us to move on," said Allardyce. "And then when we finally get there it's not quite as good as we thought it was. In the end from Robert's point of view he's at a very good club that must have given him a very good contract.

"He's at the prime time of his career. For a goalkeeper just into his 30s that is the most golden moment, I suppose, or should be because you know all about the goalkeeping, you know all about the pressure, you know all about the demands and the level of football and consistency you've got to hit. It's all there, locked into the brain ready to use.

"He's at his peak. His fitness levels are brilliant, he works hard on the training ground. He tries to get better all the time and not rest on his laurels." Guardian

QPR Official Site - DIAKITE RULED OUT
Midfielder set to miss City clash

R'S MIDFIELDER Samba Diakite will miss Saturday's trip to the Etihad Stadium.

The 23 year-old Malian international has returned to France owing to personal reasons and won't feature against the champions.

Rangers boss Mark Hughes told www.qpr.co.uk: "Samba is unfortunately having difficulties with some personal issues at the moment and we are supporting him in every way we can.

"We hope he can overcome this very quickly and get back to being the outstanding player that he undoubtedly is. In the meantime, we are giving him the time and help that he needs."

The club will be making no further comment, as we respect the player's privacy at this time. QPR

MIRROR  - French connection: Barton move to Marseille back on as QPR agree to supplement his wages

Rangers are desperate to get rid of the troublesome midfielder on a season long loan with Stephen M’Bia moving in the opposite direction

Swaping “training with fellow Taliban members” for the crazy city which staged the French Connection could only happen to Joey Barton.

Who needs what and who could they get? Club-by-club guide to the last week of the transfer window

Especially after announcing it won’t happen on Twitter.

And if Olympique Marseille qualify for the Europa League tomorrow, the Enfant Terrible of English football will be playing European matches at a packed Stade Velodrome next month long before his domestic ban expires. It is certainly better than Fleetwood.

Yesterday started with Barton announcing to his 1.69million Twitter followers he was “heartbroken” that his loan move to Marseille was not going to happen.

But QPR are so keen to rid themselves of their former captain they are ready to continue to pay the bulk of his wages to end his internal exile at Loftus Road.

Hail Cesar: rangers want to bring in Inter Milan's Brazilian keeper

Barton’s agent Willie McKay said last night the player is ready to fly to Marseille with Stephen M’Bia heading in the opposite direction.

And sources close to Barton insist the year-long loan deal will finally go through in the next 48 hours although the French transfer window is open until September 4.

Meanwhile, QPR were finalising their ninth signing of the summer last night with Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar at Loftus Road.

The Inter Milan star, 32, is the latest thirtysomething player to be brought in on big wages with little re-sale value. And this at a club where agents claim they are unclear over who is really doing the transfer business.  Mirror

Sporting Life - Barton leaving; Cesar joining?

Mark Hughes says Joey Barton's proposed move to Marseille could be back on and that QPR are close to signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

The former captain, who is in the midst of a 12-game ban, revealed earlier on Tuesday that a move to Marseille looked to be off.

However, following QPR's Capital One Cup victory over Walsall, Hughes said: "The Marseille ordeal may not be dead in the water.

"We might be able to get a solution for everybody. This option has attracted Joey's enthusiasm so hopefully it is concluded."

Meanwhile he is shocked the west Londoners are pulling off a move for Cesar.

The Brazil international was a key part of the Italian side's Champions League win two years ago but now looks set to leave the San Siro for W12.

Cesar was at Loftus Road on Tuesday to discuss terms ahead of the win over Walsall and looks set to pen a deal with the Hoops.

"There's nothing concluded yet," Hughes said. "There are a number of papers that need to go back.

"We're not at a point where we can actually say it's a done deal.

The intention is there obviously if we can but at the moment it's not concluded.

"I said I wanted to have two quality keepers this window if at all possible. Sometimes when opportunities present itself you want to pursue them.

"When you get an opportunity to possibly bring a player of the quality Julio Cesar's quality, with his playing record and his mentality, then I think you have to pursue to its conclusion.

"I think when we started the process we probably never thought there was an opportunity or chance he would be able to come here. If we are able to conclude it, we'll be delighted."

The move for Cesar has surprised some given QPR signed West Ham and England goalkeeper Rob Green earlier in the summer.

The 32-year-old penned a two-year deal with the Hoops but looks set to lose his number one spot after just three games.

Green kept his first clean sheet for the club against Walsall this evening and Hughes admits he did not manage to speak to him about the prospective Cesar acquisition before the game.

"I haven't had a chance to really talk to him about it," he said.

"Obviously I was concerned with the preparation for the game, but certainly I will sit down with Rob and go thought it.

"It is a challenge for everybody. What we're trying to do here is improve the quality of the group and that includes the goalkeeping position as well."

Hughes is also in the hunt for central defenders, with Real Madrid's Ricardo Carvalho and Tottenham club captain Michael Dawson amongst those targeted.

"That was the plan at the beginning of the window," he said.

"Probably of all the players we have gone after, that is the one position where we haven't really been able to address.

"We're looking at options right upto the window closing. Whether or not we'll be able to do it, I am not sure.

"Certainly it is an area we are certainly looking to bring one more in." Sporting Life

QPR vs Walsall

QPR Official Site - PROGRESSION PLEASES GAFFER

Hughes reflects on Saddlers win

MARK Hughes felt his team selection in tonight’s (Tuesday) 3-0 victory over Walsall was proof enough of his intent to do well in the Capital One Cup.

Goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips, Bobby Zamora and Jose Bosingwa booked the R’s place in the third round of the competition.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Hughes said: “I was pleased with how we approached tonight.

“There’s always a danger that you can underestimate the opposition. We were the home side and we were playing lower league opposition.

“But I never felt at any point that we didn’t give Walsall the respect that they deserved.

“I thought Walsall played some good stuff – albeit most of the time in front of us. They didn’t create too many problems.

“I thought we were totally in control of the game and, in the end, it was pretty straightforward.”

He added: “You have to earn the right to play and we certainly did that.

“We want to progress in the competition. When people look at the side I put out tonight, that illustrates the point.

“We’ll try and go as far as we can. I think it’s always important to try and progress in every competition that you’re involved in, because there’s not that many on offer.

“If we can do well this year, I think that will supplement our league form. One bounces off the other.” QPR

Boss on Capital One Cup clash at QPR...

SADDLERS' boss, Dean Smith's post-match Press Conference was delayed by a small fire in the Loftus Road Club Shop.

"We came here and tried to play the right way," he said once the three fire engines had departed. "We played some good football at times, but in the end were disappointed by the final scoreline.

"Their second goal was a great finish but I felt that we were always in the game. I was really pleased with our attitude and, to be fair, we created some decent chances.

"Against that calibre of player, you aren't going to create too many chances but Jamie Paterson, Will Grigg and George Bowerman all went close. Had one of those opportunities gone in, it could have been a different game.

"The lads were pleased when they saw the strength of their line-up as it was an opportunity to pit our wits against top-flight opponents, which won't do us any harm.

"We earned the right to come here and, as I say, to way that we tried to win the game and do the right things was very pleasing. We must now take this into our next game."

Adam Chambers was forced to leave the field with a hamstring injury which will be assessed on Wednesday. Walsall

Rangers book their place in round three of the Capital One Cup
GOALS from Shaun Wright-Phillips, Bobby Zamora and Jose Bosingwa saw QPR book their place in the third round of the Capital One Cup thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win over Walsall at Loftus Road.

Rangers were always in control against their League One counterparts and were ahead in the 29th minute when Wright-Phillips finished after combining with Zamora.

Zamora then turned provider to scorer in the 66th minute, latching on to recent long-term injury victim Kieron Dyer’s pass before lobbing David Grof.

Bosingwa made sure of the victory with a close-range finish six minutes from time.

Ale Faurlin was handed his first competitive start in almost eight months for the visit the Saddlers.

There was also a competitive debut for summer signing Ryan Nelsen, as Rangers boss Mark Hughes made five changes in total from Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Norwich City.

Dyer was named among the R’s substitutes.

Rob Green was in goal for QPR, who lined up in a 4-4-2 formation.

Bosingwa, Anton Ferdinand, Nelsen and Fabio da Silva made up the back four.

Faurlin was joined by captain Ji-Sung Park in the centre of midfield, with Wright-Phillips and Junior Hoilett operating from wide.

Andy Johnson partnered former Fulham team-mate Zamora in attack.

There was very little to choose between the two sides in the opening stanza.

The first chance of the evening fell the way of Rangers on ten minutes.

R’s loanee Fabio broke away down the left before squaring the ball back to the waiting Wright-Phillips on ten yards, who fired an effort with his weaker left foot wide.

Two minutes later, Zamora won possession just past the halfway line and put Johnson through on goal, who saw his effort from an acute angle tipped away by Saddlers keeper David Grof.

Rangers again went close from the resultant corner, with Wright-Phillips’s centre powered wide by the head of debutant Nelsen.

A largely tepid spectacle up to this point, the Saddlers were unlucky not to edge in front on 19 minutes. Will Grigg’s glancing header from an Ashley Hemmings free-kick forced a smart save from Green.

Six minutes later, the R’s missed their best chance of the half to date.

The home side eventually worked the ball out to Bosingwa down the right, whose cross was headed agonisingly wide of the upright by Johnson.

Moments later and the R’s were again on the attack, with Hoilett, Zamora and Park all combining before the latter saw a thumping shot deflected wide.

The Hoops took the lead on 29 minutes thanks to an excellent piece of link-up play.

Wright-Phillips started and finished the move, playing the ball into Zamora on the edge of the box who in turn put the diminutive winger through on goal with a precise slide-rule pass.

The finish was equally as impressive, as Wright-Phillips got to the ball ahead of the keeper to poke home the opener.

Six minutes before half-time, Jamie Paterson flashed an effort wide from an acute angle after a defensive slip. Ferdinand also powered a header straight at Grof seconds later after meeting a Wright-Phillips free-kick.

Rangers started the second period brightly but it was the visitors who fashioned the first attempt of the half. Florent Cuvelier’s 25-yard blast was tipped around the post by Green.

Walsall should have levelled from the resultant set-piece when Dean Holden rose to smash a header against the bar. A goalmouth scramble followed, before the R’s eventually managed to avert the danger.

Dyer made his long-awaited comeback from injury on the hour mark, introduced at the expense of Hoilett.

It was a moment of magic from the ex-England international that proved key in Rangers adding a second goal six minutes later.

Dyer received Fabio’s pass before shifting his way past one man and sliding Zamora through on goal.

And Zamora’s subsequent effort was just as classy, with the R’s front-man dinking the ball over the advancing Grof with an expert lob.

QPR rubberstamped the win in the 84th minute.

A corner was cleared only as far as Faurlin just outside the box and, when his deflected shot was blocked by the keeper, Bosingwa followed up to fire home a Rangers third.

QPR: Green, Ferdinand, Park, Johnson, Wright-Phillips (Traore 68), Nelsen, Bosingwa, Fabio, Hoilett (Dyer 60), Zamora (Cisse 69), Faurlin.

Subs: Murphy, Derry, Mackie, Onuoha.

Goals: Wright-Phillips (29), Zamora (66), Bosingwa (84)

Subs: Walker, Williams, Benning, Downing.

Goal.com - Barton: I want to leave QPR for Marseille

QPR midfielder Joey Barton is hoping to leave the Premier League for French side Marseille this week, stating 'enough is enough' and that his heart is 'already in the Velodrome'.

Barton is still serving a suspension following his antics on the final day of the 2011-12 season when he was sent off against Manchester City - with 10 games of 12 still to go before he can play in England. And while he says there are other clubs interested in taking him, Marseille is the only one that interests him, stating he is hoping to seal a move there this week.

"Marseille won again as well. Allez les Marseillais. Maybe I'll see you all this week?" Barton stated on Twitter. "I am hopeful that things will be sorted out soon. Other clubs are in but I only want to play in Marseille. This is the place for me.

"Hopefully, QPR and Marseille can finalize the deal in the next few days. My heart is already in the Vélodrome."

Barton continued to tweet on the subject, stating that Mark Hughes doesn't see a future for the midfielder at the club and though he respects his manager's point of view, 'enough is enough' for his time at the club.

He added: "Not going to cry about it. Maybe it's just time to move on. I enjoyed parts of last season and I believe I am more than capable of playing this year. But the manager doesn't. Such is life.

"I have no problem with this as it's my fault I am banned for 12 (10 now) games. When a person [makes] a decision he has to stand by that. I respect Hughes for this. I don't agree but I accept his decision.

"I am not the type of player to sit on the sidelines and take the cash. It's not me. I could do that for the next three years but it's not me. I want to play football.

"Hopefully the QPR fans will accept that. I offered to resign from the club/contract when I got my ban. @tonyfernandes [and] @Amit_Bhatia99 will testify that I am telling the truth.

"I accepted my punishment from the FA and the club for my behavior against Man City like a man.

"I could of appealed as is my right. I choose not to out of respect. But when I returned to the club. I am forced to train away from the first team. I am stripped of the captaincy. Then, made to train at 3pm. Then, I am hawked around on loan.

"Then, I have my shirt number taken without any notice. Then, I read I wouldn't of been signed had the current regime been in place.

"I accepted all this. I never once spoke out of turn or angrily to anybody. I am a man. I can only take so much. I want to leave.

"I hope to move on with my career, with my life. If that is in France, then so be it. I don't want to be disrespectful to QPR but enough is enough.

"Good night people, I've said enough for today. I'll get in trouble. No doubt. But this is how it is. This if life." Goal

Marooned 5: QPR players fuming after being given the cold shoulder

Bothroyd, Young, Campbell, Hulse and Smith can't understand why Mark Hughes is treating them so badly

Dead wood: Mark Hughes has ignored players signed by former boss Neil Warnock Dead wood: Mark Hughes has ignored players signed by former boss Neil Warnock

Queens Park Rangers have dumped five senior players into training ground exile.

Jay Bothroyd, Luke Young, DJ Campbell, Rob Hulse and Tommy Smith were all ordered to train away from the rest of the first team squad.

Along with bad boy Joey Barton, who has been told he can move on, the quintet were not allocated squad numbers as boss Mark Hughes made it clear they were surplus to his requirements.

Smith joined Cardiff on Friday but the other quartet are still on the payroll and unhappy at their treatment.

A source close to the players said: “They find the way they have been treated disrepectful. They have not been a moment’s trouble to the club. They cannot understand what is going on and why this has happened.”

Both striker Bothroyd and full-back Young are England internationals and, along with Campbell and Hulse, believe they have done nothing to justify the cold shoulder treatment from Rangers.

They have been ordered to report at various times since the players returned to full training after the summer break.

Sometimes they must work together from 4pm.

On other occasions, they are told to report at 9am and stay until 5pm with no inter-action with the first team squad.

All five players were signed by former boss Neil Warnock who was sacked in January to make way for Hughes.

They were part of the squad that ensured Rangers survived in their first season back in the top flight.

The players have made their feelings known to the PFA and the union representative at the club – midfielder Shaun Derry – is also aware of their feelings.

Bothroyd turned his career around after he was kicked out of Arsenal as a young player for throwing his shirt at coach Don Howe when he was substituted. He played for Perugia in Italy and went to Cardiff where he excelled.

He became one of the few players from outside the top flight to play for England when he won his England cap against France in 2010.

He was taken on by Rangers after his contract expired in July last year.

Bothroyd is rated highly by former Cardiff boss Dave Jones, now in charge at Sheffield Wednesday. The ambitious Yorkshire club would like to see the striker join their bid for successive promotions and a return to the top flight, but his £30,000 a-week wages are proving a stumbling block.

Young cost £1million when signed from Aston Villa and Warnock praised both his attititude and his versaility. The 33-year-old can play at both full-back and in central defence and played seven times for England.

Striker Campbell cost £1.2m when he joined from Blackpool last August, while Hulse, 32, was a £500,000 signing from Derby in 2010.

Campbell has had talks with Blackpool recently but was unable to agree terms while Hulse is believed to be ready to allow his contract to run down which will make him a free agent at the end of this season. Mirror

NORWICH vs QPR

Dave McINtyre/West London Sport - QPR boss encouraged after ‘important step’

Mark Hughes felt his side’s result at Norwich – QPR’s first away point since he took over as manager – was a definite step in the right direction.

Bobby Zamora’s equaliser secured a 1-1 draw for Rangers at Carrow Road, where the home side took an early lead through Simoen Jackson.

Rangers’ display encouraged Hughes following the humiliation of the 5-0 thrashing by Swansea on the opening day.

Zamora netted for Rangers.

Hughes said: “Obviously we had a bad day last weekend and it was important to get something.

“It was also the first away point we’ve been able to accrue while I’ve been the manager, which is a bonus and something to build on.

“It’s an important step. We’re off the mark in terms of scoring as well, so there’s a couple of landmarks there for us.

“On occasions we just lacked the right ball at the right time. We could have freed Djibril Cisse and didn’t quite give him the service he thrives on.

“We can certainly get the ball down and play a lot more. But in terms of getting a positive result, we’ll take this.”

Hughes insisted the decision to award Rangers the first-half penalty which led to their goal was correct.

Norwich felt aggrieved that a spot-kick was given for an apparent foul on Cisse by Sebastien Bassong and also felt Zamora encroached into the box before scoring from the rebound after Cisse had missed.

“I think there were about seven players in the box,” Hughes argued.

“There was contact for the penalty and if you make contact there is always the potential there for a penalty. By the letter of the law it was a penalty.”

Gaffer pleased with a point at Carrow Road

We’ll take the positives out of it because we were very poor last weekend."

Mark Hughes

R’S BOSS Mark Hughes was pleased to see his side kick-start their season with a point at Carrow Road.

Rangers trailed early on to Simeon Jackson’s goal, only for Bobby Zamora to level from close range following Djibril Cisse’s saved spot-kick.

Hughes told www.qpr.co.uk: “We’ll take the positives out of it because we were very poor last weekend.

“It was important that we showed up today and I thought we did that.

“It was a game of few chances in fairness, but in terms of our organisation and quality it was a vast improvement.

“They utilised the threat of Holt very well in the first half, but I thought we improved defensively in the second half and Anton marshalled him very well, to the extent that they had to make a change.

“All in all, we can be encouraged from what we took from the game.

“It’s only my second away point in charge here, so that’s got to be a positive as well.”

Hughes added: “it gives us something to build on.

“We know we can improve markedly on that performance in terms of our quality, but we’re a new team and we will improve.

“The longer we spend together as a group, the better we’ll become.”

Goalscorer Zamora received a deep gash to his head midway through the second half and Hughes added: “It’s a bad gash for Bobby.

“I thought he was excellent today and showed what we missed on the opening day.

“He’ll definitely miss Tuesday night against Walsall and we’ll have to wait and see for Manchester City.”  QPR

Zamora secures a point for Rangers

Norwich 1 QPR 1

Bobby Zamora’s equaliser secured QPR’s first Premier League point of the season.

Zamora netted from the rebound after Djibril Cisse’s penalty had been pushed onto the post by Norwich keeper John Ruddy.

Rangers looked vulnerable at the back throughout, but their performance was a marked improvement on the opening-day shambles against Swansea.

And there was a debut for recent signing Jose Bosingwa, who came on as a second-half substitute.

Norwich – themselves beaten 5-0 by Fulham last weekend – punished some slack defending to go ahead in the 12th minute.

Fabio, who started at right-back in place of Nedum Onuoha, was sucked into the middle, enabling Anthony Pilkington to collect Robert Snodgrass’ pass and cross from the left for Simeon Jackson to head home from close range.

Rangers were handed a lifeline six minutes later, when Sebastien Bassong, making his Canaries debut, was adjudged to have fouled Cisse in the area.

Cisse was unable to convert the resulting spot-kick, but Zamora was on hand to rifle the loose ball into the far corner of the net.

Jackson squandered a great chance early in the second period, while Cisse inexplicably failed to connect properly after Zamora’s chip into the box found the Frenchman in acres of space with only Ruddy to beat.

Rangers were almost made to pay for that miss when Russell Martin headed Pilkington’s cross against the bar.

Norwich City fail to make chances count in draw with QPR

The last time Norwich City were managed by someone other than Paul Lambert at Carrow Road they lost 7-1 to Colchester, so this was an improvement of sorts. However this was a frustrating afternoon for Chris Hughton, who is still waiting for his first win as Norwich manager since replacing Lambert in the summer, as his new side were held to a disappointing draw by an expensively assembled but distinctly underwhelming Queens Park Rangers.

It was not difficult work out why both sides suffered humiliating 5-0 defeats last Saturday. In Fabio Da Silva, QPR had a player who started at right-back for Manchester United in the Champions League final last year, yet it did not take long for Anthony Pilkington to penetrate on the left.

After 11 minutes, Robert Snodgrass found Pilkington in space and the winger's cross to the far post was headed in from close range by Simeon Jackson after 11 minutes. A simple goal, but beautiful in its efficiency.

QPR were all over the place and with their midfield offering little protection, their defence was as exposed as a prince in Las Vegas. Mark Hughes has been criticised for his scattergun transfer policy, yet as his side floundered during a frantic start his attempts to sign Ricardo Carvalho and Michael Dawson from Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur respectively made sense. On this evidence, they could do with both and possibly more.

However if QPR could not rely on their defence to keep them in the game, they could at least count on Norwich's to offer them a route back into it.

Only seven minutes after Jackson's opener, Junior Hoilett slid a pass into the Norwich area towards Djibril Cissé, who was clumsily brought down by Sébastien Bassong, making an inauspicious debut after his move from Tottenham. QPR's appeal was not loud, Norwich's protests were, but Mark Clattenburg's decision looked sound and although John Ruddy brilliantly pushed Cissé's penalty on to the left post, Bobby Zamora swept home the rebound.

The equaliser was thoroughly against the run of play and Norwich remained the more fluent side. The influential Snodgrass wriggled into the area, only to see his low cross cleared yards from his own goal by Anton Ferdinand, before the former Leeds winger forced Robert Green into a superb save with a drive from 25 yards.

Hughes responded by replacing Clint Hill, who was lucky not to be sent off for two bookings having lost his wrestling match against Grant Holt, with Nedum Onuoha. Little changed, however, Jackson bursting into the area shortly after the restart and firing into the side-netting. Then Green, making his first appearance at Carrow Road since leaving for West Ham six years ago, was fortunate to escape when he appeared to handle outside the area. No wonder QPR have been linked with the Internazionale goalkeeper Júlio César despite Green only arriving at Loftus Road this summer.

Although the visitors gradually grew in confidence they were largely restricted to speculative efforts, Norwich continued to create the clearer chances. Leon Barnett should have done better than to put a free header wide from a free-kick, before Snodgrass raced past the sluggish Armand Traoré, and curled in a cross that Jackson missed by inches.

Norwich's best chance came with 20 minutes left. Jonny Howson's delightful cross from the left was met by Snodgrass at the far post, but with Green rooted to the spot, his powerful header flew inches over the bar. While Snodgrass's approach play oozed class, his disappointment at wasting such a glorious opportunity was palpable.

By now, QPR could barely get out of their own half – and whenever they did try to mount a counterattack the dozy Cissé was repeatedly caught offside - and they escaped again when Russell Martin's looping header clanged against the bar with seven minutes remaining.

That miss seemed to deflate Norwich, who were unable to fashion another opening despite concerted pressure. QPR will know they should have left with nothing. For all their spending they are not a team but a collection of individuals who desperately need to gel sooner rather than later and after last week's thrashing at home by Swansea, a first point of the season was more than they merited. Not that they will turn their noses up at it.

It will do for now, but Hughes will know there is plenty of work to be done. Simply throwing money at the problem may not be the answer.

NORWICH 1, QPR 1

Spoils shared at Carrow Road ...
QPR came from behind to earn a point against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

An entertaining affair throughout, the Canaries took the lead after only 11 minutes when Simeon Jackson headed home Anthony Pilkington’s hanging cross.

But Rangers responded just eight minutes later to take a share of the spoils.

Djibril Cisse saw his penalty saved after Junior Hoilett was originally felled in the box, before Bobby Zamora was on hand to drill home the loose ball.

How they lined up …

In light of last weekend’s home defeat to Swansea City, Hughes made two changes to his Rangers side for the trip to Carrow Road.

Armand Traore and Zamora both came into the starting line-up, with Nedum Onuoha and Adel Taarabt dropping to the bench. New signing Jose Bosingwa was also among the substitutes.

The changes meant the R’s reverted to a 4-4-2 formation.

Rob Green kept his place in goal, behind a back four of Fabio da Silva, Anton Ferdinand, Clint Hill and Traore.

Captain Ji-Sung Park partnered Samba Diakite in the centre of midfield, with Jamie Mackie and Hoilett marshalling the flanks.

Zamora joined Cisse in attack.

For the home side, there were debuts for both Sebastien Bassong and Javier Garrido following their recent moves from Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio respectively.

First half …

The contest enjoyed an extremely open start, with the visitors fashioning the first attempt in the 7th minute.

Cisse instigated the move, finding Mackie down the right who ghosted past his marker before dragging a low effort straight at John Ruddy.

But Norwich were soon on the attack themselves – finding the opening goal of the afternoon on 11 minutes.

Jackson and Grant Holt combined excellently before the latter found Pilkington out wide on the left.

In space, the Canaries wide-man looked up before delivering a telling cross for Jackson on six yards, who had the simple task of heading home.

It took Rangers just eight minutes to put themselves on terms.

Hughes’s men were originally awarded a penalty after Hoilett’s ball into the box saw debutant Bassong clatter into the back of Cisse.

The French ace also stepped up to take the spot-kick. However, when his effort forced a fine stop from Ruddy, Zamora was alert to smash home the loose ball.

Already boasting two goals, this was fast becoming a scrappy affair but one that saw Norwich enjoy the better chances as the first half progressed.

Russell Martin nodded a Robert Snodgrass free-kick past the post on 25 minutes, before Pilkington’s rasping low drive was caught at the second attempt by Green a minute later.

The R’s keeper was also called into action three minutes before half-time, tipping Snodgrass’s 25-yard blast around the post.

Second half …

With Hill – who enjoyed a fierce battle with Holt in the first period – already on a booking, Hughes opted to introduce Onuoha at the defender’s expense at the interval.

Norwich had the first opportunity of the second half just a minute in. Jackson turned on a misplaced clearance before firing a shot into the side-netting.

Rangers missed a chance of their own three minutes later. Zamora’s lovely, dinked pass over the top of the Canaries defence put Cisse in the clear, but the striker was unable connect with the former Fulham
man’s ball.

Jackson was then involved once again for City in the 52nd minute, thundering an effort over the bar from 20-yards out.

Much like the first half, this was a fast-paced, end-to-end spectacle – not always pleasing on the eye, though nonetheless real edge of the seat stuff.

Rangers grew in confidence as the half progressed – as did their possession count.

It was Norwich, however, who went close in the 65th minute, after Leon Barnett headed Snodgrass’s teasing free-kick wide from close range.

Snodgrass was again involved two minutes later, breaking away from Traore before his cross just evaded Jackson.

City missed an even better opportunity soon after, with Snodgrass in the thick of the play once more when he somehow headed Jonny Howson’s pinpoint centre just over.

Jose Bosingwa was handed his Rangers debut in the 70th minute, brought on to replace Traore.

Norwich almost won it in the 83rd minute. Pilkington’s cross from the left was met by Martin, whose header smashed off the face of the bar.
