Haaretz - Nothing comes easily By Shaul Adar
LONDON - Ben Sahar sounded pleased yesterday after coming in as a 56th-minute substitute for his new club, Queens Park Rangers, during a 1-0 victory over Wycombe in a training match yesterday.
"I felt like I played well and it was fun to play," he said. "Everybody at the club received me very well. The transfer from Chelsea was completely smooth and the goal is to play as much as possible."
That is also the goal for the small west London club during Sahar's short loan period: playing as much as possible, picking up experience, confidence and goals. Chelsea's management and Sahar's family decided at the beginning that the player would stay in London, but it was a surprise that they chose QPR over Charlton. The club from southeast London, which was relegated to the second division this past season, is held in higher regard than QPR in every aspect and is favored to return to the Premier League.
Alan Pardew, the head coach at Charlton, is thought of as one of the best coaches in England, his budget for players is reasonable after selling Darren Bent to Tottenham for 16.5 million pounds and the squad, which consists of international and former international players, does not have the look of a second-division team. On the other hand, QPR takes out loans to open the season, is about to lose its home ground and most of its fans will make do with not being relegated any further.
"I was ready to go to Charlton and fight for a spot in the starting lineup, but Chelsea preferred that I move to Rangers and play," says Sahar.
There are two ways of looking at this. Either Chelsea feared that the young striker would not be chosen for the first team at Charlton, or as an encouraging sign ahead of January, when Chelsea will be missing a number of players who will be involved with the African Cup of Nations. Mourinho is likely to include Sahar in the senior team starting lineup and he wants the forward to play as much as possible.
Up until now, Sahar, who was able to introduce himself to the glow of Stamford Bridge via the warm and cozy confines of Chelsea's reserve squad, is set to meet English soccer head on. The difference between a match against Wigan or Manchester United at Stamford Bridge and a nighttime encounter in the middle of the winter against a raucous crowd at Barnsley or Cardiff can be measured in light years. JERUSALEM POST - Ben Sahar makes debut for QPR
By ALLON SINAI
Ben Sahar made his debut for Queens Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon after joining the League Championship side for an initial three-month loan deal on Thursday night.
The 17-year-old Israel international, who will officially join from Chelsea on August 1, played 34 minutes in the second half of QPR's 1-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
.....Sahar, who joined the Chelsea youth academy from Hapoel Tel Aviv in May 2006 in a deal worth a reported $600,000, will wear the No. 17 shirt and is sure his time in the Championship will help him further his career.
"The style of football here is much more aggressive and you need to be stronger," he acknowledged. "The Championship is very tough, so it can only improve me as a player. That is why I am very happy to be here. I can't wait to wear the QPR shirt." Jerusalem Post

QPR OFFICIAL SITE - JOHN GREGORY POST MATCH COMMENTS
TOUGH WORK-OUT - Sat 28 Jul 2007
Rangers boss John Gregory was pleased with the work-out his players got against a determined Wycombe side this afternoon.
Following the 1-0 win, the R's manager told www.qpr.co.uk: "The scoreline probably flattered us a little bit. I would have liked to see us win more comfortably, but it was a worthwhile exercise.
"I want us to have difficult times and for things not to run smoothly. It's a good test.
"We've got a few problems that need to be ironed out.
"We looked a little disjointed as the new players bedded in but, in general, they settled well.
"They've possibly got to get used to how we play, but I thought John Curtis and Simon Walton both did well."
Lee Camp received an excellent reception from the travelling Rangers fans at the start of the match, and he reminded Gregory - if he needed reminding - what a great keeper he is with a stunning second-half save.
The gaffer acknowledged: "He's got legendary status written all over him, and he's only 22!
"His save in the second half was incredible, and right out of the Lee Camp text book.
"Mick Harford said to me at one point, 'How much did we pay for him again?' I think Mick was taken aback by just how good Lee is.
"We've got two more run-outs against Harrow and Fulham, which will finish us off nicely ahead of the first game of the season against Bristol City." QPR

An inch-perfect free-kick from Martin Rowlands earned QPR their first win of pre-season against Wycombe at Adams Park.
In a game of few scoring opportunities, Rowlands settled the contest with a free-kick that dipped over the defensive wall and into the top corner.
The early chances fell to the home side, with Scott McGleish attempting a cheeky chip from 35 yards out, but it was easily fielded by Camp.
The new Rangers number one - warmly applauded by the travelling fans when he jogged on to the field - denied McGleish again soon afterwards, keeping out an overhead kick.
An early slip from another QPR debutant, Simon Walton, nearly let Wycombe in again, but John Sutton fired his shot wastefully straight at Camp.
For Rangers, Ray Jones might have done better with a header from Martin Rowlands' free-kick, but guided the chance wide.
Without much service coming his way, Jones let his frustration show when he was booked for a late challenge on Leon Johnson.
But when the Rs did get a chance five minutes before the interval, they made it count. Wycombe conceded a free-kick 25 yards out and Rowlands flighted his shot perfectly into the roof of the net, out of the reach of Wanderers' keeper Scott Shearer.
Wanderers almost hit back immediately as Camp tipped over a looping McGleish header over the bar, but Rangers went in with the advantage at half-time.
And only the woodwork prevented Wycombe from levelling soon after the restart as Sutton's drive bounced off the bar with Camp clawing at thin air.
John Gregory opted to freshen up his side with a triple substitution, bringing on Sam Timoska and Stefan Moore, as well as striker Ben Sahar for his QPR debut.
But Wycombe continued to press and Jermaine Easter got past Timoska to force another vital save from Camp.
And, with 10 minutes to go, Easter broke the offside trap and found himself with just replacement goalkeeper Jake Cole to beat, but hesitated far too long and Timoska lunged in to take the ball off his toes.
Lewis Christon headed over late on from a corner, but Cole remained relatively untroubled as Rangers held firm to secure the win.
Wycombe: Scott Shearer (Jamie Young), Sam Stockley (Russell Martin), Craig Woodman (Chris Palmer), Andre Boucaud (Matt Bloomfield), David McCracken (Lewis Christon), Leon Johnson, Martin Bullock (Robert Rice), Sergio Torres (Stefan Oakes), John Sutton, Scott McGleish (Jermaine Easter), Tom Williams (Derek Duncan).
QPR: Lee Camp (Jake Cole 65), Michael Mancienne, Dominic Shimmin (Sam Timoska 56), Damion Stewart, John Curtis (Zesh Rehman 79), Danny Nardiello (Stefan Moore 56), Adam Bolder, Simon Walton (Stefan Bailey 86), Martin Rowlands, Dexter Blackstock (Marc Nygaard 79), Ray Jones(Ben Sahar 56). ROWLANDS RETURNS TO STEAL THE SHOW
Sat 28 Jul 2007 - By Dale Hurman
Former Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Martin Rowlands returned to Adams Park and shown as his Queens Park Rangers nicked a 1-0 win.
Rowlands scored the only goal of the game on 41 minutes, curling home a sweet right-foot shot direct from a free-kick. It was the visitors first shot on target for the Championship outfit who were made to defend for much of the game.
The home side kicked off the first half and the busy McGleish soon robbed Mancienne and fed the ball to triallist Boucaud who fired wide.
Rangers goalkeeper Lee Camp was called into action on a number of times but dealt comfortably with everything that was thrown at him.
The first half saw some fine touches from both Boucaud and Torres as they teased their opponents with their fancy footwork that was warmly applauded by the appreciative crowd. Rangers striker Ray Jones, courted by Colchester United in the summer, was rightly booked after two crude challenges, the first on Woodman followed a minute later on Johnson.
Torres fired wide after excellent play between Martin Bullock and the latest Blues' signing Tom Williams. The winning goal came when David McCracken went to ground and handled the ball. Rowlands ensured the Blues' were fully punished.
Bloomfield, one of five players introduced at half-time, was back to his tenacious best in midfield and six minutes into the second half he played a fine throw ball to Easter, the ball ran loose to Sutton who was thwarted by Camp.
The Blues nearly found an equalising goal when John Sutton fired in a spectacular shot from twenty yards which brought out an out-standing one handed save from Lee Camp.
Bullock then capitalised on a mistake by Curtis, cut inside before firing his shot just wide of the far post. On the hour mark Williams put Easter through but his low shot was saved one-handed by Camp.
There were a number of changes from both sides in the second half and naturally the pace of the game slowed. Martin Rowlands showed his skill with a couple of mazy runs that brought a couple of corners but Rangers never seriously tested Young in the Wanderers goal.
With 9 minutes remaining Stefan Oakes played a delicious through ball which found Jermaine Easter clear and with the goal at his mercy. Unfortunately he dwelt on the ball just a second too long and Rangers substitute Sam Timoska saved the day with a crucial tackle.
Leon Johnson sent a late header over from a Russell Martin corner and Rangers held on to the win.
Despite defeat it was an encouraging performance from the Blues and they can now look forward to two more difficult friendlies before the season starts for real.
Wycombe Wanderers: Shearer (Young 62), Stockley (Martin HT), Woodman (Palmer HT), Boucaud (Bloomfield HT), McCracken (Christon 62), Bullock (Rice 62), Torres (Oakes HT), Sutton, McGleish (Easter HT), Williams (Duncan 62). Subs not used: Gregory, Cadmore, Massey and Cattell.

Former Wanderer Martin Rowlands scored the only goal of the game, curling a 22-yard free-kick directly past Scott Shearer after 41 minutes.
The hosts had looked the more threatening up to that point, and created three great chances in the second period.

Birthdays for Two Ex-QPR Goalies: Day and Ron Springett
-
Today is Chris Day's 32 birthday. And just passed: Arguably QPR's ever-greatest goalie (competing with Reg Allen, Phil Parkes and David Seaman for that honour)...Ron Springett turned 72.
Ex-QPR Goalie, Chris Day, Turns 32
Born July 28, 1975.
Joined QPR six years ago on a free Transfer from Watford as Ian Holloway started rebuilding the team after their relegation to the (old) Division Three. Played 87 games for QPR including the Playoff Final defeat in Cardiff. A year after our return to the First Division, Day joined Oldham on a free. Now with Millwall.
Ray Wilkins originally tried to sign Day when he was an England-U-21 goalie at Spurs (at the same time that Wilkins signed Steve Slade) Soccerbase
Ron Springett
Born July 22, 1935
Started with QPR. Was transferred to Sheffield Wednesday in 1958 (while continuing to train with QPR). Rejoined QPR in 1967, while his goalkeeping brother, Peter Springett (RIP) joined Sheffield Wednesday. Retired in 1969. While with Sheffield Wednesday, capped 33 times for England.

Ron Springett's achievements during his nine years at Hillsborough earned him the tag of the greatest goalkeeper in SWFC history.
His 33 England caps between 1959 and 1966 made him the most-capped player in the Clubs' history - a record which he held for 26 years. He also represented the Football League on nine occasions.
Springett joined Wednesday from Queens Park Rangers in March 1958, and it could be argued that had he been recruited a little earlier in the campaign, the Club could have avoided relegation. However, he was influential as the Owls bounced straight back up the following year.
His form was a stabilising influence as the team performed impressively on their return to the top flight, finishing fifth in 1959/60 and runners-up the following season.
Ron continued to impress as both Wednesday and England number one as the Club consistently finished in the top half of Division One. In 1966, Springett was a senior member of the side which reached the FA Cup Final. Although he remained first choice goalkeeper throughout his stint at the club, it is of interest to note that he was never actually an ever-present during that time. Springett is famed for the fact that he continued to live in London after his transfer to Wednesday, training with QPR during the week and travelling to games at the weekend. Ever the model professional, Ron's performances were always immaculate despite the extra travelling.
Springett returned to Loftus Road in June 1967 as part of a unique deal which saw his younger brother Peter, also a goalkeeper, move in the other direction.

QPR's Lee Camp Talks About Moving On From Derby
-
Camp: Time to move on - Derby Evening TElegraph BY STEVE NICHOLSON
Goalkeeper Lee Camp headed out of Pride Park yesterday afternoon as Derby County stepped up their bid to bring in Portsmouth defender Andy Griffin.
Derby-born Camp became the first departure of the summer when he joined Queens Park Rangers in a £300,000 deal.
After putting pen to paper on a three-year contract at Loftus Road, the 22-year-old spoke of how proud he feels to have played for his home-town club but now he is looking forward to a fresh start with QPR...
Uncertainty had surrounded Camp's future at Derby for a number of months and this increased when the club brought in two keepers.
Welsh international Lewis Price, 23, arrived from Ipswich Town on Thursday and 18-year-old Ben Hinchliffe was signed earlier this month after being released by Preston.
Camp was already second choice behind Stephen Bywater, who is set to make his first appearance of pre-season in Derby's game against Mansfield Town at Field Mill today.
"Joining QPR is an opportunity to play first-team football," said Camp.
"I just felt I would drop to number three in the pecking order at Derby and so the move is a fresh start for me and a new challenge.
"I am proud to have played for my home-town club and I wish everybody at Derby all the best for the season."
Billy Davies said he spoke to Camp a few weeks ago about staying and fighting for a place.
"Lee did not come back to me," added the Rams boss, "and so it was evident to me he wanted to go and become number one at QPR. I felt I had to go into the marketplace for another keeper."
Camp is back at QPR where he enjoyed two successful loan spells and Rangers boss John Gregory is delighted to have landed the England Under-21 international. "I have finally got my number one priority of the summer in," said the ex-Rams boss.
"Lee played an integral part in helping us to maintain our Championship status last season. He is an outstanding goalkeeper and his arrival is a massive boost, not only to the squad but also the supporters."
Camp is set to play in a friendly at Wycombe today.
He came up through the Academy at Derby, turned professional in 2002 and made 98 first-team appearances.
His debut was at Walsall in April 2003 when he replaced Lee Grant at half time and he established himself as the number one in 2004-05. He was outstanding as the Rams reached the Championship play-offs under George Burley and picked up the young player of the year award.
Camp remained in possession of the gloves the following season apart from a six-match spell when he lost his place to goalkeeping coach Kevin Poole.
But last season he found himself out of favour despite playing in the opening game against Southampton.
Billy Davies signed Bywater from West Ham and Camp went in search of football by joining Norwich and QPR on loan.
His first loan stint at QPR was in March 2004 when he helped them to win promotion from League One and he was a key figure in the London club's battle to beat relegation last season. - Evening Telegraph

On Saturday afternoon, QPR travel to Wycombe Wanderers for their second friendly of the pre-season campaign.
Although results aren't important at this stage, manager John Gregory will be hoping for a positive outcome at Adams Park.
While many changes were made during the match against Celtic earlier this month, Gregory is planning to field a strong side for this fixture where a large number of the players will be expected to complete 90 minutes.
Meanwhile, Ben Sahar and Michael Mancienne - who officially join on loan from Chelsea at the start of next month - have been given permission by their parent club to take part in this fixture.
No fewer than nine players have joined Wycombe in the summer and, with this weekend's match their only home friendly of the pre-season, Wanderers fans are likely to be out in their numbers.
And it is a game that Gregory is looking forward to.
"After all the activity off the pitch in the last four weeks, I am getting closer now to a starting line-up for the forthcoming season," he said.
"I will be taking a 20-man squad to Adams Park and I am thoroughly looking forward to the game. It will be a very stern test for us."
The Rangers boss, who managed Wycombe between 1996 and 1998, added:
"It will be nice for me to go back there and see a lot of old familiar faces, although, fortunately, Brownie and Rhino will not be playing against us!" QPR

It's been three months since Paul Lambert's side appeared at Adams Park, and after making wholesale changes to his squad over the summer, the 'gaffer' is looking forward to tomorrow's encounter...:
The 'gaffer' has signed ten new players this summer, all of whom are likely to feature tomorrow afternoon against the Rangers, and Lambert feels that the new arrivals are bedding in well:
"When you get so many new players you need them to settle in and gel quickly. We needed lads who'd played a lot of games and had a lot of experience, and that's what we've got which should stand us in good stead. I've got an idea of my starting line-up for the Accrington game but the ones who aren't involved are just as important - it's a squad game."
"We've got the luxury of back-up throughout the squad. If anything happens to one of the players, we've got strong enough lads to cope. We'll be playing a massive amount of matches this season and we'll need a big enough squad to see us through."
"Some of the lads might play for an hour or so against QPR. We'll try to change it around and let the lads get match fitness under their belts. QPR have got a decent side, and John Gregory has got them going well. They're a Championship side so it'll be difficult for us, but I'm looking forward to it."
And the manager has issued a rallying call of support to everyone involved with the club to help the team push towards promotion this season:
"The most important people in this club are the players and the people that watch the team. The fans will play a massive part and if we can all pull in the same direction then we won't be far away at the end of the season."
New signing Gary Holt could be forced to sit out the clash with John Gregory's side due to the wrist injury he sustained on the pre-season tour of Germany. However, midfield duo Chris Palmer and Matt Bloomfield, who have recently been recovering knocks, have returned to full fitness and should feature in the friendly.
Long term absentees Mike Williamson and Will Antwi are the only players definitely missing from tomorrow's squad, and summer arrivals John Sutton, David McCracken and Martin Bullock are all set to appear at Adams Park for the first time.
For the Rangers, new loan signing Ben Sahar could make his first appearance in the Hoops following his move from Chelsea. The Israelian international could be joined by fellow new arrivals Daniel Nardiello and John Curtis as the R's take part in their second friendly, following a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Glasgow Celtic.

WILLIAMS MAKES IT A PERFECT TEN
Posted on: Thu 26 Jul 2007
Blues have captured their tenth signing of the summer in the form of left-sided player Tom Williams, subject to international clearance.
The 27-year-old, who can list Birmingham and West Ham amongst his former clubs, has put pen to paper on a two-year-deal with the Wanderers and brings to an end Paul Lambert's long search for new players:
"That's my ten signings completed," the Blues' boss told wwfc.com. "We've got a very strong squad now and we're going to give it a really good go this season to try and get out of this league."
Lambert declared at the beginning of the summer that he was looking to bring in ten new faces to bolster his squad, and following the arrivals of Martin Bullock, Craig Woodman, Scott Shearer, David McCracken, Leon Johnson, Derek Duncan, John Sutton, Jack Obersteller and Gary Holt, the signing of Williams completes the set.
The Carshalton-born player can be classed as an international, having made one appearance for the Cyprus national team in 2006 courtesy of his mother's nationality. He began his career at non-league Walton & Hersham before being snapped up by West Ham United for a fee of £40,000.
However, Williams left the Hammers in 2001 without making an appearance, moving to Peterborough United on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell. The following year, he made the switch to Birmingham City for £350,000, again after a stint on loan, but was loaned out to QPR on two separate occasions.
Another brief loan period at Peterborough was followed by a free transfer to Barnsley, where he made 39 appearances. After one season with the Tykes, Williams returned down south to play for Gillingham, appearing alonside new Wanderers recruit Leon Johnson, before moving to Swansea City last summer.
A change in management at the Liberty Stadium towards the end of the campaign resulted in Williams' release from the Swans in May, and after a long process, Paul Lambert is thrilled to have got his man:
"I'm absolutely delighted at signing him. We've been trying to get him all summer, and there's been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing. He's a terrific player who's played a lot of games at a higher level.
"I saw him play against us for Swansea in the Carling Cup last season and was impressed with him, and I'm very happy to have signed him."
Williams passed his medical on Thursday evening and is now awaiting the minor formality of international clearance to complete his move, having most recently played in Wales. Wycombe

The Football League is looking to repeat its recent Under-21
fixture against the Italian League next season in what it hopes willbecome an annual contest. The
two Leagues met at Hull City’s KC Stadium last month, for the
first time since 1998, with The Football League triumphing 1-0.
The match is viewed as the pinnacle of The Football League’s
successful Youth Development
programme and of the seventeen
players used eleven came from
Championship clubs, five from
League 1 and one from League 2,
giving team manager and England
Under-21 boss Peter Taylor the
opportunity to cast his eye over
the best young players in The Football League.
The League’s Chief Operating
Officer Andy Williamson
commented ‘The match was a
great success and showed just
how much young talent there is
in The Football League. Our clubs
are contributing a great deal to
the development of young players
for the national team and this
match gives those players
a chance to impress and earn
themselves a future in

The game itself, played against
players from Italy’s Serie B, was
settled by a header from
Southampton’s Dexter Blackstock
in the 68th minute and was played
in front of an appreciative crowd
of 6,265 with children under the
age of seven admitted free as part
of The League’s ‘Fans of the
Future’ initiative.
Following the game Taylor
commented ‘It’s been a very
positive night. This inter-League
game is a very good fixture. It gives
players a chance to impress and,
for myself as the England Under-21
manager, it gives me the
opportunity to look more closely
at players.
‘To beat Italy you have to work
hard and that’s exactly what we did.
Lots of pluses came out of the game
and a lot of players have done
themselves no harm whatsoever - all
of them have the potential to play for
the England Under-21’s.’
True to his word, in the week
following the game, Taylor
selected five players from his
Football League team - including
for the first time MK Dons’ Izale
McLeod - in his squad for the U21
international against Norway at
Reading, which England went on
to win 3-1.

Confirmed: Charlton's Simon Walton Signs for QPR
-
QPR OFFICIAL SITE - ADDICKS ACE SIGNS
QPR are delighted to announce the £200,000 signing of Charlton Athletic ace Simon Walton.
The 19-year-old midfielder has penned a three-year deal at Loftus Road and, in doing so, becomes John Gregory's seventh arrival of the summer, following in the footsteps of Chris Barker, Danny Nardiello, John Curtis, Michael Mancienne, Ben Sahar and Lee Camp.
"I'm glad it is all sorted out,'' Walton told www.qpr.co.uk. "I've already played five full games during pre-season with Charlton, so I feel fresh and I'm raring to go.
"I like to put my foot in as a player, and give my all for the team. I'd run through a brick wall if asked to.
"I might not play well every week, but I will always give 100 per cent. That's probably one of the main pluses of my game.
"Now I can't wait for the first game of the season against Bristol City on 11th August."
A product of the Leeds United academy, Walton made his professional debut at the tender age of 16.
He went on to make 37 appearances in all competitions for the Whites, before joining Charlton Athletic for a fee of £500,000 at the start of the 2006/07 season.
Iain Dowie's surprise early sacking at The Valley disrupted Walton's progress though, and he spent time on loan at Ipswich Town and Cardiff City.
The tough tackling midfielder, who can also play in defence, scored against the R's last season, in the Tractor Boys' 3-1 win at Loftus Road in August.
Gaffer John Gregory believes he can get the best out of a player once likened to Leeds United and England international David Batty, commenting: "Simon has been a victim of circumstance in the last 18 months or so.
"I think that we will benefit greatly from the fact that Iain Dowie signed Simon at Charlton and Alan Pardew's arrival has meant that Alan wants his own players in his team.
"Consequently, Simon has become surplus to his requirements.
"Simon is 19 years old but his presence on the field belies his age.
"I think he is going to quickly become a fans' favourite with his no-nonsense approach and 100% commitment to wearing the blue and white hooped shirt."
Walton will wear the No.19 shirt. QPR
CHARLTON OFFICIAL SITE - Walton joins QPR
Simon Walton has left The Valley to join Charlton's Championship neighbours Queens Park Rangers.
The versatile defender-cum-midfielder, who spent two spells away from SE7 on loan last term, has sealed a permanent £200,000 switch to Loftus Road.
Walton, 19, was the first signing of the Iain Dowie era last summer, but spent most of the campaign plying his trade for both Ipswich Town and Cardiff City in the second tier.
And he actually netted against the Hoops in the second match of his initial spell as a Tractor Boy, converting a 62nd-minute penalty as Ipswich came from behind to win 3-1 in West London.
Former boss Dowie initially paid Leeds United £500,000 for his services, though Walton spent time East Anglia and South Wales while the dramatic events unfolded at The Valley.
Having taken the plunge and moved south, the former England U19 international was a regular fixture in Charlton's pre-season campaign, but having played just five games for Leeds the previous campaign, a move to Ipswich Town was seen as a handy step in his route to the Addicks first team.
Immediately catching the eye for the Tractor Boys, his one-month loan was quickly extended to four months and Walton's arrival at Portman Road coincided with a five-match unbeaten run that saw him score two penalties as well as a deflected effort against Birmingham City.
Combative by nature, Walton's no-nonsense presence in the middle of the park saw him collect six yellow cards and a suspension before he was sent off in a 2-1 defeat at Derby County.
Such competitiveness is a trait that has followed Walton throughout his career from the moment he volunteered to take - and score - a penalty in his first Leeds United outing in pre-season, before being later dismissed for two bookings.
And he would go on to feature 38 times for Leeds, netting three goals until his Valley switch.
Meanwhile, after 19 appearances for Ipswich, Walton returned to The Valley and played his one and only reserve-team fixture, skippering the second string to a 1-0 reserve win at Chelsea on January 22nd.
And his progression continued across the Severn Bridge when he joined the Bluebirds nine days later in a bid to aid their promotion push, and life in Wales started in fine fashion when he was named Sky Sports' man of the match on his debut against Barnsley.
A double booking against former club Leeds - the second a harsh decision for diving - saw him take another early bath and face another ban, and then a third red card late in the game against Sheffield Wednesday on April 4th ruled him out for five matches, effectively ending his season.
Walton played in the opening friendly date of the season, helping Charlton to a 5-0 friendly win at Tooting & Mitcham, but he failed to travel with the first team in their recent trip to Spain, instead representing the reserves at non-league duo Wytleleafe and Brentwood Town. Charlton
QPR OFFICIAL SITE IN PROFILE: SIMON WALTON
Simon Walton began his career with Leeds United at the tender age of 16.
His first ever senior appearance for the Elland Road outfit arrived against Spanish giants Valencia in a pre-season friendly in 2004, where he scored a penalty - and received his marching orders for two bookable offences!
Disciplinary problems hardly hindered the England Under-16 international's progress though, and in his first full season as a professional, he racked up an impressive 32 appearances in all competitions, weighing in with priceless goals against Reading, Preston North End and Cardiff City.
The Yorkshiremen could only manage 14th place in the Championship that year, though, and Blackwell's subsequent strivings for a Play-Off place the following season saw a host of established players join the Club. As a result, Walton was only used on five occasions in 2005/06.
A move to Charlton Athletic followed at the start of the 2006/07 campaign.
Walton became Iain Dowie's first signing, for a fee of £500,000, but when Dowie was sacked just 12 games into the new campaign, Walton slipped down the pecking order at The Valley.
He quickly moved on-loan to get some regular first-team football, plying his trade for Ipswich, for whom he made 19 appearances, scoring three goals, including one from the spot against the R's.
After his loan spell with the Tractor Boys ended in January, the highly-rated 19 year-old joined Cardiff Cardiff on loan for the remainder of the season. QPR

QPR Official Site - EXCLUSIVE: CAMP PENS DEAL
The Club are delighted to announce the signing of England Under-21 goalkeeper Lee Camp from Derby County for a fee of £300,000.
After two successful loan spells with the R's, Camp, 22, has finally made his switch to W12 a permanent one, after putting pen to paper on a three-year deal.
The transfer represents somewhat of a coup for gaffer John Gregory, who has always stated his intentions to reunite Camp with the current R's squad, with whom he made such a notable contribution during the latter stages of last season.
The Rangers manager said: "It feels like an absolute eternity since I started competing for the permanent transfer of Lee Camp.
"I have finally managed to get my number one priority of the summer in, and I couldn't be more delighted.
"For the first time as manager of QPR I have found myself in a position where I can pay a transfer fee.
"I have been given a small transfer kitty so I have to spend the money very wisely.
"Lee played an integral part in helping us maintain our Championship status last season. He is an outstanding goalkeeper and his arrival is a massive boost, not only to the squad but also to our supporters.
"Somehow we have managed to put together the £300,000 it has cost us in bringing Lee to Loftus Road, which has been paid directly by QPR and not by any other outside sources.
"When we sold Lee Cook, Chairman Gianni Paladini promised me there would be a percentage of Cookie's fee that I could spend in the market this summer, and he has been true to his word."

The 22-year-old has enjoyed two previous successful loan spells at Loftus Road and he has headed south once again to rejoin John Gregory's Hoops.
Derby-born Camp made his debut for the Rams at the age of 19, late in the 2002/03 season, and made a total of 97 appearances for the club he has supported since childhood.
His first loan to QPR came in the final two months of 2003/04, where he played 12 games in helping them win promotion to the Championship, and a further 11 appearances followed in a three-month spell earlier this year.
Camp was also loaned out to Burton Albion in 2002/03, where played five Conference games before he returned to Derby and made his debut, and he also made three appearances during a spell at Norwich City late in 2006. Derby Official

The 19-year-old, who has progressed through the ranks at Loftus Road, caught Bond's eye during a behind-closed-doors friendly at Chelsea earlier this year.
Baidoo has hit four goals in 34 appearances during his QPR career and featured predominately from the substitutes' bench in their Championship campaign last season.

Confirmation: Chelsea's Ben Sahar Joins QPR on Loan

UPDATE
QPR OFFICIAL - EXCLUSIVE: STRIKER JOINS
Chelsea youngster Ben Sahar is set to join the R's on an initial three-month loan deal.
The 17-year-old striker met his new team-mates for the first time this morning, and is expected to make his debut against Wycombe this weekend.
The loan deal has been agreed with our West London neighbours, and Sahar will officially join QPR on August 1st.
He is regarded as one of Israel's brightest talents and has already represented the full international squad, making his debut at the age of 17 to become his country's youngest ever player.
Sahar, who featured against England in March's goalless Euro 2008 qualifier, will wear the No.17 shirt.
Manager John Gregory was understandably delighted with his latest loan capture, commenting: "It is exciting to have somebody of Ben's undoubted potential being part of our set-up at the start of the new season.
"I use the word 'potential' as Ben has still got his whole career in front of him at the moment.
"Although he has got full caps for the national team and has made first-team appearances for Chelsa in the Premiership, it will still be a big step-up for Ben to become a regular player in the Championship, but we firmly believe it's a step-up that he is more-than-capable of achieving.
"We are delighted to have him here and I am sure he will improve our attacking options. I now have six recognised strikers who are all fighting for two or three places in the team.
"As ever, I would like to pay a debt of gratitude to Chelsea for giving us the opportunity to have him here, and to help him further his English footballing education." QPR
QPR Official Site SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT
Ben Sahar has told www.qpr.co.uk that he is looking forward to life as a Ranger.
The 17-year-old, who is set to join on an initial three-month loan from Chelsea at the start of August, said: "I am excited about this move and feel ready to play for the first-team.
"I have already shown that I know how to score goals, and hopefully I will do that for QPR."
Sahar, who joins Dexter Blackstock, Ray Jones, Stefan Moore, Marc Nygaard and Danny Nardiello to become John Gregory's sixth striker at the Club, added: "I am still young and I need to show that I deserve to be in the QPR team."
The Israeli-born forward signed for Chelsea last summer, and has quickly recognised how different the game is in this country.
"The style of football here is much more aggressive and you need to be stronger," he acknowledged.
"And the Championship is very tough, so it can only improve me as a player. That is why I am very happy to be here."
Sahar is set to make his Rangers debut at Wycombe this weekend, and he added: "I can't wait to wear the QPR shirt."

QPR OFFICIAL SITE - IN PROFILE: BEN SAHAR
Born in Holon, Israel in August 1989, Ben Sahar first shot to prominence at the tender age of 15.
Sahar was spotted by Chelsea scouts whilst representing Israel in an Under-16 fixture against Ireland in 2004.
Described by former boss Itzhak Shum as one of Israel's 'brightest talents,' the highly-rated youngster eventually joined Chelsea from Hapoel Tel Aviv for £230,000 in May 2006, after a successful two month trial at Stamford Bridge.
Sahar, who was granted a Polish citizenship on his arrival in West London, made his Chelsea debut as a second half substitute in the Blues' F.A Cup third round tie against Macclesfield Town in January 2007.
Entering the fray for Salomon Kalou, Sahar enjoyed a productive debut and was used from the bench once again by Jose Mourinho a week later, in the Blues' Premiership fixture against Wigan Athletic.
Four weeks later, at the age of just 17 and a half, Sahar became the youngest player ever to play for Israel, in a friendly match against Ukraine.
In doing so, he became Chelsea's youngest player to earn international recognition.
A second cap against England followed soon after, before he became the youngest player to score for his country in his third a ppearance, bagging a brace against Estonia as a substitute in Israel's 4-0 win. QPR

QPR's Finances, Lee Cook Sale & ABC Loan
-
Daily Mail - July 26 - Rangers saved by £2.5m fee for Cook
Fulham saved west London rivals Queens Park Rangers from administration when they paid £2.5million for winger Lee Cook, it has emerged.
The deal allows the debt-ridden club to repay a £1.3m loan from Panama-based money-lenders, the ABC Corporation, which is secured against Loftus Road.
Rangers already owe ABC £10m from the deal which took the club out of administration in 2002 but needed the extra cash to pay an outstanding tax bill and stave off a winding-up order from HM Revenue and Customs.
The money from last week's Cook transfer will allow the club to pay off the short-term loan and give chairman Gianni Paladini more time to find new investors.
Rangers director Nick De Marco said: "QPR were faced with a winding-up order in July. If the club had not found a substantial sum of money to pay off before 4 July, the club would have been put in administration.
"Faced with that risk and the need to pay various other debts and on-going costs, the club had no alternative than to seek a short-term bridging loan.
"Nobody was prepared to lend the club the sums required in time, apart from ABC. It's not a great agreement for QPR but it was a choice between that and administration. QPR are able to repay the loan now, in part from the proceeds of sale of Lee Cook."
Rangers are understood to be close to refinancing the £10m ABC loan with another money lender.
To aid this process, QPR directors have negotiated an early-repayment clause with ABC, which had not originally been expecting its money back until 2012.
Under the deal, QPR have until 31 July next year to pay off ABC with cash from another lender or the company will have the right to take over ownership of Loftus Road.
The possibility of losing the ground has raised alarm among fans but QPR sources are "extremely confident" the 2008 option will never be exercised.
The club are in advanced negotiations with a new financial backer and hope to make an announcement in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, QPR are lining up a £350,000 move for Charlton midfielder Simon Walton.
Rangers boss John Gregory has earmarked the former Leeds teenager as a partner for Adam Bolder in the centre of his side's midfield. Mail
