Extra Footie: QPR issue black boots only rule
2009-10-26 -
- Queens Park Rangers' assistant academy manager Marc Bircham has imposed a 'no colourful boots' rule on his youth team players in a bid to keep the club's youngsters on the straight and narrow.
- The QPR legend, who played for the Hoops for five seasons between 2002 and 2007, insisted that the rule could be supported by science, but explained that he had made the decision in order to keep young players grounded.
- It is an ironic stance for Canada international Bircham of all people to take given that during his playing days he would match his blue and white boots with streaks of the same colours in his hair when turning out for the Championship side.
- The 31-year-old maintained that while he believes that wearing colourful boots gives any player a disadvantage as he is more easily detected, however the real reason behind the decision was to force players to earn their spurs.
- "It has been proven that if a winger wears coloured football boots it is easier for a full-back to pick them up than if they are wearing black boots. [But] That’s not why we banned them. We just don’t want the players getting too flash!," Bircham is quoted as saying on footyboots.com.
- Bircham affirmed that from Under 9 to Under 18 levels, players would have to earn the right to wear flashier footwear, and that he had also imposed some other old-school techniques in order to let the young stars know their place.
- "The players have to do jobs like clean the senior pros’ boots - things that I had to do when I started as a youth player here, back in 1994.
- "Academies have stopped doing that sort of thing, but we think it gives players a sense of discipline.
- "We have some old-school ideas – like punishments for lateness and insisting they do jobs like cleaning – backed up with state of the art coaching techniques." - Extra Footie

- QPR Loan Player Makes Team of The Week: Jay Simpson

QPR Official Site - SIMPSON MAKES THE GRADE
- R's front-man Jay Simpson has been named in the Football League's Championship Team of the Week following his virtuoso performance at the weekend.
- The Rangers ace bagged his sixth goal of the season, as the R's fought back from 2-0 down to beat Derby County 4-2 at Pride Park.
- Simpson's strike - the R's all-important third of the game - owed as much to his determination as it did his striking prowess, as he held off two defenders before firing the ball beneath Stephen Bywater.
- Produced by the Press Association, the Team of the Week features the eleven top performing players from each division from the weekend matches.

Derby Evening Telegraph - Goals either side of half-time proved so crucial, says Clough
Monday, October 26, 2009,
- DERBY County manager Nigel Clough pointed to goals conceded either side of half-time as crucial moments in their home defeat by Queens Park Rangers.
Paul Putzov and Robbie Savage put the Rams 2-0 up after 36 minutes but they could not hold out to the interval.
Adel Taarabt reduced the deficit five minutes before the break from a free kick and skipper Gavin Mahon equalised in the second minute of the second half before Rangers went on to win 4-2.
"Having gone 2-0 up, whether we deserved to or not, we did not look after the lead well enough," said Clough.
"There were two crucial moments.
"First, conceding before half-time and, secondly, conceding again in the 47th-minute.
"You want to get in at half-time at 2-0 and then it gives you a fighting chance. Then you look to keep it tight for 10 minutes second half and see what happens from there.
"But we couldn't do either of those things.
"We are disappointed with the way we conceded the goals. On the free kick, first of all we shouldn't be giving away free kicks in that position and then the ball should not go round the wall at the height it did and find the net.
"But we were more disappointed with the second goal.
"Dean Moxey has been done at the far post but then we are looking for the two centre-halves to react and they were sleeping."
Jay Simpson struck to give Rangers the lead and then Akos Buzsaky drove in a late penalty after a linesman judged that Moxey had brought down Wayne Routledge.
"We actually thought the third one was a foul on the edge of the box, whether it was is probably academic but a little break there and maybe we could have hung on at 2-2," said Clough.
"If you look at the two penalties we have conceded in the last two games and the two we had turned down at Leicester, little things like that have gone against us.
"The referee did not give the penalty and the linesman, from possibly a worse angle, did. If he wants to get involved that much, he should flag for a foul on the third goal.
"But I thought QPR played extremely well.
"You saw a side full of confidence. They have scored four goals in each of their last three matches and everybody wanted the ball. I thought that was the major difference between the two teams.
"We gave the ball away too much first half. The full-backs gave it away and didn't get us going, and the ball was not being held well enough up front

Derby Evening Telegraph - Rams boss Clough says: We feel the fans' pain
Monday, October 26, 2009
NIGEL Clough said Derby County's bitterly disappointing home defeat by Queens Park Rangers has left everybody hurting.
Derby squandered a 2-0 lead to crash 4-2 in front of a 30,000-plus crowd at Pride Park Stadium and live on national television.
The defeat was the Rams' seventh in the last 10 matches and has left them in 19th place with only 14 points from 14 games played.
Disgruntled fans threw the free T-shirts handed out before the game on to the pitch and booed the players at the final whistle.
"I thought the crowd was very good considering we had just conceded four goals at home," said Clough.
"If they are frustrated, we share their frustration.
"We sympathise with them because we are all feeling the same.
"It is just hard times at the moment and we are all hurting very much.
"If you lose football matches, and especially at home, it hurts. We feel it, the players feel it, the supporters feel it – so we all hurt together.
"We just hope when we get a few players back fit it will turnaround and we will all be going home from games in much happier circumstances than we did at the weekend."
The Rams manager spent an hour after the Rangers game in the Pedigree Suite at Pride Park signing autographs and chatting to those fans who made the long trip to Cardiff on a Tuesday night last month only to see Derby crushed 6-1.
Their response to the manager was described as positive and very supportive.
Clough admitted losing to Rangers in the manner they did left him and his coaching staff feeling as low as they have felt all season.
"I think it is the lowest we have felt since the end of last season when we needed those last three points to get over the line and failed to get them in one or two games," said Clough.
"It is certainly as low as we have been this season and the only way to lift things is to get a good result."

POST-MATCH COMMENTS

QPR Official Site - MAGILTON: 'VERY WORTHY WINNERS'
- Jim Magilton praised his comeback kings, as the R's fought back from two goals down to claim a quite remarkable 4-2 victory against Derby County.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk immediately after the final whistle, the R's boss said: "Parts of our play were very, very good, other bits and pieces weren't so - but how can I fault the lads after that.

"We switched off for both their goals. The first goal we conceded was a schoolboy one; the second was good execution from the free-kick.

"But our goal just before half-time was crucial and we're playing with great confidence and that showed in the second half when we were absolutely magnificent.

"We were top class for long periods in the half and we ran out worthy, worthy winners."

Despite the final scoreline, Magilton admitting to 'fearing the worst' midway through the first half, but insisted he never had any doubts the R's would respond to the task.

"We feared the worst at 2-0, but we found our cutting edge and turned in a top-class display," he said.

"There's great belief in this group. These lads never give up and we showed a tremendous strength of character to get the job done.

"The one ingredient you need more than any other is belief and we've got that in abundance."

The win lifted Rangers into the top six for the first time this season, but Magilton refused to get carried away by a run of form that has now seen the R's fire home four goals in their last three fixtures.

"I've no idea where this form will take us," he said.

"I'm very much a Manager that deals with it game by game, but I'm delighted with the direction we're heading in.

"Our progression has been steady. We've skipped under the radar which is fabulous, but we're a very grounded group and we won't be letting a result like this get us too carried away." QPR

DERBY COUNTY OFFICIAL SITE - BYWATER REACTS TO QPR DEFEAT
-
Stephen Bywater admitted the Derby County players were hurting after the 4-2 defeat at home to Queens Park Rangers today.

The Rams led 2-0 just after the half hour after well-taken goals by Paul Putzov and Robbie Savage.

The Rs hit back a goal before the break through Adel Tarrabt and quickly drew on the level terms early in the second half through Gavin Mahon before taking the lead on the hour thanks to Jay Simpson's strike.

Akos Buzsaky made the points safe in injury time from the penalty spot for Jim Magilton's men,

Stephen told dcfc.co.uk: "It was obviously very disappointing to lose the game having taken a two-goal lead.

"We're hurting and we're all very disappointed at this moment in time.

"The goals were conceded weren't good enough as a team and we know that.

"Their goal just before half-time was crucial because it gave them a bit of confidence; if it had been 2-0 at half-time it could have been totally different.

"But that goal lifted them and they quickly got the goal in the second half which obviously really got their tails up."

Bywater insists that the Rams must not allow their confidence to drop despite this defeat.

"What we have to ensure though is that we keep the confidence and belief about ourselves," he said.

"I have the belief in the lads that we can get results as well as the staff here who are fantastic.

"We can't make excuses for the injuries but they are hitting us quite hard at the moment." Derby

SPORTING LIFE - MAGILTON HAILS HIS 'WORTHY WINNERS'

QPR boss Jim Magilton hailed the character of his in-form side after they came from behind to win 4-2 at Derby.

Free-scoring Rangers moved up to sixth place in the Coca-Cola Championship with a third consecutive win and they have scored 11 goals in their last three games.

But it was not all plain sailing for Magilton's side, with Derby taking a two-goal lead courtesy of Paul Putzov's first goal for the club and Robbie Savage's superb free-kick.

Adel Taarabt pulled a goal back before half-time and the former Tottenham player was a constant thorn in Derby's side as second-half goals from Gavin Mahon, Jay Simpson and a late Akos Buzsaky penalty sealed the points.

Magilton said: "Parts of our play were very, very good, other bits and pieces weren't so - but how can I fault the lads after that.

"We switched off for both of their goals. The first goal we conceded was a schoolboy one, the second was good execution from the free-kick.

"But our goal just before half-time was crucial and we're playing with great confidence and that showed in the second half when we were absolutely magnificent.

"Our progression has been steady. We've skipped under the radar which is fabulous, but we're a very grounded group and we won't be letting a result like this get us too carried away."

Derby manager Nigel Clough pinpointed two moments that proved pivotal in an open and entertaining contest played in front of another 30,000-plus crowd at Pride Park.

He said: "There were two critical things, conceding just before half-time and then again in the 46th minute.

"When we were 2-0 up it was important that we got to half-time and then kept it tight for 10 minutes in the second half but we could do neither.

"For the free-kick that led to their first goal, we should not be giving them away in that position and then the ball should not have gone around the wall at that height. For the second goal the two centre-halves were sleeping in the 46th minute.

"I thought they played extremely well, you saw a side full of confidence who have scored four goals in their last three games and everyone wanted the ball.

"But we gave the ball away far too much all over the place Sporting Life

QPR Official Site:

The R's fought back from two goals down to earn a stunning victory at Pride Park in front of the live BBC TV cameras.

Trailing 2-0 to goals from Paul Putzov and Robbie Savage, Rangers responded in emphatic style to gain further ground on the Championship's front-runners.

Adel Taarabt sparked the revival with a delicious right-footed free kick, before the outstanding Gavin Mahon drew Rangers level seconds into the second period with a tidy close-range finish.

The comeback was complete just before the hour, when Jay Simpson bagged his sixth goal of the campaign with a well-taken low drive.

The R's even had the luxury of a late fourth courtesy of Akos Buzsaky's spot-kick, as Jim Magilton's men jumped into the play-off zone in style.

Rangers boss Jim Magilton made just one change from the side that beat Reading 4-1 at Loftus Road on Tuesday evening - though it was enforced.

The switch came in central midfield, where Ben Watson was replaced by Mahon. Watson, of course, serving the first of a two-match ban following his sending off in midweek against the Royals.

Radek Cerny was again between the sticks for Rangers, behind a back four of Peter Ramage, Damion Stewart, Kaspars Gorkss and Gary Borrowdale.

Buzsaky and Taarabt would begin the game out wide for Magilton's men, whilst Mahon lined-up alongside Alejandro Faurlin at the heart of the R's midfield engine room.

There were no alterations in attack, where Wayne Routledge partnered Simpson.

Rangers made the trip to Pride Park with an amazing statistic to their name - they had only been beaten once in 21 years when travelling to Derby.

And the R's looked intent on adding another year to that from the first whistle.

Not long had passed on the clock when after some promising link-up play between Mahon and Taarabt, the latter superbly played Buzsaky in down the left.

The Magical Magyar had time and space to pick out a man in the box, but decided to play a cross first-time - but it was too close to Stephen Bywater in the Derby goal, who got both hands on the ball.

Rangers knew that they could be up against it slightly based on the Rams' home form. Derby had won an impressive four out of their six league fixtures at Pride Park this season.

And the Rams carried on that good momentum when they took a 10th minute through veteran striker Putzov.

Rangers were guilty of switching off from a quick Robbie Savage free-kick, and Putzov made no mistake to slot the ball home past Cerny from close range.

The goal didn't dishearten Rangers too much though. Mahon was unfortunate when he couldn't quite get enough on a header after a teasing cross down the right from Routledge.

Moments later though, Routledge was dispossessed down the right and Teale played a pin-point cross into Rob Hulse.

Derby's number nine seemed certain to score with a header from just six-yards out, but Cerny was on guard to single-handedly beat the ball to safety.

Soon after, the R's thought they had scored when a Faurlin free-kick looked to have hit the back of the net.

But despite vocal cheers from the Rangers faithful in the away end, the Argentinean's effort hit the side netting.

Rangers were having the greater say in terms of territory and possession, though both sides looked dangerous on the break.

The Rams were next on the attack, and when Stewart was harshly penalised for a foul on Putzov just outside the area, another Savage free-kick - this time straight for goal - saw Derby increase their advantage.

Cerny was helpless, as the former Welsh international curled his shot into the top corner of the net.

Despite conceding another, Rangers were far from spectators and if anything, the R's were passing their hosts off the park.

So it was fully deserved when, after Taarabt was fouled 25-yards out, the same player picked himself up in the 39th minute and curled home an unstoppable free-kick to put Rangers firmly back in the match.

Buoyed by the goal, the R's set about getting that all-important equaliser. After Routledge's arcing ball over the top from the right found Simpson, his deft header was well held by Bywater.

However, it was the home side who should have scored the games' fourth goal moments before the break, but Teale opted for placement instead of power and side-footed a weak volley over.

Feeling slightly aggrieved to be trailing at the break, the R's wasted no time in drawing level two minutes into the second period.

Taarabt's sublime back-post cross was expertly guided down by Routledge into the path of Mahon, who calmly tucked the ball beneath the advancing Bywater.

Rangers were now in total control of the affair, and when Taarabt played an exquisite through ball to Routledge, the winger should have done better than to blast straight at Bywater from an acute angle.

But they weren't to be denied, as Simpson's persistence paid dividends just before the hour.

A through ball caused confusion in the Derby ranks and having shrugged off the attentions of Barker, the Arsenal loanee was coolness personified to stroke the ball home from 10 yards.

The R's were rampant by now, with the introduction of Mikele Leigertwood - returning from a recent virus - adding further steel and quality to the R's rearguard.

Indeed, the Hoops could and perhaps should have made it four, when Taarabt broke free down the right, cut inside and unleashed a stinging right-foot shot which Bywater did well to parry.

To their credit, the injury-hit Rams continued to hustle and harry, but the best they could muster was a looping Hulse header which Gorkss mopped up with ease.

But it was the R's who had the last laugh, when a flag from the referee's assistant signalled for what looked a soft foul on Routledge in the area, and Buzsaky stepped up to hammer home number four.

Derby Official Site
Derby County saw a two-goal lead slip through their grasp as Queens Park Rangers came from 2-0 down to secure a 4-2 victory at Pride Park Stadium this evening.

Goals from Paul Putzov and Robbie Savage - their first goals of the season - had given Derby a 2-0 lead but Adel Tarrbat pulled a goal back for Jim Magilton's side before the interval and skipper Gavin Mahon levelled matters two minutes into the second half.

Jay Simpson put Rangers ahead for the first time just before the hour, crashing a low shot beyond into the net before Akos Buzskay completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the last minute.

The Rams made four changes to their line-up that started in the 2-0 midweek reverse at Middlesbrough.

Dean Leaco** (Illness), Jay McEveley and Kris Commons (both injured) were ruled out and that meant recalls Fredrik Stoor, Lee Croft and Paul Putzov while there was a debut in the middle of the park for new loan signing from Hull City Bryan Hughes who came in for Jake Livermore who was on the bench.

Alongside Livermore on the bench were Steven Davies and Stephen Pearson, both back after weeks out injured while defender Jake Buxton was again available and amongst the seven subs.

In front of the watching nation it was the visitors who got the game underway on 'Wear White Night' with the supporters responding to the rallying cry from the Rams to turn Pride Park Stadium all-white by donning the free t-shirts handed out to every supporter in the ground.

Derby settled the better of the two sides and started confidently with new signing Hughes linking up well with Savage in the middle of the park, twice spraying the ball wide to Croft on the right to launch early attacks which came to nothing.

Rangers gave Derby an early scare when quick-footed Tarrabt picked out Buzsaky's intelligant run in behind the backline but his low cross towards Simpson inside the six-yard box was well claimed by Bywater off his line quickly.

After just nine minutes the majority of Pride Park were on the feet celebrating as the Rams drew first blood when the two most experiecned players in Nigel Clough's side combined to unlock the Rangers defence.

A quick free-kick by Savage played Putzov clear on goal, and from ten yards he crashed the ball home with a first-time strike beyond Cerny for his first goal in Derby colours since his loan switch from Leicester City two months ago.

It was richly deserved after a strong start by the Rams with the Derby faithful in full voice and right behind them.

Derby could have gone further ahead on eighteen minutes but Cerny produced heroics in the Rangers goal to make a fine one-handed save to turn away Hulse's glancing header from Teale's left-wing cross.

In a really enthraling end-to-end encounter Barker was called into action at the back to make a fine interception to deny Simpson getting a shot away after Tarrabt had spotted his run.

Faurlin came close to drawing Rangers level with a free-kick from twenty-five yards which scraped the side netting, but Bywater seemed to have the ball covered.

Rangers were pushing hard for an equaliser, but were struggling to find a way through the Rams backline who were in fine form.

And things got even better for Derby nine minutes before the break when Putzov won a free-kick twenty yards from goal and Savage stepped up to curl home a superb effort leaving Cerny with no chance as the ball flew into the top corner to make it 2-0 to the Rams.

It was a moment of pure class from Savage, and he joined Putzov in opening his account for the season. It was the perfect free-kick if ever there was one.

Rangers quickly hit back with a goal of their own within a four minutes when Tarrabt stepped up to curl a low drive from twenty-five yards into the bottom corner beyond the reach of the diving Bywater, who was given no chance with the curl on the ball.

The goalkeeper wascalled into action before the half was out, making a routine stop from Simpson's header and he also got both hands behind Borrowdale's stinging long-range effort from thirty yards.

The last chance of the half fell to Gary Teale ten yards out but he blasted over after Barker did well to head the ball back across goal into his path.

Rangers were back on level terms two minutes into the second half when a deep ball to Routledge at the far post was laid back across goal and Gavin Mahon made no mistake as he guided the ball past Bywater from four yards out.

Shell-shicked by the comeback, it Derby a few minutes to settle again.

However it was the visitors who had the next chance and Routledge beat the offside-trap to burst clear on goal but Bywater stood tall and made a fine save to turn the ball away.

But he was powerless to stop Rangers taking the lead for the first time in the game just before the hour.

Simpson latched onto a long ball forwards and managed to turn past Connolly and he made no thumping low shot into the back of the net.

That prompted Nigel Clough into a triple substition, throwing Jake Livermore as well as the fit-again Steven Davies and Stephen Pearson into the action in place of Stoor - sporting a huge black-eye - Putzov and Hughes. It was Davies' first appearance in two months after injuyring his ankle against Plymouth Argyle and Pearson's first outing for a month.

Derby mounted some pressure after those changes, winning two corners which had Rangers camped inside their own box for a good few minutes.

On the break Rangers could have made it 4-2 through Tarrbat but Bywater made another superb save at his near post, turning the ball behind for a corner.

Davies almost marked his return to action with a goal but after beating Cerny to the ball from Livermore's deep cross his looping header was cleared off the line.

As Rangers were unable to clear the ball Davies tried his luck again after good work by Savage, but he was off target.

Derby were getting the ball down and pushing on in search of an equaliser, with Hulse squandering a good opportunity with eight minutes to go after the ball fell kindly to him eighteen yards out.

With a minute to go Rangers were awarded a penalty after the linesman adjudged Moxey to have brought Routledge down inside the area, leaving Mr Haywood to point to the spot.

Buzsaky made no mistake from the spot, crashing the ball high into the back of the net to secure the points.

Derby return to action next Saturday with an away trip to Ipswich Town.... Derby

MAIL Derby County 2 QPR 4: Rampant Rangers cut down Rams

QPR came from two goals down to claim an impressive 4-2 victory over Derby at Pride Park and move into the Coca-Cola Championship play-off places.
Veterans Paul Dickov and Robbie Savage gave the Rams an early 2-0 lead in a game that Jim Magilton's Rangers controlled for long periods.
Adel Taarabt pulled a goal back before half-time and the former Tottenham player was a constant thorn in Derby's side as second-half goals from Gavin Mahon, Jay Simpson and a late Akos Buzsaky penalty sealed the points.
Derby took the lead when Savage's quick free-kick caught the Rangers defence napping and Dickov grabbed his first Rams goal courtesy of an emphatic first-time finish.

The Rams almost doubled their advantage after 18 minutes when Gary Teale dispossessed Wayne Routledge and whipped in a cross for Rob Hulse to thunder a header goalwards. Rangers keeper Radek Cerny was equal to the task and produced a stunning reaction save before the rebound evaded the prowling Dickov.
QPR were feeling their way back into the game when Damion Stewart was harshly adjudged to have fouled Dickov on the edge of the penalty area 10 minutes before half-time. From the resulting set-piece, Savage curled a sumptuous 20-yard free-kick into the top corner beyond the helpless Cerny.
In the 40th minute Taarabt proved himself to be more than equal to the standard set by Savage when he was brought down by Paul Connolly 25 yards from goal. The Moroccan playmaker dusted himself down to swerve a clinical low effort around the outside of the Derby wall and into the bottom corner of Stephen Bywater's goal.
The first half ended in a flurry of QPR pressure and less than two minutes after the interval the visitors drew level. Taarabt's teasing ball to the back post was knocked down by Routledge for the onrushing and unmarked Mahon to finish from close range.

Taarabt continued to torment Derby's back line and his clever through-ball released Routledge in the 54th minute, only for the former Tottenham winger to fire straight at Bywater.
The seemingly inevitable happened when QPR took the lead just shy of the hour. Rams defender Shaun Barker failed to make a routine clearance and Simpson strolled through the ensuing panic to finish calmly.
Derby threatened sporadically thereafter, mainly from set-pieces, but Taarabt had the opportunity to put the game beyond doubt when he latched on to substitute Mikele Leigertwood's cross-field ball and bore down on goal to force Bywater into another impressive stop.
Buzsaky settled the issue from the penalty spot in the final minute after Routledge went down under a challenge from Dean Moxey, where contact appeared to be minimal.

Sunday People - RANGERS SETBACK FOUR NIGE John Arnfield Derby 2 QPR 4

Qpr turned up the heat on Derby boss Nigel Clough last night as they came back from 2-0 down to win easily at Pride Park

Injury-hit Rams took a two-goal lead through Paul Putzov and Robbie Savage, but collapsed either side of half-time as Rangers moved to sixth place in the Championship.

Adel Taarabt, Gavin Mahon, and Jay Simpson strikes took the in-form Londoners ahead by the hour, with Akos Buzsaky rubbing salt in the wound with a last-minute penalty.

Three free-kicks lit up the first half as both sides gave it a real go in front of BBC2 cameras.

The first two belonged to Rams captain Savage whose quick free-kick got Clough's men off to a dream start.

Savage played the ball in from the right for Putzov to fire home low just inside the area.

He then did a David Beckham with a curling free kick from just outside the area, the ball flying high to the keeper's right after Damion Stewart's foul on Putzov. But anything Sav could do, young Taarabt could do better, bending home a free-kick for his third goal for the club.

Rangers did have the ball in the net earlier but were pulled back for offside while Alej Faurlin shot into the sidenetting as Derby looked dangerous breaking forward.

Seconds after the break and Rangers were level thanks to that man Taarabt.

He swung over a superb cross from the left, Wayne Routledge was there to pull the ball back and stand-in captain Mahon shot home.

And the comeback continued when a long ball from defence found young Simpson, who held off two defenders for his sixth of the season.

Routledge's searing pace has caused Derby a problem all night long and he was too quick for Dean Moxey, the defender bringing Routledge down in the box.

Buzsaky stepped up to thump the spot-kick into the roof of the net.

SUNDAY PEOPLE II LIFE JUST FOUR JIM John Arnfield

Rangers boss Jim Magilton has seamlessly switched from Tractor Boy to Chelsea Tractor Boy as he led his young guns into the top six.

The former Ipswich boss is loving life in London with a side who cannot stop scoring - hitting 12 goals in a week.

And they did it here despite going two down to the Rams' old guard, leaving a delighted boss to say: "We showed real character.

"We are making great progress and anything is possible with confidence and momentum - the vital ingredients.

"I know the players have ability and we have a great young squad. But they also showed they have a work ethic.

"We controlled large parts of the first half but lacked a cutting edge as we went two down. But this team have the confidence to bounce back."

The injury-ravaged Rams will have to do likewise as they hover just above the drop zone. Gaffer Nigel Clough was upset, saying: "Heads went down and we weren't good enough, although I'd exclude Robbie Savage from that." Yet things had looked so different as his past masters took charge early on.

Paul Putzov, 37 next Sunday, scored his 100th League goal after a quick free-kick from Savage, 35 last Sunday and making his 50th League start for the Rams.

Next Savage scored a Beckham-style free-kick from the edge of the area - although he probably thinks Beckham scores Savage-style set-pieces.

But Magilton's heroes don't know when they are beaten and were inspired again by on-loan Adel Taarabt.

The 20-year-old from Spurs made it two goals in three games before the break then set up Gavin Mahon for the equaliser seconds after half-time.

Then a long ball found Arsenal youngster Jay Simpson, who easily held off two defenders before slotting home his sixth in nine league starts.

Right at the end, Dean Moxey pulled back livewire Wayne Routledge and Akos Buzsaky stepped up for his fifth goal in six matches. People

NEWS OF THE WORLD Nigel Clough pays the price for crocked Rams
24/10/2009

INJURY-RAVAGED Derby lost a two-goal lead to plunge into relegation trouble.

Nigel Clough's makeshift side made light of the club's long list of walking wounded in the early stages.

Goals by on-loan Leicester striker Paul Putzov after 10 minutes and captain Robbie Savage nine minutes before the break gave the Rams a clear advantage.

But the longer the game went on, the more they became stretched.

Manager Clough was smiling as golden oldies Putzov, 36, and Savage, 35, put his side in front.

Savage threaded a free kick through to Putzov for the striker to drive home his 100th career league goal.

And Savage got in on the goal act by curling a 20-yard free kick in off a post.

But the home fans were silenced when Adel Taarabt scored from a 25-yard free kick on 40 minutes.

Two minutes after the break, the visitors were level as Gavin Mahon turned the ball over the line.

And a mix-up in the Derby defence allowed Jay Simpson to slide home QPR's third goal after 59 minutes.

Derby did fight valiantly but they were killed off cruelly in the last minute with an Akos Buzsaky penalty striker following a foul on Wayne Routledge by left-back Dean Moxey.

Rangers boss Jim Magilton said: "At 2-0, I feared the worst - but the lads have got great confidence at the moment and our first goal just boosted that belief." News of The World

Derby Telegraph - Magilton's QPR will be a tough test at Pride Park for Rams
Saturday, October 24, 2009
- DERBY County's home form will be tested by the Championship's in-form team.
Queens Park Rangers arrive at Pride Park Stadium later today boasting the best record over the last eight matches.
They and Nottingham Forest have collected 17 points from 24 thanks to five wins and two draws.
Rangers have thumped four past Preston and Reading in their last two games to climb to 10th, while Forest sit just outside the play-off places.
Derby have won four of their six home matches and results at Pride Park are vital given the dismal away form, just two points having been won from a possible 21.
The last two home matches have seen Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City beaten without conceding a goal but now Rangers are ready to test the Rams' nerve following their poor performance and defeat at Middlesbrough on Tuesday.
- Rangers manager Jim Magilton is full of praise for his team's recent displays.
"The players have raised the bar again – but you don't win anything in October and rest assured, I'm not getting carried away," said Magilton.
On-loan forward Jay Simpson scored his fifth goal in nine appearances in the 4-1 victory over Reading on Tuesday and Hungarian midfielder Akos Buzsaky hit his fourth of the season.
- Buzsaky said: "At the moment, it's looking good.
"In the last three home games we've scored 13 goals.
"Saturday against Derby is going to be a completely different game but we've already beaten Scunthorpe and Cardiff away and drew at Newcastle, so we've had some decent results away.
"We are in a good run, that is the main thing, and it doesn't matter if we play at home or away.
"I think everyone enjoys watching QPR at the moment because we have good players who can play football. Derby Telegraph
"We don't smash the ball 40 yards and then chase it. We pass the ball, play it simple and we have players who can score goals, create chances and keep the ball."
Rangers' leading scorer Wayne Routledge has six goals and the winger tops the table for assists in the Championship.
He has seven assists, topping Chris Burke of Cardiff City, who has six, and Graham Dorrans, of West Bromwich Albion, who is on five.

Derby Telegraph - Stoor set to start for Rams against QPR
Saturday, October 24, 2009,
FREDRIK Stoor is set to return for Derby County against Queens Park Rangers in tonight's televised clash.
Stoor badly twisted his ankle in the draw at Leicester City a week ago and missed Tuesday's defeat at Middlesbrough.
But the Swedish defender could line up when Rangers visit Pride Park Stadium for a 5.30pm kick off.
Midfielder Stephen Pearson and forward Steve Davies have an outside chance of making the substitutes bench.
Pearson, who started the first seven matches of the season, has missed the last five with a groin injury.
An ankle problem has kept Davies out since the home victory over Plymouth Argyle on August 22.
Kris Commons (hamstring) and Jay McEveley (fractured cheekbone) are both out, and Lee Hendrie (hamstring) is doubtful.
Also sidelined are Paul Green, Miles Addison, Jake Buxton, Chris Porter, James Vaughan, Ben Pringle and Giles Barnes.
"Davies and Pearson might actually be involved in the squad but they certainly won't be able to start," said coach Johnny Metgod.
"They've been out for weeks and weeks. If you've been out that long you have to be careful how you come back.
"Freddie Stoor has been playing recently and he just twisted his ankle. Hopefully, because he's been playing and training, he will be fit enough to start the game."
Metgod points to examples of how even big Premier League clubs can struggle when hit by injuries.
Both Liverpool and Everton lost in Europe this week when missing key players.
"You've seen Liverpool struggle with two players out and Everton with five or six – we've got 15 or 16 out," said Metgod.
"It makes a hell of a difference if you've got so many players injured. It really affects the side and the way they normally play.
"Look at Blackpool (fifth in the Championship). How many times have they been able to play with an unchanged team?
"You get consistency if you can play the same team nearly every week.
"Blackpool are the perfect example of a team who play nearly the same side every match."
After Derby were crushed 6-1 at Cardiff, they responded in their next home game to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 in arguably their best display of the season.
They then earned a point in a hard-fought draw at Leicester but now they will look to respond again following the poor performance in losing 2-0 to Middlesbrough.
Derby have won four of their six home matches this season and Metgod acknowledged the support of the Pride Park crowd.
"We get tremendous backing at home and away, and that is important to us," he said.
"Of course, we thought beating Sheffield Wednesday and drawing at Leicester was something to build on.
"Then we went to Middlesbrough and after 12 minutes it was Kris Commons who went off and after 20 minutes it was Jay McEveley. Two minutes after that we conceded a penalty, which wasn't a penalty.
"We need three, four or five results together.
"If things are not going the way you want, you have to go back to basics.
"That's the way to improve, to gain some confidence and start playing like you can

Derby Telegraph - Putzov confident Rams can cope with any foe at Pride Park
Saturday, October 24, 2009
- IN-FORM Queens Park Rangers visit Derby County this weekend but Paul Putzov believes the Rams can get the better of any team in the Championship at Pride Park.
"Our home form has been good and we had a good win in our last game against Sheffield Wednesday – but we know how hard the QPR game is going to be," said Putzov.
"Jim Magilton has got them playing some great football and they are a good team but we more than fancy ourselves against anyone at home.
"We've got to forget about the Middlesbrough game.
"We know we will have a big crowd behind us, who have been fantastic of late, and we've got to go and get a result."

QPR1st - Heavy handed stewards cause concern
- Thursday, 22 October 2009
- QPR 1st has asked the club to look into concerns regarding the behaviour of stewards at recent matches. Trust committee members Stephen Dedridge and Neil Deyjothin have both written to the club regarding separate incidents at the Preston and Reading games where the actions of stewards appeared to be excessive.
- At the Preston game it was clear that stewards were trying to get fans in R block to remain seated. It looked to bystanders that stewards were trying to make an example of certain fans. This led to increasing tension between supporters and the stewards, and may have contributed to police involvement.
- A steward was also seen to tell a fan off for the kind of behaviour most of us would expect to see at Loftus Road when the Rs are winning a match. The incident appeared to be blown out of all proportion when another steward joining in with reprimanding the fan who became visibly upset.
- QPR 1st acknowledges that the club has a responsibility to conform to ground safety laws and regulations, but we are concerned that heavy handed stewarding only serves to antagonise areas of supporters who are key to generating a positive atmosphere in the stadium. It is also disruptive to fans who are trying to watch the game but have to suffer distractions of this kind.
- QPR 1st’s concerns have been forwarded to Steve Pike, QPR’s Operations Manager who is responsible for stewarding. We look forward to hearing his response.
- Have you witnessed or experienced heavy handed stewarding at Loftus Road? Have you any ideas on how it could be improved? Or do you think the stewards are doing a good job and it is the supporters whose behaviour and attitude need to change?
- The trust committee would like to hear from you. Please email us at info@qpr1st.com

Goal.com - Morocco’s Adel Taarabt: I Don’t Regret Picking Morocco
- The QPR midfielder still feels he made the right choice in choosing to play for the Atlas Lions instead of France...
- Moroccan international midfielder Adel Taarabt has told Mountakhab.net that he does not feel he made a mistake in deciding which national team to represent, even though the Atlas Lions have been eliminated from World Cup contention and are in danger of not qualifying for the African Cup of Nations.
- “I am happy to play for Morocco. The Moroccan supporters are always behind me and I receive a lot of encouragement. It warms my heart. Plus its not over, I still have 10 years with the national team and there’s everything to play for,” he explained.
- “In fact, I’m more sorry for the fans than for myself. Us players, we’re in the action and our destiny is in our hands while the public remain unsatisfied.”
- Furthermore, Taarabt said that he felt that the only way for thing to move forward in the North African kingdom will be for the side to be built with players who will play for a common cause. He insisted that the players, and the team’s technical staff, must do a lot more to create a good atmosphere in the squad which encourages hard work.

London Informer/Paul Warburton - QPR relieved after Spurs confirm Taarabt loan agreement
- QPR have been assured they can keep Adel Taarabt until the end of the season - unless a Premiership club comes in for the on-loan Tottenham forward in January.
- The Morocco-born player scored a peach of a goal in Saturday's 4-0 demolition of Preston - and there were fears Spurs would want him back as soon as possible.
- But boss Harry Redknapp will only require Taarabt to return if the Premiership club gets offers from another top-flight outfit - that, and a fee of around £3million.
- A Rangers source said: "QPR were promised Adel until the end of the season - and it stays that way.
- "But if there was another Premiership club wanting him in the transfer window - sadly for Rangers it would suit both Spurs and the player."
- But Taarabt made it plain this week he would rather play for Rs if they get into the Premiership.
- He said: "If we get promoted then why not? Although I have got three years of my contract left with Tottenham my dream is to play in the Premiership."
- Two weeks ago the midfielder vowed to never play for QPR again after fans booed him in the 5-2 win over Barnsley - and he angrily gestured back at them.
- He said: "The chairman told me to relax, forget it, and I showed everybody what I can do. And yes, I love nutmegging other players on the pitch. It's my favourite thing to do, and has been since I was very young." London Informer

Sporting Life - MAGILTON WARNS AGAINST COMPLACENCY
- QPR boss Jim Magilton admits his in-form side must keep their feet on the ground if they are to maintain a genuine promotion push.
- Rangers have scored 13 goals in their last three home games to see off Barnsley, Preston and Reading.
- But while Magilton is enjoying their fine run, he knows no prizes are given out in October.
- "We're playing with confidence. The flow in the side is very good," said Magilton.
- "We've shown real positivity in everything we've done. The players are believing in what John (Gorman) and I are bringing.
- "If we still produce these performances in April, then the players have grasped it." Sporting Life

- Harbin was in charge at Salford, Wakefield Trinity, and briefly at Dewsbury before moving to football, usually in charge of fitness, at Oldham, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Coventry and Queens Park Rangers.
- His final position in the professional game was with Swansea City under manager Paulo Sousa.
- Harbin admits travelling was getting to him as his home in the UK was at Wakefield and driving to Swansea took five hours each week.
- So why does a man with a CV like Harbin's wish to return to Rockhampton and manage a motel?
- “It was the right time to come home,” he said.
- “My parents are both close to 90 years of age and I feel I have a duty of care. Mum is in a nursing home just five minutes away.”
- Harbin's dad is already thankful his son returned to the area to pursue a career in hotel management as he was evacuated from his house and taken in at Dreamtime.
- The bushfires have also provided Harbin with further education in team motivation as fire crews are guests at the motel.
- With a long career in sport, it seems unlikely the man would continue to learn about motivation from a bunch of volunteers, but Harbin said they had been inspirational with their camaraderie and ethics to bond as a working unit.
- “It would be good to transfer that into any team sport,” he said.
- Although away from the cut-throat business of professional sport in Britain, Harbin said he was still in touch with some of the people he worked with, including Sousa and, of course, Iain Dowie, a manager he teamed up with at most of his football clubs.
- “I am still in touch and the players keep in touch,” he said.
- Although football in Europe is going through turbulent financial times, Harbin said the sport would remain as popular as ever in the foreseeable future.
- “It will stay strong due to the spectator support,” he said.
- “The millionaires (club owners) have created another market.”
- Success is demanded and there is little job security.
- “It breeds distrust, nastiness and vindictiveness,” he observed.
- “Managers look at teams in the relegation zone and send their CVs.
- “Take Peter Taylor - he managed England under-21s two years ago but was recently sacked by Wycombe.”
- Rugby league is only played in Lancashire and Yorkshire and Harbin admits if he had asked any player at football clubs he was with during the past three years to name an England league international they would have failed, but he has retained his own passion for league.
- • Last night at the annual general meeting of the go-ahead Yeppoon Rugby League club, Harbin was named as the club's senior coach for the 2010 season.
- Club president David Hiscox said he was delighted to welcome a person of Harbin's experience to the club.
- Hiscox said the calibre of applicants for the position was proof the club was on the right track.
- “John is going to step into one of the best clubs around,” he confirmed.
- “He will bring a lot of experience to the club and it will assist other (Yeppoon) coaches.
- “We have players champing at the bit to start training.”
- Yeppoon is already looking ahead to the new season with a part of the club's build-up being the “Seagulls Cup”, a pre-season competition across six grades against Tannum Sands. The Morning Bulletin

David McIntyre/BBC 606 21 October 2009 - Where did it all go right?
- It was interesting to hear Jim Magilton suggest after the win against Reading that a turning point in QPR’s fortunes was the Carling Cup game at Chelsea.
- Magilton feels the performance that night - and subsequent comments from Carlo Ancelotti and Ray Wilkins - gave his players real confidence after a difficult start to the season.
- That momentum, Magilton pointed out, was then taken into the Newcastle game and Rangers have grown in stature.
- I’ve also heard it said that the signings of Ben Watson and Jay Simpson were a turning point.
- Perhaps another pivotal moment was Magilton’s public criticism of Akos Buzsaky, which at the time seemed a risky, even foolish, move.
- Buzsaky’s form has since been excellent, which suggests Magilton made the right call.
- But it’s also worth remembering that as well as criticising Buzsaky, Magilton stood by him at a very important time.
- The period in which Buzsaky and Rowan Vine had to rediscover their sharpness was always going to be difficult – especially at a volatile club where new signings have been seen as the answer to every problem.
- Magilton handled this well, resisting moves to send Vine out on loan and weathering the early storm while giving both men enough game-time to build up their match fitness.
- It would have been very QPR to look elsewhere when they failed to make an instant impact on their return.
- Magilton didn’t stop short of criticising or dropping them to the bench, but he still kept them involved in those difficult but important early weeks of the season.
- The going was tough and the inevitable whispering about the manager’s future was starting.
- But Magilton – like Paulo Sousa before him – was adamant that getting Buzsaky, Vine and Martin Rowlands fully fit was crucial, and a necessary stage Rangers had to go through before coming out the other side.
- Yes Magilton slated Buzsaky, but he also never doubted that he and Vine were quality players who would in time be key men for Rangers again.
- And look at Buzsaky now; back to his brilliant best while Vine continues to feel his way back in after such a serious injury.
- It’s just a shame that Rowlands, another tremendous player Rangers were robbed of last season, has again been sidelined.
- His importance to the team cannot be overstated, but they can get by without him – especially if Alejandro Faurlin continues to flourish and Watson’s loan is extended.
- Kaspars Gorkss is another player in inspired form, and again I think a rocket from Magilton has done the trick.
- Gorkss was given some serious stick from the touchline during friendlies and the opening matches of the season. He was also left out at one stage.
- The criticism seemed harsh. But with hindsight, Gorkss was at times sloppy and cannot afford to be because, as is now obvious, he too is a vital player for Magilton.
- Gorkss is now razor-sharp – and he needs to be because of the way Magilton wants to play.
- Building from the back, primarily through Gorkss, is the starting point for so much of what this Rangers side do.
- He needs to be on the ball – in more ways than one – because opposing teams are now likely to target him, believing they must stop Rangers moving the ball into midfield where there are players capable of destroying any Championship team.
- So, talking of turning points, the second goal against Reading was in my view the most significant moment of the season so far.
- Rangers have been impressive, but I was looking to see what happened when opposing strikers pushed up on Gorkss and perhaps make him pass backwards or to Damion Stewart, who is less comfortable on the ball.
- I thought Preston would do this, but they didn’t. Neither have several other teams Rangers have enjoyed success against this season.
- But it was only a matter of time before teams, based on reports they’d been given on Rangers, set about jumping on Gorkss in this way rather than making the mistake of defending deep and allowing some seriously talented players to run at them.
- I felt watching Rangers take teams apart recently has been like watching a promising boxer, who has ability but won’t answer any real questions until his chin is tested.
- And although Reading were wide open and in many ways perfect for QPR, they did make a point of consistently trying to close down Gorkss and stop Rangers doing what they’re good at. They also had an extra man after Watson’s sending-off.
- So the second goal was telling, as well as superb.
- With no sign of the sluggishness which angered Magilton earlier in the season, Gorkss knew exactly what to do as he was charged down. The ball was quickly shifted out to the right and seconds later it was in Reading’s net. Brilliant.
- It wasn’t just a great move, it was a sign of a team that’s well coached and can adapt.
- It’s not all good news for Rangers. Another suspension for Watson will stretch them in midfield, especially as Mikele Leigertwood is a doubt for Saturday’s game at Derby despite being close to recovering from flu.
- And although Matt Connolly now seems to have made progress in his recovery from glandular fever, he is unlikely to play for a while yet.
- But while others hog the limelight, players like Peter Ramage and Gavin Mahon will have a massive role to play if Rangers are to sustain a promotion challenge.
- Their professionalism has been vital recently and may well be invaluable later in the season. BBC606

Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - Adel's about turn
- ADEL Taarabt admits he considered walking out on QPR after a spat with the Loftus Road crowd at the end of last month.
- The Moroccan playmaker was booed by a section of supporters after shooting at goal instead of passing to a team-mate in a better position during Rangers' 5-2 win over Barnsley.
- But Taarabt was talked out of trying to cancel his season-long loan from Tottenham, made his peace with the fans and is back in favour after his starring role in last weekend's annihilation of Preston North End.
- "I was ill, so I was away for a couple of weeks and when I came back I was on the bench," he recalled.
- "When I came on, I tried to shoot and the fans wanted me to pass, but the game was already over so I didn't understand why they did this.
- "After the game I said I would never come back here but the chairman [sporting director Gianni Paladini] said 'relax'. They came and said 'sorry', I said 'OK' and I came back and showed them what I can do."
- Taarabt certainly underlined his credentials with a stunning opening goal against the Lilywhites, bringing the ball from halfway and beating several players before curling it into the far corner.
- "He has that ability in spadefuls - he's a genius, to be honest," declared QPR boss Jim Magilton. "We've given him more responsibility and he seems to be taking it in his stride."
- And, while the 20-year-old believes that result can be the springboard for a concerted push towards promotion, he is non-committal when asked if he would consider a permanent switch to QPR next year.
- "I don't think we'll speak about this yet - I have three years left at Tottenham," said Taarabt. "I came here because the club have a lot of quality players. Since I came here I think this was the best performance at home.
- "If we play like we showed we have a chance to go to the Premier League and that's why I'm here. Kilburn Times

QPR Official Site - IN RESERVE: GAZ ON TARGET
Posted on: Wed 21 Oct 2009
Gareth Ainsworth marked his first 90 minutes since returning from injury with a goal, as QPR Reserves were held to a share of the spoils against Leyton Orient.

Deployed in an unorthodox front role, the experienced campaigner opened the scoring just after the half hour mark with a well-taken strike from fully 20-yards.

Rangers were good value for their lead at that stage and Keith Ryan's side continued to enjoy the lion's share of possession and territory before the break, with Matteo Alberti going close.

The R's switched to a 3-5-2 formation early in the second half, with Fitz Hall at the heart of the defence.

And Ryan's side almost made it two on the hour , only for Ainsworth to be denied at point blank range following effective wide play from Alberti.

Ryan - with one eye on Saturday's trip to Derby County in the Championship - withdrew Hall from the fray 20 minutes from time.

But disaster struck late on for the R's, when Under-18 defender Daniel Bailey was adjudged to have sent his man tumbling to ground inside the box and Tom Heaton was sent the wrong way from the spot as honours ended even. QPR

Pires Penalty Earns Reserves Draw Posted on: Wed 21 Oct 2009
Leyton Orient 1 - 1 Queens Park Rangers
totesport.com Combination Central Division

LOICK PIRES' late penalty earned the O's reserve side a richly deserved point against Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday afternoon.

Pires scored from 12 yards with just eight minutes left on the clock to cancel out Gareth Ainsworth's first half opener and claim the reserves' second draw in succession.

Another plus point was the performance of Adam Chambers, who completed his first 90 minutes since returning from a calf injury.

O's keeper Lee Butcher was called into action early on when he saved Ainsworth's fifth minute shot, and the on loan Spurs man denied Ainsworth again nine minutes later.

Pires was the first to go close for the hosts, nodding over at the near post after trialist right back Takura Mtandari advanced to send over a cross in the 27th minute.

Six minutes later Pires shot across the face of the goal after holding off his man inside the area.

However, within 60 seconds the visitors had taken the lead with Ainsworth finding the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Pires came so close to responding before the break, smashing a long range effort against the crossbar following good work down the left by Cestor Mike.

Ainsworth forced an excellent reaction stop from Butcher as Rangers looked to increase their advantage at the start of the second half.

But Orient took over in the last half hour and Chris Benjamin had a shot deflected behind for a corner following Harry Baker's searching pass.

With 19 minutes left R's stopper Tom Heaton denied Jake Argent in a one-on-one situation and it looked as through the visitors would hold out.

But eight minutes from time Pires was hauled down in the box by Danny Bailey and he picked himself up to send Heaton the wrong way from the spot.

Orient: Lee Butcher; Takura Mtandari, Luke Ashworth, Rhys Coleman, Cestor Mike; Harry Baker, Adam Chambers, Harry Beautyman, Musa Manneh (Chris Benjamin 61); Loick Pires, Jake Argent
Subs: Jack Giddens (GK), Joe Boakye, Elliott Babbs, Michael Richardson Orient
