Football League - WARNOCK PREDICTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Posted on: 17.06.2010

Neil Warnock is refusing to single out the leading contenders for the new npower Championship season believing instead that top spot in the impending campaign is wide open for any team that wants it.

Speaking at the launch of the 2010/11 npower Football League season this morning, the Queens Park Rangers Manager was giving his reaction to the fixtures release for the new npower Championship, npower League 1 and npower League 2.

And having digested the R's opening home tie to Barnsley followed by a return to his former club Sheffield United, in their first away game, Warnock admitted that the sides relegated and promoted to the npower Championship last term will leave the door open for several to battle it out for the title:

"I think it's the best league in the world, the Championship," he said. "I know you get all of the big teams in the Premier League, but everybody can forecast that - whereas in the Championship, you can't.

"I don't think you can point a finger this season, it's so wide open. Coming down, you'd probably think Burnley of three teams were contenders, but Hull and Portsmouth have great squads.

"Coming up, Leeds are really having a go, I know how ambitious they're going to be.

"Cardiff will recover from last year and be one of the forerunners, Swansea had a great season and Barnsley are spending money.
"I think it's just a fabulous, open Championship."

This season marks the first of a three-year deal between The Football League and npower which sees the energy company become the title sponsor for The League.

And in addition to Warnock - and new signing Paddy Kenny's - return to Bramall Lane just a fortnight into the new campaign, the fixture computer has produced some tantalising ties for the opening weeks of the season which you can check out by clicking here.

QPR Official Site - WARNOCK'S HOME COMFORT
- Neil Warnock admitted to being 'pleased' that the R's will kick-start their 2010/11 npower Championship campaign with a home fixture against Barnsley on August 7th.
- Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, the R's gaffer said: "It's always nice to start the campaign with a home match, so we've got to be fairly happy with that.
- "I don't think there will be too much difference between any of the sides in this division next season, so it didn't really matter who we got.
- "I'm pleased we're at home though - the Barnsley match followed by the Port Vale Carling Cup tie at Loftus Road a few days later will give some of the new lads a little bit more time to adjust to their new surroundings.
- "All in all, we've got to be quite happy."

Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - Lions consider Cook move
- MILLWALL have confirmed their interest in Lee Cook should the QPR winger be made available for transfer.
- Cook has struggled to recapture full match fitness since he was sidelined by a botched knee operation last year and could lose his place in the Rs side once Darren Ambrose completes his move from Crystal Palace.
- Lions boss Kenny Jackett, who worked with Cook during his time as Ian Holloway's number two at Loftus Road, is an admirer of the winger and is looking for proven Championship players to strengthen his newly-promoted squad.
- Jackett's assistant Joe Gallen, the former QPR youth team boss, told the Times: "Because of the number of managers they've had, there's been a high turnover of players.
- "We keep a close eye on QPR because we know there are a few who may not fit into Neil Warnock's plans.
- "There may be someone we can sign or take on loan and if a player of the calibre of Lee Cook came up, we'd have to be interested."
- The 27-year-old, who supported Rangers as a youngster, has made almost 200 appearances for the club in three separate spells and was Player of the Year in 2007.
- QPR will be aiming to make it third time lucky when they face League Two side Port Vale in the first round of the Carling Cup in August.
- Rangers have been knocked out by the Potteries side in both their two previous meetings in the competition - losing a first round replay in 1960 and suffering a 3-2 defeat at Vale Park four years ago.
- Micky Adams' team will travel to Loftus Road on Tuesday August 10. Kilburn Times

- Heaton, 24, was a 2008-09 Bluebirds regular and spent loan periods at Wycombe, Rochdale and QPR last season.

- Heaton's return came in the wake of Peter Enckelman being released.

Cardiff Official Site - HEATON TO SEAL MOVE FROM MAN UTD

Of the acquisition Dave Jones said: "I'm pleased that we have secured Tom's services from Manchester United. We all know about the lad from his time on loan here and know that we have signed a very talented young player who can offer plenty of competition for Marshall in goal.
- "United had offered him a new contract, but Tom's attitude was that he wanted to play, which says a lot about him as a player and a professional. He will certainly be a welcome addition to our ranks.

Fulham Chronicle/Paul Warburton - QPR head fight to sign Tamika Mkandawire
- QPR head a four-way fight for Leyton Orient centre-half Tamika Mkandawire.
The Malawi-born defender was the subject of a £200,000 bid by Millwall and former Rs assistant manager Kenny Jackett back in January but O’s chairman Barry Hearn rejected the bid, deeming the defender too important to his side’s relegation battle, and slapped a £500,000 price tag on him.
However, the towering defender is now out of contract, and waiting in the wings are Rangers, newly promoted Millwall, Preston and Paulo Sousa’s Swansea, although the Hoops’ financial muscle means they can offer a larger signing-on-fee, and a better wage package than Jackett and the others.
Mkandawire, 27, could be a long-term replacement for Damion Stewart, three years older that the former West Brom trainee, who got his league career into gear with Hereford.
The transfer target represented the England semi-professional team twice during his three years with the Bulls before his move to East London in 2007.
Martin Ling, then Orient manager, had pursued his man for a year and had a £60,000 bid rejected before Mkandawire made the move for free having seen his contract expire.
Should manager Neil Warnock secure Mkandawire’s services it will be seen as another understated and hopefully astute signing as Rs hope to mount a series promotion challenge come August" Fulham Chronicle

Neil Warnock's World Cup Persective
Independent - Monday, 14 June 2010
Neil Warnock: For once there is no satisfaction at all in being proved right
What I Learnt On Saturday Night: I must admit that I described Robert Green as "anaccident waiting to happen"

Sharon and I were glad to welcome a reader named Richard Romaniak to watch England play the United States on Saturday. Rick had won a World Cup competition in these pages, and one of his prizes was an evening chez Warnock, to watch the big game. The runner-up, I'm told, will get to come round twice.

It's just as well Rick was with me, because somebody had to witness what I said before kick-off. Really it was freakish the way it turned out. And it doesn't give me the slightest satisfaction, as you can imagine. But when we were talking about Capello's starting XI – and I can hardly believe the phrase I used – I must admit that I described Robert Green as "an accident waiting to happen".

I feel terrible for the lad, like everyone else. But the fact is that I couldn't really see him as an England keeper. He doesn't have the aura of David James – you see the way James runs his defence.

Maybe there was some injury issue with James. And I agree that it would have been impossible to go with Hart, as well as he has done. He does look as though he could become the long-term solution – potentially our No 1 for the best part of 20 years – but it just wouldn't be fair to pitch him into a World Cup at this stage.

Rick asked what a manager could say to the lad at half-time. And the answer is that you can't say anything. A gaffe like that, he doesn't need telling anything. All you can say is: "Come on lads, get your mate out of this mess. You all know it could have been any of you. Now let's get him out of this."

It's a tough one, though. The hardest half-time talk I've ever had was at Wembley, in a play-off final with Huddersfield. We had battered Bristol Rovers, first half, absolutely battered them – but it was 0-0 after 45 minutes. Then we scored, in injury time – and they went straight up the other end and equalised. We had been brilliant, and the dressing room was like a morgue.

As it happens, we did win that game, with a late winner – but we didn't play well for the first few minutes of the second half. You couldn't miss the deflation in England, either. Everyone feels for Green, of course they do. But the fact is that the Americans got out of jail. The question now is what Capello does for the next game. I think that if you pick him, now, you pick him for the wrong reason.

2. Stay loyal to your players
The other thing I said to Rick before the game was that Capello had to go with Heskey. He is a manager's player. Ninety per cent of pundits would not have started him. Ninety per cent of managers definitely would. And he had a cracking game, typified by his work for England's goal. Your best player has to be happy and Rooney obviously loves playing with him.

To me, though, if you stay loyal to Heskey – considering everything he did in qualifying – then you have to stay loyal to Theo Walcott, too. You don't forget people who get you out of a corner. And he gives you a different option, too, off the front man. His final ball isn't always the best but instinct would take over, and in that way he would offer you something different from Lennon or Wright-Phillips.

3. Ignore superstition at your peril
When Gerrard scored we were still finishing our dinner. And being superstitious I felt we shouldn't move from the table. We went for the comfort of the sofa and armchairs, though, and the rest is history. I remember when I didn't change some lucky underpants at Rotherham. Obviously there was a price to pay, for anyone in the vicinity, but we went 18 games unbeaten.

4. A high-tempo game is the way forward for England
I had to admit to Rick that I don't massively enjoy watching England. I always wish they played their games more like the Premier League, make the opponents work harder. When we come up against teams more comfortable on the ball, it suits them to have a slower game. Having said that, I think we were as positive as I've seen in a long time. It was a horrible game, for a manager, because everyone expects a win but you know you're up against good players who know how to make life difficult.

Overall I think expectations are too high for England. They often struggle to score goals, once they come up against world-class opposition.

5. Always keep your cool
Rick had spent the afternoon at the British Museum before coming down for the game. And then Sharon cooked us salmon and green beans for supper. All very civilised – as you would expect for a man who reads The Independent. Think of all those tabloid readers sweating in the pub!

He proved a very nice fellow, especially given that his first love is Leeds... His other teams reminded me of some of the happiest days of my career – at York and Scarborough.

And I hope he agrees that Sharon's strawberry pavlova was the highlight of the evening. After the game, my chin was on the floor – and then that came through the door. Mind you, things had got off to a bad start when Amy brought me a glass of white wine that had not been chilled. Unfortunately, thanks to Robert Green, it wasn't the last time we were missing a bit of cool on the night.

6. How to get one over on the Dutch and Germans... at fishing
At the end of the season we enjoyed a few days at a log cabin in Scotland. The weather was fantastic, we cycled miles, and I took Will mackerel-fishing. There were all these Dutch and German anglers sitting round waiting for something to happen, and William landed one with his very first cast. They all looked around and I said: "Just wait until the World Cup!" Independent

Ex-QPR Youth Michael Bryan: Watford Observer - Michael Bryan has gone from non-league to Northern Ireland international in four years Friday 11th June 2010 ) By Joe Whitbread »

Michael Bryan's debut for Northern Ireland against Turkey last month completed a remarkable four years for the Watford winger.

The 20-year-old was a 66th-minute substitute against Guus Hiddink’s side and started against Chile four days later. And this week he has signed a new one-year contract with the club and the Hornets have an option of extending it by another year.

But in 2006, Bryan’s career hung in the balance when he was released by Queens Park Rangers after the London club chose not to offer him a scholarship.

Without a club, the slight teenager began a BTEC National Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence course at college, which involved playing for non-league Hayes.

“When I got released by QPR it was always my aim to get back into a pro club, it didn’t happen as quick as I would have liked it,” he recalled. “I would have liked to have gone straight from when I got released back into a pro club but it was probably the best situation to go to Hayes which helped me build my confidence a bit and start playing regular football.”

Any player released at 16 will tell you how hard it is, but Bryan paid tribute to his family for helping him overcome the blow of being rejected by the club he joined as a nine year old.

“For me my family helped me out a lot, especially my mum and dad,” he said. “I guess I was expecting it as well because most of the season I wasn’t playing regularly which you’d expect. The fact I knew it was going to happen helped me prepare for it.”

It was at Hayes where Bryan first got noticed by Watford after impressing Hornets officials when the two sides met in a friendly. He was told to attend Watford’s London Colney training ground for a week’s trial and he was eventually signed on a non-contract basis.

Bryan signed his first professional deal at the beginning of July last year after impressing for the Watford Academy and made his first team debut in the 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United in August.

Since then the pacey midfielder has made six more appearances for the Hornets, including his first start for the club in the 4-0 defeat of Coventry City on the last game of the campaign.

Bryan’s first start and brief cameos did not go unnoticed by Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington and he was called up to the full squad after a number of key members were left out.

“I would have liked to have got on a bit more at times but I would definitely have taken this at the start of the season,” Bryan said.

“Hopefully next season I can force my way into the team and if I don’t force my way in as a regular, being someone who comes off the bench regularly.”

Bryan was one of 11 Academy graduates or current scholars in the 18-man squad at Coventry and the 20-year-old paid tribute to the way Watford promote their younger players.

He said: “Youngsters definitely get a chance at Watford. It’s a good club to be at and hopefully it will be my time to shine next season.” Watford Observer

Paul Warburton/Fulham Chronicle - Lee Cook's QPR future in the balance
- He is getting married tomorrow – but the future of QPR hero Lee Cook is far from assured. The fans favourite may well tie the knot only to find he could be divorcing his beloved club before the new campaign starts.
- Boss Neil Warnock admitted that pre-season for the left-sided midfielder, who cost £1.2million when brought back from Fulham in 2008, would be pivotal.
- He said: “I need to divide teams up and play friendlies that allows me to have a good look at everybody. “One thing’s for sure, I plan to get in more new players – and not all the current squad is going to stay. They won’t get a game – and that’s no good to anybody.”

- Cook, who often totes up to 14 of his Rangers-supporting family to home games, has suffered his fair share of injuries over the last two campaigns and was restricted to a mere eight starts last season. The dead ball specialist scored just once against Derby in the 1-1 draw at Loftus Road on March 23. Fulham Chronicle

FLASHBACK TO DUNGA and QPR

Carlos Dunga and QPR

August 2004: -Soccernet " Dunga revealed as QPR benefactor
Brazilian World Cup-winning captain Dunga has been revealed as one of the benefactors pumping money into QPR.
Rangers chairman Bill Power has confirmed that the star is a backer of Barnaby Holdings, the firm hoping to take a 29.9% stake in the Loftus Road club.
The company recently acquired 10% of the club's shares and is likely to make a further investment in the next two weeks, increasing the stake by a further 19.9%, reports the club's official website.
Power is clearly excited at such high-profile interest, as well as the £1.7million it could bring the club.
'Dunga is part of a football consortium that has shown a real desire to be involved in what we are doing here at QPR and I believe that their investment underlines what excellent progress we are making as a club,' he said.
'I'm thrilled to welcome a former player of the very highest calibre to Loftus Road - his standing and achievements in the game are there for all to see.'

Evening Standard Dunga shares in lofty ambitions for Rangers
Aug 24, 2004 by WAYNE VEYSEY

BRAZIL World Cup-winning captain Dunga is set to attend his first Queens Park Rangers match within weeks.
The football great has emerged as one of the figures behind the Monacobased consortium poised to buy nearly a third of Queens Park Rangers.
Barnaby Holdings has already purchased 10 per cent of the club's shares, worth around Pounds 550,000, and are hoping to wrap up another 19.9 per cent in the next fortnight.
Dunga, 40, is one of five men who have invested equally in the club.
The former Fiorentina and Stuttgart midfielder didn't join his fellow investors, three Italians and a Frenchman, at Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Derby and will not attend tonight's Carling Cup game against Swansea.
But Rangers chairman Bill Power said it was only a matter of time before the Brazilian, who won 90 caps before retiring from international football after the 1998 World Cup, makes his first visit to Loftus Road.
"Dunga is definitely coming to watch some games," Power said. "All the investors were sent a DVD of the highlights of last season - whether or not it has impressed them I don't know."
Majority shareholder Gianni Paladini and director Kevin McGrath went to Monaco a fortnight ago to tie up the deal and were introduced to Dunga.
"He doesn't speak much English, but they said he was courteous, polite and charming," Power added. "He knew all about QPR and has shown a real desire to be involved.
"I am thrilled to welcome a former player of the very highest calibre to Loftus Road."
Meanwhile, Ian Holloway has vowed to put out a full-strength team for tonight's home game against Swansea.
"I don't have the luxury of resting or rotating any player at the moment," the Rangers manager said.
"We will be going for the win against Swansea." AP

August 2005: Dunga Flies in for The Bill Power/Ouster Board Meeting
Saturday, August 27, 2005

Tom DartQueens Park Rangers 0 Sheffield Wednesday 0EVEN by Ian Holloway’s unmatched standards it was an extraordinary post-match press conference. The Queens Park Rangers manager launched an impassioned defence of his club and their two feuding directors after last night’s dull goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday.Bill Power, the chairman, was removed from his post, and Mark Devlin, the chief executive, was sacked after Gianni Paladini, a director, ousted Power at a board meeting on Wednesday with the help of Carlos Dunga, the former Brazil captain, who flew in from Japan to vote.Holloway said that the uncertainty was affecting his players and used the analogy of a dysfunctional family. Given that a director is alleged to have been involved in the threatening of Paladini at gunpoint before the previous home game, dysfunctional may be an understatement.“......
.Power intends to challenge his removal on the basis that Dunga, although a director, was ineligible to vote. ..http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,435-1752939,00.html

PALADINI has seized control of QPR — with former Brazil captain Carlos Dunga’s help. The Italian director was recently alleged to have been threatened by an armed gang at Loftus Road. But yesterday Paladini ousted chairman Bill Power and claimed victory in a bitter struggle for control of the club.Dunga represents a Monaco-based group that owns a stake in Rangers and little had been heard of him since he was made a director last year. But he stunned lifelong fan Power by flying in from Japan and voting with Paladini at a crunch board meeting.Power, hugely popular among fans and club staff, was voted out and chief executive Mark Devlin sacked. .” The Sun

Dunga will face QPR shareholders
Dunga helped Gianni Paladini take control of QPR
Carlos Dunga will face shareholders at Queens Park Rangers' Annual General Meeting on Friday.
The former Brazil captain became a QPR director in 2004 as part of a Monaco-based group that later staged a boardroom coup at Loftus Road.

Dunga did not attend board meetings prior to using his vote to help Gianni Paladini oust Bill Power as chairman.

"I take my role as a director of QPR seriously and look forward to appearing in front of shareholders," said Dunga.

"Myself and the other directors have put money into the club to help it survive and will continue to do so."

Paladini has faced scepticism from some fans since Power and chief executive Mark Devlin were removed following a series of boardroom disagreements.

Rangers are heavily in debt and several behind-the-scenes changes have been made since Paladini took control along with Antonio Caliendo.

Both men are former agents and Paladini has defended their running of the club.

Paladini said: "Can anyone say QPR aren't in a better position than when I came in two years ago?

"The losses are reduced and we are in a position to move forward. Everything is settled and we just want to get on with running the club.

"This board have invested over £8m. Yes, some of that has been used to buy shares, but that is how much has been paid and that shows commitment." BBC

New Brazil boss Carlos Dunga has tendered his resignation as non-executive director of the R's. Dunga - who joined QPR in September 2004 - was named as Brazil's new boss on Monday evening....Speaking from the Club's first team training camp in Italy, R's Chairman Gianni Paladini said: "Dunga has resigned with immediate effect.'' Paladini continued: "I'd like to wish him all the best and thank him for everything he has done for Queens Park Rangers Football Club.'' Thursday, July 27, 2006 - QPR Holding Chairman, Antonio Caliendo Statement re QPR Post-Dunga-In the wake of widespread and further inaccurate reporting, Chairman of QPR Holdings Ltd, Antonio Caliendo, would like to issue the following statement:
"Despite Carlos Dunga tendering his resignation as a non-executive director on Tuesday, he will continue to support the Club financially.
"The Board's objective remains the same as it always has been - to get QPR back on a sound financial footing and in time, a return to the Premiership.
"I want to reassure the shareholders and supporters that we are doing everything possible to achieve that goal.
"We have invested wisely in the squad this summer and I believe we are in a fantastic position to challenge in the top half of the Championship.
"Last season was a very difficult time for the Board. Since September, we've put in over £4million to ensure the Club's finances are in a stable position to build for the future.
"As a Board, we aim to keep our promise of not selling our best players. Obviously there are certain clauses in players' contracts which means we have to allow them to speak to other Clubs, but our aim is the Premiership and to achieve this we need to keep all our best players.
"The Dan Shittu situation is a perfect example. The bottom line is that we want to keep Danny at the Club. He's a fantastic professional and a tremendous player, but if we receive a £3million bid then he has the freedom to talk to whoever comes in for him.
"We love Queens Park Rangers and we are doing everything possible to safeguard the prestige of this wonderful Club.
"Together, there is only one voice - We Are QPR.'' QPR

July 2006 - After missing QPR targets, Dunga has switched tribes
Evening Standard (London), Jul 26, 2006 by WAYNE VEYSEY

FROM director of Queens Park Rangers to manager of Brazil.
That is some quantum leap for Carlos Dunga, the midfield footsoldier who lifted the 1994 World Cup and has now been trusted with guiding Brazil to the top of the tree in South Africa in 2010.

It is an extraordinary show of faith from the five-times winners, given that Dunga has no managerial experience and has turned down dozens of offers to move into coaching since retiring seven years ago.

A knock-on effect of the 42-year-old's appointment is that he has resigned as a non-executive director at QPR - even though he was not required to do so under FIFA rules.

Rangers say Dunga will continue to be a shareholder "for the time being" but it seems only a matter of the i's being dotted and t's being crossed before the final whistle is blown on one of English football's most bizarre relationships.

The Brazilian icon became involved with QPR 22 months ago when he emerged as the figurehead for two mysterious Monaco-based consortia, Barnaby and Wanlock, who had invested Pounds 1.7million for a 30 per cent stake in the club. But what exactly has he contributed to the Super Hoops?

Still instantly recognisable with the buzz-cut hairstyle that he paraded as one of football's most reliable midfield enforcers, Dunga was greeted with enthusiasm by supporters when he first arrived at Shepherds Bush.

He explained he had been persuaded to come on board by his friends at Barnaby, who included QPR kingpin Antonio Caliendo, a former football agent, and looked forward to being an ambassador for the club, promoting their name across the globe and using his South American contacts to alert them of any top young talent. In an interview with Standard Sport, Dunga displayed a deft touch in public relations by naming all the Loftus Road heroes of the 1970s, 80s and early 90s.

Some were sceptical of his involvement but others appreciated the muchneeded glitz and glamour he brought to Loftus Road, qualities which had been absent in the post-administration era.

There were fears that Dunga had been recruited to unseat manager Ian Holloway but the multilingual Brazilian stressed he had no ambitions in that field, ironic as that now appears.

"I've got no intention of being a football manager," he explained. "I get phone calls every week from clubs asking me to be their manager. In Brazil, I've been asked three or four time this season to manage Flamengo."

However, Dunga was to have little time for QPR in a hectic schedule that centred on his work as an ambassador for the Brazilian national team and consultant to one of his former clubs, Jubilo Iwata in Japan.

He went to only a handful of Rangers games in two years and failed to bring in any South American talent, blaming work permit restrictions on the players.

When quizzed by one supporter at last year's AGM what he actually brought to the Loftus Road plate, Dunga was evasive before chairman Gianni Paladini leapt to his defence, claiming: "He brought in money to save this club, that's what he has helped with."

The former Fiorentina and Stuttgart star was one of five men said to have invested equal sums of around Pounds 500,000 in QPR, a shareholding that now stands at 49 per cent.

Yet it would appear not to be a match made in heaven for Dunga, who cynics suggest may have been recruited by the Monaco consortia as a frontman to appease supporters dubious of investment from unknown foreigners.

Apart from the cash and the publicity, it seems his legacy to Rangers will prove to be the role he played in ousting Bill Power and Mark Devlin, the former chairman and chief executive, from the board last summer.

This dramatic coup ultimately paved the way for Paladini and Caliendo, now a director, to assume full control at the cash- strapped club.

Dunga had not attended any of the previous six board meetings before he flew into London to use his casting vote to axe Devlin and Power. Maybe it was that kind of ruthlessness which so impressed the powerbrokers at the Brazil Football Federation.

Brazil Star in a nutshell

After missing QPR targets, Dunga has switched tribes Brazil star in a nutshell Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri (nicknamed Dunga, which is Portuguese for Dopey) Born: 31 October, 1963, Rio Grande do Sul Position: midfielder Clubs: Internacional (1980-84, 1999-2000), Corinthians (1984-85), Santos (1986-87), Vasco da Gama (1987), Pisa (1987-88), Fiorentina (1988-92), Pescara (1992-93), VfB Stuttgart (1993-95), Jubilo Iwata (1995-98) International career: Brazil (1987- 98) - 91 games, six goals; led country to 1994 World Cup triumph Post-retirement: QPR director 2004-2006, Appointed Brazil head coach July 2006 Standard
