Daily Mail - Adel Taarabt quits Morocco to concentrate on QPR's promotion push as playmaker insists he's been 'disrespected' By Steve Goodman 26th October 2010
Adel Taarabt has boosted Queens Park Rangers's Premier League bid by quitting the Morocco national side.
The former Spurs midfielder has inspired Neil Warnock's side to the top of the Championship in an unbeaten start to the season.
Taarabt, 21, has now turned his back on international football after flying to Tanzania for an African Cup of Nations tie - only to be left on the bench by coach Dominique Cuperly.
'I will stop playing for Morocco this season,' the playmaker said. 'I want to concentrate on my club, as the national team disrespected me. The fact I was called up to face Tanzania and not used did not please me at all. I want to play all the time, so I'm retiring as I did not play for them.
'I spent 22 hours on aeroplanes, I did not play and nobody explained to me why. The Moroccan FA has invited me to play against Northern Ireland next month - but I don't plan to respond favourably.' Mail

QPR Official Site - CONNOLLY: 'LET'S EXTEND THE RECORD!'
- R's defender Matt Connolly admits he is proud of the R's record start to the season, but insists the hard work is still very much ahead.
- Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Connolly said: "We're really proud of the record.
- "It's a really good achievement.
- "We want to keep it going now and make sure it's something that remains in the Club history books for a long, long time."
- Connolly admits Rangers have ridden their luck on occasions so far this season, but pinpoints the R's team spirit and balance as key factors in their success.
- "I think we've been lucky to an extent - like the two recent penalties and the two late goals at Derby," he said.
- "But I tend to believe you make your own luck and the spirit we've got, combined with the balance of the squad, has played a huge part in our unbeaten run.
- "It's (the spirit) the best I've known it in my time here and long may it continue." QPR

Sport.co - Jagielka hails "fantastic" Warnock Author: Jonny Abrams
Posted on:25 October 2010 -

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has hailed the “fantastic” work that Neil Warnock is doing as manager of Championship leaders Queens Park Rangers.

The England centre-back played under Warnock at Sheffield United before moving to Goodison Park for £4m in 2007 and he is impressed with how his old boss has adapted to life at Loftus Road, where he has been given more money to spend than at previous clubs.

Speaking as a guest on Sky Sports show Goals on Sunday, Jagielka said he would always be thankful to the QPR boss for his guidance in the formative stages of his career.

He said: “He’s doing a fantastic job.

“The gaffer’s well known for doing things on a shoestring budget and obviously that was the case at Crystal Palace.

“He’s moved to richer pastures at QPR and he’s bought some fantastic players for the Championship.

“You look at the bench they had on Friday night and it was amazing, really. I’m sure he’s enjoying being there and being able to spend.

“He’s a great guy who did a lot for my career. He gave me my chance and I’ll forever be thankful for that.

“He’s a character to say the least!”

Northampton Official Site PARKER BACK AT QPR Winger Josh Parker has returned to Queen's Park Rangers a week before his loan spell was due to expire.
"Josh has gone back a week early," confirmed boss Ian Sampson.

"He was not happy when we told him he would not be in the starting XI for the game at Oxford at the weekend. He asked to go back and we agreed that was the best course of action."
Parker was set to miss the Carling Cup game at Ipswich on Tuesday as he was cup tied.

Ealing Gazette/Yann Tear - Warnock plays down move for Arsenal youngster
- NEIL Warnock says rumours that Rangers are lining up Arsenal youngster Jay Emmanuel-Thomas are wide of the mark.
- The 19-year-old, who has already been out on loan at Doncaster Rovers this season, is a versatile player who can play on the wing, as centre forward or even at left back according to his manager Arsene Wenger.
- But he will not be following Jay Simpson as the latest Gunner to make the short trip across town for a loan spell.
- "Is a loan signing in the offing? Not that I'm aware of," said the QPR boss.
- "I read who I'm supposed to be signing and he was supposed to be playing on Friday wasn't he?
- "I've not made any inquiries and I'm quite happy with what I've got

Mirror's Michael Calvin - Neil Warnock is not everyone’s cup of Yorkshire Tea.
- He can be a cartoon Tyke, but I’ve a soft spot for him.
- Warnock was in character, laughing off suggestions he is keeping the QPR manager’s seat warm for Marcello Lippi.
- The suggestion came from Flavio Briatore, the posturing buffoon who uses Formula One as a Scalextric set.
- More brass than brains, as they say in Scarborough. Mirror

Des Kelly/Daily Mail - [b]Stop being Lippi and back boss, Flavio
- Queens Park Rangers sit on top of the Championship. They look a revitalised force on a mission to rejoin the elite for the first time in 15 years.
- That is largely down to their manager Neil Warnock, who is seeking to repeat his uncanny knack of achieving promotion by chasing the seventh of his career.
- There is no doubt Warnock has made a brilliant start to the season. So how has he been rewarded?
- Let's ask Flavio Briatore, QPR's disgraced former chairman. You'll remember him as the man who scurried for cover after being implicated in the Singapore 'Crashgate' cheat scandal.
It turns out, the Italian had a brilliant plan to motivate his manager.
- Not content with having been accused of orchestrating a deliberate car crash in Formula One, Briatore seems intent on driving QPR's promotion push into another brick wall.
He said that if Warnock's side reached the Premier League, he would install Marcello Lippi as boss.

Briatore blurted: 'Bernie Ecclestone and I have a 70 per cent stake in QPR.' (Since he didn't specify the cut, I'm guessing that split is Bernie 69 per cent, Big Mouth 1 per cent.)
'And if we were to get into the Premier League,' he continued, 'I have a dream - and that is to have Lippi as coach.'
How dispiriting it must be for Warnock to know that if he leads the club back into the top flight an investor will seek to replace him.

During Briatore's time as chairman at Loftus Road, Rangers became a football joke, using 12 different managers and caretaker bosses in a little over three seasons.
Rumours even circulated that managers were expected to abide by team instructions faxed in to them from the sunbed of a yacht moored somewhere in the Mediterranean.

It is surely no coincidence that as soon as Briatore disappeared from the scene, QPR shot to the top of the table under Warnock's effective stewardship.

Naturally, having seen the Italian's remarks, QPR tried some damage limitation, issuing the following statement: 'The board of directors - including Flavio Briatore - are 100 per cent behind Neil Warnock.'
Indeed. It's much easier to push someone from behind.
But just like Briatore, Rangers supporters also have dreams. They dream of reaching the Premier League. And they dream that a certain perma-tanned pillock would shut his trap, stop pretending he knows something about the game, and leave the manager to carry on his good work." Daily Mail

Dion Fanning Sunday Independent of Ireland

- "...Stan Bowles was at City at the same time as Allison and had a fist fight with him before he left and ended up at QPR.
- Bowles was once said to "symbolise nearly everything that mature spectators regard as wrong with today's game". I interviewed Bowles a few years ago in a pub in Brentford. Bowles was late for our 11.0am appointment and while I was briefed, as journalists like to say now, by a man from Wexford who was in there having a settler, a few others pointed out that it was very unlike Bowles to be late. As a gambler, Bowles knew that tardiness could be costly. Unfortunately, being punctual was even more expensive.
- Shepherd's Bush has always been the Irishman's stomping ground, with Goldhawk Road, a tattered boulevard for crazy dreamers and crazies who had run out of dreams.

Loftus Road has accommodated them all and in recent times the crazy dreamers are in the boardroom with men like Flavio Briatore. QPR are top of the championship and have appointed an unlikely manager in Neil Warnock. When you have had nine managers in three years (two of whom have been there twice), then you're bound to have had one or two who were unlikely.

Last week, QPR posted a statement on its website that said: "Following speculation in today's press, we would like to confirm that stories linking Marcello Lippi with Queens Park Rangers Football Club are completely unfounded."

In an interview to an Italian magazine, Briatore said he had a dream. In it he saw QPR in the Premier League where they would be managed by Marcello Lippi. The "unfounded stories" had come from the co-owner but the club denied them just the same.

Football is used to treating words as an inconvenience or as part of a negotiating position. They have never taken them seriously.

Things weren't any better in the past, some just survived it. But football was always about destroying the weak. There was no pastoral care in the golden age.

When Allison died, some said there were no personalities left in the game anymore. What was last week about but gripping, complex personalities? Their flaws are apparent to everyone and the mature spectator might think they are all that's wrong with today's game. But even the mature spectator is never bored.

Independent/ Neil Warnock: I'm sure a World Cup winner could learn a lot from me – but Lippi won't be coming to QPR

What I Learnt This Week - Saturday, 23 October 2010

Everyone has got very excited about a few comments from Flavio Briatore which appeared in the Italian press. By the time they got into the English papers he was being quoted saying he will make Marcello Lippi QPR manager if we get into the Premier League.

Obviously it would be a great experience for me to work with a man who has won the World Cup and the Champions League, and I'm sure Marcello would also enjoy learning from me, but, sorry to disappoint you all – and especially Sharon who thinks me winning promotion then being paid up is the ideal scenario – I don't think it is going to happen.

Flavio has spoken to me, and told me that he did get collared by a journalist who was talking about Italian managers working with England. They spoke about Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Mancini, and Fabio Capello, and Flavio said it had always been his dream to take QPR into the Premier League and have Marcello Lippi as manager. But, he assured me, he did not mean at this moment in time. I think Flavio was surprised when I said, "It does not bother me in the slightest." I've been in the game long enough to know things get built into something they are not. I get on all right with Flavio, and with Bernie Ecclestone. They, and Amit Bhatia have been so supportive of me and the team since I've been at the club. I enjoy their company and I'm not in the least bit worried. I'm enjoying every minute of being the manager at QPR and a hyped-up newspaper story is not going to change that.

As I write I don't know how we got on at Ashton Gate last night, where we were trying to create a new club record for an unbeaten start to the season. It's not been my favourite ground in recent seasons so I hope we had a bit more luck.

Three years ago we were 1-0 up and the ref put four minutes up on the board. Bristol City scored in the sixth minute. My thoughts on that cost me three grand. Two years ago, in the promotion play-off semi-final, Ben Watson hit the post from a penalty; I'm convinced we would have gone on to win and then given Hull a good run for their money in the final. Then last year Freddie Sears scored a great goal to put us in front. Unfortunately for me and Freddie, four people in the stadium did not see it, and they were all wearing black at the time. To rub salt in the wounds Bristol City scored a last-minute winner.

Freddie never did score in the League for us, had that goal counted I'm sure his confidence would have been lifted. I'm so pleased he has gone on loan to Sc**thorpe. He's a smashing lad and I hope he can kick-start his career.

2. Deal done, now England will see the real Rooney

The chess game has come to an end and Wayne Rooney has signed a new deal. It is the logical conclusion. I couldn't really see him in a Chelsea or Manchester City shirt, and by the sound of it Coleen didn't fancy moving to Spain. I think it is good news for England. Now this has been put to bed I think we will see the real Rooney, all this ducking and diving must have been affecting his game.

I can't see his team-mates holding it against him. They know him and won't have been too surprised at what he said. Now he's got a fabulous new contract he can tell them he was only joking and he loves them all. I don't think the size of the contract will cause a massive problem either, players accept the best player gets top whack.

I feel sorry for Everton, who must have been counting the money they would have got from their sell-on clause, but I know two people who will have been delighted at all the week's headlines. David Cameron and Nick Clegg could not have wished for a better diversion as they announced all those cuts.

3. Carroll reminds me of the likeable rogue I put straight

It brought back a few memories when I saw Andy Carroll has to live at Kevin Nolan's house as a condition of his bail. When I was at Plymouth I had a similar situation with Ronnie Mauge. Ronnie got me promoted, he scored the winner in the play-off final, but he also caused me a problem or two.

He got in trouble with the law and ended up going to court. I gave a character reference and told the judge if he allowed Ronnie bail he could live in our house, which was 20 miles from Plymouth so it meant he would not set foot in Plymouth at night time. The judge agreed. So I had Ronnie round washing the pots and vacuum cleaning for the next few weeks.

It turned into a great time for me because we did have some laughs. He was a likeable rogue. Sharon loved him, he had this fabulous smile with a gold tooth. But on the pitch he could handle himself. He was like a cold assassin and he didn't pull out of any tackles. I think he began to realise, as he was washing up and hoovering, that he was better off behaving himself, so I take a lot of credit for turning his life around. He still keeps in touch and calls for advice as he helps run a local team near Ipswich.

4. Jaunt to Queen's club is the perfect cure for away-day hell

Last night was the end of the week of travel hell. Saturday we played Norwich at home, Tuesday we played at Swansea. Last night at Bristol. Well done the Football League's fixtures people. What with that and both Norwich and Swansea being awarded penalties I'm beginning to wonder if there's a conspiracy to end our unbeaten run. Thankfully Paddy saved them.

I enjoyed Swansea. The new stadium is very impressive (what with Cardiff's new ground as well Welsh football seems on the up) and everyone was very welcoming. Three people even asked me to autograph copies of last week's Independent column.

With getting back in the early hours on Wednesday we have been on the road every day. I felt I needed a blow-out after all that travelling and was lucky enough to get a couple of hours' tennis at Queen's Club. Oh, how the other half live.

That evening I decided to relax and watch a bit of football. The Tottenham game looked the most interesting, so I turned that on. At half-time, at four down and with 10 men, I had to turn it off. I didn't want to see Harry embarrassed by eight or nine. With the other games all boring I decided to go though my planner on Sky+ and eliminate all these football programmes which were clogging it up (Sharon told me to find space for some X-Factor and Strictly). That took me to quarter-past eleven. You can imagine how I felt when I eventually turned on the news to see the 4-3 scoreline. I saw the highlights and what a fantastic hat-trick by Gareth Bale, and how proud Harry must have been after fearing the worst. I felt good for Harry with that end result. Also, my old mate Benitez must have regretted some of his substitutions.

I wished there had been another three or four minutes, but the result gave Tottenham pride back in their game, which could have been squashed if it had been a demolition with the number of players Harry has missing. It will have given them a lift before today's important match against Everton when the early kick-off won't help Harry after such a draining away trip.

5. Hooray for half-term and some quality time with family

The kids are looking forward to half-term and so am I. This week I have hardly seen the family, just hotels and the bus. I'm glad we haven't got a midweek game so we'll be able to do one or two things together.

6. Football must help people get through belt-tightening

I feel embarrassed now mentioning my bus pass when all these cuts have been made, but I enjoy going on the bus. That's not a crime is it? I hope you don't think any worse of me. I could always keep a record of my bus trips and hand my fare to charity.

It sounds like we're in for a period of belts being tightened and people thinking about how they spend their money, so I do feel football should really try to give people the opportunity to take kids into games at a reasonable price. It is still the most popular sport in the country, the chance for people to get rid of the frustrations of their week, and we need to help in what will be a difficult time for many. Indpendent

- "It's good for the Club, and for the players to be a part of it," he said.
- "The lads will always remember being a part of this achievement.

QPR Official Site - WARNOCK ON ROBINS
Neil Warnock paid tribute to his top-of-the-table charges, who came back from a goal down to take a point at Bristol City.

Patrick Agyemang's strike with just seven minutes to spare earned the R's a deserved share of the spoils, on a night when QPR recorded a new Club record start to the season with their 13 successive match unbeaten in the npower Championship.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk at the final whistle, Warnock said: "I think a lot of teams would have probably thought 'this is not going to be our night' - but we're not like that.

"We went a bit gung-ho in the second half, you do when you're a goal down!

"We come into games thinking we can win every one, not that we can't be beaten."

"Defenders look after themselves in games like that. I thought today was a team performance.

"Bristol City will make it difficult for a few teams now they've got their act together.

"I sometimes think the games against teams at the bottom are the more difficult ones.

The R's gaffer admitted that it's been a testing week for his side following their trip to Swansea City on Tuesday prior to this evening's clash in Bristol, but highlighted the importance of having a big squad, as Rob Hulse came from the bench to make his first outing in a QPR shirt.

"You really shouldn't be asked to play three games in six days. It's scandalous really, but you've just got to do it," Warnock added.

"He (Hulse) was a steal. I was delighted to get him - you're going to need a squad.

"We really work hard and when you get a result like that, it makes it all worthwhile." QPR

Telegraph - Warnock happy to exact some revenge over Robins
An 84th-minute equaliser from substitute Patrick Agyemang meant Warnock's men extended their unbeaten run in the npower Championship to 13 games, one better than their team of 1947/48 managed.

Jon Stead had fired rock bottom City ahead after 16 minutes with a 20-yard shot that flashed in off the underside of the crossbar.

I've been waiting a long time to manage a side like this and I'm enjoying every minute of it," said Rangers boss Warnock. "We had to work really hard for a result and kept going right until the end. I wasn't thinking about the record, just getting another point.

"I've been on the wrong end of some controversial moments against Bristol City so I think I was due a late goal. I loved signalling 1-1 to their fans as I left the field because they always give me a hot reception.

"We haven't won our last few games but eight victories and five draws is hardly a crisis. You always relish it when your team are top of the table and life is pretty good at the moment Telegraph

Guardian - Patrick Agyemang reprieves QPR after Jonathan Stead strikes early
Championship Bristol City 1 Stead 16 QPR 1 Agyemang 84 Stuart James

Queens Park Rangers broke a club record as they stretched their unbeaten run in the Championship to 13 matches, but there was little evidence of the chasm that exists between these clubs in the league table. Leading through Jon Stead's splendid fourth goal of the season, Bristol City looked set to register a second win in four days until the Rangers substitute Patrick Agyemang turned the ball home six minutes from time.

Agyemang's goal extends their lead at the top to three points and keeps City anchored to the foot of the table on goal difference. Neil Warnock will be thankful to emerge with a point from a stadium where he has bitter memories, after his last visit ended with Crystal Palace losing 1-0 after Freddie Sears scored "the goal that never was", yet four draws from five matches suggest his QPR team have lost some of their early-season momentum.

City's breakthrough came against the run of play, although there was much to admire about the quality of the goal. Danny Rose, on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur, was the architect as he escaped on the left before releasing Stead midway inside the QPR half. There was still much for Stead to do but Rose's intelligent run opened up space for the striker to stride forward and thump a 22-yard shot high into the roof of the net.

After dominating possession early on and opening up City with ease, Rangers lost their way after falling behind and would have been two down but for Paddy Kenny blocking Rose's low shot with his legs. The visitors, however, looked particularly dangerous whenever Kyle Walker, another player on loan from Spurs, broke on the right. Walker flashed several first-half shots wide and also created a decent chance that Jamie Mackie squandered.

Rangers thought they had levelled within 60 seconds of the restart but Jamie Mackie's effort, after David James had initially saved from Heidar Helguson, was ruled out for offside. City immediately broke at the other end but Danny Haynes, after neat work from his striker-partner Stead, saw his shot deflected wide. Marvin Elliott also came close to adding a second City goal with an excellent 25-yard drive that Kenny was stretching every sinew to tip over.

Warnock, looking increasingly anxious in his technical area, introduced Tommy Smith and Rob Hulse from the bench as Rangers' pursuit of an equaliser became more and more desperate. Kaspers Gorkss thought he had scored when his towering header beat James but Jamie McAllister cleared off the line. City were not so fortunate in the 84th minute, however, when Agyemang, who had a loan spell at Ashton Gate last season, pounced to hook in Matt Connolly's shot.

TELEGRAPH - Bristol City 1 Queens Park Rangers 1: match report
Real a full match report of the Championship match between Bristol City and Queens Park Rangers at Ashton Gate on Friday October 22 2010.
By Sandy Macaskill

Neil Warnock is so confident at Queens Park Rangers that he just laughed when he found out Flavio Briatore, the former chairman who remains a major shareholder, had revealed an interest in appointing Marcello Lippi as manager.

He might not be quite so boisterous after seeing his side draw their third straight match – against Bristol City, the bottom side in the Championship. Under Briatore, that sort of run buys you the sack.

Fortunately, Briatore no longer wields the power at Loftus Road (to the supporters’ relief), and besides, QPR are still top of the table, while their longest ever unbeaten run at the start of a season was secured when Patrick Agyemang cancelled out Jon Stead’s first-half goal.

So Warnock remains in buoyant mood. “I can’t see Lippi wanting to be reserve manager,” he joked. “That’s the only vacancy I can see.”

What should concern him is that Adel Taraabt seems to have taken a leaf out of Briatore’s book on self-importance. The general view is that since becoming captain the Moroccan has understood the need to put himself second, but he continually ignored team-mates in favour of taking on the opposition team on his tod — Hogan Ephraim almost self-combusted as a result.

QPR were soon set the challenge of finding a goal by Stead, who jinked in-field after 16 minutes and pulled the trigger from 25 yards, the ball lancing in off the bar.

Jamie Mackie was unfortunate to see his second-half header ruled offside, while Taarabt tried this and that, the result usually a shot blazed over the bar. “He puts bums on seats, so you can’t knock me for playing him,” Warnock said. Even so, he replaced him with Agyemang, who scrambled a goal with seven minutes to go.

Mirror - Richard Latham

Patrick Agyemang came off the bench to rescue a point for Rangers.

The striker, who sent part of last season on loan at Ashton Gate, replaced Adel Taarabt after 78 minutes and struck five minutes later, forcing the ball in from point blank range following a corner and a shot from Matt Connolly.

Jon Stead's spectacular 16th minute strike had given bottom club City a massive lift against the Championship leaders at Ashton Gate.

The striker let fly from 20 yards after a break by Danny Rose and saw his rasping effort go in off the underside of the crossbar.

City had to make a late change when Jemal Campbell-Ryce failed a fitness test on a hamstring problem. Danny Rose, on loan from Spurs, deputised on the left wing.

Rangers were unchanged, which meant former City full-back Bradley Orr had to be content with a place on the bench.

Manager Neil Warnock has been involved in several controversial incidents at Ashton Gate over the years and received his customary hot reception from home fans.

Rangers began well and Kyle Walker, another Tottenham loanee, got forward from right-back to go close twice in the opening minutes. .

Then Walker teed up Jamie Mackie for a shot from inside the box that beat David James, but flashed wide.

Stead's goal came with his side under pressure. But it sparked Rose into action and the tricky winger began to cause problems for the Rangers defence.

His shot from a narrow angle brought a sprawling 20th minute save from Kenny. Then he set up Danny Haynes, who fired over from the edge of the box.

Kasper Gorkss headed over for Rangers from a Walker cross. But City were gaining more possession and it took a brilliant interception from Clint Hill on the goal-line to deny Stead a simple finish from a Haynes centre.

Walker fired inches wide again before being on the receiving end of a late challenge from Rose that brought the City player a caution. The final action of the first half saw Mackie hook a shot fractionally wide with James a spectator.

In a dramatic start to the second period Rangers had the ball in the net through Mackie only for Heidar Helguson to be ruled offside.

Within moments Haynes was threatening at the other end, but mis-hit his shot when through and collected only a corner.

It took two fantastic Kenny saves to keep Rangers in the game as the home side began to find gaps. First he arched his back to tip over a 30-yard rocket from Marvin Elliott.

The keeper had to be equally alert four minutes later, diving to his right to keep out a low drive from Stead.

But the visitors kept threatening themselves in a gripping match and Jamie McAllister had to clear off the line from a Gorkss header before Agyemang struck

QPR compared to other great Championship Teams
- But WITHOUT a mention of comparison to past QPR teams such as Alec Stock's 67/68 QPR team, Gordon Jago's 72/73 QPR team and Terry Venable's 1982/83 QPR Team]

Barney Ronay Blog/The Guardian Blog home QPR are good, but where do they rank among the greatest second-tier teams?
There is a heady list of contenders, ranging from Alf Ramsey's Ipswich through to 02-03 Pompey, via Leeds and Liverpool

These are heady times for Queen's Park Rangers, the Championship's current early-season hare. A second consecutive goalless draw, the latest against Swansea City on Tuesday night, might have stilled their boisterous momentum; but if Neil Warnock's team can avoid defeat at Bristol City on Friday night they will have equalled a club record of 13 matches unbeaten from the start of the season.

The larger picture is even more feverishly hopeful. Lakshmi Mittal, the world's fifth richest man, owns 20% of the club. With the likelihood of money to spend in January should they remain in the running for promotion to the Premier League, there has even been some cautious talk about Rangers finding themselves transformed before long into one of the strongest teams to have emerged at this level for some time.

This may be a little premature. Against Norwich on Saturday, Rangers looked solid and sprightly rather than captivating, lacking in the excess of attacking options that marks out the best teams. Warnock still sounds a little nonplussed by the efforts of his main centre forward, Heidar Helguson. And while much has been made of Adel Taarabt's subtle talents, the Moroccan seems often to decorate games rather than dominating. Rangers may – technically - be the richest club in the history of English football's second tier. But they are still some way short, as yet, of registering as one of the best at this level.

There is a heady list of contenders for that particular title. Any attempt to identify the greatest second-tier teams is fraught with handicaps, requiring as it does a comparison between disparate eras and also an awareness of the temporary nature of these things: success can often lead to the dismantling, or at least, derailing of even the finest promoted team. A flush of second-tier success can often be tarnished by travails at the higher level. But it is still worth celebrating in its own right.

In recent times the Portsmouth team of 2002-03 stands out. Inspired by an Indian summering Paul Merson, Harry Redknapp's team went top of the table in the autumn and stayed there for the rest of the season. Two years earlier Fulham, in the first flowering of their brief Manchester-United-of-The-South period had topped 100 points by the end of the season, with Louis Saha scoring 27 times.

Kevin Keegan's title-winning team of 1992-93 is worth a mention, as is, from a personnel point of view, the promotion-winning Newcastle United of 1983-84, who could field Chris Waddle, Peter Beardsley and Keegan himself, soon to depart his playing career via post-match helicopter.

Howard Wilkinson's Leeds United demand consideration by their achievements alone: champions of the second tier in 1990, Leeds won the last Football League top tier title two years later with pretty much the same group of players. The 1981 West Ham United champion team was a delight: Billy Bonds, Alan Devonshire, Paul Goddard and Trevor Brooking had also played a part in winning the FA Cup from the second division the previous year.

Beyond that, things become a little fuzzed by the passing of time. There are those who will be able to make a case for Bill Shankly's Liverpool or Don Revie's Leeds, both of whom topped the second tier in the early 1960s.

My own preference, based solely on their enduring legend, would be for Alf Ramsey's Ipswich Town, champions of the Second Division in 1961 and then champions of the top tier a season later fielding an almost identical team. Under Ramsey, Ipswich came pretty much from nowhere, propelled by the benevolent chairmanship of the eccentric John Cobbold and inspired by Ramsey's innovative tactics that involved deploying the one-paced, one-footed but sublimely talented inside forward Jimmy Leadbetter in an unusual roving attacking role.

There are, no doubt, many unforgivable omissions in this list. The only thing that seems certain is that – club records and sub-continental fortunes aside – the current QPR team has some illustrious forbears to live up to in its pursuit, not just of promotion, but of extreme second-tier excellence. Ian Winwood/Mirror - Why QPR fans should be prepared for months of torment before planning their promotion party
- Last week a mate of mine sent me a message via Facebook inviting me to a party. My friend lives in New York and works for the New York Rangers ice hockey team at Madison Square Garden. My friend though is a Londoner, and in a nice piece of symmetry supports this city’s Rangers, QPR.

The party is set to take place in May and is set to honour Queen’s Park Rangers’ promotion to the Premier League. The invite requested I R.S.V.P., so I did. I emailed back with the words ‘you arrogant b*****d.’

Since being invited to the Super Hoops’ promotion party six and a half months hence, the Hoops haven’t been quite so super. On Saturday the West London club drew nil-nil at home to Norwich City, while on Tuesday they played out the same score away at Swansea City. QPR still sit atop the Championship pile, but only two points separates them from second place Cardiff City.

Assuming that my friend, who likes a drink, might enjoy a chilled glass of Schadenfreude I emailed him just to make sure he’d clocked his club’s relatively slow week. In reply he was uncommonly testy.

Why? Well, perhaps because the pressure that surrounds possible promotion had already begun to kick in.

As it happens, the team that I support also ply their trade – for now at least – in the Championship. In my years supporting Barnsley I have seen my club promoted four times and relegated twice.

I speak from experience when I say that I’ve found the campaigns that culminated with promotion far more stressful than those that ended with an exit from the other end of the table.

Of course when promotion is secured it is the most wonderful of things. But the 46 games it takes to get there, well, they’re something else entirely.

In August of 1996 Barnsley began their season with five consecutive wins - a run that surprised everyone, probably even the team themselves. At that point the Tykes had never played football in England’s top division, but the start was so good and the footballing so graceful – this was the period when the fans began singing “it’s just like watching Brazil” – that even the most snake-bitten of fans, of which we have plenty, couldn’t help but wonder whether this might just be Our Season.

The first defeat came in game number six, coincidentally at home to Queens Park Rangers. On that day I happened to be in Belgium interviewing Metallica and I learned the result from James Hetfield’s guitar technician, himself a Sheffield Wednesday fan. I remember being amazed by how much that defeat felt like the end of the season, if not the world.

Throughout that whole of the 1996-97 campaign Barnsley did not fall lower than fifth place. The club gave me one of the most intense moments of my footballing life when on the 21st of December they scored an 87th minute winner against Sheffield United at Brammal Lane that ensured that ours was the name that sat atop the table on Christmas Day. Walking away from the ground, I remember thinking, We can do this.

And we did. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, on the last home game of the season Barnsley beat Bradford City 2-0 to secure promotion to the top flight for the first time in the club’s then 110 year history. As Clint Marcelle slotted home the second goal just seconds before the end of the game I remember looking around Oakwell and seeing a stadium that had lost its mind.

That image is my one abiding memory from that magical season, and because of that I remember it as being nine months that I enjoyed immensely.

But, really, I know that this wasn’t the case. It was a miserable, fretful time. Why? Because the possibility of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is the worst kind of defeat there is.

Queens Park Rangers still look like a squad and an organisation destined from promotion. But unless the team win the title by 20 clear points – as Bolton did in 1997 – then the fear that they may fail will haunt the thoughts of Super Hoops’ fans much more than the expectation that they will succeed.

The promotion party that my friend in New York is planning will, if it comes to pass, be a hell of a bash. But the months between then and now will be no fun at all.

In football, as in life, happiness is often remembered rather than experienced - Mirror

EADT 24 - Keane Confirms Derry Was Close to Joining Blues

Boss Roy Keane has confirmed that QPR midfielder Shaun Derry was close to joining the Blues in the summer. TWTD was first to reveal that Town were targeting the 32-year-old then-Crystal Palace captain when he was about to become a free agent back in May.

Keane revealed that Derry was at Portman Road and the move was all but done, a scenario he alluded to earlier in the season. The Blues boss says Derry is the sort of player you need in the Championship: “He was here, we wanted to sign him, he wanted to sign, but we never did the deal.

“They are the type of players that I think you need to try and get out of this league, even though our younger players are doing well. The John Eustaces, the Lee Carsleys, you need them.

“I’m not surprised when I see where QPR are with people like Shaun Derry in their team. He knows I’m a fan of his anyway. I had a good chat with him in the summer and I was disappointed we didn’t get the deal done. He’s knows the Championship very well, he knows the game.”

Derry’s not the greatest passer of the ball but Keane says he does a lot of the hard midfield graft and knows the ins and outs of the division: “The Championship isn’t necessarily about passing, it’s about being streetwise with your team-mates, the opposition, with the officials. Shaun’s good like that.

“But you miss out sometimes and there’s no point in crying over spilt milk. He wasn’t the only one we missed out on, he wasn’t the only one who wanted to sign. The club weren’t prepared to do a deal but, as they say, that’s life.”

The Town manager says he’s not too upset by the failure to add experienced players in the close season: “I’m not frustrated. There was a decision made over the summer that we wouldn’t be bringing in these experienced boys and again we’re a little bit dependent on the loan market with Jack coming in, Jake, Andros and Darren O’Dea. They’re all good players and we should be grateful we’ve got them into the club.

“There’s always that little bit of doubt when you lack players who are streetwise and know the Championship inside out.

“Frustration would be too strong. I was disappointed at the time when we missed out on Shaun, but I think any manager is when you’ve missed out on a player you think you’re getting who will help the club, whether it’s a Derry or a Carsley or a Kilbane, whoever it might be.”

Keane says the squad also lacks a bit of know-how due to the number of summer departures: “For Steady we got a decent offer and the club accepted it. I was fine with that, but we lost a bit of experience.

“Having said that, we brought in Márton Fülöp and Mark Kennedy, although obviously Sparky’s injured so we’ve not had that run of games with him.

“It’s not just about their footballing talent but their experience. Even the likes of Garvs and Alex Bruce, as much as you can say it was good business for the club, we’re missing players who have played 200 or 300 games.

“Jon Walters, David and Richard Wright too, even though ultimately we didn’t want to hold onto them. We got good offers and some of their contracts were up and we wanted to change the dynamics of the squad, but I wouldn’t have predicted that we’d have lost that many players.

“However, I’d still make the same changes tomorrow, but we didn’t get the one or two experienced players we were after in the summer for one reason or another.”

The Town manager is pleased with his youngsters but says that the volume of games can take its toll: “The likes of young Luke Hyam have done well over the last few weeks but I keep saying that these young boys will have to be taken out.

“Not due to the physical side, they can run all day, but the mental side of playing Saturday-Tuesday, Saturday-Tuesday. It’s difficult for top players, let alone young boys learning their trade.”

Keane was pleased with another of his youngsters at Watford in midweek: “Ronan Murray did well the other night but that was as a substitute. We can’t start young Ronan up against two big, strong centre-halves for Forest who have played a lot of games.

“You saw Murray when we played Tottenham down here and he’s got the heart the size of a lion, but at this moment in time he’s more of a substitute, physically he still has to do a bit more.

“That said, the other night he looked more likely to score than anybody and credit to the boy for that. Same when he came on at Exeter. We can talk about what he lacks, but he gets in the right areas and he’s tenacious.”

Keane, who says he hopes owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg understand why he wanted players such as Derry, believes all bosses appreciate what these seasoned campaigners can bring to the table: “Every manager would like one or two experienced players, not necessarily for what they do on the pitch but in a dressing room situation before a game or at half-time.

“We’re depending on one or two of the younger players but that’s the way it’s panned out and maybe our role here is to help these younger boys become better players. Whether that can get us out of this league is a big ask.

“Saying that, the kids might surprise us. The kids are capable of bouncing back after the disappointment of the last few games. People like Luke, who has been given a rest in the last week, Tom Eastman’s played four games for us and done reasonably well, young Troy, Murray, Wickham, Reggie.

“We might look back and say this has been the making of them, even with the disappointments. As I keep saying, as much as we had a decent start, there will be blips along the way and it’s how you deal with the blips.” Twtd

Goal.com/Ramy Ayari - QPR midfielder Adel Taarabt threatening to quit Moroccan national team
Playmaker says he was disrespected by his technical staff in Tanzania

Morocco midfielder Adel Taarabt is no longer interested in responding favorably to call-ups from the Atlas Lions, after feeling disrespected by caretaker boss Dominique Cuperly.

Cuperly opted not to utilize the Queens Park Rangers man during the last match of 2012 AFCON qualifying against Tanzania, as his side went on to register a 1-0 victory.

"This season I think I’m going to stop playing for the national team," Taarabt told Le Matin.

"I want to concentrate on my club because the national team hasn’t respected me and since I don’t want to hut it then I’m just going to pull back and let other youngster take my place."

He added: “The fact that I was called up and didn’t play doesn’t sit well with me at all and since I have a personality that makes me want to always play and now I’m not playing, I’m going to step back.

"Last time, I traveled for 22 hours by plane and in the end I didn’t play and nobody explained why. I took this decision with my family. I don’t want to respond favorably to the FRMF call-up to face Northern Ireland on the 17th of November."

The news has come as a shock in the north African country where Taarabt is highly regarded, not only for his skills but also for his loyalty - especially during the failed 2010 AFCON/World Cup qualifying campaign when many stars, including Marouane Chamakh, refused to play for the Atlas Lions at one point or another for unconvincing reasons. Paul Warburton/Fulham Chronicle - QPR boss Neil Warnock not bothered by Marcello Lippi rumours
- QPR boss Neil Warnock has laughed off the threat Italian legend Marcello Lippi is waiting to steal his job should Rs win promotion to the Premiership.
- Former chairman Flavio Briatore dropped a bombshell this week when he reportedly claimed the man who won the 2006 World Cup for Italy is ‘a dream’ for the team topping the Championship by two points.
- Although Briatore has no official clout, he and Formula I pal Bernie Ecclestone are still the club’s major shareholders and are understood to be pumping around £700,000 a month into Loftus Road.
- "If we were to get into the Premier League, I have a dream: Marcello Lippi as coach," Briatore told Italian magazine Chi.
- But Warnock reckons he would walk into a job tomorrow should the fanciful notion become fact.
- "I take this with a pinch of salt if I’m honest," said Warnock. "Worried? My stock’s never been higher. And I get on well with Flavio when we chat once a week or so.
- "He has given me his views on the team but he understands I make the decisions – and he’s happy with that."

- Briatore hired and fired nine managers in three years before he quit in February after a rough ride from fans to go with a team facing the threat of relegation

Daily Mail/Mel Henderson - Arsenal and QPR in talks over loan move for the Gunners' teenage midfielder Jay Emmanuel-Thomas
- Championship leaders QPR want to reinforce their squad with the loan capture of Arsenal teenager Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.
- Manager Neil Warnock is in negotiations with counterpart Arsene Wenger to see if a deal can be struck for the 19-year-old midfielder.
- Agreement could even be reached in time for Emmanuel-Thomas to be included in Rangers' squad for Friday night's live-on-Sky clash at bottom club Bristol City.
- Warnock's men remain top of the table but have seen their lead eroded to just two points after a run of just one win and three goalless draws in their last four outings.
- The young Londoner was the Gunners' FA Youth Cup-winning captain in 2009 but has so far made just two senior appearances.
- He started the Gunners' FA Cup fourth round defeat at Stoke in January this year and was a late substitute in the 2-0 Carling Cup defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.
- Emmanuel-Thomas, of whom Wenger has said 'He can play anywhere', gained valuable experience in two loan spells at Championship level last season.
- He started the campaign with Premiership-bound Blackpool, scoring once in 12 appearances, and finished it with Doncaster, for whom he played 14 times and netted five goals. Dail Mail

Metro - Neil Warnock: QPR's home form is not enough to reach Premier League
Neil Warnock admits Queens Park Rangers’ rock-solid home form will not be enough to sustain their Premier League promotion bid.

The Hoops have made Loftus Road a fortress this term – winning four and drawing two of their home games in the Championship they have yet to concede a single goal.

But they also remain unbeaten on their travels, with eye-catching 3-0 wins at Warnock’s beloved Sheffield United and Roy Keane’s Ipswich the pick of their four victories.

And the QPR boss, whose team are now two points clear at the top of the table following Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at Swansea, is adamant there is no complacency in West London.

‘We have an excellent home record, it’s great not to have conceded at Loftus Road so far but if anything we’ve been better away,’ he said.

‘But the lads don’t need me to help them keep their feet on the ground, they are not daft and they’re a good bunch.’ Tuesday’s stalemate followed last Saturday’s goalless draw at home to Norwich while Millwall, the only other visiting side to leave Loftus Road with a point this season, also held Rangers 0-0 last month.

Playmaker Akos Buzsaky had to come off against the Canaries with a knee problem, and with Alejandro Faurlin only recently available after a hamstring injury, Warnock believes injuries to his creative players help explain his team’s failure to score in three of their last four games.

There was better news for him on Tuesday as a scan revealed Hungary international Buzsaky had sustained no serious damage and will soon return to training, while Faurlin played 90 minutes against Swansea.

Warnock re-signed Gavin Mahon on a month’s contract this week to widen his midfield options but will want Buzsaky, Faurlin and Adel Taarabt operating alongside each other again.

‘We were a bit unlucky to lose Akos and we could not play Ali [Faurlin], so we lost a lot of creativity in midfield on Saturday,’ said Warnock.

‘Akos is a big loss, he’s done extremely well. We had enough opportunities to score anyway, though, and should have done against Norwich.’

The Hoops manager added the likes of top scorer Jamie Mackie and former Crystal Palace favourites Shaun Derry and Clint Hill to his squad over the summer, and the trio have proved key additions.

They are just three of a number of crucial signings the 61-year-old has made since taking charge in March, although he has had to do without forwards Rob Hulse and Tommy Smith for most of the season.

‘The squad is a lot better now,’ he added. ‘We have Rob stepping up his training this week after injury.

‘Tommy has not been able to start a game and there are one or two others to come back. We may even have a full squad this weekend.’

And will he add more new faces in January? It appears he will get funds to back up his title bid.

Warnock added: ‘The board have been great, they’ve really backed me. I have to get to Christmas and see where we are then, and what the situation is [regarding spending].’
