Sunderland 3-1 QPR: Sunday Mirror match report
Published 21:30 24/03/12 By Brian McNally Recommend

Not even the madcap antics of axed Queen’s Park Rangers club captain Joey Barton could take the shine off a scintillating Sunderland display.

Barton tried to steal the Black Cats’ thunder with a series of provocative gestures recalling Newcastle’s 5-1 win here last season as he warmed up in the first half.

The former Magpies midfielder’s attention-seeking actions only served to fire up the crowd after a quiet start to the game.

But by the final whistle the Scouse wind-up merchant – totally ignored yesterday by Mark Hughes – could be seen yawning on the bench as QPR were torn apart by a James McClean-inspired Sunderland.

Goals by Nicklas Bendtner, man-of-the-match McClean and eight-goal top scorer Stephane Sessegnon gave the rampant Black Cats a comfortable cushion against 10-man Rangers before Taye Taiwo pulled one back.

To complete an unhappy day for Hughes and Rangers after their shock midweek comeback win against Liverpool, they will again be without Djibril Cisse through suspension.

Cisse was dismissed for a crazy two-footed challenge on substitute Fraizer Campbell – his second in QPR colours after being sent off in the home defeat by Wolves last month.

Hughes is now set to lose Cisse for four games and said: “It was a crazy challenge by Cisse. I wasn’t too delighted by the tackle.

“But we were poor all round today.”

Hughes claimed he did not see Barton’s gestures to the home fans, saying: “I wasn’t aware, I was watching the game.”

QPR owner Tony Fernandes tweeted: “The manager can do nothing if players keep getting sent off and booked. Mark Hughes is the right guy and he has my support.”

Classy Sunderland were always in command despite losing John O’Shea early on with a calf injury that rules him out of the FA Cup quarter-final reply against Everton on Tuesday.

Manager Martin O’Neill said: “John’s loss is a blow but I am really pleased with the win. It sets us up nicely for the cup. James McClean was magnificent. He scored a goal and had a hand in the other two. It was a good way to celebrate his new contract. “

Sunderland broke through four minutes before the break. McClean’s cross allowed Bendtner to evade former Black Cat Anton Ferdinand and Taiwo to head beyond Paddy Kenny for his third goal in four games.

Cisse’s red card in the 55th minute – seconds after Craig Gardner hit the bar – ensured there would be no way back for woeful Rangers.

It was fitting that McClean sealed their fate. His first effort was charged down by Ferdinand but he showed composure to force home the fifth goal of his burgeoning career in English football.

Sessegnon clinched it six minutes later after David Vaughan had been played in by a clever McClean flick.

Not even Taiwo’s well-struck free-kick could supply any consolation for a QPR side now back in the bottom three.

And bad boy Barton will go away to consider whether he has any future at the club and possibly to contemplate an FA charge. Mirror

QPR Official Site - HUGHES: 'WE GAVE OURSELVES NO CHANCE'

Posted on: Sat 24 Mar 2012

Mark Hughes bemoaned his side's defensive performance, as QPR slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Trailing 1-0 to Nicklas Bendtner's first half header, bad turned to worse for the R's early in the second half when Djibril Cisse was shown a straight red card for a two-footed lunge on Fraizer Campbell.

James McClean and Stephane Sessegnon added two more goals for the hosts soon after, before Taye Taiwo notched a stunning consolation with a trademark free-kick.

A dejected Hughes told www.qpr.co.uk: "We didn't perform anything like the level I expect.

"Maybe the emotion and the energy we expended on Wednesday was a factor to a certain degree, but the level of performance was well below par.

"We never gave ourselves a chance to win the game.

"Defensively we were very poor and we just didn't do the right things in key moments of the game.

"We made it very difficult for ourselves."

On the sending off, Hughes added: "Once again, we've lost a player because of a really poor challenge.

"It was a completely wrong challenge to make.

"It affected us greatly today and it will affect us over the next few weeks too.

"It wouldn't have made any difference to the result today though, because we were so poor."

Hughes added: "It was a poor performance all round. We've just got to respond now and give ourselves a boost ahead of the next game.

"If we want to get out of this situation we need to be a lot, lot better."

Hughes backed as QPR crash again

(AFP) – 2 hours ago

SUNDERLAND — Mark Hughes received a vote of confidence from Queens Park Rangers owner Tony Fernandes, as the Londoners slumped into the relegation zone with a dismal 3-1 loss at Sunderland.

QPR had hoped to build on the momentum generated by their remarkable 3-2 win over Liverpool in midweek as they travelled to the Stadium of Light to face a Sunderland side beaten by struggling Blackburn in their last outing.

But instead it was an all too familiar story for Hughes and QPR as Djibril Cisse was sent off for a wild lunge on Fraizer Campbell to leave the Hoops -- trailing 1-0 at the time -- with a mountain to climb.

Predictably, Hughes' team never looked like finding a way back into the match as Sunderland goals from Nicklas Bendtner, James McClean and Stephane Sessesgnon sealed a comfortable win for Martin O'Neill's men.

Taye Taiwo scored a late consolation for QPR with an eye-catching free-kick but could not stop QPR slipping into the bottom three with a daunting run-in awaiting them over the final weeks of the season.

Nevertheless Hughes -- who controversially replaced Neil Warnock in January -- was given backing from QPR owner Fernandes following the defeat.

"The manager can do nothing if players keep getting sent off and booked," Fernandes said on Twitter. "Mark Hughes is right guy and he has my support."

But Fernandes was scathing of the disciplinary problems which have dogged Rangers throughout Hughes short reign.

Cisse's dismissal -- the second of his QPR career -- was the third red card since Hughes took over and means the former France international will now miss four games through suspension.

"I can't believe this. Red cards. Nothing to do with luck . Very frustrating," Fernandes wrote.

"Crucial is for us to win home games. But boy we do make it difficult," he said in another Tweet, adding: "This is the first time I'm generally pissed off. We got to bloody keep 11 players on the pitch." AFP

JACOB Murtagh - QPR boss counting the cost of 'crazy' Cisse

MARK Hughes will be without Djibril Cisse for four matches after the QPR striker's 'crazy' red card in this afternoon's defeat at Sunderland.

The French frontman was sent-off for the second time in four games for a two-footed tackle on Fraizer Campbell just before the hour mark.

Rangers went on to lose 3-1 despite Taye Taiwo's consolation, and boss Hughes admits he's counting the cost of Cisse's moment of madness.

He said: “It was a crazy challenge by Djibril, he knows that.

“It compromised us, but even if he stayed on the pitch I don't think we would've won.

“He's going to be missing for four of the remaining eight matches and that's going to hurt us.

“He's scored three in six games and when he's on the pitch he's been excellent for us.

“But we can't dwell on spilt milk. I have to focus on the personnel that's available.”

Djibril Cisse saw red, as ten-man QPR went down to a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

In the 250th league game of Mark Hughes's managerial career, Rangers went a goal down just four minutes before the break, after Nicklas Bendtner headed home James McClean's cross.

The R's task was made all-the-harder when Cisse picked up his second red card in just five appearances for the Hoops - that after a two-footed challenge on Fraizer Campbell on 54 minutes.

The home side duly capitalised on that numerical advantage.

First, the lively James McClean struck a Sunderland second thanks to a deflection off Nedum Onuoha, before Stephane Sessegnon tucked away a David Vaughan centre from close range.

Taye Taiwo curled home a free-kick - and a scant consolation for Rangers - on 79 minutes.

Hughes made two changes to his Rangers side for the trip to the North East.

Armand Traore was forced to sit out with a hamstring complaint, while Joey Barton dropped to the substitute's bench.

The duo were replaced by Taiwo and Jamie Mackie - scorer of the R's dramatic last-gasp winner versus Liverpool in midweek - respectively.

Paddy Kenny was in goal for the Hoops, behind a back four of Luke Young, Onuoha, stand-in skipper Anton Ferdinand and Taiwo.

Mackie began from the right-hand side of midfield, with Shaun Derry and Samba Diakite in the middle and Adel Taarabt starting from the left.

Cisse partnered Bobby Zamora up front.

The opening stanza proved to be a tentative one, with neither side giving an inch inside the opening minutes.

The home side carved open their first chance on ten minutes.

McClean's teasing corner from the right looked to be to a tee for a host of queuing Sunderland bodies at the back post, but Young was on hand to clear the danger.

Three minutes later, Sessegnon twisted and turned both Young and Diakite before crossing for Jack Colback, who saw his effort blocked by Taiwo in the box.

But Colback soon went closer for the hosts.A long ball saw Bendtner flick a header on to the Mackems midfielder, before his low drive clipped the left-hand post before going wide.

QPR fashioned their first opportunity in the 16th minute. Diakite found Young down the left, before his cross was headed just over the bar by Mackie.

Six minutes later, the R's had another attempt when Zamora played a pass into Cisse on the edge of the box, before his shot deflected comfortably up into the hands of Simon Mignolet.

Moments later, Sessegnon saw an effort whistle just wide of the left-hand post, following good work from Craig Gardner from the right.

Bendtner then diverted McClean's dangerous corner from the right just wide of the post on 25 minutes, before Zamora fired an effort just over the bar seconds later.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 41st minute.

The ever-threatening McClean played architect, sending over a delicious cross from the left that was expertly turned home by the head of Bendtner from close range.

Rangers almost responded just a minute later. Flowing football from the R's ended in Taiwo crossing for Cisse from the left, who saw an effort deflected wide of the target.

With Diakite already on a booking, Hughes decided to replace the Mali international with Akos Buzsaky seven minutes after the half-time break.

Sunderland, meanwhile, went exceptionally close to adding a second goal when Gardner rattled the crossbar with a bullet free-kick.

But QPR's chances of clawing their way back into this contest were dealt a major blow in the 64 minutes, after Cisse was handed a straight red card.

The French ace went in for a challenge with Campbell and appeared to catch the former Manchester United man with a two-footed challenge.

Referee Mr Jones took little time to make up his mind on a decision, reaching for a straight red card.

A man to the good, Sunderland began to make their numerical advantage count by creating a number of chances.

On 64 minutes, McClean saw his shot blocked over the target, following Gardner's low centre from the right.

McClean was proving to be a constant thorn in the R's side and he went close with an effort just a minute later, dragging his shot just wide of the right-hand post after a neat passage of build-up play from the Mackems.

But McClean wouldn't pass at the third time of asking, doubling Sunderland's lead 20 minutes from time.

Onuoha misjudged a ball forward and, when McClean saw an initial effort blocked by Young, his second attempt took a deflection before nestling into the back of the net.

The hosts added a third on 76 minutes. Onuoha was dispossessed in his own half before the ball was eventually played out to Vaughan down the left, whose telling cross was guided home by Sessegnon.

Rangers struck a consolation with 11 minutes left on the clock.

Michael Turner was penalised for a foul on Zamora, before Taiwo stepped up to curl home the subsequent free-kick from just outside the box.

QPR lose Djibril Cissé to red card and three points to Sunderland

Djibril Cissé was sent off for the second time in his brief Queens Park Rangers career as his side self-destructed at Sunderland. The visitors were trailing to Nicklas Bendtner's 41st-minute header when the Frenchman launched himself into a two-footed tackle on Fraizer Campbell and was shown a straight red card by the referee Mike Jones, and his side went on to lose 3-1.

Cissé will receive a four-match ban to add to the three he served following his dismissal against Wolves, after what proved to be a costly fifth appearance for the club.

The striker, who had a loan spell at the Stadium of Light earlier in his career, was not the only old boy to suffer on his return to Wearside, with Nedum Onuoha's error allowing James McClean to celebrate his new contract by adding a second 20 minutes from time. Stéphane Sessègnon made sure of the points six minutes later and, although the defender Taye Taiwo pulled a goal back with a stunning late free-kick, the home side ran out comfortable winners in front of a crowd of 37,128.

Mark Hughes said: "That's going to hurt us because when we have been able to keep him on the pitch he has been excellent for us. He has scored something like three in five, but we can't really dwell on it.

"It's spilled milk from our point of view. We have got to get on with it. I have got to focus on the personnel who are available to me. It's a crazy challenge by Djibril, and he knows that.''

Martin O'Neill's joy will have been tempered, however, by the sight of John O'Shea limping off before the break with an injury that could jeopardise the defender's chances of playing in Tuesday's FA Cup quarter-final replay against Everton.

The Sunderland manager said: "I am just delighted to have won the game. It keeps the momentum going. Forty points on the board – if you had given me that in December I would have taken your arms off, for the end of the season, never mind anything else."

The win took the Black Cats into eighth place in the table, only two points adrift of Liverpool in seventh, and sent QPR back into the relegation zone.

O'Neill added: "It was a surprise at Liverpool being beaten [by Wigan], but from our own viewpoint, it sets us up for Tuesday night, at least in terms of confidence."

QPR owner Tony Fernandes Saturday criticised the lengthy adjournment of John Terry's racial abuse court case as the furore continues to hang over his club.
Fernandes, speaking to AFP ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix, kept an open mind on whether alleged victim Anton Ferdinand should shake the hand of Chelsea's Terry when the teams meet again on April 29.

But he said the case's adjournment until July 9 -- after Euro 2012, which wraps up eight days earlier -- had made life difficult for all parties. Terry denies racially abusing Ferdinand during a game in October.
"Let's wait till the day and see what happens," Fernandes, who also owns the Caterham Formula One team, said of the handshake when QPR play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
"The court case should have been done by now," he added. "To be fair to John Terry, to be fair on Anton, to be fair on the paying public. It shouldn't have been delayed."

The case has had wide-ranging repercussions. In February, Fabio Capello resigned as England manager after the Football Association (FA) stripped Terry of the national team's armband.

I could drop Barton admits QPR boss
Published 21:30 23/03/12 By Neil McLeman

.

QPR manager Mark Hughes has warned that Joey Barton's status as club captain will NOT stop him being dropped at Sunderland.

Hughes claimed on Friday he had yet to decide on his starting XI for Saturday's visit to the Stadium of Light, but he did admit Rangers were a better team after a lacklustre Barton was subbed against Liverpool on Wednesday.

The controversial midfielder, who has only missed three games through suspension this season, has since used Twitter to hit back at the fans who booed him off the Loftus Road pitch.

After QPR pulled clear of the drop zone with their stunning comeback win in midweek, Hughes could decide he needs Barton's battling skills as they seek their first back-to-back Premier League victories of the season.

But the Welshman admitted he was delaying naming his team as he mulled over whether to stick with a winning formula.

"Irrespective of your standing in the squad, you still have to perform," said the Hoops boss. "I always reserve the right to make a judgement based on what I see at any given time.

"Will the decision to drop Barton be more difficult because he is captain? Not really. I pick teams I feel will win Premier League matches. I have to make sure the balance of the team is right and the energy levels of the team is right.
"I will make judgements based on those factors and a number of others. I don't base my selections on individual personalities - it is about the make-up of the team and the team I feel will be best prepared and best capable to win a Premier League team."
Hughes will not ban Barton from Twitter, but said his skipper had to accept the criticism which is a by-product of his notoriety.

"When you're a high-profile player, it comes with the territory," the manager continued. "He's got quite a few sayings. Most of them I've heard before, a few he's possibly made up himself.

"You get the gist of it. He's a well-read guy, and tries to illustrate his feeling. He gives people a platform to respond and he enjoys that.
"At the moment, and certainly the other evening, he didn't play to the standards we know he has. He has held his hands up. But Joey has a part to play from now to the end of the season."
England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips was dropped on Wednesday after Hughes admitted he "has been struggling for form".
Hughes added: "Some players at times need to be taken out of the fray and given time to recuperate. Shaun will be a big player for us from now until the end of the season."
Djibril Cisse will be raring to go against another of his former clubs, after scoring QPR's equaliser against Liverpool.

And after the Clint Hill goal that wasn't at Bolton, Hughes hopes his team's luck has changed before they face Arsenal and Manchester United in their next two games.

"We were disappointed after Bolton because we felt we lost the game as a direct consequence of things out of our control," he said.

"We were making our own luck against Liverpool by the manner of our performance and our strength in the last period. We have to replicate that in the games we have left."

"... 3 Lucky for everyone that I'm not at Loftus Road any more!

It's a good job I wasn't at QPR the other night when Shaun Derry scored his first goal in five years. I've been saying for years I'll show my backside on the town hall steps when he scores. I was pleased for him, he deserved that for being such a good pro. It was nice to see him and Jamie Mackie, two of the old guard, turn their game against Liverpool around. The crowd always respond to Jamie, he's such an enthusiastic player, full of zest and I wasn't surprised he had an impact.

The other big midweek result at the bottom was Blackburn beating Sunderland. I was pleased for Steve Kean. He really has come under fire this season but whatever people say about the owners, they have shown support for him and are now getting the reward. It would have been much easier to have given in to the mob. I wasn't surprised by their win. Blackburn trained at our ground a few days earlier Steve was making a change in routine and I had a good chat with him. They looked in really good spirits and Bradley Orr, who played under me at QPR, said they are a really good group of boys and responded well to the manager..." Neil Warnock/The Independent

Premier League: 1 Youth Player Each Side Will Promote Next Season...

"...QPR: Bruno Andrade, Midfielder

Queens Park Rangers presents a special case for this list, as the club lost its academy status after filing for administration back in 2001. Since then, the QPR brass has tried desperately to retrofit its Center of Excellence located in Harlington, but its petition to the Premier League was denied due to the lack of an indoor training facility.

Still, there is young talent to be had for Super Hoops. A product of the Center of Excellence, Bruno Miguel Carvalho Andrade has already made two appearances for QPR, but with the club’s recent acquisitions in January, was moved back to the reserves.

Andrade has been with the West London club since he was 13 years old, impressing many with his wide-play as a youth squad member. He was loaned out to Aldershot recently for experience, but only saw one appearance.

If a spot opens up with the first team on the flank, the 19-year-old Andrade wouldn’t be the worst choice for QPR as they battle relegation. Bleacher Report

The Queens Park Rangers forward Jamie Mackie has backed Joey Barton to overcome the ridicule heaped on him by the club's supporters during Wednesday's 3-2 victory over Liverpool.

Although that match ended in euphoria for the home crowd, their mood was very different in the 62nd minute, when the hosts were trailing 1-0 and Barton was substituted by Mackie. Barton was booed off the pitch by large sections of the Loftus Road faithful, who were evidently dissatisfied with the captain's error-strewn performance.

"You don't like to see that but Joey's an immensely strong character so I don't think we need to worry about it," said Mackie. "He's our captain, our leader. He never hides, whether he's having a good or a bad game. He's probably got a bigger part to play than anyone [in QPR's fight against relegation]. He wants us to win games whether he is banging the goals in or not and we are lucky to have him."

Barton later took to Twitter to confess that his display had been "awful" and "the worst of my career" but criticised the home fans for turning on him. It is worth wondering whether his prolific use of Twitter intensifies the scorn directed at him when he plays badly, as his willingness to expound his views on a whole array of subjects seems to encourage others to voice their views of him.

It is also likely that supporters feel justified in demanding more from him because he has described himself as one of England's best midfielders and because, if the brags that the Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Karl Henry claims Barton made during QPR's win over Wolves in September are accurate, he is one of the highest-paid players at the club, earning 80,000-per-week.

Yet another motive for the booing could have been to convey a message to the club's manager, Mark Hughes, who has consistently picked Barton despite a series of inconsequential performances. The player hinted on Twitter that his form has been compromised by having to occasionally play on the right-hand side of midfield rather than in the centre but that position is scarcely alien enough to convince fans that it qualifies as a reasonable excuse for mislaying as many passes as he did against Liverpool.

Nor was it only against Liverpool that he has struggled. Barton's form has been poor ever since he got sent off in January's 2-1 defeat by Norwich City, yet he has continually been chosen ahead of the likes of Mackie, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Akos Buzsaky. A significant number of Rangers fans seem to think Hughes should alter this selection policy.

But the manager, like Mackie, suggested he retains his confidence in Barton, stressing that the player has "a big part to play" in the season's run-in. Barton, unsurprisingly, agreed: "form is temporary, class is permanent," he tweeted pointedly.

While Barton was aggrieved by the derision directed at him, it did not detract from his delight at Wednesday's result. Mackie said the captain was "the happiest player in the dressing room" after the victory over Liverpool. The comeback has reinforced the players' conviction that they can remain afloat in the Premier League this season despite their daunting fixture list. Currently two points clear of the relegation zone but having played a game more than 18th-placed Bolton Wanderers, QPR must take on all of the top five teams in the league in their remaining nine matches.

"With the talent we've got in the dressing room, it doesn't matter who we're playing," said Mackie. "We just needed that little bit of belief, that little bit of confidence. It doesn't matter how good you are as a player, confidence goes a massive way. To come back from 2-0 down against a team packed with quality like Liverpool, it's got to give everyone belief in what we're trying to do. We've got a great chance of picking up results now."

"We're under no illusions. We're right in the mixer and we could get relegated. We've put ourselves in that position and were the only people who can get ourselves out of it. We can't feel sorry for ourselves.

"If we'd lost against Liverpool the doom-mongers would have been out saying we're down already. We've got nine games left, a very, very tough run-in. But every single game we're going to rack up points and definitely give it a good shot."

Loan Deadline Day Out..Hogan Ephraim Joins Bristol City and Rowan Vine Joins Gillingham

VINE: "IT'S A MASSIVE OPPORTUNITY"
Posted on: Thu 22 Mar 2012

Gills new boy Rowan Vine is relishing the chance to be part of the push for the play-offs after arriving at MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Thursday.

The 29-year-old has signed on loan for the rest of the season from Premier League QPR, and he is hoping to kickstart his career here in Kent.

Vine was transferred for £2.5m when he joined Birmingham from Luton, but his career has stalled after breaking his leg in 2008 - and he can't wait to get involved with the Gills.

"It's been a while since I've been part of a squad and preparing for games, so I'm looking forward to it," he exclusively told the club's official website.

"I had a bad injury in 2008, which really knocked me out of my stride. I was doing well at QPR and it took me a while to get back and since then I've had a bad run of injuries and stuff like that, so it's been frustrating.

"It's a massive opportunity for me. I've been fit for a while, in an injury sense. I haven't played a lot of games competitively which has been frustrating, waiting and seeing what chances will come for me.

"Obviously I'm was looking and seeing that there's less than 10 games to go in the season and wondering if I was going to get any more games this season. I haven't played since September but when this opportunity came up, I was delighted."

Vine's most prolific spell came during his time with Luton, and he is hoping to get on the goal trail once more with the Gills - and help the club get into the play-offs.

"I always give 100% - that's the minimum requirement I think," he added. "I always try my best and give everything I've got and I like being involved in football games - I like being on the ball, I like trying to create chances and trying to take chances. I want to be out there and enjoy myself. I like the ball to feet and I try my best at everything.

"When I spoke to them and had a look, I think we've got a massive chance of the getting into the play-offs. Results have been good apart from the other night, which was obviously a disappointing one for the boys here.

"But there's nine games to go, we've got a big challenge. I've trained with the boys and they are up for it.

"I've come here to be part of the squad and to see if I can bring something to the table in terms of helping them get into the play-offs and I'll be trying everything I can to achieve that." Gillingham

Jacob Murtagh/Chronicle - Hughes urges QPR to build on Liverpool win

MARK Hughes reckons QPR's dramatic victory over Liverpool could be a defining moment in their season.

Jamie Mackie's injury-time winner saw Rangers recover from 2-0 down to earn the points and climb out of the relegation zone.

And boss Hughes has urged his troops to build on their shock success.

He said: “It’s huge in terms of the belief and what we can take out of it.

“It could be a defining moment – we have to make sure it is. You hope for nights like this when things go for you. It’s a great night for everybody.

“It was important to get a goal back and from that point we sensed the build-up of momentum. The fans were fantastic – they sensed what was happening.

“I think everyone senses the emotion and the significance of this result. Hopefully people will look back and say ‘That night was the turning point’.” Fulham Chronicle

QPR boss defends Joey Barton after midfielder targeted by boo-boys

MARK Hughes leapt to the defence of skipper Joey Barton after he was booed off during QPR's 3-2 victory over Liverpool.

The midfielder was substituted just after the hour mark after a dismal display with the Rs trailing 1-0 at Loftus Road.

His replacement, Jamie Mackie, went on to score an injury-time winner to complete a stunning comeback for the hosts.

But boss Hughes insists his captain won't be affected by the tough treatment from his own fans.

He said: “Joey wasn't having the best of times. It wasn't happening for him so I decided to take him off.

“There might have been a few who felt the need to boo him.

“But he's strong and won't let it affect him. He's a big part of what we're doing.” Fulham Chronicle

QPR manager Hughes defends Barton

Manager Mark Hughes defended Joey Barton after the controversial midfielder was booed off by the home fans during QPR’s win against Liverpool.

Barton’s stock among the Loftus Road faithful has been steadily declining in recent weeks and he was barracked as he was substituted with Rangers trailing and seemingly destined for another defeat.

They fought back after Barton’s withdrawal and his replacement Jamie Mackie netted a dramatic late winner.

“Joey wasn’t having the best of times and a few maybe felt the need to boo him,” said Hughes.

“He’s very strong and it won’t affect him. He’ll play a big part in what we’re trying to do for the rest of the season. Tonight just wasn’t his night.

“Jamie when he comes on always gives you huge energy and I felt we needed that momentum.

“In fairness to Joey he’ll always want the ball and doesn’t hide. It just wasn’t happening for him.”

Hughes also revealed that Armand Traore, who was taken off at half-time, has a hamstring problem which does not look serious and will be assessed on Thursday. West London Sport

QPR OFFICIAL SITE - HUGHES: 'A GREAT NIGHT'

Posted on: Thu 22 Mar 2012

Mark Hughes heaped praise on his comeback kings, as Jamie Mackie's 90th minute strike sealed a remarkable 3-2 victory against Liverpool.

Trailing 2-0 to goals from Sebastian Coates and Dirk Kuyt, Rangers stunned the Carling Cup winners with three goals in a 13 minute purple patch.

Shaun Derry (77) started the comeback with his first goal in QPR colours, before Djibril Cisse drew the R's level four minutes from time.

Mackie - a replacement for Joey Barton early in the second half - completed the comeback at the death, to life the roof off Loftus Road.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Hughes said: "It's a great night for us.

"It's just the beginning for us. We know there are huge challenges that lie ahead, but this will give us an incredible lift."

He added: "At 2-0 down against a very accomplished side you think the game is beyond you.

"I thought their goal came against the run of play, so we made a few changes and thankfully it worked out for us.

"We had huge performances all over the pitch.

"The first goal from Shaun gave us incredible belief.

"He epitomised everything we were about in the comeback.

"I thought he was outstanding and really understood what we wanted him to do.

"Jamie always gives you everything and he did that when he came on. He kept a clear head for the goal, but in fairness to him, he's a top finisher, so I expected him to score and thankfully we did."

Hughes continued: "Each and every player gave me everything - Paddy made some outstanding saves at key times and he deserves huge credit for that.

"It probably won't make the headlines in the morning, but his saves were vital in the overall outcome of the football match.

"We started really slowly.

"We showed them too much respect and we looked like we were lacking confidence.

"But we steadily worked our way back in the game and in the end we weren't to be denied.

"We need to build on this now.

"The players understand what we're trying to do.

"We prepare meticulously week in, week out, and we've got our rewards in bucketloads tonight."

Hughes also praised the impact the Rangers supporters made throughout the 90 minutes, commenting: "The atmosphere was something special - the noise was incredible.

"The fans can see that we're progressing.

"They stuck by us all night long, even when things weren't going our way.

"We've given them something to shout about tonight, but we need to continue with this momentum now." QPR

QPR boss celebrates ‘defining momen
t’

Delighted QPR manager Mark Hughes believes his team’s stunning fightback against Liverpool could prove to be a turning point in their fortunes.

Rangers looked dead and buried at 2-0 down but scored three late goals, with Jamie Mackie’s injury-time winner giving them an incredible victory.

Mackie netted QPR's winner.

It was only their second league win under Hughes, who declared: “It’s huge in terms of the belief and what we can take out of it.

Hopefully people will look back and say ‘That night was the turning point’.”

The victory was a major boost to Rangers’ survival hopes – especially given their daunting run-in to the season.

Liverpool are one of several leading sides they will face before the end of the campaign, but Hughes remains confident they will get enough points to stay in the top flight.

“People write us off but they do that at their peril, because I know what we’ve got in the dressing room,” he said. West London Sport

Mark Hughes hails astonishing comeback by Queens Park Rangers

• Kenny Dalglish at loss to explain collapse
• QPR haul themselves out of relegation zone

Mark Hughes proclaimed the beginning of a successful battle against relegation after his Queens Park Rangers team performed an extraordinary late comeback to beat Liverpool 3-2 and clamber out of the bottom three.

QPR were dominated for long periods and conceded two goals in the second half before stunning Kenny Dalglish's side with three strikes in the final 13 minutes, with the decisive goal coming from Jamie Mackie in stoppage time. It gave the club their first win in two months, took them two points clear of the relegation zone – albeit having played a game more – and infused them with fresh optimism.

"It could be a defining moment of the season," said Hughes. "We have to make sure that it is. It's huge in terms of what we take out of the game. We were not to be denied in this game and showed desire, determination, drive and all the qualities that you need to get out of the situation that we're in. We could look back at this match at the end of the season and say that was when it all started to change for us."

Hughes admitted that he feared his side were on course for another defeat when Liverpool went into a deserved two-goal lead thanks to goals from Sebastian Coátes and Dirk Kuyt. However, Shaun Derry cut the deficit with a goal in the 77th minute to give Rangers new belief before Djibril Cissé and Mackie completed the turnaround. "At 2-0 you expect a team of the quality of Liverpool to close the game out and you thought maybe it was beyond us but we got a goal back and the momentum built," said Hughes. "The fans sensed it and were fantastic and we basically just rode the wave."

Dalglish was at a loss to account for his side's sudden collapse. "I can't explain it," he said. "There are no answers but we have to find answers." He rejected the suggestion that his team switched off mentally once they established a two-goal lead, preferring to invoke the pluck and luck of the home team, who enjoyed a stark reversal of fortune since their last outing, when they lost at Bolton after the officials wrongly ruled that a Clint Hill shot had not crossed the line. "The players never got what they deserved," said the Liverpool manager. "It's not a lack of concentration, give QPR some credit.Maybe the luck they never got at Bolton, they got it here."

One QPR player whose joy may have been tempered was the captain Joey Barton, who was booed off when replaced by Mackie in the 62nd minute following an inconsequential performance. Hughes insisted the hostility from the home support would not faze Barton. "In fairness to Joey, he wasn't having the best of times but heis a big enough personality to always demand the ball and want to be involved. But it wasn't happening so I decided to take him off."

Barton conceded via Twitter that he had been "awful" but criticised the fans for booing.

"Worst I've ever played in my career," he wrote. "But we WON.......and that's the most important thing. Onwards and upwards.

"Disappointed with fans booing, were [sic] meant to be in it together. They won't break me, guaranteed. I've been through much worse.

"Enough of the negative **** anyway. What a ******* result, great spirit shown by the boys and loyal fans tonight. Not the bells that booed."

Barton later posted: "Form is temporary, class is permanent." Guardian

Boss Dalglish stunned after Liverpool defeat

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish was almost lost for words after his team were beaten by QPR at Loftus Road.

Rangers were 2-0 down before three late goals gave them a dramatic victory and boosted their survival hopes.

Dalglish admitted: “I don’t think anybody saw it coming. The way we started the game was fantastic, with the passing and movement. The thing that was missing was a bit of luck in front of goal.

“At the start of the second half we got the goals and you couldn’t see them getting a goal.

Kenny's QPR verdict

Kenny Dalglish felt Liverpool were desperately unlucky in suffering a late 3-2 defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

Goals from Sebastian Coates and Dirk Kuyt put the Reds into the lead at Loftus Road, but Shaun Derry and Djibril Cisse drew the hosts level before Jamie Mackie scored an injury-time winner.

Dalglish conceded the next few days would be spent trying to find answers to why Liverpool let slip a two-goal lead, but felt the application of his players could not be faulted.

"I don't think anybody saw it coming," the boss told his post-match press conference. "I'm sure there was a fair bit of feeling before the game about how we'd approach it and how the players would react to qualifying for a semi-final.

"But I think the way they started the game was fantastic with the passing and the movement. The only thing that was missing was a bit of luck in front of goal.

Kenny's QPR verdict

"We came in (at half-time) at 0-0, but it could have been three or four easily.

"We started the second half and got the goal - a great goal for Seb. Then Dirk touched one in and to be fair you couldn't even see them (QPR) getting a goal.

"But maybe the luck they never got at Bolton 10 days ago, they got tonight in the last 20 minutes.

"There is not much more we can say. We need to find answers and make sure we're going to learn from it.

"For most of the game we were dominant. We were really creative, thoughtful and professional, but they've walked away with three points."

Asked if he felt the Liverpool players concentrated for 90 minutes, Dalglish said: "I think they did, yes.

"It's not a lack of concentration. You've got to give them (QPR) a bit of credit as well.

"We were so constructive in so many parts of our game tonight, but (from) a set play, a cross and then right at the death they've scored.

"We never got what we deserved, but it's a tough life I suppose."

Meanwhile, Dalglish confirmed Liverpool will need to assess the fitness of Martin Kelly and Charlie Adam after the pair picked up knocks at Loftus Road.

"It's just a kick he got on Sunday," the manager said of Kelly. "Charlie just twisted his knee a little bit, so we'll need to see how he is as well."

Mackie’s last-gasp winner stuns Liverpool

Jamie Mackie netted an injury-time winner as QPR boosted their survival hopes by staging an incredible late comeback at Loftus Road.

Sebastian Coates’ spectacular scissor-kick and Dirk Kuyt’s tap-in seemed to have condemned them to another defeat.

But three goals in the final 14 minutes left Liverpool stunned and gave Rangers only their second league victory under manager Mark Hughes.

Shaun Derry headed in Adel Taarabt’s corner before substitute Taye Taiwo crossed from the left for Djibril Cisse to head home an 86th-minute equaliser against his former club.

And Mackie – on as a substitute for Joey Barton, who was booed off – raced on to Luke Young’s header and smashed past keeper Jose Reina to send the home fans wild with delight.

It was the most unlikely of recoveries given that Rangers were second-best for much of the game.

Derry scored his first QPR goal.

Liverpool were all over them for most of the first half and an error by Nedum Onuoha presented the Merseysiders with an early chance to go ahead.

Luis Suarez found himself through on goal after Onuoha missed the ball, but the striker was denied by a smart save from keeper Paddy Kenny.

Having struggled to venture out of their own half, Rangers almost equalised in bizarre circumstances.

In attempting to volley away Armand Traore’s left-wing cross, Liverpool defender Jose Enrique belted the ball behind him and inches over his own bar.

That at least offered Hughes’ side some encouragement and they ended the half strongly, with Cisse shooting narrowly wide from 25 yards.

But they were unable to maintain that momentum and went behind nine minutes after the restart, when Bobby Zamora’s goal-line clearance to deny Kuyt was met by a blistering 15-yard volley from Coates.

QPR rallied after Mackie was brought on to replace the dismal Barton, but any prospect of a comeback appeared to have been extinguished when Liverpool doubled their lead.

Suarez turned away from Onuoha and fired against the post and although Kenny was able to keep out Stewart Downing’s follow-up, he was powerless to prevent Kuyt tapping in the loose ball.

The failure of Rangers’ expensive transfer policy has probably been best summed up by the stirring performances of stalwarts Clint Hill, Mackie and Derry this season.

And it was Derry, who worked tirelessly throughout, that gave them hope when he got his first goal for the club.

Rangers thought they had hit the jackpot when Cisse then levelled, but they ended up with all three points after Enrique failed to clear his lines and Mackie nipped in to score. West London Sport

London 24/Ian Cooper - QPR stun Liverpool with dramatic comeback

Queens Park Rangers' Anton Ferdinand celebrates their victory over LiverpoolQueens Park Rangers' Anton Ferdinand celebrates their victory over Liverpool

Djibril Cisse had promised to show his former employers no mercy - and the Rs’ striker was as good as his word as he inspired a stunning comeback from QPR against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Former Liverpool star Cisse’s 85th-minute header paved the way for the most dramatic of winners for Jamie Mackie, who slotted the ball underneath Pepe Reina with moments to go.

That goal sparked absolute pandemonium at Loftus Road, as Mark Hughes’s side leapt above Bolton Wanderers and out of the Premier League drop zone.

Shaun Derry had earlier given the Rs a sliver of hope, heading in his first goal of the season to make it 2-1 after Sebastian Coates and Dirk Kuyt had given Liverpool a seemingly insurmountable lead.

It was an extraordinary climax to what had been a largely mundane Rangers performance, but this result will give the west Londoners genuine hope that they can escape relegation this season.

Luis Suarez should have given the visitors a third-minute lead, capitalising on a mistake by Nedum Onuoha and sprinting clear, but the Uruguayan was denied by a fine save from Paddy Kenny.

The Reds forced nine corners inside the opening 15 minutes - which all came to nothing - and they might have been made to pay at the other end had Djibril Cisse kept his 20-yard drive on target.

Martin Skrtel headed a corner over the crossbar, but Rangers were gradually settling after Liverpool’s vibrant start, Pepe Reina doing well to tip away Luke Young’s dangerous deflected cross.

Cisse drilled a shot from 25 yards which whistled a whisker wide of Reina’s left-hand post.

The final minutes of the half - in contrast to the first - belonged to QPR, but the most they could muster was a speculative shot from Samba Diakite which flew over the crossbar.

Liverpool took the lead on 53 minutes from an unlikely source; Rangers failed to clear their lines from a corner, and Sebastian Coates lashed a scissors-kick volley past the helpless Kenny.

Mark Hughes responded to that goal by hauling off his skipper Joey Barton, who was roundly booed by the QPR fans as he departed the pitch, who in turn cheered for his replacement Jamie Mackie.

Dirk Kuyt then played in Stewart Downing with a chance to double Liverpool’s lead, only to see his shot well-saved by Kenny, however, the Reds were soon to add to QPR’s misery.

Suarez twisted his way into the penalty area and fired a shot across Kenny which bounced off the post. Downing picked up the rebound only to also be denied, but Dirk Kuyt tapped in the rebound.

That lead was quickly halved as Rangers finally fought back. The otherwise quiet Adel Taarabt swung in a corner, and Derry climbed high to head into the bottom corner.

Loftus Road sensed a comeback, and they were to get one. Four minutes from time, Taye Taiwo sent a cross from the left, and Cisse was left un-marked to head past a startled Reina.

Better was to follow. A pass forward was totally misjudged by Jose Enrique, and Mackie burst through on goal to fire the ball underneath Reina, to seal the unlikeliest of victories.

At the final whistle Loftus Road was rocking - perhaps to the sound of Premier League survival. London 24

Jamie Mackie scores last-gasp winner as QPR sink Liverpool

This was the sort of feat that fuels successful relegation fights. Queen Park Rangers were deservedly two goals down with time ticking away yet stormed back to plunder their first win in two months. It was a display of unquenchable spirit above all else and propelled Mark Hughes's team out of the bottom three. Liverpool, by contrast, surrendered any lingering hopes of finishing in the Champions League places with a curiously meek collapse. José Enrique's inexplicable tumble that allowed Jamie Mackie in for the stoppage-time winning goal summed up the visitors' haplessness in the last quarter of a contest that they had mostly dominated.

This was the first labour of QPR's Herculean 10-task run-in, with clashes against the top four among those looming after the duel with Kenny Dalglish's team. Hughes was able to field his strongest line-up as he sought to arrest a six-match winless streak, with his new signing Samba Diakité returning to the team after serving the suspension he incurred for getting sent off in his debut against Fulham last month. That was just one of a litany of blunders that helped account for QPR's lowly position in the table.

It initially look like more errors would undo Rangers here, as in the second minute Joey Barton wasted a promising attacking free-kick for the home side and enabled Jay Spearing to launch an immediate counter-offensive. A slip by Nedum Onuaha helped clear Luis Suárez's path to goal but Liverpool fans were again left to lament the striker's shabby finishing skills as he shot straight at Paddy Kenny, who got up quickly to smother the rebound.

Liverpool did not begin like a side who believed a top-four finish was beyond them and continued to apply fierce pressure. Martin Skrtel went close with a header from a corner in the seventh minute and two minutes later another corner led to Anton Ferdinand having to scoop a Dirk Kuyt shot off the line. QPR were like rabbits' in the visitors' headlights.

Not until the 15th minute did they muster a shot, and that was a token long-range effort by Djibril Cissé that rolled wide. To their credit, however, QPR gradually got to grips with the triumvirate of Steven Gerrard, Charlie Adam and Spearing in central midfield. The visitors found it increasingly hard to open the hosts up and QPR began to exert pressure of their own. They almost took the lead in freakish fashion on the half-hour, when Enrique perpetrated his starting mistake of the evening and nearly walloped an Armand Traoré cross into his own goal. It whizzed just wide, as did a thunderous 25-yard drive from Cissé two minutes later.

Liverpool had to rejig their defence when Martin Kelly departed injured, Jamie Carragher switching to right-back to accommodate the substitute Sebastián Coátes in the centre. Liverpool's response to Rangers' relative resurgence was strangely passive, as they retreated deep and incited more pressure. They finished the first period entrenched in their own box.

Dalglish sought to reintroduce some dynamism to his midfield by replacing Adam with Jordan Henderson at half-time and he also pushed Kuyt closer to Suárez up front. Liverpool were soon in the ascendancy again and QPR had to defend frantically. They did so successfully until the 54th minute, when Coátes showed that there was at least one Uruguayan on the pitch who could finish emphatically: after Bobby Zamora cleared a Stewart Downing shot off the line, the ball rebounded to the centre-half who returned it into the net with an acrobatic volley from 16 yards.

"That was a once-in-the-lifetime strike from a 6ft4 centre-back," marvelled Hughes. While that technique was immaculate , some of QPR biggest names were offering little. Adel Taarabt did not unfurl his tricks until late on and Joey Barton's display was so inconsequential that he was jeered off when being replaced by Jamie Mackie on 62 minutes.

Downing would have doubled Liverpool's lead in the 71st minute if not for a fine save by Kenny but one minute later the goalkeeper's best efforts were not enough. Suárez conjured space on the left of the box and his cross-shot bounced off the post and out to Downing, who sidestepped two defenders before firing a shot that Kenny beat into the path of Kuyt, who poked the ball in from five yards.

Then began a QPR fightback that both Hughes and Dalglish admitted they did not see coming. Shaun Derry landed the first blow with a fine header from a Taarabt corner in the 77th minute before Cissé met a splendid Taye Taiwo delivery from the left with an equally fine header to draw the teams level in the 84th. Now Liverpool were reeling and they could not even hold out for a point, Enrique's slip presenting Mackie with the chance to fire into the net from 10 yards and ignite wild celebrations among home fans who suddenly believe they may be watching Premier League matches again next season. Late goals leave Reds frustrated

A brilliant goal from Sebastian Coates was little consolation as Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Queens Park Rangers.

The defender might never forget his first strike in English football, an acrobatic volley to open the scoring at Loftus Road, but after Dirk Kuyt made the score 2-0, the hosts mounted an incredible comeback to boost their chances of Barclays Premier League survival.

Shaun Derry, Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie all fired in the final 14 minutes and the Reds left West London feeling robbed.

The Liverpool team included Luis Suarez and Martin Kelly, both of whom had recovered from knocks that forced them from the pitch against Stoke City. They and the rest of the players donned t-shirts during the warm-up with messages of support for Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba as he continues to recover from a cardiac arrest.

The action then commenced and it was Liverpool who seized the initiative, a mistake from Nedum Onuoha allowing Suarez to charge unobstructed towards Paddy Kenny. But for once a player whose unpredictability is perhaps his greatest asset was outwitted, and the goalkeeper saved.

Anton Ferdinand then had to rescue his teammates, who'd been unlocked by a Kelly throughball that presented Stewart Downing with a chance.

QPR 3-2 LFC: 11 mins

In the opening nine minutes Liverpool were awarded seven corners, the last of which dropped to Kuyt at the back post. A goal looked likely but again Ferdinand was the obstructer with a block which left him winded and requiring treatment.

The hosts could not cope with their opponents' passing, crisp and decisive as it was, and they could not cope with Suarez as he turned, shimmied, dragged and generally caused havoc.

But the goal did not arrive, and from that fact QPR seemed to find hope.

Cisse - witnessed strolling through Shepherd's Bush before the game wearing a silk mac - created half chances here and there, while Pepe Reina was nearly left helpless by a mis-hit clearance from teammate Jose Enrique.

Kenny Dalglish had to reshape his defence, replacing the injured Kelly with Coates. Jamie Carragher shifted to right-back to accommodate the Uruguayan, and he and his colleagues were absorbing increasing pressure as half-time approached.

There was more bad news for Dalglish during the break when it became apparent that Charlie Adam, subject to a heavy tackle immediately prior to the teams coming in, would need to be withdrawn. His adversary, Armand Traore, suffered the same fate, with Taye Taiwo and Jordan Henderson the replacements.

The second half began with another spate of Liverpool corners, and it was number 14 that finally produced a goal on 54 minutes. And what a goal. You will wait a long time to see a better finish by a centre-back than the sharpest of scissor-kicks executed from the penalty spot by Coates after the ball had been ricocheted from the line.

Coates (53)

A minute later Downing drove a shot that goalkeeper Kenny could not handle but at least managed to get in the way of. Our England winger would later be played one-on-one by Kuyt only to be denied by Kenny - but Liverpool would not be denied a second for much longer.

Suarez beat two defenders on 72 minutes before hitting the post; Downing pounced but his shot was saved. Finally Kuyt proved clinical with a prod beyond QPR's excellent stopper.

It was a long way back for QPR now but, with nothing to lose, they surged. A back-header from Derry following a corner ensured the final 14 minutes would be frantic.

And so it proved. On Sunday it was former Red Peter Crouch who scored against Liverpool, now it was Cisse's turn, heading a Taiwo cross beyond Reina on 86 minutes.

The winner came in injury time when an Enrique error left substitute Mackie with only Reina to beat and he made no mistake.

Jamie Mackie's dramatic second-half stoppage time winner stole victory for QPR, who came from two goals behind to record a remarkable victory at Loftus Road.

On a night that R's fans won't forget in a hurry, it looked as though Liverpool would be taking all three points back to Anfield after Sebastian Coates and Dirk Kuyt put the visitors two goals to the good in the second half.

Rangers, however, had other ideas - and after Shaun Derry pulled a goal back for the home side 13 minutes from time - Djibril Cisse was on hand to put the Hoops on terms on 86 minutes.

And the drama wasn't finished there. Substitute Mackie capped the unlikeliest of comebacks, with his 90th-minute strike pulling the R's out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone.

Mark Hughes made two changes to his Hoops side from last weekend's 2-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers, with Luke Young and Adel Taarabt replacing Clint Hill (back) and Shaun Wright-Phillips respectively.

Paddy Kenny was in goal for QPR, who deployed a 4-4-2 formation.

Young, Nedum Onuoha, Anton Ferdinand and Armand Traore lined up in defence.

R's skipper Joey Barton began from the right-hand side of midfield, with Derry and Samba Diakite in the middle. Taarabt, meanwhile, operated out wide on the left.

Cisse - who scored his second goal in just three Rangers appearances at the Reebok Stadium 11 days ago - partnered Bobby Zamora in attack.

Fresh from their victory over Stoke in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday, the visitors began with a real sense of purpose.

It took only four minutes for Kenny Dalglish's side to fashion their first attempt on target - that thanks to a defensive mistake from the home side.

It was a chance that Liverpool really should have taken. Onuoha misread a Charlie Adam pass which put Luis Suarez in the clear, but the Uruguayan hot-shot was to be denied by a fine low stop from Kenny.

Five minutes later, Steven's Gerrard zipped slide-rule pass freed Stewart Downing in the box, only for Derry to produce an excellent sliding intervention to stop the England wide-man from getting a shot away.

Rangers had to defend for their lives early on. Indeed, they had Ferdinand to thank for a brave block to thwart Kuyt from close range on ten minutes, after Gerrard's corner eventually fell into his path.

But the R's would finally fashion their first attempt of note on the quarter-hour mark.

Zamora and Cisse combined wonderfully well, exchanging passes before the latter pulled an effort wide of the left-hand post.

At the other end, Martin Skrtel went close with a header nine minutes later, after meeting Adam's corner.

There was a heart in mouth moment for Dalglish's men shortly after. Traore out-paced his marker down the left before his subsequent cross forced a miscued clearance from Jose Enrique that only just went past upright.

Despite Liverpool's early dominance, Rangers got better as the half wore on.

Cisse went exceptionally close to putting the R's in front in that improved period of play, crashing an effort inches wide of the right-hand post after evading the challenges of Adam and Jay Spearing.

The French striker would also produce the first attempt of the second period, with his effort from distance forcing a comfortable low save from Pepe Reina just a minute after the half-time break.

But it was Liverpool who would strike first thanks a sensational effort from substitute Coates.

Gerrard's corner eventually led to Downing seeing his shot cleared off the goal-line, before Coates was first to the loose ball to thunder a sublime volley into the roof of the net.

Downing would also go close for the visitors three minutes later, seeing his rasping drive gathered at the second attempt by Kenny.

The Reds' opener prompted Hughes into a change on 62 minutes, bringing on Mackie to replace Barton.

Though it was Liverpool who would go closest following the substitution.

Downing saw his shot - that appeared to be creeping into the bottom right-hand corner - superbly tipped around the post by Kenny.

The Merseysiders would soon double their advantage on 72 minutes.

Suarez's effort crashed off the post, before Downing's subsequent shot forced a fine low save from Kenny.

Kuyt was then first to react to the loose ball, racing in to slide home a Liverpool second.

But Rangers ensured there would be a grandstand finish, halving the deficit on 77 minutes.

Taarabt's corner from the right found Derry at the back post, who rose highest - albeit on the stretch - to head home from close range.

Staggeringly, the R's put themselves on terms with just four minutes left on the clock.

Taye Taiwo's centre from the left was of perfection to find the head of Cisse, who stole in to nod QPR level.

Loftus Road was rocking - but there were scenes still to come that will live long in the memory, after Rangers capped an outstanding comeback in second-half stoppage time.

A ball from deep put Mackie in the clear and he kept remarkable calm, driving into the box before expertly sliding the ball past Reina for the winning goal.

MAIL - The masterplan is out of the window! Hughes admits QPR could go down

Mark Hughes has admitted throwing his Barclays Premier League survival masterplan 'out the window' as he looks to kick-start QPR's revival with victory over Liverpool on Wednesday.

Rangers boss Hughes revealed he had tried to predict the results of all of the bottom five for the rest of the season at the start of the month and joked he had his side surviving 'by a million miles'.

But the controversial defeat at Bolton 10 days ago, which saw QPR denied a goal despite the ball crossing the line, forced Hughes to go back to the drawing board.
Blow: Mark Hughes was dismayed by Clint Hill's goal that never was

'I think that got thrown out the window when the assistant referee didn't give our goal!' he said.

'You do that and try and pre-empt who will win against whom, but it doesn't always run true to form.'

The Bolton defeat saw QPR slide into the bottom three with 10 games to go and Hughes admitted the prospect of relegation had been discussed at Loftus Road.

'We're not skirting around the subject, certainly,' he said.

'We've made it really clear that we need to perform and we understand the consequences if we don't.

'You can use it as a motivating factor, I'm sure.'

After an initial lift following Hughes' January appointment, Rangers have now lost five and drawn two of their last seven games in all competitions.

That is despite boasting arguably a stronger squad than all their relegation rivals.

'We understand very clearly that we're in a scrap and we need to start putting points on the board,' Hughes said.

'We understand that very, very clearly.

'There's no complacency in terms of what we have to do to ensure that we stay in the Premier League this year.

'We're fully in tune, fully focused.'
Stumble: The loss to Bolton has left QPR in severe trouble

Asked if it was time his big-name players stepped up, he added: 'Everybody has to step up. It's important that we get big performances from everyone in the team, everyone who's selected.

'If we have that then we've got a chance because we can't afford to go into games with one, two, three, four players not quite at the level they need to be.'

QPR's biggest advantage over Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan and Wolves is arguably their goal threat following the January arrivals of Djibril Cisse and Bobby Zamora.

Hughes said: 'We've got to exploit the qualities that they have.

'On occasions, we haven't done it to the best effect we can.

'The more we play together and the more those two play in the same side and the team gets used to the kind of runs and the kind of balls that they want then the better they'll become.

'In fairness, they've both scored a couple of goals each in very few appearances. So I'm pleased with what they've done so far.
Hi again: Djibril Cisse could kick-start QPR's survival bid against former club Liverpool

'But we know that if we're going to score the goals that are going to keep us in the league then we have to release them in good areas.'

Cisse could be particularly motivated tomorrow against his former club, who jettisoned him despite the Frenchman helping them to Champions League and FA Cup glory.

Hughes said: 'Every player when they go up against their former clubs want to make a good impression.

'Maybe we might gain from a little bit of an extra edge to his general play.

'Given that it's Liverpool and one of the top clubs in the Premier League, there'll be an extra spark from Djib.' Mail

GUARDIAN/Sachin Nakrani - HUGHES REMAINS CONFIDENT

Mark Hughes remains confident QPR's season will have a happy ending.

Mark Hughes, the QPR manager, is certain that his side will avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The sequel, as film history shows, is rarely as good as the original. But as this Premier League season heads towards its climax Queens Park Rangers supporters can only hope the drama that is to unfold in front of them proves to be even more gripping and glorious in its conclusion than The Four Year Plan, Matt Hodgson's gasp-inducing documentary that aired on British television this month and charts how the club survived the chaotic ownership of, among others, Flavio Briatore, to rise to the Premier League.

For QPR it is now about the 10-match mission, the opening scene of which plays out on Wednesday evening when they take on Liverpool at Loftus Road. The visitors pose a stern challenge but for Mark Hughes's side defeat is almost unthinkable given they sit 18th, a point from safety but facing a run-in from hell between now and the end of the season. After Wednesday night come trips to Sunderland, Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea and Manchester City alongside playing Arsenal, Swansea, Tottenham and Stoke at Loftus Road.

Hughes is refusing, however, to be pessimistic. "We've got to make sure we get a run of form and a little bit of luck. If we get that we'll be fine," he said. "It won't be easy because of the position we face. But we're ready for the challenge and I feel sure we have the players to stay in this division."

For all his confidence, the Welshman could not have envisaged becoming engrossed in such a fraught fight for survival when he replaced Neil Warnock as QPR's manager two months ago. The signs were there – the team were in 17th place having gone eight games without a win when Warnock, who had got them promoted the previous season as Championship champions, was dismissed – but Hughes knew he would be allowed to add to a squad hardly lacking in quality. Tony Fernandes, the Malaysian tycoon who became QPR chairman last August after buying out Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone's 66% stake in the club, duly gave him the funds to sign Nedum Onuoha, Bobby Zamora and Djibril Cissé.

Hardened in Premier League experience, they were expected to steer QPR into calmer waters. Instead the club has continued to sink, winning once in eight league games under Hughes and exiting the FA Cup at the hands of Chelsea.

The 48-year-old can point to mitigating circumstances, most notably the long-term injuries suffered by key performers such as Alejandro Faurlín and Heidar Helguson, as well as the potentially season-defining bad luck endured in the recent 2-1 defeat by fellow strugglers Bolton when Clint Hill's clear goal was missed by the officials. But, overall, QPR's malaise reflects badly on a manager who walked out on Fulham last June because he felt they could not match his ambitions.

Hughes continues to look at the bigger picture, however, insisting that through its plans to build a new training ground and stadium, as well as a commitment to invest in new players, QPR have the potential to become a domestic and European force if they avoid relegation and the huge financial losses and erosion in status that come with that.

"We're trying to build a new professionalism in terms of our thinking," he said. "That was the attraction of coming here and I know that if we can get through this tough period we'll be a hell of a lot stronger next year. For now, though, we're in a scrap, there's no complacency in terms of what we have to do to stay in this league. We're focused and everyone has to step up."

Hughes has been here before, having rescued Blackburn from relegation after taking over there in 2004. He has drawn on his experiences at Ewood Park to guide him through this battle and believes no club will have to reach the traditional 40-point mark to guarantee their safety this season.

"Fewer [points] will almost certainly be enough," Hughes said, before admitting he has worked out how many points he reckons all the main relegation contenders will get from their remaining fixtures. Asked if QPR, who currently have 22 points, escape relegation through his calculations, he replied: "Absolutely, by a million miles."

Liverpool await, then, and the chance for Cissé to score his third goal in four appearances for QPR against the team he signed for almost eight years ago. "I've been impressed with his technical abilities, it's of a higher standard than I expected," said Hughes of the Frenchman who is flamboyant enough not to look out of place in Hollywood and is required now to help provide his latest club with another blockbuster ending. PREMIERSHIP WANTS FERDINAND-TERRY HANDSHAKE BEFORE CHELSEA-QPR GAME

AP
The English Premier League wants a handshake between John Terry and Anton Ferdinand before the Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers match in April.

Ferdinand was allegedly racially abused by Terry during a last league match in October. The Football Association allowed the sides to forgo the traditional handshake when the two teams met in January.

Terry will stand trial in July on a charge of racially abusing Ferdinand. The league announced Tuesday it will not scrap the handshake before Chelsea-QPR on April 29.

Chief executive Richard Scudamore says the handshake ''should continue - period.'' AP

IN RESERVE: QPR 2, READING 3

Posted on: Tue 20 Mar 2012

QPR Reserves went down 3-2 to Reading at the Harlington training ground this afternoon, with the visitors grabbing a winner with virtually the last kick of the game.

The Royals stormed into a 2-0 lead with first-half goals from Shaun Cummings and Gosling, but Rangers fought back in the second half with Mo Shariff (pictured) and one of two trialists on show netting before a late Tomasz Cywka strike grabbed victory for the visitors.

Rangers started brightly and had the ball in the back of the net through Rowan Vine on 11 minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Two minutes later Frankie Sutherland's long-range effort was easily gathered while Shariff saw his strike from the edge of the area flash wide.

But on the half-hour mark, with their first real attack of note, Reading took the lead.

Some good play down the left flank involving Andy griffin and Gosling eventually saw the latter pull the ball across from the byline for right-back Cummings to smash into the roof of the net from 15 yards.

R's stopper Brian Murphy did well to get a hand to the shot but was unable to keep it out.

And just before the half-time whistle, Reading doubled their advantage.

After the Royals won a free-kick in their own area, a long ball was pumped into the Rangers box and it fell invitingly for Gosling who found the bottom corner from just inside the area.

Andrade was introduced at the break and wasted little time having an impact on proceedings, standing up a perfect centre from the left for Shariff to head home at the far post on 52 minutes.

And in the 88th minute it seemed Rangers had grabbed a deserved draw from the game when both trialists combined, with one crossing for the other to head home.

But the Royals sealed victory with seconds left. A neat one-two released Cywka and he coolly clipped the ball into the corner of the net from 12 yards. QPR
