August 25, 1973: QPR 1 Southampton 1
- QPR's First Game back in the First Division under Gordon Jago/Bobby Campbell. At home to Southampton
With John Delve replacing suspended Gerry Francis, QPR drew 1-1. Obviously, with hindsight, this was a brilliant QPR Team (with a few weaknesses) which went on to almost-great things.
But before the start of the season, there were concerns: QPR's only previous experience with the First Division was their 1968/69 18 points humiliation.

NEIL WARNOCK/THE INDEPENDENT re Paddy Kenny and QPR

As I'm sure you are aware, my goalkeeper has been in the news in relation to some text messages he exchanged with people at QPR. I have to say I was disappointed that something that began in good humour got out of hand.

I've spoken to Paddy Kenny and he was full of remorse and couldn't apologise to me quickly enough. I told him there is no problem with having a drink to celebrate a win like last Saturday's over Wolves but he must be aware of his responsibilities to the club and be careful where he is and what he does. I've obviously fined him and he has agreed to finish on Twitter with immediate effect. He has also apologised to Tony Fernandes, QPR's chairman.

I've also spoken to Tony and told him I honestly believe there will not be a repeat. We ended the call on good terms.

It is disappointing when something which is essentially a private conversation becomes public the way this has but, as I've told players before, they need to be very careful about texting and Tweeting. You'll know if you've read this column over the years that I'm not a fan of social networking, and incidents like this only strengthen my belief that people are better off talking to each other.

As I pointed out to Paddy, another reason why he should have left well alone is that certain tabloids will always rake up dirt from his past, so why give them more ammunition? The other aspect which disappointed me about the newspaper coverage is that everyone keeps comparing QPR's 5-0 home defeat on Saturday to their 4-0 home defeat in the opening game of last season, when I was manager. There is a difference – they've spent about £30m since. We had the same team that played in the Championship as I hadn't been allowed to sign any players up to then. The same team then responded, winning at Everton the following week, which augurs well for Rangers at Norwich today. QPR are also due some luck against Norwich, as they didn't get any when I was there.

With Norwich also shipping five last weekend there will be a few nerves at Carrow Road among both sets of teams and their fans. I felt sorry for Chris Hughton on Saturday; I know how it feels going to Fulham and losing heavily – we did it last year. When they get in full flow at Craven Cottage, Fulham are hard to play; if you are chasing the game you just get picked off..."Independent

Fernandes - No panic at QPR

Chairman insists they will continue 'sensible business'

Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes has rejected suggestions that the club are 'panic buying' in the wake of their 5-0 humbling by Swansea.

The Rs have responded to their dismal opening day defeat at Loftus Road by making moves for experienced central defenders Ricardo Carvalho and Michael Dawson and goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Mark Hughes has been one of the busiest managers in the transfer window this summer, bringing in a host of new faces as the West London side look to avoid the relegation scrap of last term which saw them survive on the final day of the season.

But Fernandes insists that all of their dealings are undertaken with a long-term goal in mind and maintains the club will not spend more than they can afford.

Very calm

He said: "We are in discussions but QPR have got to run a sensible business. I think people out there think we are just throwing money and panic buying.
"But I think we are very calm at what we want.
"We have done some sensible business over the summer and we are not going to throw it away. We are here for the long run and we'll do things properly."
Barton
The future of controversial midfielder Joey Barton remains undecided, with the club's former captain linked with a move away from Loftus Road and facing a 12-game suspension at the start of the season.
Fernandes added: "There are many things that are happening with Joey, and it's just like anything else, it all happens in the last nine days of the transfer window.
"Nothing's confirmed and Joey's very much a QPR player at the moment. He's done us proud in the past, so we'll just wait and see what happens.  Sky

We have done some sensible business over the summer and we are not going to throw it away

TONY FERNANDES has hit back at critics of QPR’s spending, insisting the club are not panicking.

Mark Hughes has been the busiest Premier League boss this summer, making eight new signings with more to come.

Loan

Loftus Road boss Sparky is in talks with Tottenham centre-back Michael Dawson, 28, about a £9m move and Real Madrid defender Ricardo Carvahlo, 34, over a season-long loan.

They are also chasing Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar, 32.

Most of the London club’s captures since Fernandes’ takeover last summer are senior stars on big wages with no sell-on value.

However, chairman Fernandes said: “QPR have got to run a sensible business.

“I think people out there think we are just throwing money around and panic buying.

“I am hearing all these kinds of words but I think we are very calm over what we want.

“We have done some sensible business over the summer and we are not going to throw it away.

“We are here for the long run and we’ll do things properly.” STAR

Telegraph/Thom Gibbs - QPR chairman Tony Fernandes is chasing the impossible dream

Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes is a dreamer. It says so in his Twitter biography.
’s right there in a sea of incorrect capital letters after “CEO of AirAsia, Founder of Tune Group, Principal of Caterham F1 Team, Chairman of QPR,” and “Entrepreneur”. Rather than dreaming like the rest of us about, say, arriving for his Business Studies A-level wearing only a QPR away shirt, or running through treacle while pursued by an angry Bernie Ecclestone made of wasps, Fernandes’ dreams are big, bold, involve football and paying Kieron Dyer thousands of pounds to play Angry Birds.

These dreams are increasingly difficult to differentiate from reality.

Including loans, QPR have brought in 15 players in the year since Fernandes’ arrival. Some or all of Ricardo Carvalho, Michael Dawson, Jermain Defoe, Julio Cesar, and Kaka are expected to arrive before Sept 1. (Ok, perhaps not Kaka, but he would fit the profile identified by QPR’s scouting network, which appears to be a copy of Football Manager 2008). Planning permission is secured for an urgently needed new training ground. Wild plans are progressing for a not-needed 45,000-capacity stadium.

Fernandes, like Leeds United’s Peter Risdale before him, is living the dream. It is not quite the wildly wasteful Seth Johnson model popularised at Elland Road, given the frightening wealth of QPR’s 33 per cent-owner Lakshmi Mittal, and that Fernandes and vice-chairman Amit Bhatia speak sensibly about the club. But actions speak louder than words and, in football, there are few more vociferous actions than signing an entirely new squad of ageing players in 12 months.

Loftus Road is decrepit, but supporters are correctly concerned about the mooted capacity for a new ground. Clubs can overachieve for sustained periods under talented management and with an exceptional group of players or a powerful club-wide philosophy. What is basically unheard of is a club entirely transcending its status in the long term.

Manchester City and Chelsea being ferociously bankrolled to glory is one thing. Transforming a mid-level club whose traditional home is the lower half of the Championship to one capable of attracting the same crowds as Liverpool is simply impossible.

There is perhaps an ingrained British suspicion of class mobility at work here, the ancestral hangover that meekly warns that one must not aspire to be more than one is. There is also reality informed by years of precedents. This season’s QPR has a strong whiff of past expensive failures: the Middlesbrough team of Ravanelli, Juninho and Emerson that were relegated from the top flight in 1997, or the West Ham side that suffered the same fate in 2003 despite Carrick, Di Canio, Defoe and Joe Cole.

With every new signing, there’s an increasingly noisy question from some corners of the QPR support: where does it all end? The answer? Usually in tears.

In a past life as a construction industry journalist, I interviewed a Portsmouth board member about a planned move to an exciting new stadium. That venue now resides in the netherworld of unrealised artist’s impressions. Portsmouth are in the all-too-real netherworld that is League One.

I asked him: “You’ve doing incredibly well at the moment, but lots of clubs have good spells under good managers. What happens if Harry Redknapp leaves?”

A slightly blank look. A pause for thought. A considered reply: “That is not a part of our business plan.” Football is not business. If it was, it would have been wound up long ago or smaller clubs would have been swallowed up by five or six giants like so many independent High Street retailers.

The Portsmouth director’s lack of foresight and the culture of optimistic PR speak around QPR excludes the possibility of failure. Fernandes is dreaming big, and QPR supporters should be grateful for his dedication. They would perhaps feel a little more comfortable if his club stopped behaving like they were inside a video game.  Telegraph

MAIL/Neil Ashton - Revealed: Kenny's cruel phone rant mocking fellow keeper Green over QPR defeat

Sportsmail can reveal goalkeeper Paddy Kenny's amazing voicemail rant to a member of QPR's coaching staff, attacking the decision to replace him with Robert Green.

The message was left on Sunday at 1.30am. It mocks former England keeper Green's performance during the 5-0 opening day home defeat by Swansea.
In the message, Kenny, who appears to have been celebrating Leeds’s victory over Wolves on Saturday lunchtime, says: ‘It’s Rob Green’s agent here, I just wondered, er, how you got on today. I didn’t really see the f****** score but I heard it didn’t go too well.

Phone rants: Former QPR keeper Paddy Kenny is now at Leeds United
‘But, never mind, Robbo’s a good keeper. Don’t you worry about that, he’s a good keeper.’
Kenny then hung up.

The content of the voicemail was disclosed to Sportsmail by a QPR source. It has been obtained with the full consent and knowledge of the club official concerned and was one of a number of abusive messages left by the Leeds keeper that night.

He bombarded Rangers owner Tony Fernandes and another member of QPR’s coaching staff with text messages and voicemails.

The member of Mark Hughes’ technical team was out of the country at the time and had his alarm set for 4am in order to catch a flight back to London.
He was disturbed on Saturday evening by a number of phone calls and text messages poking fun at the decision to replace him with the former England No 1.

Green, his country’s first-choice keeper for the opening game of the 2010 World Cup against the USA, had a difficult Rangers debut.
The former West Ham man failed to stop Swansea striker Michu’s speculative 25-yard effort in the eighth minute and conceded another four goals.

Kenny clearly enjoyed the moment after linking up with Warnock at Elland Road in the summer for £900,000.
QPR lodged a formal complaint with Leeds in an email sent to Elland Road on Sunday and want the FA to step in.
Kenny was asked for his version of events at the training ground on Monday and has denied any wrongdoing.
Leeds chief Warnock, preparing for Saturday’s Championship clash against Peterborough, refused to comment. The former Rangers manager, sacked last season after winning promotion to the Premier League, is conducting his own investigation.
Green is known to be furious about another keeper making fun of him  Daily Mail

- QPR's Crippling Lack of Transfer Imagination

Telegraph/Jeremy WilsonQPR’s owners speculate to accumulate real success
Spend-spend policy stakes Loftus Road future, but at least the Mittal family millions provide safety net

Another day in another transfer window and once again it was not Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester City generating the biggest headlines but Queens Park Rangers.
With Jose Bosingwa, a Champions League winner, having already arrived and negotiations ongoing yesterday for Real Madrid’s Ricardo Carvalho and England centre-back Michael Dawson, QPR’s back four against Norwich on Saturday could bear no resemblance to the one which lined up in their 5-0 opening-day drubbing against Swansea.

After the additions already this summer of Ji-Sung Park, Robert Green, Junior Hoilett, Ryan Nelsen and Andrew Johnson, it will also represent the continuation of a recruitment pattern at Loftus Road that is certainly ambitious but also extravagant and highly risky. Add in Kieron Dyer, Joey Barton, Luke Young, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Anton Ferdinand, Nedum Onuoha, Djibril Cissé and Bobby Zamora, all signed since promotion was achieved from the Championship, and Mark Hughes has one of the most experienced squads in the Premier League.
Yet it is also a team with limited resale value and, for a club on QPR’s relatively moderate turnover, an extraordinary wage bill.

In the most recently published accounts, which relate to QPR’s Championship-winning season in 2010-11, the wages to turnover ratio was a whopping 183 per cent. It led to an operating loss of £25.7million. The next accounts, expected to be published in April, could be more eye-watering still.

Nobody is pretending that the model is even remotely self-sustainable in the short term but there might still be method in what some might regard as madness. Yes, in the recruitment of seasoned internationals on wages that cannot be covered by their natural resources, there is a possible comparison with Portsmouth or even Leeds. Yet it is equally possible to point to the examples of Manchester City, Chelsea, Wigan, Stoke City, Fulham, Middlesbrough and Bolton as clubs who were successful in establishing themselves at a new level in the Premier League after an initial injection of outside funds. It is about speculating to accumulate.

There is certainly no particular concern at the Premier League’s headquarters in Gloucester Place over QPR’s strategy. In the wake of Portsmouth, tighter sustainability tests were introduced and clubs are required to produce financial information on how they will meet their commitments during the year.
The viability of QPR’s model is underpinned by the vast wealth of the club’s owners. The 2010-11 accounts with their strategy for growth at every level, should provide considerable reassurance to supporters.
Although net debt as of May 2011 was £56.1million, all outstanding loans can be described as “soft” in that they are only owed to Tune QPR Sdn Bhd, a company owned by Tony Fernandes, Kamarudin Meranun and Ruben Gnanalingam or the Mittal family’s Sea Dream Limited. Given that the Mittal family, who are 33 per cent owners of QPR, feature regularly in the top 10 of Forbes’ list of the world’s richest people, the safety net should be considerable.

The focus for the owners stretches well beyond this summer’s investment in the playing squad. Beneath some frantic transfer activity, change at QPR is being implemented from bottom to top. Planning permission has already been secured for a new training ground at Warren Farm that is due to be opened next year.
There has been an overhaul of the technical staff beneath Hughes. Mike Rigg, the technical director, was appointed from Manchester City in April and, in the last 48 hours, Shaun Hallett has come in as the head of academy and football operations, Levin Cruickshank as scouting coordinator and Stuart Webber, Hans Gillhaus and Steve Hitchen have been added to the scouting team.
A longer-term desire to move towards self-sustainability is reflected in negotiations over two west London sites that could house a new 45,000-seat stadium. Phil Beard, QPR’s chief executive, is focused on growing the club’s fan base over the next five years to the extent that a larger new stadium could be filled. As well as its modest 18,500 capacity, Loftus Road has only 18 executive boxes.

“What we desire is an arena for QPR that could have multi-use capabilities,” said Beard. “If we are serious at QPR about building a club and generating improved income then we have to consider another site.

“We need to grow our fan base and engage with young people and the community and become a club that is not just known in London and around Europe but further afield.”
Beard realises the dangers: “The game is so competitive it tempts clubs to push their financial boundaries.”
The lasting commitment of QPR’s owners will decide whether the boundaries have been sensibly stretched in a fascinating first year back among English football’s elite. Telegraph

The Guardian/Jamie Jackson
Tony Fernandes's QPR continue quest to spend or be damned

QPR's approach to sign players with little re-sale value raises questions over Tony Fernandes's vision for the club

Last September Tony Fernandes, Queens Park Rangers' new owner, told the Guardian: "The message is: 'I don't know where we'll take this club, but we'll give it our best shot.'"

In the first season following promotion the journey would be a haphazard stumble to near-relegation shaped by a scattergun recruitment policy that now stands at two managers, 40 players used and 16 recruited if Michael Dawson's expected move from Tottenham Hotspur goes through.

Factor in the desire of the manager Mark Hughes, who replaced Neil Warnock in January, to add Real Madrid's Ricardo Carvalho (on loan) and Dawson's Spurs colleague Jermain Defoe before 1 September and that is enough for a completely new match-day squad since Fernandes became majority shareholder.

All this would be fine if QPR had kicked-off their first full campaign under Hughes with style and stability, but by 4.50pm on Saturday Michael Laudrup, in his first Premier League match as a manager, had overseen Swansea City's 5-0 hammering of the Hoops at Loftus Road.

Hughes's words following their survival, despite losing 3-2 to Manchester City in that final day championship decider, suddenly convinced a little less. "We will never be in this situation again while I am manager," the Welshman said. Hughes's optimism was probably founded in his knowledge he would never have to select Joey Barton in a QPR XI again.

After witnessing how the midfielder came close to costing the club their Premier League status by being sent off against City in May, and compounding this with further clashes with Sergio Agüero and Vincent Kompany – for which Barton received a 12-match ban – Hughes hoped the midfielder's travails and tweeting would soon be someone else's problem.

Barton was the first player to be signed under Fernandes's ownership. Hindsight's wisdom now places this and his appointment as captain by Warnock as a disastrously wrong tone-setting move for the new era, one from which Hughes is still trying to recover the club.

Those 40 players called upon by QPR are five more than any other club in the corresponding period. Norwich City and Swansea City, promoted alongside QPR in 2011, have needed 29 and 28 respectively.

The profiles of the 15 signed so far during Fernandes's time in charge reveal the fault-lines in the club's policy. Only six could be expected to have either a significant sell-on value or have their best years ahead of them.

After Barton, 28-years-old when he arrived in August 2011 and who has been linked with a loan move to Marseille, came Luke Young (32, joined last August), Shaun Wright-Phillips (29, last August), Djibril Cissé (30, January) Bobby Zamora (30, January), Andrew Johnson (31, this summer), Ryan Nelsen (34, this summer), Rob Green (32, this summer), Park Ji-sung (31, this summer) and Dawson, who is 28.

If the 34-year-old Carvalho and Defoe, 29, arrive, then expect the wags at Loftus Road to whistle the theme from Dad's Army whenever QPR play. Hughes's squad also includes Kieron Dyer, 33, and Shaun Derry, 34. Both were named on the bench against Swansea.

Of the 16, only the 22-year-old Junior Hoilett, Anton Ferdinand (27), Armand Traoré (22), Nedum Onuoha (25), Samba Diakité (23) and the Manchester United loanee Fábio da Silva (22) have an argument for youth or sell-on value. A source close to Fernandes told the Guardian: "We haven't paid for 95%, many are free transfers and many of these players, for example, Junior Hoilett, have huge value."

In a multi-tweet dispatch following Swansea's 5-0 rout of QPR, Fernandes said: "That was a pretty poor anniversary. Worse than last season. But I remain positive. We haven't gelled yet. Have faith and be optimistic. I always said it takes time to gel this team and know our formation. There are some positives. Ji was great. Hoilett looked good. We dominated the first half. I don't honestly feel that bad. But 5-0 is 5-0.

"[The] defence was very poor today. No excuses. But this is a far better place we are in than last season against Bolton [QPR lost to them 4–0 at Loftus Road on the first day]. [There are] many many positives. I feel we are in a much better place, just takes time. At 2-0 we chased the game and lost shape. Its about a season not one game."

Fernandes even offered Hughes the confidence vote not always welcomed by managers. "I have a fantastic relationship with Mark Hughes," he said. "He's as disappointed as me. He will fix this. No one expected this. Better now than later. For all QPR fans we are working overtime. Once we have analysed the game we know what we have to do. Body blow but we are all fighters."

QPR are at Norwich City on Saturday, themselves 5–0 losers at Fulham last week, before a challenging three-game run which features a trip to the champions, Manchester City, the visit of Chelsea, the European champions, and the short journey to Tottenham Hotspur, who finished fourth last season.  Guardian

DAILY MAIL - EXCLUSIVE: QPR fury at Kenny's 'abusive' text rant after Swansea drubbing

- QPR have made a formal complaint to Leeds accusing goalkeeper Paddy Kenny of sending a series of abusive messages to a member of their management team.
- Kenny, sold by Rangers to Leeds in the summer, is said to have been mocking QPR after the 5-0 home defeat by Swansea on the opening day of the season. His replacement, Rob Green, made a howler to concede the opening goal on his debut following his move from West Ham.
- It is said a number of Kenny’s messages were of an aggressive nature.
The messages were supposedly sent on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Claim: Paddy Kenny is believed to have sent abusive texts to QPR staff

Kenny had played in goal for Leeds during their opening Championship win over Wolves earlier in the day. Leeds are believed to be investigating the complaint.
Rangers sold Kenny to Elland Road for £900,000 in the summer. He made a mistake in their last game of the season at Manchester City that could have seen QPR relegated and was allowed to move to Leeds and rejoin Neil Warnock, who had been sacked by Rangers.
The latest text row comes after Sportsmail revealed how Kevin Pietersen had sent messages to the South Africa dressing room about his captain, Andrew Strauss.

Gaffe: QPR keeper Robert Green was at fault for Swansea's opening goal
Kenny was in the QPR side promoted after winning the Championship in May 2011.
QPR owner Tony Fernandes has been informed of the Kenny incident and has asked to be kept fully up to date with developments.
If QPR are dissatisfied with how Leeds deal with the matter, they could ask the FA to discipline the keeper.
Kenny linked up with Warnock for the fourth time when he moved to Elland Road. He spent the previous two campaigns at QPR under Warnock and eight seasons at Sheffield United, where he failed a drug test after testing positive for ephedrine. He was banned for nine months by the FA.

In the past: Kenny worked with Leeds boss Neil Warnock at QPR
He was also involved in a drunken fight with his friend at an Indian restaurant in Halifax, in which his eyebrow was bitten off. Warnock also signed Kenny for Bury.
Leeds refused to comment when contacted by Sportsmail on Wednesday night.  Mail

QPR OFFICIAL SITE - Defender pens permanent deal in South Wales

MATTHEW Connolly has joined Championship club Cardiff City.

The 24 year-old has penned a three year-deal in South Wales, after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for the defender's services.

A product of the successful Arsenal academy, Connolly joined QPR from the Gunners in January 2008, initially penning a three-and-a-half year deal.

The versatile defender made his debut against Chelsea in an FA Cup third round tie at Stamford Bridge, before going on to make 21 appearances in all competitions that season.

Connolly made a further 39 appearances the following campaign, before bagging his first goal in QPR colours against Blackpool in January 2010 with a stunning volley.

He was also on target in Neil Warnock's first game in charge and finished the 2009/10 season with a further 21 appearances to his name.

However, it was during the 2010/11 Championship-winning season that Connolly really came of age, forming a strong defensive partnership with Kaspars Gorkss, as the R's cantered to the title.

Last season proved to be a mixed one for Connolly, however.

He made just six Premier League appearances for the R's, but then won yet another promotion - this time with Reading - for whom he spent the final few months of the campaign on loan.

In total, Connolly made 135 appearances in all competitions for Rangers, scoring two goals.

The club would like to thank Matthew for his contribution to QPR and wish him all the best for the future http://www.qpr.co.uk/news/article/210812-connolly-cardiff-325932.aspx

Hogan signs new deal until summer of 2014

HOGAN Ephraim has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension at Loftus Road.

The midfielder has signed a new deal until the summer of 2014, as Mark Hughes continues to strengthen his first team squad.

Ephraim, who has made 117 appearances for the R’s since joining – initially on loan – in August 2007, expressed his delight at committing his future to the club, commenting: “It’s very pleasing to have my future sorted.

“There’s been a lot of player movement – both in and out – so I’m happy that I’ve signed and I know where my future lies.

“The manager has been very good to me ever since he arrived here. He backed me up with a new contract last year and now another one this season.

“Now I’m looking forward to try to force my way into the 25-man squad and stake a claim for a place in the team.”

Former Queens Park Rangers striker Patrick Agyemang training with Bidvest Wits

Former Queens Park Rangers striker Patrick Agyemang is training with Bidvest Wits and could possibly sign at the end of the week.

Agyemang is a free agent, having spent the past six months at English League One club Stevenage.

KickOff.com has already spotted the towering striker at Wits and upon further enquiries it has been revealed that a decision on the 31-year-old will be made at the end of the week.

Though born in England, Agyemang has his roots in Ghana for whom he has been capped twice, and has played most of his football in the English lower divisions, starting off at Wimbledon before moving to Brentford, Gillingham, Preston North End, QPR, Bristol City, Millwall and Stevenage.

He was part of the QPR team that won promotion back to the Premier League during the 2010/11 season, but only went on to play just two games in the Premier League before going out on loan to Millwall.

His contract with QPR was not renewed upon its expiry in June.

Though not a predatory scorer, Agyemang is a targetman who feeds mobile players very well and with Wits having Calvin Kadi, Robin Ngalande and Ryan Chapman, he could be a wise signing.

Wits also have Nigerian striker Yero Bello – who recently also tried his luck at Orlando Pirates – also training, but he will not be signed as he has not been convincing.

QPR Official Site - Scouting Coordinator Arrives

QUEENS Park Rangers Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Kevin Cruickshank as Scouting Coordinator.

Cruickshank initially worked under QPR manager Mark Hughes at Blackburn and spent four-and-a-half years at Ewood Park before leaving in the summer.

Despite having an opportunity to join another Premier League side, Cruickshank has opted for the challenge presented to him by R’s Technical Director Mike Rigg.

“Mike is an infectious guy and when he told me about the plans for the club, it was something I wanted to be involved in,” Cruickshank toldwww.qpr.co.uk

“I got a phonecall out of the blue from him, asking what my situation was. I had actually been approached by another Premier League club but once I met up with Mike and he explained the plans for QPR, it was a role I really wanted to get my teeth into.

“Tony Fernandes has got great vision for the future here and you can tell he is a very passionate man. It’s an exciting time to be here.”

Cruickshank will head up the scouting operation at Loftus Road, and he admitted: “It’s a blank canvas here. There are six existing scouts but apart from that, there’s nothing.

“We are putting a whole new structure in place here now with regards to European and worldwide travel as we look to expand the network and build a database of players that we want to bring into the football club.

“These days you probably scout more to discover less because there are so many scouts around now and the networks are so vast.

“We must make sure we work hard to stay one step ahead of the rest. We want to discover potential players earlier than anyone else.

“We have to look globally. We all know about players in certain parts of south America such as Brazil and Argentina, but what about other countries within that area? And the quality in Asia is undoubtedly improving too. We have got to stay on top of everything. We must be aware of these growing markets.”

With the summer transfer window drawing to a close, Cruickshank admits player acquisition is at the forefront of his thinking, but it seems this will always be the case.

“At this time of year, that’s obviously the most important thing,” he added. “We have got just under two weeks left now of the transfer window.

“But as soon as that closes, we are already scouting with the January window in mind. Plus we are thinking ahead to the following summer, and the January window after that. It’s an on-going process.

“We have got to be that prepared.”

QUEENS Park Rangers Football Club is delighted to announce the appointments of Chief Scouts Stuart Webber, Hans Gillhaus and Steve Hitchen.

Having previously worked with Wrexham, Webber joined Liverpool’s academy in 2009 as a Senior National Scout before progressing to become their Director of Recruitment in 2011 where he remained until taking up his post with QPR.

Webber, who will be based in England, told www.qpr.co.uk: “The attraction for me was the opportunity to work at first team level.

“Mike Rigg contacted me and I respect him greatly for the work he has done previously at Manchester City as well as what he is doing at QPR.

“When he unveiled the club’s plans, this was a no-brainer. It’s a great club and everyone seems to be pulling in the same direction so it was a very easy decision.

“We are going to be a tight-knit group and will be looking to recruit players from all over. We will be looking at players right across the board from the top-end all the way through.”

Gillhaus spent more than five years with PSV Eindhoven before joining Chelsea where he remained for six years as a senior scout.

Last year Gillhaus, who represented Holland during his playing days and is based in his homeland, was Sporting Director at Belgian side S.V. Zulte Waregem.

“This is perfect because there is something we can do here that is really possible,” he said. “I am here because of the ambition that is being shown by QPR.”

Hitchen, who will be based in France, has been with Liverpool for the past two years after enjoying five years at Tottenham.

Now he is looking forward to his new role with QPR.

“Mike Rigg played a big part in my decision to come here,” said Hitchen. “I know how he works. He has got great focus and knows exactly where the club should be going.

“When he first called I must confess a little bit of football snobbery kicked in. I wasn’t sure it was the right move but when he explained the direction of the scouting system here, it really appealed.”

QPR Official Site - Looking to the Future

Shaun Hallett named as Head of Academy and Football Operations ...

We are now in the process of building a team"

Shaun Hallett

QUEENS Park Rangers Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Shaun Hallett as Head of Academy and Football Operations.

Following the introduction of the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) by the Premier League, which iHEAD s designed to establish a hierarchy of association football academies in England, Hallett’s role will primarily involve preparing QPR’s youth set-up for advancement within the new structure.

Hallett spent six weeks auditing the club’s youth set-up on instruction from QPR Technical Director Mike Rigg and, following his recommendations, has been brought in to see they are implemented.

“It was only a very soft audit but one of my recommendations from that was the Academy should be more in-synch with the football operations of the club,” Hallett toldwww.qpr.co.uk

“Where we are now and where we need to be are quite a distance apart. There is a world of difference between identifying the appropriate staffing structure on paper and actually putting the people into that structure who will be able to deliver.

“As part of the new structure we are implementing, everyone who was working here on contract have been retained and given a permanent role within the Academy.

“We are now in the process of building a team.”

Under the EPPP, there are four categories which Premier League and Football League academies fall into. Category One represents the top academies in the country.

QPR have applied for Category Two status and will discover if they have been successful following an independent audit which is anticipated to take place early in 2013.

“The plan at this stage is to hopefully secure Category Two status and then by the time our new training ground comes along we will certainly, from a facility perspective, be prepared for a Category One application,” Hallett explained.

“The three principle components for submission of each Category are based around facilities, staffing – have you got the right structure, have you got people of quality with the relevant qualifications and experience – and, finally, programming.

“This final element you are audited on very robustly. That’s everything from the way the coaching is delivered to the education and welfare programmes, and the sports science programmes.

“They also look at how these elements are integrated across the club, to ensure the Academy isn’t regarded as a separate entity.

“The guys on the ground here were doing the day-to-day work but, to be honest, we have not progressed things quickly enough as a club to meet the deadlines of the Premier League (to achieve Category Two status).

“It is my principle short-term role to address this.

“I have a lot of project management experience over the last eight years and there is something very appropriate about that in terms of the development of the Academy, particularly the new training ground.”

Hallett, who has spent many years working with national governing bodies of sport and implementing sports development pathways, is in the process of radically transforming QPR’s Academy set-up as the club looks to expand its youth team operation.

“We will be going from two full-time staff at the Academy to more than 20 in the space of a couple of weeks,” he revealed.

As part of this new structure, Steve Gallen has been named Professional Development Coach, primarily taking charge of the Under 18s.

Hallett added: “Steve’s substantial experience as a coach in this environment will be massively important to the club in terms of us moving forward.”
