- Skysports.com understands that Queens Park Rangers are poised to sign striker Alessandro Pellicori.
- New manager Jim Magilton is working hard to strengthen his squad and QPR's scouting network have identified Pellicori as a key target.

- One of the finest midfielders in Oxford United's history comes home tonight as Jim Magilton brings his QPR side for a pre-season friendly. Jim will bring a full strength Rangers side and admits that Oxford is still a club close to his heart:
- "I was just a young boy at Liverpool and it was a big decision on my part to come to Oxford, but Brian Horton made me feel really at home and told me what a great club it was. He didn't let me down and I had a fantastic time there. My confidence grew, the players around me helped and Brian gave me that confidence, but more importantly the supporters were outstanding with me. It's still one of the results I look out for first on a Saturday night.
- "I was devastated and it broke my heart to see them go down. But they have the right sort of people at the club now and are very ambitious. They have a young and ambitious manager who is destined to do well. It's important that they get out of that league and they are making sure that the foundations they are setting there are sound ones to build on for the future."
- Rangers are expected to challenge at the top of the Championship this season, but Jim believes a game at his former club will be a great pre-season examination:
- "I'm expecting a very tough test. There were many, many nights when I was at the Manor when we welcomed teams from the Premier League and we relished the chance to go head to head against them. Chris will have his team ready. Both of us will have an eye on the season itself but we will go there with a full strength team and I expect a real tempo to the game. The last time I was there I was embarrassingly poor in Peter Rhoades-Brown's testimonial! It will still be nice to go back there though."
- The new Rangers boss is hoping for success over the coming months with his new side:
- "It's a big challenge. I had a grounding at a fantastic club in Ipswich Town. It was a steep learning curve to go straight from playing to managing, one I relished. I am coming to terms with the job although it is a still a day by day learning curve. But I have a fantastic staff here and a fantastic group of players who are willing to learn, and I think everything is right for success."

- If one man is looking forward to Friday night's game against Queen's Park Rangers more than most then it is Jim Smith. Jim, of course, managed both sides, taking United into the top flight before guiding QPR to Wembley in 1986 and to a place at the very top of the old First Division. Yellow World caught up with Jim and asked where the twenty four years since he moved between the two clubs had gone?
- "It feels like 124 years sometimes! The time has flown past but I'm looking forward to seeing the two line up again on Friday night."
How different were the two clubs back then?
- "QPR was very different because we had a plastic pitch at the time and that secured a lot of victories. It went well in the first year and we got to Wembley, but that didn't really compensate for the disappointment of leaving Oxford. The biggest regret I have in football terms was not managing Oxford United at the top level. We had done unbelievably well to get there, and not to manage them in the first games in the First Division has always been a big disappointment to me because we had such spirit and it was such a great club to be at."
- "QPR was a very different club and the chairman, Jim Gregory was very hands on, while Robert Maxwell wasn't. Mr Maxwell was involved in controlling the money and doing things like the kit, but he was never involved in the football, while Jim Gregory wanted to be a football manager. He was a good judge of a player to be fair, but very hands on which made it harder to manage. I have very fond memories of QPR and even fonder of Oxford so it will be nice to see them meet again."
- Fans who watched games between the two clubs back then will remember that plastic pitch at Loftus Road...
- "You had to play a certain way. I hated it in all honesty but it did give us wins and took us to Wembley when we beat Liverpool 1-0. You had to have players who could keep it on the floor and pass it. Byrne, Bannister, Fereday and the likes. We used to give other teams the facility to come and train on it before games, on the Thursday and Friday and the only ones who came on both days were West Ham under John Lyall and they beat us every time!
- "Teams would come on a Friday and I would sit in my office and watch them train. That helped! I watched one team lump balls from half way for defenders to handle the bounce. I watched it and was thinking to myself that it's not all about the bounce, it's about keeping the ball on the floor; we beat them 6-0 the next day!"
- Jim is still in love with the game he served so well and is looking forward to pre-season. He is also quick to give praise where it is due:
- "With Peterborough coming down and then Villa there will be plenty of good football and it is great preparations for Chris and the team. He has worked very, very hard and built a very correct squad with strength in all areas and competition in all areas. I think Kelvin has worked tremendously hard as well and supported Chris. They have done a great job and we look very well set for the challenge ahead..." Oxford United

Taarbt Speaks After QPR Deal Completed

- The Club is delighted to confirm the season long loan signing of Moroccan international midfielder Adel Taarabt.
- Rangers reached agreement with Tottenham Hotspur late last night (Wednesday) for the midfielder's services and Taarabt - who flourished during a brief loan spell in W12 at the end of last season - has now put pen-to-paper on the deal.
- Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, the 20 year-old expressed his delight at returning to Loftus Road.
- "I'm delighted to be back," he said.
- "I really enjoyed my last spell and I can't wait to spend the whole of next season here."
- Taarabt - who will again wear squad number 39 - spurned the advances of at least three other Championship Clubs to return to Loftus Road and he's relishing running out in front of the Rangers faithful once again.
- "I had a great relationship with the fans last year," he said.
- "I really appreciated their support and I can't wait to pull on the Rangers shirt again."
- He added: "There was a lot of interest in me. I had opportunities to go to Clubs in Italy, Spain and France, but Tottenham said they wanted me to play in the Championship. As soon as they said that, I knew I wanted to come back to QPR."

- "This is a decisive season for me personally. I hope to play regularly, but not just play - I want to do well, for myself, the Club and the fans."

Although still very much ‘work in progress’, I have been making lots of
changes to the AKUTR’s website in recent
weeks. New features include a portal for lift-sharing and exchanging
spare match tickets, my own Blog (which will only be published on-line),
plus one or two other ideas yet to be added. There is also a preview of
the current issue, plus subscription details and an archive of past
material.
We are also aiming to raise funds over the course of the forthcoming
season, for our chosen charity, Samaritans, with a number of events and
initiatives planned. The reasons for our doing this are set out on the
site, with links to our ‘justgiving’ page, which explains even more.
With the season just around the corner, we have an advertising rates
card available on request via the website. Paid adverts in the print
version will be replicated for free on the website. Plus this year we
are introducing an on-line directory.
As you may already be aware, last season AKUTR’s won the award as Best
Football League Fanzine, for the second year in succession. As well as
setting our sights on the hat-trick, we are also aiming to make AKUTR’s
bigger and better this season, with the website playing a vital part of
that.
Here’s to a successful season for our beloved club and a highly
enjoyable one for us supporters.

- QPR1st are fully committed to supporting the creation of the QPR in the Community trust. It is an excellent initiative which promotes the reputation and positive image of QPR and has already had a substantial impact on the lives of many people.
- I am proud to have been invited to join a strategic fund raising planning group which aims to support the work of QPR in the Community and to help keep fans involved and informed. I was invited both as Chairman of QPR1st and also because of my professional experience of working with people with disabilities. Other members of the group include Andy Evans (Community trust Chief Executive Officer), Martino Chevannes (Community Trust manager), Kevin McGrath (former director of QPR), Jane Carter (Director of Coaching for Hope) and Sharon Dyer who apart from being a fanatic QPR supporter has some impressive knowledge and experience of fund raising. - QPR1st have been proud to contribute to the campaign to improve the facilities for disabled supporters. We are committed to ensuring that QPR is an inclusive environment for anyone who wants to enjoy a game of football.
- Supporters representatives recently met with representatives of the Club. It provided an opportunity to pass on feedback from disabled fans. Much of it was positive, in particular regarding the new area for supporters who use wheelchairs but there are some issues that still need to be addressed.
- The creation of a disabled supporters group was also discussed. This could provide a means by which disabled supporters could share opinions and experiences as well as enabling more effective liaison with the Club. Leicester Mercury - Leicester City striker DJ Campbell could be on way to QPR Thursday, July 23, 2009
- Unsettled Leicester City striker DJ Campbell could be thrown a lifeline by Championship rivals QPR.
- Campbell has been linked with a move to Loftus Road and the wealthy London club have the resources to overcome any stumbling blocks over the 27-year-old striker's wage demands.
- Campbell was loaned out to Blackpool last season and scored nine goals in 19 games. Seasiders boss Ian Holloway pursued a move to acquire Campbell on a permanent basis but said he "couldn't see us getting him in a million years" because of his salary.
- QPR have no such financial limitations with Formula One magnates Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatiore masterminding a £14m takeover of the club in 2007.
- A QPR source said: "DJ Campbell would be a popular move and I'd expect him to earn a five-figure weekly salary.
- "The manager (Jim Magilton) has enquired about a lot of players and DJ would fit the bill. They like DJ down here, particularly as he is a QPR fan.
- "He had a couple of trials when he was a kid but nothing came of it, and I'm sure the supporters would welcome him back."
- Magilton's interest in Campbell may also step up a notch now that QPR striker Dexter Blackstock has agreed a switch to Nottingham Forest.
- Campbell, who has two years of his contract at City to run, has been frozen out of City manager Nigel Pearson's first-team squad plans since returning to the Walkers Stadium
- During his spell at Bloomfield Road, he said that returning to Leicester was the last thing he wanted to do.
- Campbell was not included in the 23-man squad which travelled to Slovenia but made a 45-minute appearance at Kings Lynn last weekend.
- Assistant boss Craig Shakespeare said Campbell remained a contracted Leicester player and said: "We will use him if it's the right thing to do."... Leicester Mercury

- Queens Park Rangers Football Club is delighted to confirm details of our Family Open Day at Loftus Road.
- Wednesday 29th July is the date for your diaries, in what promises to be a great opportunity for young fans to meet the players, win prizes, and participate in a variety of fun, friendly activities, ahead of another exciting campaign.
- Entry is free and gates will be open from 12.30pm until 4.00pm, where children's entertainment - including face painting, a bouncy castle and soccer skills challenges - will be on show at the back of the Loftus Road stand.
- In a bid to preserve the Loftus Road playing surface ahead of back-to-back fixtures against Southampton and Blackpool, the scheduled training session will now be replaced by a meet-and-greet with the R's First Team squad.

- Unsettled Leicester City striker DJ Campbell could be thrown a lifeline by Championship rivals QPR.
- Campbell has been linked with a move to Loftus Road and the wealthy London club have the resources to overcome any stumbling blocks over the 27-year-old striker's wage demands.
- Campbell was loaned out to Blackpool last season and scored nine goals in 19 games. Seasiders boss Ian Holloway pursued a move to acquire Campbell on a permanent basis but said he "couldn't see us getting him in a million years" because of his salary.
- QPR have no such financial limitations with Formula One magnates Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatiore masterminding a £14m takeover of the club in 2007.
- A QPR source said: "DJ Campbell would be a popular move and I'd expect him to earn a five-figure weekly salary.
- "The manager (Jim Magilton) has enquired about a lot of players and DJ would fit the bill. They like DJ down here, particularly as he is a QPR fan.
- "He had a couple of trials when he was a kid but nothing came of it, and I'm sure the supporters would welcome him back."
- Magilton's interest in Campbell may also step up a notch now that QPR striker Dexter Blackstock has agreed a switch to Nottingham Forest.
- Campbell, who has two years of his contract at City to run, has been frozen out of City manager Nigel Pearson's first-team squad plans since returning to the Walkers Stadium
- During his spell at Bloomfield Road, he said that returning to Leicester was the last thing he wanted to do.

Gareth Ainsworth Speaks - Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - Gaz supply may run out
- GARETH Ainsworth admits he will leave QPR to further his playing career if he fails to break into Jim Magilton's team during the coming months.
- The Rangers veteran, who filled in as caretaker boss twice last season, has not played a competitive first-team game since May 2008.
- And League One side Millwall, who are managed by former Rs number two Kenny Jackett, are believed to have expressed their interest in borrowing the 36-year-old winger this season.
- But Ainsworth is determined to prove his worth at Loftus Road after being reduced to the ranks in Magilton's shake-up of the coaching staff.
- "It's early days and the idea of being involved in some capacity on the pitch is fantastic," he told the Times. "But if that doesn't happen maybe it will be elsewhere and I'll make that decision when it comes.
- "I want to do my best and see if I can get in the QPR squad. The lads and the fans all just treat me as Gaz and they know what they're going to get - whether I'm player, manager or kit man, I'll be giving 110 per cent and then we'll see what happens.
- "But I'll definitely be playing this season. I pride myself on being fit and I hope that'll stand me in good stead.
- "I might not have the skills of Hogan Ephraim, Rowan Vine or Akos Buzsaky, but I graft and put tackles in or get crosses over and I've got a few more years left of doing that."

- And, with the twin milestones of 500 appearances and 100 goals within sight, the winger hopes to emulate two former team-mates who have continued to play into - and beyond - their late thirties.
- "I'm very flattered that Micky Adams, who I've got massive respect for, put me in consideration for the next step in my managerial career," Ainsworth added.
- "But every manager I've spoken to said 'play as long as you can, do not hang those boots up until you cannot go any further' and that's what I'm going to do.
- "I look at people like Paul Furlong, and Graham Alexander at Burnley, and feel I can do that. Age is a preconception for a lot of people - I think you need to watch someone and make your judgment on that.

- The 20 year-old front-man today penned a three year contract at Loftus Road, and in doing so becomes Gary Waddock's seventh signing of the summer.
- A scorer of three goals in just seven first team starts last season, Blackstock - who is a quick, athletic and powerful predator - is in line to make his debut against Southend United this weekend.
- "It's great to be here,'' Blackstock told qpr.co.uk moments after putting pen to paper.
- "It had all gone a bit stale for me at Southampton and the chance to move to London was just too good to turn down. It's a fresh challenge for me and I couldn't be any happier.

Magilton keen on Foxes striker
Skysports.com understands Queens Park Rangers are closing in on the capture of Leicester City striker DJ Campbell.
The former Birmingham City man is not believed to be part of manager Nigel Pearson's plans and is expected to move on.
Campbell spent the second half of last season in the Championship with Blackpool, scoring nine league goals from 20 starts.
It now seems as though R's boss Jim Magilton is close to bringing the 27-year-old to the ambitious Loftus Road outfit.
Keeper on trial
Meanwhile, Magilton is also running the rule over experienced keeper Andy Marshall after handing him a trial.
The former Norwich, Ipswich and Millwall shot-stopper is out of contract after being released by Coventry over the summer.

- Jim Magilton chose to look towards the positives despite suffering his first defeat as QPR boss in Croatia tonight (Sunday).
- Leading thanks to Rowan Vine's first half goal, Rangers eventually succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to NK Karlovac.
- Magilton told www.qpr.co.uk: "I've learnt a lot more about my players tonight.
- "No-one likes losing, least of all me, but the lads have got some more game time in their tanks and that's the most important thing at this time of year."
- Karlovac's comeback occured around the time Magilton made wholesale changes to his line-up midway through the second half, but the gaffer wasn't using that as an excuse.
- "We always planned to make changes at that stage and it might have disrupted the side a bit, but I'm not going to say that was the reason we lost," he said.
- "It had a positive effect when we made changes on Wednesday, but it went the other way this evening."
- Magilton and the rest of the Rangers squad head back to London tomorrow, and the gaffer is relishing the opportunity to put the wrongs of this defeat to right in the upcoming friendlies.
- "I've leant a lot throughout the tour and we'll highlight those things to the lads over the coming days and weeks," he said.

- Rowan Vine marked his return to the QPR front-line with a goal, but Jim Magilton's men went down to a 3-1 defeat to PRVA Liga side NK Karlovac in Croatia tonight (Sunday).
- The R's front-man opened the scoring late on in the first half, only for the hosts - who begin their League campaign next weekend - to respond with three goals in a eleven minute purple patch, to the delight of a 2,000-plus home crowd.
- Zvonko Pamic equalised from the spot, before two goals in as many minutes from Matija Stefancic and Haris Redzepi handed the hosts a rather flattering victory.
- Magilton handed trialist Martin Lejsal a start in goal, with the keeper lining up behind a back four of Peter Ramage, skipper Fitz Hall, Kaspars Gorkss and Gary Borrowdale.
- Gareth Ainsworth and Hogan Ephraim occupied the wide midfield berths, with Matteo Alberti partnering Alejandro Faurlin in the middle of the park.
- Rowan Vine returned from injury to line up alongside Patrick Agyemang in attack.
- The first chance of note fell Vine's way in the eighth minute.
- A long through ball from Borrowdale caused hesitancy in the Karlovac rearguard, but despite beating his marker to the loose ball, Vine's connection was poor and home custodian Hrvoje Sunara gathered comfortably.
- The hosts, to their credit, were playing some neat stuff of their own, despite the long playing surface not making it conducive for free-flowing, quick passing.
- Karlovac's first attempt on goal arrived midway through the half.
- After picking the ball up inside his own half, Ivan Lajtman strode with purpose before letting fly from 30-yards with an effort that whistled wide.
- Josip Jerneic was next to try his luck, firing wide from an acute angle after the R's were punished for relinquishing possession far too cheaply in their own half.
- And it was the hosts who continued to pose the greater attacking threat, with the lively Jerneic having a goal chalked out for offside eight minutes before the interval.
- Rangers were continually frustrated by a combination of poor officiating and the theatrics of the Karlovac players, but their despair was short-lived.
- Faurlin's quick thinking from a quickly taken free-kick paid dividends when he spotted Vine making a break on the edge of the penalty box.
- And having got goalside of his marker, the shaven haired front-man slotted home at the second attempt from the edge of the six-yard box to hand Rangers a one goal lead.
- That's the way it stayed until the break, at which Magilton introduced Gavin Mahon and trialist Alessandro Pellicori.- But it was that man Vine who nearly made it two in the 53rd minute, firing a fierce drive on target, which Sunara parried before gathering at the second time of asking.
- The inevitable changes followed minutes later, with Messrs Routledge, Buzsaky and Leigertwood all entering the fray, before Magilton introduced four more players midway through the half.
- Pellicori's height made him a threat from set-pieces and from a Buzsaky corner in the 69th minute, the Italian forward glanced wide.
- Play switched quickly to the other end though and the hosts were awarded a spot-kick when Lejsal was adjudged to have tripped the roaming Stefancic and Pamic stepped up to send the giant Czech the wrong way from 12-yards.
Stefancic was the pick of the hosts' attacking players and he made it 2-1 eleven minutes from time, with an audacious effort from the left angle of the penalty box, that left Lejsal clutching at thin air.

Q & A with Mark Adolph
We caught up with Mark Adolph and asked questions relating to his dad, who invented Subbuteo and how his life was shaped by the game and by his dad’s fame also….
- Can you remember your very first game of Subbuteo and when was that? What was the score?
MA: I suppose my first game ever must have been against my Dad, but from an early age I remember just flicking players around in a very haphazard way. When I was old enough to play properly, Dad and I played on a very regular basis, on a table we had set up permanently, and I lost every time!
He never let me win and was always very competitive, so to beat him, or even to score I goal I had to learn to play at my best. For years I just could not win, but my game was steadily improving, and eventually, when I was about twelve or thirteen years old, I DID beat him fairly and squarely and I remember quite clearly that the score was 2-1. That was a momentous result for me, and from that day on I just got the feeling that Dad had to up his game when we played. There was no quarter given on either side and it was all, sadly, very competitive.
- Were your friends jealous/envious of you growing up with Dad, the inventor of Subbuteo, when you could get any team that you wanted? And can you still get teams etc, that no one else can get?
MA: No, I don’t think they were at all. To be honest, I don’t think it ever registered with them. It was just friends gathered together to play games of Subbuteo - like millions of other kids did at the time. I am sure that Dad did slip some of my friends the odd team if they wanted and they were happy with that. But certainly there was no envy involved at all. As far as still getting rare teams etc, I do have a fair few teams now, tucked away in a box somewhere, but the rare teams are now bought up by the avid collectors. None of mine I would call particularly rare. Just FREE!!
What was the best game of Subbuteo you have played or have seen being played and why?
MA: I think the best game I have played is any game in which I have won. I used to enjoy watching Dad play, mainly because he played the game how he had always intended it to be played - and that is quite slowly. It bit like a chess match I suppose. He was able to execute inswinging corner kicks which was a sight to behold - a feat which I have been told by tournament players is impossible, but the fact is I witnessed these first hand and know it is possible.
You published a book back in 2006 entitled “Growing Up With Subbuteo - My Dad Invented The World’s Greatest Football Game” How was it received by the hardcore Subbuteo fans and the ordinary punters alike?
MA: My book was received very well I think. There are other books around that just give the history of the game, but I felt that I was in a unique position to give an insight into what went on behind the scenes at Subbuteo and also give a personal account of the life of Peter Adolph. This was always my aim when writing my book and to steer away as much as possible from the exact history, as this information is readily available through other sources. I think the hardcore Subbuteo fans enjoyed it as they were able to get a grip on what made Peter Adolph tick and I believe that anyone reading it who was perhaps not a complete Subbuteo fan, found it to be a very “human” story. I hope that was the case anyway!
Are you proud to be labelled the “ son of Peter Adolph, the inventor of Subbuteo”, or does it get to you at times?
MA: Of course I am proud, but the strange thing is that it is only since Dad died in 1994, that I can look back and actually appreciate what Subbuteo meant to so many people, and see Dad as the inventor rather than just my father. When I was young and Subbuteo was at its peak of popularity, It never occurred to me that my Dad was doing anything any different to everyone elses Dad. What Dad did and was heavily involved in was just “what Dad did”. If that makes any sense. It never meant that much to me. In hindsight, which is a great thing, I wish I had been able to be more aware of what was going on.
Nowadays, I am always happy to talk about Subbuteo and have done quite a few interviews on radio and local television and the press. I suppose I feel privileged that Subbuteo is still in peoples consciousness after sixty odd years.
What was the team you played the most in Subbuteo and why?
MA: Dad was, and I am a QPR supporter, so there was always a battle between us as to who would play Subbuteo with the QPR team. I always lost in the choice of team and Dad played with his QPR side and I more often than not played, using the Man City team. At the time, the late sixties and early seventies, my second team was Man City, as it had players like Colin Bell, Frannie Lee, Mike Summerbee.
What makes Subbuteo so popular even after so many years especially today with the rise of the Computer and Console Football games like Football Manager and Fifa series Pro Evolution Soccer?
MA: Dad was asked in the mid eighties, when these football console games started to appear, what his thoughts were on the subject, and he replied that he felt that there was really no competition between the two genres and they could live quite easily side by side. I think up to a certain point he was correct, but with the advancement of new technology and the high quality graphics that are now available, these have taken over from the more tactile games like Subbuteo.
Of course, Subbuteo is still thriving in what I like to call an underground state, despite it not being readily available in retail outlets, despite the re launch in 2000 by Hasbro’s with their Subbuteo Dream Team package. Tournaments are still played worldwide, and clubs appear to be thriving and there are many people who are still avid collectors of Subbuteo, from the very rare teams and accessories to the more run of the mill items which they use for playing.
Did your father have any regrets in regards to the game and were there any ideas that he had that did not see the light of day, and could you give us a few examples if there were?
MA: I believe his only regret was that he sold Subbuteo to Waddingtons far too early in the company’s development in 1969. At the time, it seemed a good idea and the deal that was offered was too good to pass up. He sold Subbuteo for £250,000, which in 1969 was a huge amount of money - maybe around ten million in todays terms. He felt that under the Waddingtons umbrella, his brand of Subbuteo that he had built up over many years had lost its personal and hands on appeal. It had gone from what was basically a cottage industry to being just another brand in a large conglomerate.
Having sold up, he still could not let go and Dad and myself, had a cheeky idea to develop a very similar game to Subbuteo, but with different and unique accessories and try to sell it back to Waddingtons. Prototypes were produced and a small run of games produced, but, quite rightly so, Waddingtons refused to play ball with our new game, and promptly slapped an injuction on Dad to stop any more similar games being produced. It was fun though!
What lasting legacy do you think your Dad would have been most proud of? That the game is still being played to this day? Or that fans from all over the world play his game?
MA: I am sure that Dad would have been pleasantly surprised that the game is still going and that the brand name of Subbuteo is still very much in peoples consciousness, especially people of a certain age who were brought up with Subbuteo in the sixties and seventies.
Given that your Dad invented the game, how was he at playing the game? Was he an expert at it? And how are you at playing it? Do you enter competitions or do you take a back seat in those sort of things?
MA: I touched on this in a previous answer, but Dad was good, of course. He was able to make the players “dance”, and had a lovely deft touch - and an incredible hard and accurate shot.
His one downfall, I have to admit, was that he did tend to bend the rules whilst a game was in progress, to suit himself. It was done in jest most of the time, but who was anyone to question him!! When I played a lot during the seventies, I was reasonably adept at playing Subbuteo, and always my yardstick was how well and how convincingly I beat Dad!
I never played in competitions, as to be honest I was never up to that standard. These competition players are a joy to behold when playing at the top of their game. Nowadays though, it seems to me that competition Subbuteo is a far cry from the early days, mainly due to the fact that the bases are very different and do not have any spin capability, so the game ends up being played in straight lines. I suppose it is progress but I admit to being stuck firmly in the seventies, where Subbuteo is concerned!

- SWANSEA CITY chief Paulo Sousa wants to bring Fiorentina striker Samuel Di Carmine to the Liberty Stadium.
- Sousa worked with Di Carmine, 20, during his brief stint as QPR boss last season, and the former Juventus and Inter Milan star has approached the Serie A club about taking Di Carmine on a season-long loan.

We caught up with Mark Adolph and asked questions relating to his dad, who invented Subbuteo and how his life was shaped by the game and by his dad’s fame also….
- Can you remember your very first game of Subbuteo and when was that? What was the score?
MA: I suppose my first game ever must have been against my Dad, but from an early age I remember just flicking players around in a very haphazard way. When I was old enough to play properly, Dad and I played on a very regular basis, on a table we had set up permanently, and I lost every time!
He never let me win and was always very competitive, so to beat him, or even to score I goal I had to learn to play at my best. For years I just could not win, but my game was steadily improving, and eventually, when I was about twelve or thirteen years old, I DID beat him fairly and squarely and I remember quite clearly that the score was 2-1. That was a momentous result for me, and from that day on I just got the feeling that Dad had to up his game when we played. There was no quarter given on either side and it was all, sadly, very competitive.
- Were your friends jealous/envious of you growing up with Dad, the inventor of Subbuteo, when you could get any team that you wanted? And can you still get teams etc, that no one else can get?
MA: No, I don’t think they were at all. To be honest, I don’t think it ever registered with them. It was just friends gathered together to play games of Subbuteo - like millions of other kids did at the time. I am sure that Dad did slip some of my friends the odd team if they wanted and they were happy with that. But certainly there was no envy involved at all. As far as still getting rare teams etc, I do have a fair few teams now, tucked away in a box somewhere, but the rare teams are now bought up by the avid collectors. None of mine I would call particularly rare. Just FREE!!
What was the best game of Subbuteo you have played or have seen being played and why?
MA: I think the best game I have played is any game in which I have won. I used to enjoy watching Dad play, mainly because he played the game how he had always intended it to be played - and that is quite slowly. It bit like a chess match I suppose. He was able to execute inswinging corner kicks which was a sight to behold - a feat which I have been told by tournament players is impossible, but the fact is I witnessed these first hand and know it is possible.
You published a book back in 2006 entitled “Growing Up With Subbuteo - My Dad Invented The World’s Greatest Football Game” How was it received by the hardcore Subbuteo fans and the ordinary punters alike?
MA: My book was received very well I think. There are other books around that just give the history of the game, but I felt that I was in a unique position to give an insight into what went on behind the scenes at Subbuteo and also give a personal account of the life of Peter Adolph. This was always my aim when writing my book and to steer away as much as possible from the exact history, as this information is readily available through other sources. - Having been named as part of Iain Dowie's backroom staff at the start of last season and then gone on to fill in as Caretaker Manager on two occasions during the 2008/09 campaign, Ainsworth made new R's gaffer Jim Magilton aware of his intentions to be treated solely as a playing professional earlier this summer.

- Having been named as part of Iain Dowie's backroom staff at the start of last season and then gone on to fill in as Caretaker Manager on two occasions during the 2008/09 campaign, Ainsworth made new R's gaffer Jim Magilton aware of his intentions to be treated solely as a playing professional earlier this summer.
- And speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk about the decision, Ainsworth said: "I think the best thing for everyone was for me to get back to being a player. Not for me, not for anyone else - but for QPR.
- "Last season came a little bit too early for me. We needed a fresh start this summer and the new set-up here is looking great."
- Ainsworth added: "It's still very early days, but we're looking really sharp.
- "It's great to be around the lads again and I'm loving every minute.
- "The gaffer knows what he's going to get from me - the leadership, the fitness and the will-to-win. I'll always keep grafting for this Football Club."
