CRAWLEY TOWN - Reds secure bright star
Crawley Town have completed the signing of highly rated youngster Dominic Shimmin from Queens Park Rangers.
Shimmin, 20, joins the club on a deal through to the end of the season and goes straight into the squad for Sunday’s Blue Square Premier match with Forest Green Rovers at the New Lawn.
Shimmin is a strong and aggressive central defender who is also very useful with the ball at his feet.
He joined Queens Park Rangers from Arsenal as a 17-year-old in March 2005 for a fee in the region of £80,000.
After some impressive displays for Ian Holloway’s side in pre-season, Shimmin made his debut for the Hoops on 20th August 2005 against Coventry City in the Championship. The youngster made two further appearances during his debut campaign.
Dominic continued his progression as a regular in QPR’s reserve team and impressed new Hoops boss John Gregory to earn a full home debut against Stoke City on the final day of the 2006/07 season.
Shimmin linked up with AFC Bournemouth in November, 2007 making two appearances for the Cherries on a short loan spell before Rangers re-called the player with the League 1 club’s financial problems.
Despite agreeing his release from the Lotus Road club at the end of January, Dominic is said to have bags of potential and proves a real coup for the club in securing his signature.
Dominic has been handed squad number 5.
The first exclusive interview with Dominic will appear on the official website before Sunday’s league match at Forest Green Rovers. Crawley
CRAWLEY OFFICIAL SITE - Manager Steve Evans on Shimmin signing
Manager Steve Evans is delighted with his latest capture ; securing Dominic Shimmin from Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
Shimmin agreed terms with the club before passing a medical on Friday, signing a deal until the end of the season.
Evans ended successfully a three month pursuit for Shimmin’s signature and the youngster arrives at the Broadfield with two glowing references.
Evans said: “Back in late October I tried to sign the lad, but at that time he opted for a loan move to AFC Bournemouth in League 1.
“Unfortunately for him the financial problems down at Bournemouth saw his club take the boy back at the earliest opportunity.
“I have spoken this week with both John Gregory and Mick Harford with regards to Dominic, and they gave him as a good as reference as any young player could get.
“In all honesty I did not need to ask about him as a player because I have watched him play in the reserves at Rangers on numerous occasions.
“He first came to my attention when he was outstanding against us in a closed door pre-season friendly.
“I have tracked him since with a view of perhaps adding him to the squad we have, and once again we have had to beat strong interest for his signature
“Dominic is a big, strong, aggressive centre-back who is also comfortable on the ball, and his pedigree in football for one so young is highly impressive when you see the fact Queens Park Rangers paid a substantial fee for him from Arsenal.
“I am absolutely delighted to add Dominic to what is already a young, vibrant and exciting squad here at Crawley Town." Crawley
