Shields Gazette - Toon defender heading for QPR?
NEWCASTLE United defender Peter Ramage is on the verge of joining manager-less Queens Park Rangers.
The Gazette understands the 24-year-old met Luigi De Canio – axed yesterday by the Loftus Road club – earlier this week, along with chairman Gianni Paladini.
Despite the dismissal, the three-year deal QPR offered Ramage, who has reluctantly turned down the offer of a new contract at Newcastle in search of first-team football, is still on the table.
Iain Dowie is among the front-runners to succeed De Canio.
And Dowie knows all about versatile Ramage, who would go to the west London club as a specialist right-back. Dowie had attempted to sign Ramage during his time at Coventry City.
Former United manager Sam Allardyce, and remarkably Zinedine Zidane, have also been linked with the vacant post, with the club's wealthy owners – including Formula 1 ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone – determined to put QPR back on the map.
Ramage is also being pursued by QPR's Championship rivals Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He made most of his Newcastle appearances under Carrow Road boss Glenn Roeder, and he would love to take him to the Norfolk club.
However, QPR remain in pole position to sign Ramage, who made 68 appearances for United. Shields Gazette
