Leroy Rosenior started his football career at Fulham in 1980, where he quickly became aware of racism on and off the pitch. In fact, he puts most of the low points in his career down to racial discrimination in one form or another.
He went into coaching hoping to be a positive role model, believing a black football manager would help to break down the barriers.

"But I was wrong," he says. "I left the game disillusioned with the attitude of many towards black and minority ethnic people and felt that to have any effect I needed to take a more hands-on approach."

That was when Show Racism the Red Card got in touch with him. "I realised that this could be an opportunity for me, through my own experiences, to help change things."

This time his hopes were proved right. He feels he's made more progress in his work with the charity during the past year than in the whole of his professional career.

"This has made me even more determined to help eradicate racial discrimination in our society, mainly through our young people, and many other likeminded people."

Mr Rosenior played for Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Charlton Athletic, Bristol City and West Ham United as a striker in the 1980s, as well as winning caps for Sierra Leone and the England Under-21 team. He went on to become one of the few black football managers in England, and works frequently for the BBC as a pundit. Unison

Jordan has company for promotion drive/By Wendy Gee

TOM Jordan won't be short of a travelling companion after completing his signing for Blue Square South outfit Eastleigh this week.

Also new in at the Silverlake Stadium is former Weymouth left-back Trevor Challis who, like Jordan, will commute to Stoneham Lane from the Bristol area.

Challis, a no-nonsense 32-year-old left-back formerly with QPR, Bristol Rovers, Telford and Shrewsbury, was part of John Hollins's summer clearout at the Wessex Stadium.
His forthright style made him a firm favourite with the Terras fans and, like centre-back Ashley Vickers who joined Eastleigh from Weymouth last season, his determination to win is legendary.

Jason Tindall, the ex-Weymouth player-manager, once commented, "One thing with Trevor is you know what you are going to get week in, week out.

"He is like Ashley Vickers - he would put his head in front of a train if it passed him."

advertisementTowering centre-back Jordan, who has finally put pen to paper for Eastleigh after months of wrangling with Havant & Waterlooville, is confident the arrival of players like himself and Challis will give the Spitfires the added steel they need for a BS South promotion push.

"I watched Eastleigh a few times last year and I've been aware of their progress through the leagues," said the 27-year-old son of Portsmouth coach and ex-Saints striker, Joe Jordan.

"Ambition is what it's all about for me and I know that the other lads who have come here are very ambitious as well. Everyone wants to take that extra step up."

Cooper misses out on target

Cooper insists Kettering Town will have to accept losing out on players to clubs with bigger budgets after revealing he missed out on one his transfer targets.
The Poppies boss had got to the stage where he was due to meet former Queens Park Rangers midfielder Stefan Bailey – who had looked set to sign a one-year contract with the Blue Square North champions last week.

However, the player failed to show and two days later signed a one-year deal with Blue Square Premier rivals Grays Athletic to become their ninth summer signing.

And while the situation with 20-year-old Bailey left Cooper frustrated, he conceded it is a problem the Poppies may have to get used to.
"I was due to meet him last Tuesday after we had agreed a one-year deal," the Kettering manager said.
"He didn't turn up and then signed for a club who were offering him more money. He has gone there for that reason and we can't moan about it.
"Yes, I am disappointed with the way it was handled. But what has
happened is a fact of life and we just have to carry on working hard to try and bring the best players in who are within the budget."
Cooper, however, remains undeterred in his search for fresh blood and he is confident of landing at least two or three more players before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August...." Report
