Ex-QPR midfielder, Peter Reid, is the new National Coach of Thailand. -
Bangkok Post/Tor Chittinand - Reid named as the next Thailand boss
Osieck ruled himself out of position
Former England international Peter Reid will be Thailand's new national coach, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) announced yesterday. Reid succeeds Chanvit Phalajivin, who quit last month, and will start work next month.
He was recommended to the FAT by the English FA.
''He has confirmed to me that he is ready to come and work in Thailand because he likes the country very much,'' said FAT president Worawi Makudi.
Reid and former German Holger Osieck were on the shortlist for the national coach job. However, Osieck, who was assistant to Franz Beckenbauer when Germany won the 1990 World Cup, turned down Worawi's offer.
''Osieck told me that he wanted to work in Germany or Europe,'' Worawi said. ''Therefore we had only one choice left _ Peter Reid.''
The former Everton player came to Thailand recently to open a football clinic and play in a local tournament along with Ian Rush and Viv Anderson.
''I will talk to him about the details of his salary and our plans and his plans,'' said Worawi.
Reid has a four-year deal.
Reid's first tournament as Thailand coach will be the Asean Football Championship in December. He will have time to watch the Thailand Premier League and pick the players.''We will allow him to select his own players,'' Worawi said.
He said he wanted Reid to help set up a national reserve side which could supply players to the full national team and this would be part of Thailand's ambition to reach the 2014 World Cup finals.
Reid, 52, who hails from Huyton, Liverpool gained 13 caps with England. In his playing career, he played for Bolton Wanderers, Everton, QPR, Man City, Southampton, Bury and Notts County.
A hard-tackling midfielder, Reid reached the height of his career in 1980s at Everton where he won two league titles (1985 and 1987), the FA Cup (1984) and the European Cup Winners' Cup (1985).
He was named the Professional Footballers Association's Player of the Year award in 1985.
After his retirement in 1989, he managed Manchester City, Sunderland, Leeds United and Coventry City as well as the England Under-21 side.
His most recent coaching job was at Coventry in 2005 when he left the club after just seven months in charge.
He is currently a Sky Sports pundit and a guest analyst on ESPN/STAR Sports. Bangkok Post

Daily Mail/Stephen Mcgowan - Is former QPR, Plymouth and Leicester boss Ian Holloway heading to Hearts?
Ian Holloway last night emerged as a strong contender to become the British boss of Hearts that club owner Vladimir Romanov is keen to appoint.
The former Leicester City, Plymouth Argyle and Queens Park Rangers chief is believed to have held detailed talks with the Romanov regime about taking over from Steve Frail.
Holloway, 45, does not yet hold all of the necessary coaching badges but his extensive experience of managing in the English lower divisions should be sufficient to overcome any potential stumbling block to him landing the Tynecastle post - should Romanov take his interest further.
Last night, Holloway said: 'I am definitely interested in the job.
'Hearts have spoken to my agent and they are aware of my interest, although I understand they have some concerns that I don't yet have my pro-licence.
'However, I've been in management for several years. I haven't had time to do all the badges, although I am currently working on my 'B' badge.'
Mark McGhee turned down the job to stay at Motherwell, while former bosses Jim Jefferies and Craig Levein have both been linked with a return to the post. Daily Mail
Guardian - Holloway in line for Hearts job'They have spoken to my agent at length and are aware that I'm interested in the job'
Ian Holloway has emerged as a contender to become the new manager of Hearts and says he would relish the challenge.
The former QPR, Leicester and Plymouth manager's agent has held talks with the Hearts, who have been searching for a permanent manager since January. Holloway, 45, left Leicester at the end of last season, following their relegation to League One.
Hearts have ruled out appointing a Scottish manager, with owner Vladimir Romanov dismissing what he called a "local footballing mafia", but an English coach such as Holloway could fit the bill.
Holloway said in the Scottish Daily Express: "Hearts have spoken to my agent at length and are aware that I am interested in the job. I believe they want to talk to me but they have concerns due to the fact I don't have my [Uefa] Pro Licence.
"I don't know if that is going to cause a problem but I am working towards it and my assistant Tim Breacker already has his full Uefa Pro Licence, so hopefully that will overcome the problem. We will have to see what happens but I am definitely interested in the job." Guardian

Kev went in for minor surgery on his toe on Thursday and has been recuperating at home with a gym programme. The procedure was successful and he'll begin his rehabilitation programme on Wednesday once we return from Portugal.
Over the next two weeks we'll gradually increase the amount of weight he can put through the toe and, once he's at the stage where he can run again, he'll start integrating in with the boys.

News of Ex-QPR: Simon Royce
Kent News online - Royce back in full training
Gillingham goalkeeper Simon Royce has returned to full training as he recovers from the ankle injury which kept him out of the final six weeks of the season.
The 36-year-old was one of the club’s most consistent performers last season and now looks set to return to full fitness before the start of the season.
Royce damaged ligaments and crushed muscle tissue in a training ground accident in March, forcing him to sit out crucial games in the club’s battle against relegation.
He faces competition for the number one jersey from new signing Alan Julian next season . The former QPR stopper’s chances staying number one have improved by getting involved in pre-season training.
He was among the 21-man squad which flew to Spain today for a four-day training camp at the luxury La Manga resort. Kent Newsonline
