"FORMER Bluebirds striker Steve MacLean scored twice for Plymouth in their reserve win against Cardiff City yesterday.
Scottish striker MacLean and ex-Cardiff midfield player Simon Walton were in a powerful Plymouth team at the new Cardiff Athletic Stadium.
Argyle fielded a far more experienced and physically stronger side than Cardiff, whose starting line-up included goalkeeper Peter Enckelman, Gabor Gyepes, Jon Brown and Darren Dennehy from the party who arrived back from the 2-2 draw at Watford during the early hours of yesterday.
MacLean scored both Plymouth goals and Walton was a big physical presence as the visitors earned a deserved win against a young City team.
Brown went close for Cardiff, shooting into the side netting after finding space inside the penalty area.
Cardiff included two triallists in teenage central defender Josh Ford, from Queens’ Park Rangers, and Liam Thomas, who was among the substitutes.
“The senior pros in our team were maybe a little leggy after the trip to Watford and the early morning return,” said City’s reserve team coach Neal Ardley.
“The young players did really well against far bigger opposition and overall I take more positives than negatives from the performance.”

Swansea Evening Post - Swans in race to sign a goalkeeper
SWANSEA City are hoping to sign a goalkeeper with top-flight experience before Saturday's clash with Southampton to cover for Dorus de Vries.
The big Dutchman underwent surgery yesterday on a depressed fracture of the cheekbone and a hairline fracture of the jaw.....
The 27-year-old may yet have to a metal plate inserted in his face to help the healing process and could wear a protective mask when he eventually returns in six or seven weeks' time.
"Dorus will be released from hospital today," added Martinez, who played down stories linking Swansea with veteran Walsall stopper Clayton Ince.
"I went to see him straight after the game and I was delighted by his attitude.
"Straightaway he was talking about when he would be back and saying he was gutted he would miss training yesterday.
"The recovery period is seven weeks, but knowing Dorus I expect him to get back quicker than that."
Martinez stands by his post-match claim that Queens Park Rangers skipper Martin Rowlands could have avoided the collision which did all the damage in Tuesday's goalless draw at the Liberty Stadium.
He added: "Their player came to the dressing room after the game because he wanted to apologise.
"It just reflects their overall performance. There were six yellow cards and on another night they would definitely have had someone sent off...."
.
But he said: "We are disappointed not to have beaten Ipswich and Queens Park Rangers, but you don't always get what you deserve.
"The QPR performance was another step forward for us because in many areas we were outstanding."
