Telegraph/Jim White -Qeens Park Rangers serve up 'fantasy' hospitality but not fantasy football
- Queens Park Rangers supporters have spent the past year gloating about their club's financial condition.
- Ever since Flavio Briatore, the motor racing entrepreneur, put together a consortium featuring Bernie Ecclestone and Lakshmi Mittal to buy into Loftus Road, Hoops followers have boasted that they are the richest club in the country.
Even the intervention of the Abu Dhabi royal family at Manchester City has not entirely undermined their claims: with the tumbling oil price, the west London club are probably a nose ahead.
Being rich, however, does not necessarily translate into success on the field. So far, under Briatore's stewardship, the club have seen far more sacked managers than they have trophies.
Still those Rangers fans who wonder where all the money is being spent (and wonder why, if they are that wealthy, the board need to put ticket prices up) can now rest easy. After the recent clash between Rangers and Birmingham City at Loftus Road, the visitors' managing director, Karren Brady, was purring with enthusiasm about the hospitality on offer. "The directors' areas out-plush even Abramovich's Chelsea," she said. "It's a fantasy boardroom experience."
- At last, something to show for all that cash. Though you do wonder whether "we've got the swankiest boardroom in the land" will catch on as a terrace chant." Telegraph
