- Loftus Road owner Bernie Ecclesone plans talks with Brazil legend
BRAZILIAN legend Zico has emerged as a shock candidate for the vacant QPR manager's job.
- Club co-owner Bernie Ecclestone is planning talks with the South American superstar although former Ipswich boss Jim Magilton remains favourite for the post.
He has been in negotiations for the past few weeks - but he is also attracting the attention of Aberdeen. Rangers are stalling on an appointment until they have spoken to CSKA Moscow boss Zico (above), who as a player was likened to Pele and fired 52 goals in 72 games for Brazil.
- The 56-year-old has previously managed the Japan national side and Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
It is not the first time QPR have set lofty ambitions - they tried to recruit Zinedine Zidane as boss in 2008. News of The World

- Damien Delaney to Ipswich?
- MIRROR - DEL BOY 30/05/2009 - Ipswich boss Roy Keane could swoop for £500,000 Republic of Ireland defender Damien Delaney, who fell out of favour at QPR under Iain Dowie and Paulo Sousa.
- Delaney's lack of matches at Loftus Road has affected his international prospects, as Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has not picked him in recent squads. Mirror
http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2....15875-21400196/

Loewestoft Journal/May 29, 2008 - Roy Keane eyes up move for Delaney
- IPSWICH Town manager Roy Keane is eyeing fellow countryman Damien Delaney as his first signing.
- The left-back, or central defender, would cost around half a million pounds with his current club Queens Park Rangers looking to recoup most of the £600,000 they paid Hull for his services 18 months ago....
- Delaney was a regular at Loftus Road under manager Luigi De Canio, but became an increasingly forgotten figure when first Iain Dowie and then Paulo Sousa took over the QPR hot seat.
- Delaney lost his place to Matt Connolly in the closing weeks of the season but returned for the final day defeat at Preston.
- With Dan Harding and Matt Richards having been released by Keane, Ben Thatcher is the only left-sided defender currently in the Ipswich squad.
- Keane is targeting this area to strengthen and the 27-year-old who was a successful Gaelic footballer in his younger days could fit the bill.
- Delaney, who played with Jon Walters while with Hull, made his international debut against Serbia 12 months ago. He made one further appearance - soon afterwards - against Colombia.
- When Hull won promotion to League Two in 2003/04, Delaney played as a central defender and won the player of the year award, scoring the last goal at Boothferry Park before the move to the KC Stadium.
- Delaney's contract at Loftus Road runs to the summer of 2011 although they are prepared to sell him if the price is right.
- He failed to earn rave reports last season but still chalked up 42 appearances and in total made 59 appearances and scored three goals for Rangers. Lowestoft Journal

Thirteen years ago today....: The Independent/Steve Bale - May 30, 1996 - Pounds 10m offer to link QPR with Wasps
- Combining football and rugby clubs, much touted since rugby union went professional nine months ago, will become reality if Queen's Park Rangers and Wasps accept bids from a music magnate who intends to bring them together at Loftus Road.
- Chris Wright, majority shareholder of the television and entertainment group Chrysalis, yesterday tabled an pounds 8m offer to buy the recently relegated football club from Richard Thompson. At the same time he proposed paying pounds 1.75m for a 49.9 per cent stake in Wasps, with another pounds 1m available for players' contracts.
- Rangers director Alan Hedges said that Wright's was just one of three offers for the football club. One is fronted by the former Guinness chief, Ernest Saunders.
- "I have been a supporter at Loftus Road for 20 years. That's why I want to get involved - because I am a fanatic," Wright said yesterday. He said that Ray Wilkins would definitely continue as manager, and would have money to buy new players.
- Wright believed he had the deal "in the bag" two days ago but said that Thompson "changed the parameters - and that usually means asking for more money".
- Wasps have asked for 21 days to consider Wright's offer, which is contingent on their playing first-team matches at Loftus Road and using their present facility at Sudbury near Wembley for second-team fixtures for both the football and rugby clubs, though Wright is reportedly interested in developing Sudbury if his QPR interest goes unrequited.
- Wright's plan received the immediate endorsement of their captain, the England flanker Lawrence Dallaglio, and the Wasps players.
- "The QPR link-up would undoubtedly be good for Wasps," Dallaglio said yesterday. "It would provide us with the best stadium facilities in the country and help us go into the new era of professional rugby in the right environment to produce a trophy-winning side."
- He added: "The surface is like a bowling-green and would be fantastic to play on." Quite how long it would stay in such pristine condition is arguable, though, remembering the experience of Cardiff City when the Cardiff rugby league side played at Ninian Park in the early 1980s. Then, the rugby, even without union's churningly intensive scrummaging, rucking and mauling, played havoc with the turf.
- That would be just one of the implications that the Football League would want to investigate. "Any member club wishing to share its ground with another sporting activity would need our permission," League spokesman Chris Hull said.
- "There would be obvious concerns as to the standard of pitches for League matches if another sport were to be staged on the same ground."
- There are also potential problems with the pitch size. On the few occasions rugby has used football facilities - for instance, when the North played New Zealand at Anfield in 1993 - the pitch has had to be shortened in order to accommodate even a truncated in-goal area.
- "These proposals not only offer both clubs financial security but also the chance to establish London's premier sporting venue at Loftus Road," Wright said. "We would ensure that Wasps and QPR retain their individual identities but are able to benefit from the huge marketing and commercial opportunities that the joint organisation would provide."

Seven years ago today: Nick Blackburn appointed QPR Chairman
May 30, 2002 -BBC Blackburn takes charge at QPR[/b]
- Nick Blackburn has been installed as the new chairman of QPR, following the club's exit from administration last week.
Blackburn was vice-chairman to Chris Wright, and then acting chairman following Wright's resignation last year.
Rangers chief executive David Davies had been strongly tipped to take on the role of chairman, having helped steer the club through its crisis period.
However, Davies will be staying in his current job, while director Ross Jones has taken over as chairman of parent company Loftus Road plc. BBC

EALING GAZETTE - Ainsworth is happy to be 'holding the baby'
May 28 2009 London Informer

- BEING caretaker manager or playing for the reserves is all part of his love affair with QPR, as far as Gareth Ainsworth is concerned.
- Ainsworth is still in his second spell of 'holding the baby' at Loftus Road as speculation continues over who will become the Rs' eighth manager in less than two years.
- Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell is the latest name linked to the vacancy, which owner Flavio Briatore seems in no hurry to fill.
- If the Renault F1 boss gets it wrong again, the year left on Ainsworth's playing contract may be long enough for him to become the new Tony Parkes of caretaker management.
- Parkes performed the role six times while on the staff at Blackburn Rovers.
- Ainsworth remains unfazed, insisting he's happy to keep the seat warm for as long as it takes.
- He said: "I'm sort of in love with QPR and I want the best for the club, the fans and the board, so whatever I have to do to help steady the ship, be it caretaker manager or playing in the reserves, I'm happy to do.
- "I've had 10 clubs in my career, so people have seen me as a journeyman. But if you look at the last eight years, there's only been one club on my CV."
- Meanwhile, Jermaine Beckford could be the man to fire next season's promotion push.
- The striker has been linked to Loftus Road after turning down a new contract at Leeds United.
- A move to Loftus would be a return to his roots for the 25-year-old, who began his career in non-league football at Wealdstone. Ealing Gazette

- Luton Official Site - Luton Official Site - [Kevin] GALLEN AGREES ONE YEAR EXTENSION
- There were plenty of happy faces at Kenilworth Road on Thursday when the Hatters confirmed that striker Kevin Gallen signed a new contract to keep him at the club until June 2010
- The 33-year-old was in instrumental form for the Town last season after joining permanently in January following a successful loan spell, scoring three times in 29 appearances.
Manager Mick Harford was delighted that the Londoner has pledged his future to the club for next season's challenge in the Blue Square Premier.
- He said: "When Kevin Gallen came to this football club he made a massive impression on me and the supporters.
"He can see a pass and bring other players into play and that's what he's all about.
"He's a character in the dressing room and offers us that little bit of experience which he can help pass on to the younger players in the squad.
"We've signed him on a one-year contract but my view is that Kevin has got a long term future at Luton Town and he will be given some coaching responsibilities next season." Luton

Kent News - Oli enjoys playing centre stage
-Dennis Oli The thousands of fans who attended Gillingham’s victory parade on Monday made their impact on the whole squad, but for Dennis Oli it was particularly special.
- The 25-year-old was one of the few players to have experienced a similar occasion after featuring in a QPR side which won promotion to the Championship five years ago. Back then he was strictly a fringe player at Loftus Road, but this time he was able to enjoy the limelight after playing an important role in the side.
- Oli is popular with the fans and is one of the few players with their own chant. Oli appreciates the support, but thinks it is more down to his surname than his performances.
- “I think it’s just because it’s an easy name and fits the chant” he said. “You get a chill down the back of your neck when you hear it, which I did at Wembley. It means a lot and gives me that extra bit of energy to keep going further when I’m tired.
- “I experienced promotion at QPR but I wasn’t as involved. This time it was unbelievable and a great feeling.”
- Oli was one of the stand out performers at Wembley, especially during a first half where he dominated Shrewsbury full-back Neil Ashton. For the winger it was a great chance to show what he can do.
- He said: “I got a lot of the ball and because the pitch was big I could express myself more. It was up there with my best performances for Gillingham and it was a good time to do it.” Kent News

Blackpool Gazette/Steve Canavan - Holloway hails 'fantastic' Evatt
- IAN Holloway has described Ian Evatt as "a wonderful lad" – though admits he made a mistake with him earlier in his management career.
- In his autobiography, Ollie, Holloway described an incident at QPR when he went on holiday for a week – and returned to find the chairman had signed Evatt for £150,000.
- The centre half, then at Chesterfield, had been on a list of possible targets but Holloway was angry that he had been brought in while he was away.
- But although it's a story which features in his book, published in 2007, Holloway says it doesn't mean there is any bad feeling between the pair.
- He says Evatt will almost certainly play a key part in his Blackpool team, though adds that the defender will of course have to earn the right to feature.
- "There are no problems between me and Ian – he is a fantastic lad," said Holloway.
- "He has done fantastically for Blackpool and I can't wait to work with him again. But Ian knows the way I am with players.
- "What I said to Ian back in our days at QPR together was that it was a mistake for the chairman to run off and get him because he was on our list and we were going to talk about him.
- "I said to the owner (Gianni Paladini) I'm going on holiday for a week, a little break. Two days later he's on the phone shouting that he's got Ian Evatt.
- "I just thought 'what is going on?' We had signed him without even giving the player a medical and you can't run a football club like that.
- "So I said to Ian 'hang on a minute this is what happened'.
- "In hindsight, if I could go back, I wouldn't have told Ian that. He didn't need to know that.
- "It was my frustration with the board and I didn't need to be that upfront with him.
- "I think it affected the kid. But at the time the defence wasn't my top priority.
- "I had Clarke Carlisle and Danny Shittu and what I was looking to do was buy a striker to add to the ones I already had. I think that QPR team would have done something if we had done that.
- "So I wanted to get that right and unfortunately Ian was caught in that drama."
- Holloway insists Evatt will be a big part of the team he intends to build at Bloomfield Road and he is even considering a style of play to suit the defender's game.
- "My ideas on how to defend and where I'm going to draw my line now in the Championship are a lot different from what they were," added Holloway.
- "I want us to go a few yards deeper and that suits big Ian. He can head it out and he can play there. I want to play football and he can do that.
- "I think he will be excited by what I'm talking about, although he'll have to earn his right in the team like everyone else."Blackpool Gazette

Mark Lazarus Recalled
When Saturday Comes - The Weekly Howl - Stickipedia A mine of information constructed from sticker cards
- Lazarus and Morrisey - - Mark Lazarus, Orient Wonderful World of Soccer Stars 1970-71 & Johnny Morrissey, Everton Wonderful World of Soccer Stars 1968-69
- It's very rare that a team's toughest player is a winger. But that was the case at Everton during Johnny Morrissey's heyday and at each of the five clubs to have employed Mark Lazarus.....
- Mark Lazarus was born in east London to a family that had produced a couple of professional boxers. He had fought as an amateur himself and was once sent off while with QPR for laying out an opposing full-back. Lazarus had three separate spells at QPR with whom he experienced his best career moment – scoring the decisive goal in the 1967 League final as Rangers came back from two down to beat West Brom 3-2. He was in the Crystal Palace side that won promotion to Division One in 1969 but left them that summer for Orient, retiring in 1971 after which he ran Lazarus Removals in Romford and a steam baths in Canning Town. Boxing connections led to another of his post-football jobs, when he was employed as a minder for the stable of snooker players managed by fight promoter, and current Orient chairman, Barry Hearn. - When Saturday Comes

Rowan Vine on QPR's Season and Prospects - QPR Official Site
VINE: IT'S TIME TO PRODUCE
- Rowan Vine insists it's time for the talking to stop and for the players to produce the goods next season.
- Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Vine - who is already working on a personal fitness programme ahead of the new campaign - is determined to start the new season with a bang come early August.
- "We've been saying big things are going to happen here for long enough, now it's time for us to do it," he said.
- "Last season was a disappointment in my eyes. You can point to the fact that we finished higher than we did the previous year, but I still don't think that's good enough."
- Vine added: "We lacked consistency last season. We had a patch where we did well, but we drew too many games, and that cost us.
- "Our play-off hopes were dashed by the games when we only took a point from when we were winning. That happened too often."
- Yet despite describing the campaign as a 'failure,' the former Birmingham City goal-getter believes the R's are amongst a cluster of Clubs in with a fighting chance of promotion next season.
- "The difference between the squads in this division isn't great. When you look at the teams that went up, and the ones that just missed out, there isn't that much between them.
- "We need to have the character to go on an unbeaten run. Too many times we were found wanting last season.
- "Next season we've got to have a big go at it, and if we fail to finish in that top six, then it would be a massive disaster."
- Vine believes fan-power will again play a part next season, adding: "The importance of the fans cannot be underestimated. They've been brilliant since I have been here.
- "We'll be trying to give the fans something to cheer about next season." QPR Official Site

The Guardian - Public inquiryDennis Bailey, former professional footballer who now coaches young people in the West Midlands
Interview by Nicholas Milton The Guardian, Wednesday 27 May 2009

How did you become involved in coaching disadvantaged young people?

I played for quite a few league clubs (including Watford, Birmingham City and QPR). After my football career was over, I became a self-employed coach. My church, Renewal, in Solihull, was looking for a way of connecting with young people in local schools, so I volunteered. Many of the children come from tough backgrounds. After one match, a kid robbed the local shop.

What's the best thing about coaching disadvantaged kids?

Helping them develop social skills through the sport. Football is a great medium for encouraging kids to take responsibility and work as a team. It also builds confidence and leadership, on and off the pitch.

And the worst?

Many of the kids at first can be difficult to control. They tend to swear a lot and spit, and often disagreements over the ball end in fights. I don't automatically get their respect, but it really helps being a footballer rather than their teacher or parent. They relate to you on a different level. And football teaches them to play by the rules.

What difference have you made?

I've banned swearing. As a result, their language is moderated, they have stopped fighting, and teachers tell me their concentration and schoolwork have improved.

You are the last player to have scored a hat-trick against Manchester United in a league match at Old Trafford. What do you remember about that match in 1992?

I was playing for QPR. United were top of the league. My team-mate, Andy Sinton, scored an early goal, then I got another before they pulled one back. After half-time, they piled on the pressure, but against the run of play I scored our third. Their confidence collapsed after that and I snatched my hat-trick in the last minute. Following that 4-1 defeat, United struggled to regain their winning form and Leeds beat them to the league title.

Can more be done to help disadvantaged kids become professional footballers?

We need more talent scouts from every level in the game to visit schools, as well as the amateur leagues.

Kilburn Times/Ben Kosky - Rangers' scouting net is full of holes
- QPR are missing out on young talent right under their noses, according to the manager of one of north-west London's most successful boys' teams.
- Vince Purdue, a Rangers fan who manages Mill Hill Rangers in the Harrow Youth League, has helped to develop players now making their mark with the likes of Tottenham and West Ham.
- Spurs winger John Bostock spent a summer playing for Purdue's team, while midfielder Josh Payne originally joined the club as a nine-year-old and recently made his Premier League debut for the Hammers.
- Payne, now 18, spent time on the books at Crystal Palace, Southampton and Portsmouth before West Ham offered him an apprenticeship - but the Rs could have snapped him up first.
- "I offered Josh to QPR and had discussions with [sporting director] Gianni Paladini about him, but they only wanted to give him a six-week trial," said Purdue.
- "He's a brilliant player and I'm surprised he hasn't been called up yet for an England side. I'm very happy that Mill Hill Rangers are producing good players, but gutted that QPR ignored him.
- "I haven't seen one QPR scout at an under-15 game, even though we've won the league for the fourth time in five years, plus the county cup and league cup.
- "There are scouts from Luton Town, Millwall, Norwich City - but not QPR, even though we're QPR-mad. Everyone at the club is, that's why we're called Rangers."
- Three other graduates of Mill Hill Rangers - Michael Kalou, Loni Manie and Matt Warner - are currently in the youth team at Watford, while a fourth, goalkeeper Joe Day, made his first-team debut for Rushden & Diamonds last season.
- But QPR have taken on one of Purdue's players - right-winger Bruno Andre from Colindale, who has been offered a four-year scholarship at Loftus Road.
- By contrast, Payne signed a one-year scholarship with West Ham and is now halfway through a two-year pro deal - and Purdue believes the Rs should be offering similar terms to 15-year-old Andre.
- "QPR obviously rate him and he loves it down there as well - he gets the train over to Harlington, while the boys at Watford get picked up by cab!" added Purdue.
- "But QPR are trying to sort out a deal before agents get involved, which I'm sure they will when Bruno turns 16 in October, and I don't think they want anyone else to see him.
- "They're trying to nick the kid for peanuts and I think he's worth more than that. I think QPR need an overhaul of their youth set-up - when I started watching them there were kids coming through all the time, now that just isn't happening.
Kilburn Times

Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - Rangers appeal for Aid... or Gigi
- QPR are set to offer former Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd the chance to succeed Paulo Sousa in the Loftus Road hot-seat.
- Rangers are anxious to appoint a new boss rapidly to try and reverse a severe slump in season ticket sales - and preferably without having to fork out compensation.
- Boothroyd fits the bill on that score, having been out of work since his exit from Vicarage Road last November and, just as importantly, boasts a CV that includes promotion to the Premier League.
- But, if the Rs fail to convince Boothroyd to become their seventh permanent boss in three years, they will turn their attention to one of the previous six - Lecce coach Luigi de Canio.
- De Canio left London for personal reasons just a year ago after hauling QPR from the relegation zone to mid-table safety - aided by a £6m spending spree - but is likely to be available again after failing to save Lecce from the drop to Serie B.
- But Boothroyd, who coached youth teams at Peterborough, Norwich and West Brom and also worked with the first-team at Leeds before joining Watford in 2005, is thought to be the board's first choice...." Kilburn Times

Kilburn Times/Ben Kosky - Balanta's R one for the future
- QPR midfielder Gavin Mahon is tipping teenage team-mate Angelo Balanta for a bright future in Championship football.
- Balanta made 13 appearances for Rangers last season and, at the age of 18, is generally regarded as the best prospect to emerge from the youth team in several years.
- The experienced Mahon, who filled in as Rs captain on several occasions last year, said: "I train day in, day out with these players and if you look at Angelo, he's got everything.
- "He's got two good feet and he's well-balanced for a youngster. If he keeps his feet on the floor, which I'm sure he will - that's the sort of character he is - he can have a good future in the game.
- "This isn't an easy league, whether you're an older pro or a youngster coming in, and with youngsters you have to give them encouragement instead of going on at them.
- "They're going to make mistakes, as we all do, but if you can play in this league and handle the physical side and the hustle and bustle, you'll be good enough."
- Balanta, who can play as an orthodox striker or in a wide role, also spent a successful two-month loan with Wycombe Wanderers last season on their way to promotion from League Two.
- The teenager could be lining up against Wycombe when Rangers travel to Adams Park for a pre-season friendly on Tuesday July 28, kick-off 7.45pm.
- The teams last met two years ago to the day, with the Rs winning courtesy of a Martin Rowlands free-kick. Kilburn Times

Goodbye Administration. Welcome ABC Loan!

- Seven Years Ago today, May 27, 2002: QPR Exited Administration - and entered the era of the ABC Loan, with fans wondering why the club had left Administration with a ten million pound debt. Not to mention, fans wondering exactly WHO was behind the ABC Loan.

BBC/Dave McIntyre Monday, 27 May, 2002 - Survival boost for QPR
- Second Division QPR have been taken out of administration.
The administration order was lifted following a hearing at the High Court on Monday.
- Former chairman Chris Wright took a substantial write-off on his loans and handed back a large part of his shareholding in the club a few weeks ago.
We have faced some javascript:void(0)tough decisions and learned some hard lessons
David Davies QPR chief executive
His decision helped enable the repayment of debts to all the Loftus Road club's creditors.
Loftus Road chief executive David Davies said in a statement: "This is wonderful news and the conclusion of one of the darkest periods in our history.
"We have faced some tough decisions and learned some hard lessons.
"These are lessons which many clubs are now having to learn.
"We will come out of this experience in a much stronger position.
Wright retains stake
"Gone are the days when players will be paid excessive wages.
"When we first went into administration, QPR was highlighted as being run on the economics of a madhouse.
"What we have done is bring some sanity to the club."
Wright, the main creditor as well as owner, agreed to accept half of the £6.7m he was owed.
But he has retained a 25% stake in the company as well as ownership of the club's training ground.
Rangers failed to get out of the First Division despite a massive investment resulting from a floatation in the summer of 1996.
They were hard hit the money from 'parachute' payments given to relegated clubs ran out.
With a wage bill already far too big for the First Division the club dropped into Division Two last year and in April 2001 administrators BDO Stoy Hayward were called in.
Transfer embargo lifted
But as many clubs struggle following the collapse of ITV Digital, QPR find themselves in a strong position.
They have not budgeted for television money and have slashed their wage bill.
It has been an awful period for QPR but I'm calling us 'the orange club', because the future is bright
Ian Holloway
QPR manager
Current manager Ian Holloway also has highly-rated players in his squad such as Richard Langley, Clarke Carlisle, Terrell Forbes and Dan Shittu.
Holloway said: "QPR were the first into the tunnel and are coming out of it just as everyone else is going in.
"There must be a lot of worried clubs but we have learned hard lessons and now we are on solid ground at last.
"It has been an awful period for QPR but I'm calling us 'the orange club', because the future is bright."
Holloway will now be looking to add to his squad having been restricted by a transfer embargo, which will be lifted with immediate effect after the club was taken out of administration. BBC

Bucks Free Press - May 31, 2002 On QPR Out of Administration.
- QPR on road to cash recovery QPR or to be strictly accurate, parent company Loftus Road plc are out of administration following a High Court ruling on Monday.
The plc and QPR went into administration in April 2001, but following a refinancing package finalised by the directors last week, the company has been able to pay off its creditors.
Chief executive David Davies said: "This is wonderful news and the conclusion of one of the darkest periods of our history. Having the administration order lifted marks the end of more than a year of tough financial decisions and hard work.
"This would not have been possible were it not for the commitment of coaches, players and backroom staff and the hard work of our administrators."
Mr Davies said, however, that one of the major factors in pulling the club back from the brink had been the supporters: "None it would have been possible without the support of the QPR fans. After seeing the club placed in administration, relegated and then lose more than half of our squad, they stuck by us in record numbers and continue to do so."
He went on to say that he felt the hard lessons learned would benefit the club in the future - "gone are the days when players will be paid excessive wages" - at a time when many clubs are on the verge of calling in the administrators. In the past, QPR had been highlighted as being run "on the economics of the madhouse."
But Mr Davies warned that although coming out of administration was a major step forward, much remained to be done on and off the field, although he was optimistic that the hard work of manager Ian Holloway and others would bear fruit.
"We don't suddenly have a magic wand to wave and make everything better. We are not suddenly flush with cash. With hard work and passion, we will improve this club but by bit and season by season.
"Ian Holloway has restored pride to the team and brought together a hungry and talented bunch of players. With the handcuffs of administration finally removed, we can start to build a solid future for QPR." Bucks Free Press

May 30, 2002 - BBC - May 30, 2002 - Blackburn takes charge at QPR
- Nick Blackburn has been installed as the new chairman of QPR, following the club's exit from administration last week.
Blackburn was vice-chairman to Chris Wright, and then acting chairman following Wright's resignation last year.
Rangers chief executive David Davies had been strongly tipped to take on the role of chairman, having helped steer the club through its crisis period.
However, Davies will be staying in his current job, while director Ross Jones has taken over as chairman of parent company Loftus Road plc. BBC

Mirror - QPR move in on Blackwell
- Kevin Blackwell could quit Sheffield United to make a surprise move to ambitious QPR before the weekend.
- Blackwell was frustrated with the Blades after their play-off defeat and could meet QPR in the next few days.
- He knows he will have to slash the payroll at Sheffield after they missed out on a £ 60m fortune. And he could fancy a crack at QPR''s promotion push after admitting the lack of parachute payments will hit the Blades hard. Mirror

Brief mention in Daily Mail/Alan Biggs
McCabe desperate to keep Blackwell at Sheffield United after quit threat
- Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe held urgent talks with Kevin Blackwell last night after being left stunned by his manager’s revelation that he might quit in the wake of the club’s Wembley defeat to Burnley.
- McCabe had no intention of replacing Blackwell and hopes it was a heat-of-the-moment reaction by Blackwell who was clearly distraught after losing the Championship Play-off Final.
- The Blades chief went into the meeting with a resolve to persuade Blackwell to continue — providing he confirms that he overreacted and pledges his commitment to the job amid rumours of interest from QPR. If there are any grey areas, a swift parting is likely. Mail

Rehman on Being Freed by QPR...Other QPR Snippets

[Zesh Reman blogs about being freed - but without actually mentioning QPR!]
Zesh Rehman - Setanta The end of player power?
- This is the first time in my career that I have been a free agent in the off-season and I view it as a positive as it means a potential club will not have to pay a fee for me and can save some money.
-In the current climate, I would say the power has shifted in favour of the clubs as they have a large pool of unattached players to choose from. At Bradford, where I spent the second half of the season on loan, seven or eight players have not had their contracts renewed due to the way the game is going and clubs having smaller squads and budgets to operate on next season.
- I thoroughly enjoyed my three months at Bradford, playing 17 games in four positions and also making positive inroads with the local Asian community in terms of improving integration and cohesion. The number of Asian fans increased largely due to the groundwork of visiting the local schools and speaking to the kids first hand. Everyone from the chairman, manager, fans and local community made me feel at home.
- I have spoken to a few clubs but did not get the same feeling for them as I did for Bradford, and to be fair they are not probably bigger clubs than Bradford even though they are in a higher league.
- Clubs let you know their interest by either contacting you directly or enquiring via your agent if you have one. There is no set time in how quickly a deal can be concluded, it comes down to both parties, the player and the club being happy with the deal. Deals have been known to break down at the final hurdle due to small details, small details that could be the difference maker to the player or the club. On the other hand, talks can stop early if a player’s wage demands are too high or the club’s offer is too low. It’s all about reaching a sensible compromise.
- Luckily, I have had a few offers from clubs to choose from. However these are uncertain and anxious times for lots of players up and down the country who are looking for a club. Some clubs will have two or three targets for each position so the competition is fierce.
- In the off-season it’s down to the individual players to keep fit by doing runs, going to the gym and generally keeping things ticking over. It’s important to have a rest to allow the body and mind to recover. Most clubs provide the players with a program to stick to and it’s up to the player to be professional and return in shape. If you don’t, you will soon be found wanting!
- I tend to have a few weeks of resting and then start slowly to get things going again so I can return in decent shape. I am looking forward to pre-season and, ideally that will be at Bradford, as I loved my time at the club and really settled in well. Hopefully, a good deal can be concluded fairly soon so I can hit the ground running next season and embrace all the challenges on and off the pitch" Setanta

"- Yes I persuaded Flavio Briatore to join me and put some money into buying Queens Park Rangers, the old and long-established club that had fallen on hard times. I had a look at buying Chelsea - but it was too complicated an issue and needed far too much effort to sort out the books. Liverpool, too, and Manchestyer United were considerations, too, but in the end I figured I lived too far away ... 200 or so miles ... to buy into teams so distant from my home in London. I didn't fancy the idea of traipsing up and down the country on top of all the travelling I do on F1 business.

Briatore's Perspective: Charles Sale/Daily Mail - QPR bosses got me wrong, says Flavio
- Renault motor racing boss Flavio Briatore has pledged his long-term commitment to Championship club Queens Park Rangers, despite the crazy turmoil at Loftus Road since he took charge 18 months ago.
- Briatore, at the Monaco Grand Prix, says: ‘I believe that I can successfully run a Formula One team and a football club. I have only had a short time in football and now is not the time to judge me. That’s for the future, as I have no intention of quitting QPR.’
- The 59-year-old Italian, who had his 29-year-old TV hostess wife Elisabetta Gregoraci on his arm, says he’s been wrongly portrayed as interfering in team affairs, although every QPR boss claims he does.
- The fact that Briatore had different views about strikers Gavin Mahon and Dexter Blackstock from those of Iain Dowie and Paulo Sousa was pivotal to both managers’ departures. But Briatore claims: ‘I send emails but I don’t get in the way. Dowie was the only manager I sacked. Sousa was dismissed for breach of contract. We have had so many applicants to be our new manager and we will decide soon.’ Daily Mail

Stan Bowles and Rodney Marsh Remembered

RODNEY MARSH: The Guardian, Thursday 21 May 2009 Marsh and Sir Alf
1960s and 70s legend Rodney Marsh on his relationship with Alf Ramsey and how workhorses still seem to take precedence in the England side over skilful risk-takers
- The thing you have to remember is that Alf Ramsey and I came from the same place. We were both cockneys. The other thing is that Alf tended to speak in a very poncey plum-in-the-mouth way. It was all "Oh hello Rodney and how are you?". To me it was all complete bollocks. The last time I was picked by him for England we had a team talk before the game and Alf told me we all had to work harder. "Rodney you in particular," he said in his accent. Then he said: "if you don't work hard I'm going to pull you off at half time." And I said: "Christ, at Man City all we get is a cup of tea and an orange."
- Nobody laughed. And not only that, but it was the last time I ever got picked. There was a direct correlation between that sarcastic remark and me not playing again. But to be fair to Alf I also hadn't played well for England. That's not an excuse or a reason; it's just an explanation.
- Still, I had a good run: I think Stan Bowles only played twice. People like Charlie George and Tony Currie only got a couple of games. But I don't blame Alf Ramsey; I blame myself.
- All that stuff about maverick players, it was the culture of British football at the time and I don't regret for one minute my attitude towards football. I'm not speaking for any other player but I was born a free spirit and I played the game the same way. You either loved it or you hated it. I make no excuses for that and I wouldn't change a thing. Did that contribute to me to only getting nine caps? Probably.
- English football has always been scared to do the outrageous. I think you could name on one hand people like Paul Gascoigne, Rodney Marsh, Matt Le Tissier, Peter Osgood of that ilk who have been given a chance. The average England player has a great engine, hard-working. You could argue that Wayne Rooney could be that Maverick-type player and, probably, the big difference is that Wayne Rooney runs himself into the ground for the team, and I never did that, I always felt there were other players to do that. One of the biggest compliments paid to me was in Alfredo di Stéfano's book where he says that Rodney Marsh was the most gifted footballer outside of Brazil. That made me feel good. I played against his Valencia team twice and we fucking murdered them.
- But you couldn't have a team of Rodney Marshes. You'd never get the ball. I would hold my hand up and say that I was a luxury player and I make no bones about that. But I would argue the point that my generation of player underachieved. Why players like Bowles and George didn't get more caps you'd have to ask Ramsey. But I would say one thing: If you count the caps of Frank Worthington, Bowles, Tony Currie, Peter Osgood, Rodney Marsh and Alan Hudson, Carlton Palmer has got more caps than all those players combined. I think that tells you something. During Graham Taylor's time England had a midfield with Andy Sinton, David Batty, Carlton Palmer and Geoff Thomas. How the fuck are you going to win a World Cup with a team like that?

STAN BOWLES - Daily Mail/Ivan Speck - Football icon Stan Bowles doesn't care who goes down... as long as it's Sunderland
- A Mancunian showboater of the Seventies often mistaken as a Cockney wide boy would be the last person you would expect to carry a mischievously burning desire to see Sunderland relegated.
- Then again, Stan Bowles never did stereotypes.
- The hair is white now, the face weathered by age and a steady diet of cigarettes and alcohol, yet the chirpiness which once saw him knock the FA Cup off its perch at Roker Park and cause a riot that shattered Sunderland's post-Cup final honeymoon still swims impishly in the crystal-clear blue waters of his 60-year-old eyes.
- What a player: Bowles (left) with model Jenny Clarke in 1976
'I don't care who goes down on Sunday as long as it's Sunderland,' Bowles says, a half-smile running across his lips.
'They don't like me to this day up there. Do I like them? No, not really.'
- One of English football's generation of entertainers - alongside the likes of George Best, Charlie George, Alan Hudson and Rodney Marsh - Bowles cared not for protocol or respect, especially on that Roker evening in May 1973.
Second Division Sunderland had beaten mighty Leeds to lift the FA Cup. Four days later, they hosted already-promoted Queens Park Rangers in their final league game.
- The Cup was paraded, celebration was in the air. Not content with kicking a ball at the Cup and tipping it off its table, Bowles goaded the Sunderland players throughout QPR's 3-0 win, in which he scored twice.
- One Wembley hero, midfielder Mick Horswill, was sent off for a tackle on him, and Bowles then pulled the ultimate stunt on keeper Jim Montgomery, whose double save had passed into Cup final legend.
- 'I went round him and put the ball almost on the line waiting for him to scramble across his goalmouth before I tapped it in,' Bowles said.
- 'That was it. All of a sudden from the top end the fans came on the pitch. It was madness, seeing a few thousand people running at you. I made sure I got down the tunnel sharpish.
The man: Stan Bowles strides confidently away from the goalmouth after scoring against Manchester United for QPR
- 'The fans had seen I was taking the p***. Asking the Sunderland players how the f*** they had beaten Leeds and getting them angrier and angrier by the moment.
- 'We weren't allowed to go out after that game because the fans gathered outside the hotel where we were staying. I think they got fined for it afterwards, for something I caused. F****** good job. I never played at Sunderland again. If I'd seen the fixture coming up, though, I'd have thought about inventing a groin strain to get out of playing there.
- 'If I had a choice of who's going down on Sunday it would be them.'
- That's Stanley Bowles. As irreverent and irrational today as during a playing career that many believed could have been glorious had he committed as much attention to his football as he did to gambling. He was given his first racing tip at 16, when he pressed raincoats in a Manchester factory. He put a fiver on the horse at 10-1. It won. Just about the last time he backed a winner, if you believe the stories.
- 'I was renowned for being arrogant. I wasn't really. I just knew what I was doing on the pitch. When I was on my game I felt unstoppable and I let them know. I'd go past a fella trying to tackle me, look back at him and say, "Come on, get up, I'll let you have another go".
- 'That's why they never liked me in the England squad. Even the Liverpool players didn't really talk to me. Kevin Keegan was all right, but the rest - Emlyn Hughes and Phil Thompson among them - were a bit frosty because I'd taken the p*** when we played them.'
- Bowles walked out on England after being substituted against Northern Ireland. He would later walk out on Brian Clough and a place in a Nottingham Forest European Cup final side - 'That medal would be worth 20 grand now'.
The tales he tells are part of his after-dinner speaking routine. How he was sacked by Manchester City for missing a flight to play Ajax. 'I told them I was on my way, but what I didn't know was that the flight was delayed for three hours. I didn't actually try to go at all.'
- How he was shown the door again after five weeks at Bury. 'I took a cab to training and told the manager to take the fare out of my wages. He wouldn't, so I jumped back in the cab and went back to Manchester.'
- How he would arrive at the QPR ground from the bookies at 2.50pm and throw on his kit, how he asked fans with radios which horse had won the 3.20pm at Kempton.
Then there were his drinking sessions with the late George Best.
- 'It was always at an Irish pub in Chelsea Harbour. George used to have white wine and soda in a glass bigger than a pint glass and double brandies with it. I couldn't keep up with him. I normally just drank beer, so I'd come out of there and start walking the wrong way, over one of the bridges. That's how drunk I was.'
Thankfully for Sunderland fans, they don't make them like Stan Bowles any more. Mail

Parejo Speaks
Real Madrid Official Site
"We want to defeat Osasuna"
Carlos Cristobal / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell
- Daniel Parejo was sad for not being able to give the fans a victory against Mallorca last night and praised Fabio Cannavaro for everything he's done for the Club.
- Yesterday was a sad farewell for the team...
Yes, it wasn't pleasant. We were all sad after the match. We wanted a victory because the fans deserved more. They've supported us all season and we were sad after the game because we would have liked to give them a victory.

How can you explain to people the situation the team is going through?
It's hard. Our morale dropped after the match against Barcelona. We practically lost the title, which naturally makes your motivation change. I think these games are hard to play, but the team's intention has always been to take three points, and it will be so again against Osasuna. It's our last game and we want to win.

How much has all the talk about renewing the squad affected the players?
It's a complicated situation, but I think we have to distance ourselves from everything that is being said and take things slowly. Whatever has to happen will happen. We simply have to play at our highest level and make good use of the playing time we each get.

How was Cannavaro's farewell for the squad?
Fabio has given us a lot. He received an incredible and well-deserved ovation for the hard work he's done since he arrived at Real Madrid. we are all a bit sad because we are losing a great team-mate. We wish him all the best. Nevertheless, there is still one game left and that should be the only thing in our minds. Once the season's over we will give him the farewell he deserves for everything the's done for the Club.

Which team would you rather won the Champions League final?
I want football to win, that is to say the team that truly deserves the victory. Real Madrid

Real Madrid Official Site
- Like most of their teammates, Dani Parejo and Gonzalo Higuain were visibly upset Real Madrid were unable to win their final home match of the season.
PAREJO
“I am happy that I was able to play, but am sad that we couldn't please the fans. They deserve it.”

“It was a tough match for both teams. We started off well by scoring early, but that's football for you. They scored three great goals and we couldn't respond.”

“We wanted to win for the fans and for us. Luck wasn't on our sidea and now we need to begin preparing for the next match. Osasuna are in a tough predicament.” Real Madrid

Goal.com - The Barcelona Loss Shattered Our Morale - Real Madrid Youngster Parejo
Real Madrid maintained their title chase for a long time, but the clasico defeat left them reeling...

Daniel Parejo has admitted that the hefty home defeat to Barcelona affected Real Madrid's confidence and he is now hoping they can muster up a win on the last day of the season.

Los Merengues slumped to a fourth consecutive defeat on Sunday when they were beaten by Real Mallorca and the run of bad form began when they were hit for six by their arch rivals earlier this month.

With a trip to Osasuna to come, Parejo hopes that Madrid can end the campaign on a high note by recording a win that would send their hosts in the Reyno de Navarra down.

"Our morale dropped after the match against Barcelona. We practically lost the title, which naturally makes your motivation change," he told the club's official website.

"I think these games are hard to play, but the team's intention has always been to take three points, and it will be so again against Osasuna. It's our last game and we want to win.

Parejo returned to Madrid in January after cutting short a loan spell at Queens Park Rangers and he hopes he will have a chance next season to prove himself and not be sold in the predicted summer clear-out.

"It's a complicated situation, but I think we have to distance ourselves from everything that is being said and take things slowly. Whatever has to happen will happen," he continued.

"We simply have to play at our highest level and make good use of the playing time we are given." Lucas Brown, Goal.com
