Tribal Football - QPR striker Simpson hopes for Arsenal recall
- Arsenal striker Jay Simpson was again on the mark for QPR in their 2-2 draw with Coventry City. The Gunners striker is on loan at QPR but after grabbing his eighth goal in 14 games would love the chance to step in for the long-term casualty Robin Van Persie at the Emirates.
- He said: "This is helping my development and I want to play at the top level. At the moment Arsenal have a lot of injuries so if I was back there, who knows. "When I play I'm always confident I'll score - even if it was in the Premier League."
- Simpson added: "I am with Rangers for the season. There is a call back but I don't know if it will be used.
- "I'm in touch with Arsenal and I know they come to all the home games but I'll just focus on my stuff
." Tribal Football

Standard/Ben Hunt - Gunner Jay Simpson is ready for a call to arms
- JAY SIMPSON hopes that his loan spell at Queens Park Rangers is going well enough to prove he is worthy of a future at Arsenal, writes Ben Hunt.
- The Gunners are in the midst of an injury crisis with Dutch striker Robin van Persie out injured for five months and Nicklas Bendtner still on the treatment table.
- Simpson, 20, is on loan at Loftus Road until the end of the season but has a recall option, and took his tally to eight goals in 14 starts for Rangers in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Coventry.
- He said: "I want to score goals at the highest level and I believe I can do that. I know Arsenal send someone to watch all my home games and they keep copies of my performances. Even with the injuries, though, I don't know what position I'd be in if I went back.
- "Scoring obviously can't have done my chances any harm and I'm still really close with the young guys at Arsenal." Standard

Sky Sports/Richard Bailey - Skysports Simpson eyes Gunners recall
QPR loanee believes he can help injury-hit parent club Arsenal
- Jay Simpson believes he can score goals at the top level and help Arsenal fill the void left by the injuries to strikers Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner.
The 20-year-old is currently on a season-long loan to Queens Park Rangers but insists he would be more than happy to return to the Gunners in their hour of need.
The young striker scored his eighth goal in 14 matches in the 2-2 draw with Coventry at the weekend and is confident he can transfer that form into the Premier League.
- Simpson admitted that he still keeps in touch with staff at Arsenal and with Van Persie and Bendtner set for prolonged spells on the sidelines recalling Simpson could be an option for Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.
- "The goal (against Coventry) won't have done me any harm and I keep in touch with the young Arsenal lads," he told the Daily Mirror.
- "I know the club come and watch all my home games and they've got copies of my performances, but it is out of my hands whether I get recalled or not - it's down to the staff there.
- "I want to play at the top level, so if this can help my development, then great. But they've picked up a lot of injuries at Arsenal at the moment and I'm confident I can score constantly in the Premier League." Skysports

Indian Football.comMilind Deora drives Youth Football
- Sunday, 29. November 2009 - IndianFootball.Com reporter
- Promotion of football among the youth in Mumbai is set to receive a huge boost thanks to an initiative of Lok Sabha MP Milind Deora, who has conceptualized the annual South Mumbai Junior Soccer Challenge with a view to unearthing talent at the grassroots level.
- The event is being sponsored by Coca Cola and is being partnered by English Championship club Queens Park Rangers, partly owned by NRI business tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and the event is being conducted by Saran Sports.

- The salient features of the event are as follows:
- 1) The event shall be of a 5-A-Side format for South Mumbai schools.
- 2) It shall be for boys and girls between the ages of 8-11 years and 11-14 years.
The uniqueness of this event is the fact that the participating schools would include municipal schools, government aided schools and private schools.

QPR 2 COVENTRY 2

QPR Official Site
Rangers and Coventry City both took a share of the spoils in an enthralling encounter at Loftus Road.
The Sky Blues had taken an early lead - albeit against the run of play - when Leon Best nodded home Patrick Van Aanholt's free-kick.
Though Rangers didn't falter, and they found an equalising goal of the game when Alejandro Faurlin's exquisite lobbed pass was tucked away by Jay Simpson.
Despite some resistance from the Sky Blues after the interval, the R's weren't to be deterred, as Buzsaky thumped home when free inside the area.

Richard Wood nodded the visitors level 10 minutes from time.
With the draw, Rangers now sit in fifth spot in the Coca-Cola Championship.
R's boss Jim Magilton made three changes to the side that suffered a 2-0 defeat at Doncaster last weekend.
After coming through 65 minutes for the Reserves in midweek, Fitz Hall came into the R's central defence in place of Kaspars Gorkss.
Elsewhere, Adel Taarabt started at the expense of Steven Reid, while Tommy Williams made way for Gary Borrowdale.
So, with Radek Cerny in goal, Mikele Leigertwood, Matt Connolly, Hall and Borrowdale started in defence.
Buzsaky and Taarabt started out wide in midfield, supported by Ben Watson and Faurlin from the middle of the park.
Wayne Routledge partnered Simpson in attack.
In front of a watching Flavio Briatore and his Formula One racing driver guest Sebastian Vettel, both sides were on the offensive from the first whistle.
Rangers were first on the attack when Watson played a beautiful, sweeping pass out to Taarabt on the left.
However, though the Tottenham loanee had time and space to shoot when free just inside the area, he could only drag his shot wide of Kieran Westwood's left-hand post.
Play then switched to the other end, where the Sky Blues were unlucky not to find the first goal of the game with a lovely, flowing move.
After a clever pass was played up to Clinton Morrison on the edge of the area, he held off his marker before laying the ball into the path of Van Aanholt.
Though, with the ball seemingly heading for the bottom corner net, Cerny got down low to brilliantly tip the Chelsea loanee's shot away to safety.
This was a fast-paced encounter, typified when play soon reverted to the other end and Taarabt played a delicious pass to Routledge on the right.
With three men to beat, Routledge almost obliged, breezing past a couple before unleashing a shot for goal, though Stephen Wright put in a goal-saving block to prevent the ball from finding the net.
The R's were now in control of this entertaining affair, and when Buzsaky's corner from the left was deflected out to the edge of the area, Watson fired just over.
However, when the visitors won a free-kick from deep, Coventry stormed into the lead with a goal against the run of play.
Van Aanholt it was with the assist, as his teasing ball into the penalty box was met by an unmarked Best - and the Sky Blues were in front.
Rangers weren't too despondent after the setback.
After great link-up play between Routledge and Taarabt, the former squared to Watson on the edge of the area, though he blasted just wide.
Coventry then almost took a two-goal lead when David Bell crossed superbly for Best, though the former Southampton frontman could only head wide of the goal.
Rangers were far the superior force in this encounter by now though, and they got their just rewards for a stunning passing move soon after with an equalising goal.
Passes were exchanged between Watson and Faurlin before the Argentinean playmaker played a gorgeous ball over the top for Simpson.
Unmarked, Simpson stayed cool to drill the ball into the bottom corner into the net - putting the R's firmly back into the match.
Just short of the break, the home side missed two glorious opportunities to take a first-half lead.
First, Routledge drove into the area before firing straight at Westwood, before a brilliant cross from Borrowdale out wide on the left to Simpson was headed just over the target.
As the second half got underway, the R's maintained the attacking momentum that they finished the first period with.
Taarabt drove at the visitors' defence before unleashing a low shot on target, but Westwood got down well to claim the effort.
Moments later, confusion among the host's ranks saw the ball fall to Jack Cork just inside the area, though Borrowdale got across well to turn the ball away for a corner.
Rangers continued to press their opponents, not least when Leigertwood found the ball out on the right before cutting in and dragging a shot just wide.
Soon after, Taarabt almost scored what would have been a goal of the season contender.
After a corner was deflected into his path, the Spurs midfielder did what no-one expected when he dinked a speculative lob over the keeper - but his shot cannoned off the bar to safety.
This was becoming somewhat of the Taarabt show, and soon after he beat one man before dragging a shot inches wide.
Rangers were more than knocking on the door for a second - and only a timely intervention from Van Aanholt prevented Routledge from being through on goal after another great pass over the top from Faurlin.
The R's weren't to be denied for two much longer, and soon after they took a deserved lead.
Routledge's driven effort from the edge of the area after a corner from Taarabt cannoned into the path of Buzsaky.
The Magical Magyar made no mistake, drilling the R's into the lead.
The joy was only short lived, however, with Coventry netting their second goal of the game - again against the run of play
After a looping free-kick was played into the area, Wood - in only his second game for the Sky Blues - rose highest to nod the visitors level.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for Rangers, especially as they had been the better team for large spells of the fixture.
Though, with 10 minutes still left on the clock, they continued to attack - not least when Wright was shown his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
First, Simpson thumped straight at Westwood, before Buzsaky fired Watson's pass straight over.
But try as they did the R's couldn't find that illusive fifth goal of the game, as Coventry saw out the encounter with a solid defensive display late on.

A Richard Wood header earned the Sky Blues a point in an action-packed match against Queens Park Rangers.
Leon Best gave City the lead before goals from Jay Simpson and Akos Buzsaky made it 2-1.
But Wood's finish from a Michael McIndoe free-kick ensured City took a hard-fought point.
Chris Coleman kept faith with the team that drew with Crystal Palace, but were put under early pressure. Ben Watson sent an excellent ball through to Adel Taarabt on the left, but his shot was well off-target.

The home side's early movement was troubling the Sky Blues and they could have been in trouble again in the seventh minute when neat passing played in Buzsaky, but his cross went high over the bar.
City started to come into the game and nearly took the lead in the 12th minute after some excellent play by Patrick van Aanholt and Clinton Morrison. The Dutchman collected the ball in the middle and dribbled forward before playing a neat one-two with Morrison, and smashing a shot towards the bottom corner - only for Radek Cerny to save.
At the other end, Wayne Routledge broke and beat three City players to get into the box, before a superb last-ditch challenge from Stephen Wright blocked a shot.
City then created a chance from nowhere to take the lead in the 16th minute. QPR conceded a free-kick in Coventry half, which van Aanholt stepped up to take. He sent a precise ball towards Best who outjumped his marker and flicked a header into the top corner.
Both sides continued to push forward and the Hoops quick passing created a chance for Watson on the edge of the box, but he blasted wide.
Simpson then thought he had leveled for the home side in the 26th minute, when he ran onto a through ball and slotted home, only to be flagged for offside.
QPR continued to push and then scored legitimately. Alejandro Faurlin flicked a lofted through ball towards Simpson, and he got in between Leon Barnett and Keiren Westwood to flick the ball into the net on the volley.
Rangers dominated the rest of the half, with Simpson going close again, but Westwood kept him at bay.
However, Aron Gunnarsson was unlucky not to score when he headed a Michael McIndoe free-kick past Cerny only for Faurlin to clear off the line.
QPR started the second half brightly as they pushed for a second goal.
Taarabt came close in the 56th minute after a quick corner. He received the ball 20-yards out, beat a sliding Gunnarsson challenge, before sending a delicate chip towards the back post - only for it to bounce off the bar to safety.
Faurlin also had a shot from range just miss, when his 64th minute drive from 18-yards whistled over the bar. Three minutes later it was Watson's turn, with a similar chance that almost found the target.
The pressure finally proved too much for City in the 69th minute. A frantic attack eventually fell loose to Buzsaky who fired the ball towards goal, only for it to take a deflection off Wood to leave Westwood helpless.
Coleman tried to change the game by introducing Jordan Clarke and Freddy Eastwood for van Aanholt and Bell.
QPR defended well but then City made it 2-2 through recent addition Wood. City won a free-kick on the right hand side of the penalty area, and McIndoe's ball was met by the defender who powered the ball home with his head.
However, the pressure was soon on again when Stephen Wright was sent off for a second yellow. Wright has brought down a player in the 77th minute and then caught Buzsaky for a second bookable offence.
QPR tried to make the extra man count but City worked their socks off to see out five minutes of injury time and earn the point. Coventry

Radek Cerny gaffes after Richie Wood heads late leveller
By LEO SPALL /MAIL

Radek Cerny was on the end of a Jim Magilton verbal volley after his mistakes left Rangers with only one win from their last five matches.
The goalkeeper stayed rooted to the spot as Richard Wood headed in a late equaliser. He had also been partially at fault when Leon Best opened the scoring for Coventry with a looping header in the 12th minute.
QPR manager Magilton lambasted Cerny before the end and, in front of co-owner Bernie Ecclestone at Loftus Road, his team's promotion prospects took another hit as poor defending and finishing let them down.
Despite fielding four defenders of six foot or more, Best was allowed to jump above them and head over the poorly-positioned Cerny to give Coventry a shock lead and increase his season's goal tally to nine.
The striker should have added to Coventry's lead in similar circumstances before the break too but headed just wide.
On the balance of play it would have been harsh but QPR let themselves down in the final third after some neat build-up play. Wayne Routledge has the skill and drive but not the finish of an out and out striker and Ben Watson's shooting from distance repeatedly threatened without reaping any reward.
Jay Simpson eventually equalised in the 35th minute when he latched on to Alejandro Faurlin's delicate chip and touched it past the slow-to-react Keiren Westwood.
But Rangers remained vulnerable to balls into their penalty area and Matthew Connolly had to head off the line from Aron Gunnarsson before the break.
Adel Taarabt flickered into life in the second half, hitting the crossbar and shooting narrowly wide as his team dominated.
Akos Buzsaky finally gave them the lead in the 69th minute from an angled shot which went over Coventry goalkeeper Westwood.
There looked like there would be plenty more to come but QPR couldn't add to their lead and paid the price.
Michael McIndoe's free-kick into the penalty area was nodded in with eight minutes to give Coventry – who have now gone eight games without a win – a valuable point.
Manager Chris Coleman would have been pleased with their resilience but it came at a price as defender Stephen Wright was sent off in the 85th minute for a second booking and could face further sanctions after appearing to throw his captain's armband at referee Mike Jones. Mail

Coventry Official Site - COLEMAN: Pleased with point

CHRIS Coleman described today's draw at QPR as 'a great point' after the Sky Blues battled back at Loftus Road.

City led through a Leon Best goal, but trailed 2-1 for much of the second half.

But Richard Wood's late equaliser secured a share of the spoils, against a team Coleman rates as among the best in the league.

He said: "For 20 minutes or so in the second half QPR put on the best performance I have seen from a side in this division. We could not get near them and at times were hanging on.

"They were excellent but we came back. They did have chances but their second goal was a deflection and when you are on a run like ours, that can happen.

"We felt a bit sorry for ourselves for five minutes or so and maybe went a bit route one when our confidence was knocked.

"I think this is a great point for us. All teams will come here and will struggle. They are a strong squad and we have been on a drastic run, but hopefully that will give us a platform."

Check back for Coleman's full post-match interview will be available on Sky Blues Player.

QPR OFFICIAL SITE - JIM: 'I WON'T TOLERATE THAT DEFENDING!'
Jim Magilton found the final scoreline difficult to accept this afternoon as he labelled his side's defending 'woeful' following QPR's 2-2 draw against Coventry City at Loftus Road.

"I think we created enough chances to win the game, albeit Coventry were still very much in it and looked very, very dangerous from set-pieces," said the R's boss.

"They caused us problems whenever the ball went near our box. But our general play was excellent, as was our composure.

"When we went a goal down we still looked to pass the ball. We then justifiably went 2-1 up, and on another day would have gone on to win the game quite comfortably."

With the R's heading towards three points following goals from Jay Simpson and Akos Buzsaky, Richard Wood struck for the visitors in only his second game with the Sky Blues following his loan arrival from Sheffield Wednesday.

His near-post header following a free-kick from the right ensured a share of the spoils for Chris Coleman's men, and Magilton conceded: "If you don't defend properly, if you don't do what is necessary to win football matches, then that's the result.

"Both goals were woeful. We've had two Saturdays now where the goals have been an absolute joke.

"It's very much a work-in-progress but I won't tolerate the goals that we're conceding.

"We're very much disappointed that we haven't won a home game today, but we've moved up a place - it's a crazy division.

"We're still striving for perfection, and we know it's not out there but there's no reason for coming in and not trying to get there."

NEWS OF THE WORLD -WRIGHT IN THE WRONG
STEPHEN WRIGHT is in trouble following his sending off.

Coventry captain Wright was shown a red card after getting his second yellow for a late challenge on Akos Buzsaky.

The former Liverpool defender then disgraced himself by throwing his armband at referee Mike Jones before heading down the tunnel in the 84th minute.

Jones is no stranger to controversy. He allowed a beach ball to score for Sunderland against Liverpool last month and he is unlikely to see the funny side after he was hit in the back by Wright's flying captain's armband.

City boss Chris Coleman said: "Wright is fuming but it's not like him to do that. I didn't see it because I was reorganising my team but Wright is disappointed."

Wright's rush of blood overshadowed a battling Coventry performance against a QPR team described by Coleman as the best in the division. He said: "We could not live with them for the first 20 minutes of the second half."

Leon Best put Coventry ahead with a clever header before QPR turned the game on its head.

Jay Simpson levelled with a close-range flick before Buzsaky nudged Rangers ahead with a deflected left-foot strike in the 69th minute.

Rangers looked home and dry until Richard Wood headed in.

Rangers manager Jim Magilton said: "I'm angry because we couldn't defend set-pieces. The keeper should have done better News of The World

Mirror - - City leave it late to nick a point

Richard Wood's first goal for 10-man Coventry secured a late 2-2 draw against high-flying QPR at Loftus Road.

Wood, who was making only his second appearance since signing on loan from Sheffield Wednesday, headed home an 81st-minute equaliser to ensure an entertaining Coca-Cola Championship clash finished all square.

Leon Best headed his ninth goal of the season to put Coventry ahead before Jay Simpson pulled the hosts level shortly after the half-hour mark with a neat finish.

Adel Taarabt was a constant menace all afternoon for the Hoops and Akos Buzsaky deservedly fired them ahead in the 69th minute before Wood's late leveller.

A lively clash threw up more incident six minutes from time when Sky Blues captain Stephen Wright was dismissed for a second bookable offence, after which he appeared to throw his captain's armband at referee Mike Jones.

The result meant Coventry have now gone eight games without victory, although they will be much happier with a point than a QPR side who hardly banished the memory of last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Doncaster.

Both sides enjoyed a positive start to the encounter, with Taarabt firing a shot come cross along the face of goal after just three minutes.

Hoops keeper Radek Cerny was called upon to keep out Patrick Van Aanholt's goalbound effort with a superb diving save soon after, before the hosts broke and threatened again themselves through Wayne Routledge.

It was no real surprise when the opening goal came with just 16 minutes on the clock and it was the visitors who grabbed the initiative.

Best earlier this week insisted Coventry would be a different team if they could start games in the same way they finish them, having gone behind on four occasions during their winless streak.

And it was he who put them ahead by sending a looping header over the stranded Cerny from Van Aanholt's free-kick.

Rangers immediately hit back and the lively Taarabt was giving Wright all sorts of problems down the left wing, while also forcing a solid save from Keiren Westwood.

The complexion of the first half changed completely within the space of 60 seconds when Best headed a great chance wide when all he had to do was hit the target.

And from almost being 2-0 down, QPR were level when Simpson latched onto Alejandro Faurlin's through-ball to fire past Westwood.

Aron Gunnarsson then saw his stoppage-time header cleared off the line by Matthew Connolly as a thrilling first half ended level.

The ambition of both teams remained evident after the break as they created openings in search of a second goal.

First Taarabt was unlucky to see his deft chip hit the crossbar after a superb bit of skill, before Van Aanholt put in a great recovering tackle to deny Routledge as he looked to pull the trigger.

The hosts were soon starting the dominate things once again with Faurlin and Ben Watson going close and they got the breakthrough they deserved in the 69th minute.

With the Sky Blues becoming camped in their own half, a Hoops corner remained in the danger zone and Buzsaky's drilled shot from close range took a deflection before beating Westwood.

Gunnarsson saw his effort deflected over the bar as Coventry, aided by some attacking substitutions, pressed in search of an equaliser. Mirror

Yann Tear/Gazette - Magilton furious with set piece let-downs

JIM MAGILTON was in a dark mood as Rangers were held at home for the fifth time this season after shipping a late equaliser against Coventry City at Loftus Road.

The Rs, who again looked good going forward, undid their good work with sloppy defending – both Coventry goals coming from free-kicks.

And unusually, the Rangers boss was not shy of singling out individuals for their mistakes.

“I’m extremely disappointed. We didn’t defend at set-pieces and I’m angry about that, “ Magilton moaned.

“Matt Connolly has to take his share of the blame for the first goal. If you’re marking someone then you need to take responsibility. For the second goal, the keeper [Radek Cerny] should have done better.

“I’m angry because performance-wise, we were very good with the ball. We were confident, extremely bright and passed it well.

“But you also have to take responsibility and defend for your lives. That didn’t happen. We fell asleep at set-pieces.”

The Sky Blues, without a win since September, went ahead through Leon Best before QPR looked to be heading for victory after goals from Jay Simpson and Akos Buzsaky.

But City hit back with an 81st minute strike from Richard Wood, before ending the match with 10 men after skipper Stephen Wright was sent off for a second bookable offence following a late foul on Buzsaky.

Chris Coleman’s side went ahead in the 16th minute, when Best beat Rs defender Matt Connolly to Patrick van Aanholt’s free-kick and sent a looping header beyond keeper Radek Cerny.

Van Aanholt had almost scored four minutes earlier. The on-loan Chelsea left-back played a neat one-two with Clinton Morrison before seeing his low shot excellently tipped away by Cerny.

Ben Watson had a chance to equalise for Rangers after a similar exchange of passes with Wayne Routledge, but the midfielder fired wide.

Rangers thought they had levelled when Buzsaky threaded the ball through for Simpson, who slotted into the net but was adjudged to be offside.

But Simpson beat the offside trap 10 minutes before half-time, latching onto Alejandro Faurlin’s chipped pass and poking the ball past keeper Kieran Westwood.

Rangers stepped up a gear in the second half and Adel Taarabt twice came close to putting them in front.

The Moroccan hit the bar with a delightful chip from just outside the penalty area and then shot inches wide after riding two challenges.

The breakthrough for Rangers came when the visitors struggled to clear Faurlin’s corner and the ball eventually dropped to Buzsaky, whose left-footed drive deflected in off Wood.

But Wood, recently signed from Sheffield Wednesday, had the last laugh by heading home Michael McIndoe’s right-wing free-kick.

Coventry had to hang on after the dismissal of Wright, who threw his captain’s armband towards referee Mike Jones after being given his marching orders.

Line-up: Cerny; Leigertwood, Connolly, Hall, Borrowdale; Buzsaky, Watson, Faurlin, Taarabt (Reid 80); Routledge, Simpson. Subs not used: McWeeney, Ramage, Gorkss, Williams, Agyemang, Pellicori. Attendance: 13,712 Ealing Gazette

Gorman eyes "big month" for QPR
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/q/qpr/8381628.stm?

Former England assistant Gorman is happy to be back in football
Assistant manager John Gorman thinks Queens Park Rangers' season could be shaped by a month of tough fixtures leading into the Christmas period.
Following Saturday's match at home to Coventry, the Super Hoops play six times in December.
They are currently sixth in the Championship table, and Gorman told BBC London 94.9: "This is a big month moving into the festive period.
"Games are coming up fast and furious and we've got a local derby coming up."
He continued: "That game (away to Watford on 7 December) after the Middlesbrough home match is nice because it's three games in London coming up."
However, Gorman thinks the addition of loan signings Steven Reid from Blackburn and Tom Williams from Peterborough will give the Rangers squad the strength in depth needed to compete for automatic promotion.
That has been needed, after losing two key players in Martin Rowlands and Gavin Mahon through injury.
"The boss and myself talked about bringing in new faces," he said. "We've had a chance of bringing in one or two loan players, but we've a little worrying doubt with Steven Reid for the weekend after he picked up a bit of a knock.
"We've been very unlucky with injuries, we've lost some very influential players but we've never made it an excuse. We've just continued every week, we've accepted it.
"Losing players like Martin Rowlands and Gavin Mahon was a big blow to us but we've managed to keep playing well even without those players.
"We're happy with the players we've got and we want to go into these next two games (at home to Coventry on Saturday, and Middlesbrough on 5 December) and get back to winning ways."

On-loan midfielder Steven Reid has admitted he is loving life at new club Queens Park Rangers.

The 28-year-old is looking to get some first-team football under his belt after being sent on a month's loan to Loftus Road by parent club Blackburn Rovers.
Reid missed almost all of last season with a serious knee injury and was allowed to leave Ewood Park for a short period so he can build up his fitness.

Although Rangers lost 2-0 to Doncaster on Reid's debut for the club, he expressed his delight at his return to league football.

He told skysports.com: "The result was really disappointing, but I can't explain how great it is to be back playing league football on a Saturday instead of shopping with the missus or watching Soccer Saturday on TV.

"I've played a couple of games in the Carling Cup for Blackburn, but it's not the same as being out there in the league at the weekend.

"It did feel a bit weird at first, simply because I've been at Blackburn so long.

"I know everyone there, all the players, the staff, the people in the office, and so you become a bit like a part of the furniture.

"The lads here have been brilliant though, and I had the usual initiation on the way up to Doncaster. We were stuck in a bit of traffic and a few of them thought it would be a good time to switch the microphone on and get me up to sing a song."

QPR's next game is a clash with Coventry City in the Championship on Saturday as they look to establish themselves in the play-off positions.

Raheem Sterling to Arsenal? The Sun/Paul Jiggins -
- ARSENAL are set to snatch QPR wonderkid Raheem Sterling from under the noses of Manchester rivals City and United.
The North West rivals, along with Liverpool, have been tracking Rangers' 14-year-old striking sensation for months.
- Manchester City have already spoken with the Hoops about their hot prospect.
- But Sterling is close to joining the Gunners after speaking with Academy director Liam Brady.
- Rangers can expect around £750,000 in compensation plus add-ons. The Sun

- Flavio Briatore had his hearing in Paris

Mail - Magilton Backs Briatore
QPR back chairman Flavio Briatore as former Renault boss faces D-Day in bid to overturn lifetime ban for Crashgate
-Jim Magilton has shrugged off concerns over Queens Park Rangers' future, even if Flavio Briatore loses his legal bid to overturn a life ban from Formula One.
The QPR boss has insisted he will concentrate solely on working with his players and going about 'business as usual' while Briatore carries out his court case against the FIA, which began today in France.
If the former Renault boss loses his challenge against the punishment he received for ordering Nelson Piquet Jnr to crash in the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, he could be forced to leave Loftus Road under the Football League's 'fit and proper persons' test'.
-Banned: QPR chairman Flavio Briatore is battling the FIA over his punishment after the 'Crashgate' saga involving ex-Renault star Nelson Piquet Jnr (above) but Jim Magilton (below, with Gavin Mahon) insists it's 'business as usual' at Loftus Road
-The test states that if a person is 'banned from the administration of a sport by a sport's governing body' then they cannot act as director of a Football League club, causing serious concern among QPR fans that Briatore could quit and the club's mega-rich co-owners Bernie Ecclestone and Lakshmi Mittal might follow him.
But despite the uncertainty Magilton has steered Rangers into play-off contention and remains unfazed by the speculation surrounding the club off the pitch.
He said: 'Mr Briatore pays me to do my job which is to look after results on the pitch. What is happening with him at the moment is completely separate and I have been assured it is business as usual whatever happens.
'My own philosophy is about working with the players. I don't think we have seen the best of them yet so we are still very much a work in progress. I am very happy to do my job here and they let me get on with it.
'If I think we need strengthening in January, I will go to the board and Mr Briatore, who would generally help with these things.'
But whether Briatore is still around West London in January is down to the High Court in Paris. The Italian multi-millionaire is seeking almost £1million in compensation after making several allegations against the FIA .
-These include: the failure of the FIA to state the charges against him in advance; the lack of access to prosecution documents and to the key witness (Piquet); a lack of impartiality; secret negotiation of the final decision before the hearing; and the granting of selective immunities in order to build the prosecution case (in return for his testimony, Piquet was not punished).
Briatore himself said he was hopeful of success in his action: 'This decision is a legal absurdity and I have every confidence that the French courts will resolve the matter justly and impartially.' Mail

Football League - LEAGUE LAUNCHES NEW SUPPORTERS SURVEY

The Football League is giving fans throughout the country the opportunity to help influence the future of professional football with the launch of its third online supporter consultation.

The Football League Supporters Survey 2010 lets fans have their say on a range of important football issues from the introduction of goal-line technology, sin-bins and salary caps to refereeing standards, football on television and diving.

Fans are also invited to give their views about the club they support with a range of topics up for discussion including ticketing, stewarding, communication with supporters and whether they feel valued by their club.

To take part in The Football League Supporters Survey 2010 click here.

The 2010 Survey follows on from previous supporter consultations in 2006 and 2008, both of which saw more than 40,000 fans contribute their views.

In launching The Football League Supporters Survey 2010 League Chairman, Lord Mawhinney, encouraged supporters to take part: "This is the opportunity for fans to tell us their views on the football they watch.

"The opinions expressed by supporters in our two previous surveys contributed to our thinking as we developed our Regulations on Agents, our new Home Grown Players rule and our smoke-free policy at matches.

"They have also given clubs a better understanding of what their fans like and dislike about watching football, which has helped The League identify best practice at club level and improve the supporter experience.

"I hope fans to take this opportunity to make a difference, once again."

Around 400,000 e-mails will be sent to registered supporters, asking them to contribute their views.Additionally, all other supporters will be able to participate online, via The Football League website - www.football-league.co.uk.

By completing the survey, which is being run in conjunction with sports research specialists SportsWise, supporters will have the opportunity to win a 'money can't buy' prize to see their team train and meet the players. There are also 100 Mitre Official Football League balls on offer to lucky winners.

The results of The Football League Supporters' Survey 2010 will be published in the New Year.

Example questions from The Football League Supporters Survey 2010:

- Would you like to see The Football League trial the use of sin-bins in one of its competitions?

- Do you think The Football League should introduce a system that puts a limit on the amount clubs can spend on players' salaries or restricts the number of players they can sign?

- Do you think the standard of refereeing in Football League matches is improving?

- Why did you start supporting your club?

- What might encourage you to attend more of your club's home/away matches?

- Do you feel valued by your club?

- When would you prefer to watch live Football league matches on television?

- Would you be willing to pay to join a subscription service that would enable you to watch your club's away matches on the internet? Football League

Watford Observer/Frank Smith - Watford in discussions with QPR over extending Heidar Helguson's stay at Vicarage Road
-Malky Mackay has confirmed Watford are in discussions with QPR over extending the loan spell of Heidar Helguson.
- The Hornets tied up a deal for Tom Cleverley last week and Mackay confirmed on Saturday that the club’s recruitment department are in “ongoing discussions” with Manchester United, Arsenal and QPR over prolonging the stay of Craig Cathcart, Henri Lansbury and Helguson.
- The striker’s five goals in four appearances has increased his legendary status at the club where he scored 64 goals during his initial five-and-a-half years spell.
- But despite there being no loan fee involved when he rejoined the club in September and QPR paying half of the 32-year-old’s wages, there are still doubts as to whether the club can afford to pay his wages for the rest of the season, following the release of Watford Leisure Plc’s annual results two weeks ago - where it was stated a £6.5m hole needed to be filled before June 2010.
- However, when asked about the club’s attempts to extend Helguson’s loan following the 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe United, Mackay said: “In all our loans, discussions are ongoing with their clubs at the moment and I have nothing else to say at the moment.
- “It is something we would have to talk to his club about. Heidar has come back in and he has hit the ground running in terms of the way he adapts to our team and adapts to a different environment, but he is an international footballer so I wouldn't expect anything less from him. That is why we wanted to get him in the first place.”
A first-half double from Helguson and Danny Graham’s first goal in eight matches meant Watford cruised to a 3-0 win over Scunthorpe to climb up to eighth place.....” Watford Observer

SPORTING LIFE - O'DRISCOLL THRILLED BY ROVERS

Sean O'Driscoll was satisfied his side "ticked all the boxes" after watching Doncaster spring a 2-0 upset on high-flying QPR at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Two goals in 12 second-half minutes settled matters, Billy Sharp stabbing an opener from close range eight minutes after the break before Dean Shiels netted a sweetly-struck low shot from the edge of the box.

QPR charged forward in an effort to get back in the game but Rovers, often accused of having more style than substance, cantered through the final stages to claim only their second win in 12 games.

"I thought we were excellent," said O'Driscoll.

"We've had great performances and not had the right results and sometimes we have played, in our eyes, poorly and got points.

"But we ticked all the boxes today; we got the right performance and the right result."

The first half was close, both teams playing excellent football without looking particularly dangerous in the area.

Rangers' seven-goal striker Jay Simpson arguably could have done better with a fifth-minute volley and Mikele Leigertwood dragged a shot wide 20 minutes later.

In between, Rovers' John Oster had a 25-yard free-kick flicked wide by Radek Cerny and Shiels hit the Czech keeper from close range, but the best play came after the break.

Simpson had the first chance, pulling wide from distance, but Doncaster made their breakthrough when Sharp was given too much space in the six-yard box and prodded the ball over the line.

Shiels added a second after more lax defending, opening the door for Doncaster to play what O'Driscoll described as "beautiful football".

"You could see the confidence after the first goal," he said. "It's nice to see. The chests came out, everyone wanted the ball. When they get like that we are difficult to beat."

O'Driscoll was relieved to see his side claim a win after squandering winning positions in six previous games - but insisted his emphasis will remain on stylish play.

"We have been ahead in a lot of big games and not quite been able to get a result but we have learnt from the experience, got better and looked good," he said.

"We had a sequence of about 35 passes at one point and I think we deserved the result.

"The result is important but if you put the emphasis on winning, the outcome is more important than the processes and we work on processes. If you play right then the results will come."

QPR boss Jim Magilton was disappointed by his side's defending and admitted the final half-hour was the worst since he arrived in June.

"Very disappointed for both goals," he said. "We were architects of our own downfall in some ways.

"I thought it was an even game, but at times we looked lethargic, as if we had had two weeks off.

"We looked like we had lads who had been reading nice things about themselves. We had opportunities and moments, but Doncaster are a good side and we didn't take our chances.

"It's difficult because we set high standards and we fell. At half-time I felt we should go for the game but Jay's miss summed up our afternoon.

"For the last half-hour it was as poor as they have played for me. I can't be too hard on them because they have been very good until now." Sporting Life

QPR Official Site - MAGILTON: 'IT'S A REALITY CHECK'

Jim Magilton pinpointed his side's second half display as the main reason behind their 2-0 reverse at Doncaster Rovers.

After an even first period, Billy Sharp and Dean Shiels put the hosts into the ascendancy in the space of 10 second half minutes.

In what were difficult weather conditions at The Keepmoat Stadium, the R's boss was understandably disappointed with the nature of his team's defeat, and told www.qpr.co.uk: "I thought it was a fairly even contest in the first half, in what were pretty difficult conditions.

"Both sides tried to play, we had opportunities.

"We fell asleep for their first goal, I was very disappointed with both goals - they were really, really poor.

"We were probably the architects of our own downfall today, we didn't defend properly.

"It's difficult because we've set our standards so high. At half time I thought if we went for it we'd have a chance to win the game."

Indeed, the R's looked as though they had taken heed of Magilton's comments after the break.

But when Jay Simpson missed a golden opportunity to put Rangers into the lead just after half time, they were made to pay shortly after.

"We had a great opportunity at the start of the second half, but didn't take it," Magilton said.

"Jay's miss probably summed up our afternoon, we weren't really at it.

"We looked lethargic and like we'd had two weeks off. It's a reality check for us all."

However, Magilton feels that the R's will have learnt a big lesson from the defeat, and has cited that his side will be more than ready for their next fixture, as Rangers entertain Coventry City at Loftus Road next Saturday.

"These lads are playing for me, so I can't be too hard on them. It's a lesson learnt," added Magilton.

"We've got a big week ahead of us, and we'll be ready QPR

Doncaster Official Site - O'DRISCOLL: WE TICKED ALL BOXES

Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll felt that his side fully deserved their 2-0 victory over fourth-placed Queens Park Rangers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Rovers completely outplayed their opponents in the second half of the encounter, including an amazing 35-pass passage of play which left the highly-rated R's chasing shadows.

A smart finish from Billy Sharp and a beautiful curling left-footed effort from Dean Shiels gave Rovers the win, with a solid back four leaving the visitors frustrated by a lack of clear-cut chances.

"That was as good as Blackpool and as good as at Plymouth when we went down to ten men; we were terrific then as well. People judge you on results and that is sometimes unfortunate, because that hides a lot of positives," the Rovers manager explained following the encounter.

"They are a good team, QPR. We watched them live and we watched a couple of DVDs and I thought that we deserved it (the win). I don't think that they have come off of the pitch thinking that they've got lucky. I think that as soon as the first goal went in, we sort of grew ten feet tall. That was nice to see."

"The back four played really well last week and it was a sort of an odd bounce that cost us a point at Plymouth. Our discipline was good and our organisation was really good, against a team that I have seen open teams up and score some great goals. That gives us a base and it gives us a base to do what we want to do going forward. Overall, we have ticked all of the boxes today, which is good." Doncaster

QPR Official Site

Two goals in quick succession were enough for Doncaster Rovers, as they registered a maximum return against the R's.

On a wet and windy afternoon at The Keepmoat Stadium, second half strikes from Billy Sharp and Dean Shiels saw off the visitors, in an encounter that was a good advert for passing football in the Coca-Cola Championship.

Sharp fired the hosts in front with a smart finish from close range, before Sheils' curling effort from the edge of the area sealed the points.

MPU Despite the loss, the R's still remain in the play-off places, lying in sixth spot.

Rangers gaffer Jim Magilton made no less than four changes from the side that won away at Sheffield Wednesday a fortnight ago, reverting to a 4-3-3 formation in the process.

New loan signings Steven Reid and Tommy Williams were both handed starts at The Keepmoat Stadium, replacing Gavin Mahon (knee) and Peter Ramage respectively.

Meanwhile, after impressing from the bench in that 2-1 victory at Hillsborough, Alejandro Faurlin came in for Adel Taarabt, whilst Matt Connolly replaced Fitz Hall (back).

Radek Cerny started in goal for the R's, behind a back four of Mikele Leigertwood, Kaspars Gorkss, Connolly and Williams.

Ben Watson, Faurlin and Reid made up Rangers' midfield engine room.

Jay Simpson headed a three-man attack, supported by Wayne Routledge and Akos Buzsaky.

As the rain lashed down on a lush South Yorkshire playing surface, the R's were out of the traps immediately.

After some neat, intricate passing play between Faurlin and Simpson, the ball found its way to Routledge on the right, but Buzsaky could only fire his cross over from 12-yards out when free in the area.

Play soon switched to the other end, and Cerny was forced into a fingertip save to prevent John Oster from opening the scoring with a free-kick 25-yards out.

From the resulting corner, Oster was again involved to feed Sheils at a tight angle down the left, but Williams did well to block his shot, as the ball trickled safely into the path of Cerny.

The hosts, in truth, were playing some lovely, free-flowing football themselves early on, though it was Rangers who were next on the attack.

Simpson swept a pass to Routledge out wide before the latter squared for Leigertwood on the edge of the area, but the R's right back could only blast wide of the target.

The game was a fairly even contest, with Rangers were having their fair share of chances.

Just short of the break, Watson played a sublime though ball to Routledge on halfway, though the midfielder could only shoot wide of Neil Sullivan's left-hand post.

As the teams re-emerged for the second period, Magilton opted for a substitution.

Taarabt replaced Faurlin - and it was a change that was almost instantly rewarded.

Buzsaky passed to Taarabt, who in turn played a cutting pass through to Simpson on the edge of the area.

The Arsenal loanee decided to take a first time shot when perhaps taking a touch first would have been best, firing the ball inches wide of Sullivan's right-hand post.

And it was a chance that Rangers would live to regret, as seconds later, the hosts took the lead.

The R's failed to deal with a quickly taken corner, and when the ball was centred to an unmarked Sharp, the striker made no mistake to drill the ball home just six yards from goal.

The opening goal seemed to buoy Donny and shortly after, they added a second.

After Gorkss played a side pass to Williams, the Rangers full-back was unable to control the ball as it fell to Shiels.

Despite several last-ditch attempts from the R's rearguard to block the effort, Sheils remained calm to curl the ball past Cerny and into the back of the net.

Rangers may have been despondent about conceding a quick-fire double, though they still continued to attack.

Taarabt was again involved, running at the Doncaster defence before unleashing a low driven effort, but Sullivan did well to get down low and claim the ball.

The hosts nearly a third when Dean Shiels unleashed a stinging effort in at goal, but Cerny was alert to tip the ball away to safety.

A cold, wet and windy afternoon greeted the arrival of the Queens Park Rangers team at the Keepmoat Stadium this afternoon. The Rovers made one change from the last game at Plymouth a fortnight ago, Quinton Fortune replacing the suspended Martin Woods. Fortune also wears the captain's armband. The visitors include their latest signings, on loan, Tom Williams and Stephen Reid. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half.

The visitors set the game in motion but it was five minutes any meaningful action took place. This came when Routledge got to the right byline and crossed to the far post. It was partially cleared to Simpson, who placed his shot for the far top corner well wide. The Rovers then got their game going and in the 13th minute they were awarded a free kick in a central position 25yards from goal. Oster threaded a hard, low shot through the wall to the left of the keeper, who got down well to beat it out for a corner. This produced another corner from which Shiels cut in from the left and blasted at the near post where a combination of the post and keeper kept the ball out for the keeper to eventually claim it. The game settled into an even game with both sides showing their football skills. Leigertwood fired wide from the right after 24minutes and Shiels had a run and shot from 25yards that Cerny saved two minutes later. The midfield battle continued, with the only action in front of goal coming from Routledge, who fired wide from the right angle of the penalty area and Oster, for the Rovers, hitting a terrific drive from 25yards that Cerny beat out double-fisted.

The Rovers started the second half and made their intentions clear by going straight on to the attack but it was the visitors who got the first strike on goal when Simpson fired wide from 25 yards. Play went straight to the other end where Sharp was crowded out in the penalty area as he tried his utmost to make room for a shot at goal. Minutes later Shiels had a shot from 25yards saved. On 53minutes, Sharp received on the edge of the visitors penalty area, swivelled on the ball to hit a powerful drive goalwards but a deflection took it out for a corner. This was swung into the six yard box where the alert SHARP stabbed it into the net. The Rovers were right on their game now and dominating. The 65th minute came up as SHIELS capitalised on a defensive error to rifle in from 20yards. The visitors tried to hit back through Taarabt but Sullivan, diving left, saved his 25yard effort. The Rovers regained their dominance and after 77 minutes Sharp was played through but was brought down by Leigertwood, who was onl booked because there was another defender alongside him. A minute later, the Rovers won a corner which brought strong appeals from the Rovers for a penalty when the ball was played into the middle. No said the referee and the Rangers raced to the Rovers end where they gained a corner. This came to nothingand a couple of minutes later Shiels had a 25yard shot saved. Then Sharp cut in from the left shot for goal but it was blocked at the expense of a corner. This was cleared and the Rangers won a corner of their own followed minutes later by another but the Rovers defended them extemely well considering their lack of inches as opposed to the visiting players. A minute from the end of normal time, Chambers came in from the right, had his shot blocked it fell to Sharp but he could only touch it to Coppinger eight yards out but his effort was blocked and cleared. As the four minutes of added time came up the visitors stormed to the attack but, despite successive corners the Rovers defence stood firm to gain an excellent win over a good team and take the badly-needed three points.
