Season in one word Auspicious! (or as the man said after he jumped off the roof of a building: "So far so good.")

How's it going? QPR ended last season discombobulated and demoralized; with a slew of over-paid and under-performing players not wanted and wanting. There were serious doubt whether Manager Harry Redknapp would start the new season still in charge at QPR. Emulating Wolves' successive relegations, seemed a perfectly realistic scenario. But of course Redknapp stayed; QPR are currently top; and while we're not scoring many goals (and most of those are coming from Charlie Austin), our defense has been amazing - establishing a QPR record by not conceding a goal for eight consecutive games. As is often the case at this club, news about QPR has not been restricted to on-the-field. The latest has been the massive, just-announced plans for a new QPR stadium a couple of miles away, and the demolition of Loftus Road (Sob!)

Who's been the star? There have been several stars rather than just one: Robert Green, Charlie Austin, Richard Dunne, Clint Hill, and even – much as I despise him – Joey Barton. A special place has to be given for manager Harry Redknapp. And of course, Chairman Tony – "TONY" – Fernandes as always.

Biggest disappointment? There really hasn't been a "biggest disappointment" (other than QPR's failure to win every match by several goals.) On the margins, Adel Taarabt's failure to develop into the QPR player he could have become and Shaun Derry's departure, were mild disappointments. Coach Steve "We hardly knew you" McClaren's departure was perhaps more serious. McClaren did great things in his short time at the club. More long-term, the perennial (decade-long) failure of "home growns" to win places in the QPR first team, continues to disappoint.

All we want for Christmas is ... Besides Chelsea FC being cast into the nethermost abysses of the Non Leagues and Stamford Bridge getting ploughed under? I appreciate this goes beyond even a Christmas miracle, but I pine for a return to the days of QPR as a small, well-run club, punching-above-our-weight, playing attractive, attacking football and universally-admired as everyone's Second Team.

QPR chief executive Phil Beard insists that the club’s survival in a new 40,000-capacity stadium will not be dependent on participation in the Premier League.

Rangers last week revealed plans for a new ground as part of the regeneration project at Old Oak Common. The stadium could be built in time for the 2018-19 season, and would stand as part of the creation of a commercial and residential project larger than Canary Wharf.

The plans have raised questions over QPR’s ability to regularly fill a stadium of such size if they are not in the Premier League – Loftus Road holds just 18,360 – but Beard believes that the plans are financially sound regardless of the division in which Rangers are playing.

“You have to build a business model around every scenario, which is why this has to be more than just a football stadium,” said Beard. “Our ability to generate income from activities outside football will be important.

“We would look to attract a broader fan-base. There will be 8,000 new homes in the area so you would like to think you would be able to get new fans from the local area.

“We are not wedded to 40,000. There are opportunities to build a modular stadium, so you might start with a slightly smaller stadium and expand as the club develops.

“There is no point in building a new stadium without understanding what we have to achieve on the pitch as well. Premier League stability is the aim.

“We sold almost exactly the same number of season tickets this season as we did when we were in the Premier League. We can’t decide not to do anything. Staying here at Loftus Road is a difficult option if you want to build anything going forward.”

Beard conceded that QPR can afford no repeat of the scatter-gun spending in the transfer window that led directly to their catastrophic two-year spell in the Premier League.

The CEO believes that next summer could again prove a busy time of rebuilding, particularly if Rangers are promoted – but he insists that, this time around, the club will take a more measured approach to their dealings.

“There is no question that, with every club that goes from the Championship into the Premier League, there have to be some changes to the squad,” he said.

“It’s fair to say that over the last couple of years we have done too much too quickly without giving it the right time and attention to understand what the changes might result in.

“Harry [Redknapp] is very well equipped in that he can identify the type of player, the type of character he wants.

“I don’t foresee a huge amount of activity in January but what I can see is, if things go well and we get promoted, a lot of activity being planned after that.

“But we will be looking for the right type of character and the right type of squad for the Premier League – talented, motivated players who want to play together.

“We were running very fast without spending enough time analysing every decision that we made. You learn from your mistakes and we have learnt a lot. Hopefully the body of the squad will stay, but Harry will want a squad which can survive at any level.”

Beard confirmed that the site of their current ground will become a residential area. He said: “Loftus Road will be developed and the owners and investors will look at the best return. I think we are looking at about 500 residences.” London 24

Interview with QPR’s Multi-Media Manager, Adam Hulme


Over the coming months, Emma Vetriano will be getting to know the leaders in digital sport discussing all things social media.
To kick things off, we have an interview with Adam Hulme, Multi-Media Manager at Queens Park Rangers.
Adam has been instrumental in the growth QPR’s social media footprint, and is responsible for creating and managing the club’s on-going multimedia content and campaigns across all of the club’s social media channels.
EV: How many fans do you have on your social channels (followers, fans, subscribers, etc)?
AH: Facebook Likes (231,558), Twitter followers (150,852), YouTube subscribers (7,377 and 2M+views), Google+ (8,570), Ustream (4,053 followers and 1.2M views), and Instagram (6,220).
EV: Which social platform receives the most engagement?
AH: There all receive high levels of engagement but obviously different platforms encourage different engagement. Twitter/Facebook/Google+ are pretty much 247, while Instagram/Ustream/YouTube are at their highest during a live event (London Call-In, Press Conference). But overall, I would say Twitter, due to the sheer number of followers and the close relationship that fans now have with football and Twitter. Not to mention, Twitter allows easy two-way conversations between ourselves and our fan base around the world.
EV: How important is the use of different types of content on the various social platforms?
AH: Very important. I think it’s important not to constantly replicate content across all your social media channels, otherwise what’s the point in following different platforms. Also, not every channel is set up in the same way, so it’s important to understand how fans use it and what they expect to get out of it.
EV: What do QPR use social media for?
AH: Several reasons, and I think it’s important to do so. Build a bigger online fan base, improve communications with our fans, raise awareness of QPR, allow us to break our news first… the list can go on!
EV: Do you have a preference for a specific social media channel? And if so why?
AH: Personally, I prefer Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. Although I used to be a massive Facebook fans. From a club persepective, we don’t have a preference as we like to provide exclusive and engaging content across them all. Twitter allows us to be personal. YouTube allows us to be more creative. Instagram allows us to be more insightful. Facebook allows fans to communicate with each other more… they are all really good tools. I know that sounds like I’m sitting on the fence but I genially believe.
EV: Do you monitor players personal accounts to protect the QPR brand? How?
AH: Yes we do, as I imagine the majority of clubs do. We work closely with BlueClaw and their player monitoring tool ‘Social Pundit’.
EV: Will QPR be following in Southampton FC’s footsteps and joining Snapchat? If yes, how will you utilise this platform? If no, why not?
AH: It’s another great little social media tool, especially with a younger crowd. At the moment, we’re unsure. We don’t just jump onto any platform because other clubs have set up an account. Although it is something we are looking into, with a number of other ventures.
EV: Do you promote your social media channels offline?
AH: Yes, you’re obviously aware of our dugout use (see our previous blog post). We utilise the matchday programme, concourse TV and big screen for home games, as well as the obvious back grounds, etc.

 EV: Whats the most challenging or exciting aspect of running the QPR digital campaigns?
AH: They’re always challenging, but in a great way. My favourite part is seeing fans reaction when a campaign gets launched. It’s always fascinating. I love seeing honest fan reaction and as a club we are very open to that, I think you have to be. Fans are at the soul of any football club.
EV: What was the best Digital Sport campaign you witnessed in 2013, non QPR?
AH: I like what our good friends at Southampton are doing. Always keep in good contact with them and I liked the hashtag/stand campaign. Another one, not really a campaign, more just a viral video was when LeBron James tackles a fan whom sinks a $75,000 shot!

Chief executive Philip Beard says attracting new fans and generating income on non-matchdays must be among QPR’s top priorities if the club moves to Old Oak.

Rangers’ owners, fronted by chairman Tony Fernandes, are keen for the team to play at a 40,000-capacity arena which will be part of a huge development near Willesden Junction rail station.

With plans for the area to become a commercial hub with a flagship events-venue, as well as thousands of new homes, the project could generate a fortune if it comes to fruition.

And the club are hopeful that the establishment of New Queens Park – seen as effectively a new town – will enable QPR to appeal to locals as well as football fans in general.

Beard said: “Everywhere I go I meet people who are QPR fans who don’t come regularly to Loftus Road.

“I think with a new stadium we would look to attract a broader, wider fan-base. If there’s going to new homes in the area we’re talking about, then you’d like to think you’d be able to get new fans from the local area.

“If we go ahead with this we will be as close to Loftus Road as you’d have hoped to be and are almost going back to the home of Queens Park Rangers originally.

“But we need to grow our fan-base. We need to make the facility attractive not only for the current fans to come to but also new fans to come to, while also protecting the identity of the club.

“We’re going to do everything we possibly can to make sure that every single QPR fan who comes to Loftus Road is engaged and is passionate about what we’re trying to achieve at a new stadium.

“But if we’re going to have double the capacity, we’re going to need to make sure that it’s a facility that new fans and latent QPR fans want to come to.”

Beard says the club “have some very good people looking at logos, branding, identity and everything else” but that the immediate focus has to be on winning promotion back to the Premier League and becoming stable in the top flight.

In the longer term, if the move to the new complex goes ahead it would enable QPR to benefit from a number of different revenue streams.

Current plans include the building of a Wembley Arena-style venue next to the main facility, which would host concerts and the like.

Beard explained: “If a football club plays less than 30 home games a season at their home ground, that means you’ve got 300-plus days a year when it’s not being used. That doesn’t make commercial sense.

“It doesn’t make sense from a football or business point of view and also for the community – if we’re going to put this right at the heart of this new area, it’s important that we ‘sweat the assets’.

“So, what we’ll be looking to achieve is a stadium that can adapt its areas and facilities for other events, conventions, concerts and conferences.

“The plan is to have a hotel on-site and we’ll be looking to win business [away] from core Central London venues and bring them out to New Queens Park so that we can use the stadium for other events.
“The initial plans have us building an arena on the site of the stadium for concerts, conferences and things like that.

“Our aim will be to use the facility for a lot more than just football, albeit that it will be the home of Queens Park Rangers.

“It’s really important that we understand that it is a home for Queens Park Rangers but it’s also going to be hosting a lot of other activities as well.” West London Sport

QPR's Nedum Onouha 'striving to do more' after death of his inspirational mother puts football into perspective

Former Manchester City central defender talks about the loss of his mother, Queens Park Rangers' struggles last season and their resurgence this term

Nedum Onuoha is famously the footballer with three grade 'A’ A-levels whose dedication as a Manchester City schoolboy was such that, if he was ever late, the academy staff would joke that they were more worried about the bus driver.

By common consent, Onuoha epitomises the phrase 'model professional’ and so it is striking to hear the critical honesty that seeps through the self-analysis of his playing career. It is also deeply moving to hear how “a strong reality check” was derived from a personal tragedy that placed football in its proper perspective. Onuoha’s mum, Dr Anthonia Onuoha, had been an ever-present at matches involving her son until she fell seriously ill with Cancer. She died last year and, having offered the support on which Onuoha’s early career thrived, her memory is now providing a lasting inspiration. “She was massive in my career,” says Onuoha. “She literally went to all my games, no matter where it was. She would always find a way.

“Before she passed, I was here [at Queens Park Rangers]. I wasn’t really playing. I was doing all right in training. It was a strong reality check.

“I just realised that I needed to strive to do more. It’s only within the past year or 18 months that I have really started to understand everything about the sport. A lot of people have said that I have a lot of potential but I don’t want to be the guy who has got potential. I want to be someone who people want to be in their side.” Onuoha was five when he arrived with his parents in England from Nigeria and it is the value of hard-work, irrespective of the obstacles, that he regards as one of her great examples. “There’s a saying that you chop your own wood and you feel double the benefit,” he says. “She was never given anything for free. She has had to work her socks off for everything. She had a PhD in environmental sciences and, a bit later in life, that led to people saying that she was overqualified for jobs that she wanted.

Despite the unsurprising admission that his head was “a little bit all over the place” at times last season, Onuoha remains one of the few QPR players whose on-field attitude was never in question.

After relegation, chairman Tony Fernandes accused some players of taking the club’s money without giving their all. Onuoha is sympathetic to that anger but believes that a central difficulty was simply the process of integrating so many players in such a short space of time. “I think one of the difficult jobs in a football club is to be the owner,” he says. “It is your investment, your company and business but you can’t control everything on a day-to-day basis that actually defines the club’s success.

“As much as things were bad last season, they were never as bad as people were saying. It sort of happened at Manchester City. You bring in players and they have to integrate. I feel for the people who were here six months in, couldn’t really speak the language but saw that people who had been here longer were getting frustrated at them because they were not doing the jobs that were expected of them. City are going doing better now because they are not bringing in lots and lots of new players. They have a core. In the same way, if we do get promoted, I think we will be in a better situation.” The situation, quite clearly, is already dramatically improved. QPR sit top of the Championship ahead of tomorrow’s match against third-placed Leicester City and Onuoha, even allowing for a hamstring injury, has been one of their players of the season. Central to the change was a pre-season training schedule of quite exceptional rigour.

“It was so hard that you only completed it if your heart was in it,” says Onuoha. “You wanted to just say, 'I can’t do this any more’, but when you look around and have your team-mates there, you carry on.

“Everyone was in the mood to work to get back in the Premier League.” At 27, Onuoha should be approaching his prime. He previously won 20 caps for the England Under-21 team and, although he also remains eligible for Nigeria, does not want to make any firm decisions until he feels that his own club form merits international selection. Regular first-team football with QPR in the Premier League is the target following eight seasons at Manchester City where the likes of Sylvain Distin, Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott have restricted his opportunities.

Beyond that, Onuoha would like to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of young home-grown players. “If I was to retire soon, I think one of the things I would do is go and speak to younger players,” he says. “I’d say it’s important to look after your body to the nth degree. You have to listen to what the coaches say. There is no problem doing more after training in terms of extra ball work. Some of that I think is perceived to be a bit busy.”

The deadline for submitting evidence to the FA’s commission into the future of English football expires in two weeks. Greg Dyke would do well to pay a visit to the QPR’s training ground.

Mad about The Hoops: Besides managing Westports Holdings Bhd, Ruben is also a co-owner of English Championship League football club Queens Park Rangers.


ALTHOUGH many may think Ruben Emir Gnanalingam is a busy man who probably does not much time to spare on his off-days (if he happens to have any), the 39-year-old begs to differ.

Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, the CEO of Westports Holdings Berhad is not an “all work and no play” guy.

In a recent interview, he shared with StarMetro his love for sports from his school days and where it has taken him today in the business world.

Having had his early education at Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur, Ruben said he was active in field events such as discuss throw, softball and shot put to which he also represented the school for it.

The eldest of three went on to further his education in England where he represented his college in badminton.

“I have always been a fan of football and continued to play some form of it till a few years ago when I injured my ankle,

“Nowadays, I stick to golf which I picked up after university,” said the Eton College and the London School of Economics graduate.

Growing up, Ruben said his parents had always encouraged him and his siblings to give a shot at different kinds of sports before finally picking what they fancy.

“I have always been open to numerous sports and my parents always wanted us to try everything.

“The sport I chose at various points in my life so far have been driven by what I felt I could succeed in at that point,” he said, adding that he also made sure that he would enjoy playing whatever he was competing in.

In 2010, Ruben took over locally-based basketball team, KL Dragons, with longtime friends Datuk Wira Dani Daim and Datuk Robin Tan, which led him to find new love for the sport.

“When you get involved in clubs like these, every aspect of the club will run through your veins. Every goal and every point scored is celebrated more. Every goal and every point let in hurts a lot more, too,” said Ruben, who also co-owns English football club Queens Park Rangers with his partners, aviation tycoon Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun and the Mittal family from India.

Besides managing one of Asia’s top logistics company, Ruben also juggles his time carefully with the two sports franchises from time to time.

“It used to take up more time when we first got involved but this has reduced over time as we have good people running both teams so we do not have to be there as often,” he said.

When asked if sports has changed his way at managing the company his father Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam built, the sports fanatic had only positive words to offer.

“In some ways, these sports are also businesses to us. There are revenue and costs involved similar in managing any other business,

“The most important being that people are your greatest asset and that teamwork is crucial. All of us were competitive business people before getting involved. It was probably why we got involved in the first place — the joys of competing,” he said adding that getting the right mix of people was never easy.

What was more difficult for him was getting his men fight for the same goal.

“My participation in sports at a young age has instilled in me life-long values that I continuously practice till today.

“I have learned to persevere and to never give up, even when I face challenges that may seem difficult to overcome. These values have brought me far especially in my corporate journey,” he said.

With the ongoing 27th Sea Games in Myanmmar coming to an end, Ruben wants the Malaysian team to work and push themselves to achieve their dreams.

“Just like any other competition, every athlete should just go out there and give it their best shot. You may not get another chance and there is no prizes for holding back.

I am hoping Malaysia comes back with a lot of medals and personally will be rooting for the basketball team as some of our KL Dragons players will be involved,” he said.

QPR want Redknapp for the long-term - Fernandes


If some Tottenham Hotspur fans still have a hankering for their former boss Redknapp, with the North Londoners seeking a replacement for sacked Andre Villas Boas, Fernandes is confident his manager is settled.

"You don't have to be a professor at the London School of Economics to realise that the most successful teams have been teams with the longest managers, whether it is (Arsene) Wenger at Arsenal or Alex Ferguson or David Moyes when he was at Everton," he told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

"I hope and pray that Harry will be with me for a long time. He is the best of the best in my opinion.

"He is a top quality manager. Many people come after him but I think he is very happy working with me. I think he has found me a very different chairman from others," added the Malaysian aviation entrepreneur.

Fernandes said he would be the last person to say 'he'll be with me until I die' but added he would like that to be the case.

QPR were relegated from the Premier League last season after Redknapp replaced the sacked Mark Hughes, now manager of Stoke City, but they are currently two points clear at the top of the Championship.

The club have big ambitions, unveiling this month plans for a new 40,000 seat stadium not far from their historic 18,000 seat Loftus Road home in West London.

The ground may change but Fernandes was adamant that traditions would be upheld.

The AirAsia boss said he was open to selling naming rights for the stadium if that allowed him to keep ticket prices down but he ruled out a change of home kit from blue to red, as Malaysian-owned Cardiff City did.

"My life is about making it cheaper. It is not cheap going to watch a football game," said Fernandes, speaking after announcing his latest Airbus plane order worth $6 billion for AirAsia group.

"Anything that can help me reduce the price for the average fan I will do."

Nor would he countenance a situation like Hull City, where Egyptian-born owner Assem Allam has applied to change the name to Hull Tigers despite a fierce backlash from fans.

"I take a different approach to life. I like to talk to my fans, I like to get their feedback. You see me on Twitter talking about whether the stadium should be 30,35,40,000," said Fernandes.

"I don't think we have had a single fan against our move because we have managed it differently. I am in the pub with the fans, I am in the stands with the fans. Although they may not physically own the club, the fans are part of the club, without them there is no club, so I think their views have to be taken into consideration.

"You buy a tradition," continued Fernandes, who also owns the Caterham Formula One team. "So you try and maintain it.

"That doesn't mean we won't alter the badge. I'd love to change (the strip) to red but we bought a club that's blue, so we'll stick with blue. I think QPR is unique name but it's like buying Harrods, why do you want to change it?"
