Sporting Life Match Report: Plymouth 3 QPR 1 - November 19, 2005
Plymouth moved out of the Coca-Cola Championship relegation zone as they ended a dismal recent run with a convincing victory against QPR.
Paul Wotton opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Mathias Doumbe's first goal since October 2004 gave Argyle a two-goal cushion at the break.
Nick Chadwick's header made the game safe, with substitute Shabazz Baidoo's close-range finish a consolation for the visitors.
Plymouth, who went into the match lying second from bottom in the table after five games without a win, named an unchanged line-up.
Gareth Ainsworth came in to replace Dean Sturridge for QPR. The striker aggravated a hamstring injury in training this week.
Argyle went ahead from the first attack of the afternoon. Midfielder David Norris was clean through and tried to round goalkeeper Simon Royce.
Royce brought him down and was rightly booked, with Wotton slamming the resulting penalty into the roof of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Tony Capaldi, who was in action for Northern Ireland in midweek, almost made it two shortly afterwards but his header was caught by Royce.
Kevin Gallen, reverting to a more attacking role, sent a header goalwards as QPR looked to hit back, but Akos Buzsaky was alert to clear.
Plymouth were on top, though, and only a superb save by the feet of Royce denied Chadwick as he drilled in a shot from 12 yards.
Royce was Rangers' saviour again in the 28th minute, tipping a stunning 30-yard free-kick from Buzsaky around the post as the Pilgrims kept up the pressure.
Tony Pulis' men finally doubled their advantage through an unlikely source.
A Buzsaky corner was headed down by Wotton into the path of Doumbe, and he volleyed the ball into the top corner from six yards.
QPR midfielder Martin Rowlands made his long-awaited return to first-team action shortly after the restart, coming on for Tom Doherty.
His first contribution was to bring down Capaldi on the left, and it was from the resulting free-kick that Plymouth made it three.
Buzsaky picked out Chadwick, and his deft header gave Royce no chance.
Rangers brought on Baidoo in the 58th minute, and three minutes later he had pulled goal back.
A Lee Cook corner from the right fell to the striker, and he lashed the ball past goalkeeper Romain Larrieu from close in.
QPR, buoyed by the goal, almost grabbed a quickfire second, but Gallen's powerful header was tipped over by the Frenchman.
Ainsworth forced a fine save from Larrieu with a stinging volley at the death but the home side held on.
