Sunday People -QPR CASH IN ON COLGAN CLANGER - Chris Davies
BARNSLEY goalkeeper Nick Colgan took the season of goodwill too far by gifting QPR their 16th-minute winner.
Rangers' relegation worries eased after Colgan's howler allowed Martin Rowlands to score - but Barnsley must fear a speedy return to League One after last season's promotion success.
Colgan had Rowlands' angled left-footed drive from 12 yards covered but allowed the ball to slip under his body and into the net. And Rangers boss John Gregory didn't give a hoot that a goalkeeping howler saw a run of five consecutive losses halted.
"This was a massive result,'' he said. "It was the classic 'who-cares-about-the performance?' We got three points and we stopped the rot, even though it was pretty dire.
"We got a bit of luck - it was a bad mistake by the keeper but you don't care. We're in a relegation fight and they are one of our rivals.''
Barnsley caretaker-boss Simon Davey refused to criticise Colgan. "Every time a goal is scored there will be some error along the way,'' he said. "Nick pulled off some great saves in the game. It's a collective effort, we win together and lose together.''
Excellent
QPR's win saw them move six points clear of the drop zone, though two goals in six games underlines their lack of fire-power.
Colgan was initially Barnsley's hero with excellent saves from Ray Jones and Steve Lomas before his blooper.
Leon Knight should have equalised with Barnsley's only real chance but his goalbound shot was cleared off the line by Damion Stewart, to the relief and delight of the home fans who had booed the visiting striker's every touch.
Knight had a spell on loan at Rangers from Chelsea in 2001 but he was accused of diving during a game for Brighton at Loftus Road and that has stayed in QPR supporters' memory.
"I thought we deserved a point for our second-half performance,'' said Davey. "We didn't capitalise on the chances we created. The first 30 minutes were high tempo. We didn't ride the storm and conceded a goal.''
Barnsley's Brian Howard left Loftus Road with his arm in a sling after a first-half challenge by Ray Jones left the midfielder with a damaged shoulder.
"We'll assess the extent tomorrow,'' said Davey.

BBC- QPR 1-0 Barnsley
Martin Rowlands' 15th-minute strike ended QPR's run of five straight losses and gave them a four-point cushion over the Championship's bottom four teams.
Rowlands cut inside Neil Austin and hit a shot that squirmed under Tykes keeper Nick Colgan and into the net.
Barnsley's improved second-half form might have earned them a point but their finishing let them down.
Rowlands, Lee Cook and Dexter Blackstock all had chances to double Rangers' lead in the later stages.
QPR manager John Gregory:
"It is a massive result. It was the classic situation where you say: 'Who cares about the performance?' We stopped the rot.
"It was pretty dire for most of the game but we had forgotten how to win.
"After we went 1-0 up, we did not know what to do next. We became careless and allowed Barnsley to have good possession and they had a go."
Barnsley caretaker boss Simon Davey:
"We played well in the second half and deserved a point, but we did not capitalise on our chances.
"Nick made some important saves at other times in the game. We all have to take responsibility when we lose matches, just as we do when we win.
"We have to put our own house in order, so we do not need to rely on others." BBC
John Gregory's Comments - Official Site - CHRISTMAS CHEER
John Gregory was pleased as punch after the 1-0 victory against Barnsley at Loftus Road.
Martin Rowlands bagged the only goal of the game as Rangers returned to winning ways with a deserved victory over the Tykes.
"We kept a clean sheet and I'm delighted with that,'' Gregory told www.qpr.co.uk.
"It was awful having to suffer that for the best part of 70 minutes, but we got the three points so I'm delighted.
"I would happily settle for a result like that and three points every week.
"Barnsley played well, but we ground out the victory.''
Gregory bemoaned the part played by referee Mr Booth, adding: "The referee seemed to give a lot of things against us. I was very surprised with his overall performance - he was poor.''
The R's gaffer revealed he expects to make changes to the side for the trip to Birmingham City on Boxing Day.
"We've got five games in 14 days, which is ridiculous and we're going to need every man Jack.
"The boys that didn't start today will get their chance over the holiday programme.''
Gregory also indicated that Michael Mancienne's loan deal could be extended until the end of the season, commenting: "We're pretty confident that will be the case.
"I had a long meeting with Frank Arnesen and Neil Bath on Friday, where we discussed a number of things, and it looks like we'll get him until the end of the season which is great.'' QPR
