GRZEGORZ RASIAK and Bradley Wright-Phillips struck in the final nine minutes to clinch a crucial victory for Southampton and keep their drive for automatic promotion on track.
It looked as if George Burley's side would have to settle for their fifth draw in six games despite dominating at Loftus Road.
But Rasiak finally provided the breakthrough with his 17th goal of the season nine minutes from time.
Then Wright-Phillips confirmed the victory in injury time.
Much talk last week had surrounded Saints' teenage left-back Gareth Bale and a possible £8 million move to Manchester United.
And Bale showed why the Premiership leaders are so keen to sign him after only six minutes.
The 17-year-old swung in a dangerous free-kick which keeper Simon Royce failed to clear on two occasions.
The ball fell to Rasiak but he headed wide from eight yards out.
QPR midfielder Marc Bircham narrowly missed the target on 13 minutes but limped out of the action soon after and Saints took control with Mario Licka leading from midfield.
Royce did brilliantly to save from Licka after Bale set him up to let fly with a first-time left-foot volley.
Ex-Saints striker Dexter Blackstock should have done better nine minutes before the break but shot wide.
Bale created another opening four minutes after the restart when Darren Powell rose to meet his free-kick but directed his header wide.
Jermaine Wright performed heroics to prevent Ray Jones giving QPR an unlikely lead in the 68th minute.
Rasiak should have broken the deadlock when Royce fumbled Wright's low shot but he failed to control the ball.
But the Pole made amends with time running out as he bundled home from close range after another Bale corner caused confusion.
Substitute Wright-Phillips made the points safe a minute into injury time.
