Juande Ramos has revealed which positions Real Madrid will be reinforcing in January, explained how and when he will give the club's homegrown players a chance, he reflected on his first league game in charge at Barcelona and thinks that the league title is not decided.
Juande Ramos has revealed that Real Madrid will be signing a right-winger and central midfielder in January but he is also looking forward to players coming back from injury and giving the youth a chance.
The new Bernabéu head coach earned praise at the weekend for Los Merengues' performance in Barcelona, but he explained that he has ignored all reaction and is only concerned with reshaping his squad.
With speculation rife about which players will arrive, Ramos has confirmed that two players will join and despite the reports, neither of them will be a striker.
"Clearly we want a right winger and a central midfielder. The club is working to find them and I hope they arrive soon. I want to players quality and desire who are ready to play," he told AS.
"I have only been working here a week, but I can say that injuries have already had an effect on the backbone of the team. If you have Pepe, [Gabriel] Heinze, [Mahamadou] Diarrà, [Arjen] Robben and [Ruud] van Nistelrooy out it means that you are 50 per cent down on the team that won the league last season.
"While I am coach Madrid, will not give in. We will not give up on anything. What is important is that we are competitive again and that was my first task when taking over. We will be even more so in January when we have players back from injury and some signings."
In recent weeks Madrid's youth policy has been under the spotlight, with not many players being given a chance, but Ramos could change all that although Daniel Parejo will continue learning at Queens Park Rangers.
"He is a player and there is an option for the future. But first we are going to spend our time on our two priorities. If that does not work out then we will assess him," the coach continued.
Youth Opportunities
"I had been here five days and I could not know exactly what each young player has to offer. If I had come in knowing that [Miguel] Palanca would play so well then I could have considered starting him and putting Sneijder on the bench, but is not a serious matter because Robben will be back next week and Sneijder is injured.
"I have always supprted the youth policy and Palanca has shown me that it is worth looking at more. The chance came and he took it can from now on he will work with the first team. The boy has earned that much.
"If there are young players with quality, drive and a winning mentality then you have to have a look at them. But there is no moral obligation to give them all a chance."
Ramos is also keen to see the players that he has available change their style to improve themselves and to be able to help the team - starting with new signing Rafael van der Vaart,
"He should change the way he plays a bit, based on the strategy we have and on his free-kick ability. Our aim is to improve individuals for the benefit of the team," he added..." Lucas Brown, Goal.com
