- Hasty Routledge departure leaves Bluebirds fuming
- CARDIFF CITY players are said to be furious about the manner in which Wayne Routledge left the club yesterday.
- The quicksilver winger shocked the Bluebirds when he drove away from the club’s Vale of Glamorgan training HQ without a word to manager Dave Jones or the City players.
- Routledge prematurely ended the loan spell at Ninian Park which revived his career to sign for Queens Park Rangers instead.
- Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale had been in talks with the player and his agent over personal terms this week.
- But City say the first they knew of his departure came when Aston Villa rang to say they had recalled the winger and were selling him to “another club.”
- A couple of hours on, it became clear Championship rivals QPR had snapped up Routledge.
- City took Routledge from Villa reserves and gave him the chance to shine in the Championship.
- The Bluebirds offered Routledge a three-and-a-half year contract which would have made him the highest paid player at the club, but mega-rich QPR went even higher.
Sources in London say Routledge agreed a signing-on fee of more than £200,000 and weekly earnings of £20,000-plus a week.
“Wayne left the hotel and drove past the club training headquarters without a word to anybody,” said a Cardiff City insider.
- “It’s terrible he apparently didn’t even think about saying goodbye. It’s his decision, but he might have popped in to say thanks.
-“But he didn’t say a word to anybody before leaving. The way he left is annoying, but Wayne has gone and won’t be back. It’s his loss.
-“We still have a quality squad and our aims for the season have not changed.”
Routledge should have played in Championship matches against Derby at home next Saturday and at Birmingham City before the end of his loan spell. But he left South Wales at 9.30am yesterday to drive up the M4 to London.
Cardiff manager Dave Jones said: “It’s disappointing we could not do a deal with Wayne, but he has decided where he wants to play.
“The chairman and directors did everything possible to keep Wayne at this football club.”
After sealing his move, Routledge told the QPR official website: “I’m thrilled to be here. The manager has a great vision about where he wants to take the club and he sees me playing a big part in that.
“The reason I am here is because the manager showed an unbelievable desire to get me to QPR and I am delighted to seal the move.”
Rangers boss Paulo Sousa said: “I am delighted we’ve been able to bring Wayne to QPR. There were a number of clubs interested in signing him, but we’ve got our man and I couldn’t be happier" Wales on Line

- His performances at Loftus Road have attracted the interest of a number of clubs with Bolton, Wolves and his former club United all keeping tabs on him.
