QPR set £1million limit on summer target Cox

QPR HAVE set a limit of £1million for Simon Cox - and even that comes with strings attached.

The Fulham Chronicle was first to flag up Rangers' interest in the Swindon Town hotshot more than a month ago.

But the Robins have also got wind of interest from West Brom and Leicester - and will play hardball over the price for the 32-goal machine.

The Hoops have already said no to the £1.5m asking price for the 22-year-old - although a lot will depend on how much they eventually get for Dexter Blackstock and Lee Camp - both set to join Nottingham Forest.

Swindon boss Danny Wilson was in no doubt his goal machine was on his way, no matter what.

He said: "I'll be disappointed if he does leave, but I'm a realist, I think there's a good chance it will happen."

Rangers want to pay a flat fee of £500k up front with add-ons based on appearances and club success.

A source added: "There are plenty of potential targets. So if Swindon think they can get £1.5million for Cox, they should bite the club's arm off."

Alan Curbishley won't become Rs' next manager - because the ex-West Ham boss is preparing a court case against his former employers that would muddy the waters if he were to join QPR.

The 51-year-old is reported as wanting £3m from the Hammers in compensation - with the case not due to be heard until November.

Chairman Flavio Briatore has been away on Formula One duty - but returned this week to set the managerial agenda, which won't include Curbishley, Alan Pardew, Dennis Wise, Paul Ince, Dave Jones (Cardiff boss) - and original target Darren Ferguson, at Peterborough. Ealing Gazette

- QPR RECKON they will have appointed a new manager by this time next week - with former Burnley boss Steve Cotterill the surprise choice just ahead of three other candidates.
- However, the white smoke is far from wafting out of the Loftus Road chimney, with chairman Flavio Briatore going away to the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend to ponder through the din of F1 cars about the next man who will lead Rangers into the fast lane.
- The Fulham Chronicle has learned ex-Championship bosses Aidy Boothroyd, Jim Magilton and Colin Calderwood also have CVs on Briatore's desk, while in the meanwhile, others have ruled themselves out.
- Steve Coppell got the phone call the morning after resigning as Reading boss, having failed to get the Royals into the Championship play-off.

But the respected coach, who also has previous history in west London with Brentford, declared he wanted a three-month break from football and will go to the USA with his family for an extended holiday.

Claudio Ranieri was sacked by Juventus on Monday, but there will be no sentimental return to west London for the former Chelsea man, despite his close ties with both Briatore and sporting director Gianni Paladini.

The demands of candidates have taken up most of the board's consideration, with the winning applicant expected to wheel-and-deal with the players he inherits rather than writing then seven-figure cheques for new ones.

Channel 4 Italy - Guberti's waiting for Roma Thursday 21 May, 2009


The agent of Bari star Stefano Guberti has revealed that his client refused a contract from Queens Park Rangers in the hope of joining Roma.

Guberti has been an important member of Antonio Conte's Bari side that have secured a place in Serie A next season.

The 24-year-old has become a target for a host of teams because he will become a free agent this summer.

“We are interested in Roma's project and Stefano sees them as his first choice,” Claudio De Nicola said on Radio Centro Suono Sport.

“He is a lad at the start of his career, even if he has done very well this season.

“Last week I spoke to the Roma directors and Guberti could be offered a four-year deal.

“Within a month I hope to have a deal completed. We turned down an offer from Flavio Briatore's QPR to wait for Roma.” Channel 4
