Paul Warburton/London Informer - Rangers quoted £10m for Leeds hitman Beckford
QPR have been told they will have to pay £10million for a forward they could have had for £10,000 four years ago.
Last night (Wednesday) Leeds supremo Ken Bates quoted Rangers through the roof for Ealing-born marksman Jermaine Beckford, with the former Chelsea chairman adamant he was not going to let his star striker go for anything but a record Rangers fee.Beckford will be out of contract with the fallen giants at the end of the season - and Rs are keen to add firepower as they languish in the bottom half of the table following Tuesday night's defeat at Bristol City.
They also hope they might persuade Bates and Leeds to accept a compromise deal that sees the Yorkshire club get a massive sell-on fee as well as extras for appearances and goals.
An Rs insider admitted the club coveted the 25-year-old, who was on target again for Leeds on Tuesday night. He almost drifted out of football after being dumped by Chelsea's youth set-up in 2003.
"It looks as if it could be hard work to get Beckford, but you never know," said the source.
After Chelsea showed him the door, three seasons with Wealdstone, including a loan spell with Uxbridge, saw Beckford score 54 goals in 82 appearances for the Stones in the Ryman Premier Division, including
one spell in which he scored 35 in 40.
It was during this 2005-06 campaign, when Beckford was banging them in for fun, that Rs boss Ian
Holloway had a look, but decided Beckford might struggle to make it in a Rangers side that eventually escaped relegation by just one place.]

London Informer - Hall fears Dexter will hurt QPR
- FITZ Hall admits he is worried his pal Dexter Blackstock may come back to haunt his old mates when he returns to Loftus Road with new club Nottingham Forest.
Last season's top scorer for Rangers was surprisingly offloaded in pre-season and former team-mate Hall, a big fan, says he was sorry to see him go.
"He's a natural goalscorer," Hall said. "He's always in the right place at the right time. He challenges for every ball and never gives up.
"He's a competitor and that's what we've got to look out for. We can't afford to take our eyes off him because he always pops up and scores goals."
Hall, so eager for Rangers to record their first league win of the season after the midweek reverse at Bristol City, added: "We played together when we were at Southampton and I played against him when I went to Crystal Palace, which was a bit strange because we are good friends.
"I don't think it will just be me thinking that on Saturday, but we've got to put that friendship to one side and get on with the game and try and take three points off them.
"I was sorry to see him go because he's a very good player, but these things happen.
"I spoke to him a couple of days ago and he said he was really hoping to be in the team for Saturday. I hope he does play and I wish him all the best. I'm sure he'll do well there.
"But we just want to pick up three points now. We haven't played badly in any of the games we've played. Just lapses in concentration now and then have cost us and if we turn that round, we should pick up wins sooner rather than later." London Informer
BBC Chris Charles - Review of the Week
"...- As for my lot, well forgive me for once again repeating that wry observation from a QPR messageboard wag, but we really do seem to be the only team in the world that's been taken over by billionaires and got worse. Flogged our best striker, didn't replace him and currently sit 17th with two points and two goals - not rocket science, is it?
- After the Bristol City defeat the boards were awash with fans moaning and groaning that nothing had improved since last season, with this post from Hunter Hoop on Loft For Words particularly catching the eye:
- "Coming to football grounds near you...The Queens Park Rangers boutique film company presents...'DÉJÀ VU', starring the same cast that brought you: 'Score in a Brothel? You Must be Joking!' and 'Sack the Manager'.
- "Unbelievably frustrating,' says The Independent. 'Boring,' says The Times. 'I fell asleep" - Christopher Tookey of the Daily Mail. 'Funniest film of the year!' says Paul Ross."
