THE MANAGERIAL COMMENTS

QPR OFFICIAL SITE - GAFFER: WE DESERVED MORE
- Jim Magilton was adamant his QPR side deserved more from their trip to Ashton Gate, after Nicky Maynard's second half strike sealed victory for the Robins.
- The R's hit the woodwork and had two fine efforts saved by Dean Gerken, as Magilton tasted defeat for the first time as Rangers boss.
- "I think they started well, as they do here, but we dealt with a succession of corners very well, with the back four and Radek outstanding," he told www.qpr.co.uk.
- "We needed to take a lot more care of the ball, which we did at the start of the second half, when we created the most clear-cut chance of the match.
- "We didn't take it though and that's the fine margins in this division."
- Magilton added: "As away performances go, I can live with that.
- "The quality was there for all to see tonight. We're creating chances and if we maintain that attacking nature, we'll win more than we lose.
- "I'm not concerned with the results, because our performances have warranted far more than the two draws we've registered.
- "Of course I'd be worried if the quality of our play was poor, but it has been to a good standard in the last week or so, so I'm not concerned at all." QPR


SPORTING LIFE - JOHNSON LAMENTS VELICKA BLOW
- Bristol City's joy at Nicky Maynard's late winner against QPR was tempered by sympathy for new signing Andrius Velicka after he suffered what manager Gary Johnson admits could be a "pretty serious" injury.
- The club's new season-long loan signing from Scottish champions Rangers was taken off on a stretcher after being introduced as a 64th minute substitute.
- An early diagnosis is that the striker has damaged knee ligaments and could face a lengthy lay-off.
- But seven points from three games and a third goal for £2.25million striker Maynard still had manager Gary Johnson smiling at his post-match press conference.
- He said: "While we are delighted with the win and Nicky's fantastic late strike, our thoughts are with Andrius.
- "It's a bad break for us but even worse for the lad himself.
- "There was no contact involved when he went down, which is always a worry, and it looks pretty serious.
- "I thought our first-half display was outstanding and just lacked the finishing touches to some great moves.
- "In the end Nicky has come up with a special winning goal and we held on as Rangers threw everything at us during seven minutes of injury time."
- Maynard's rocket shot from the edge of the box on 78 minutes followed his last gasp winner against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
- It left Rangers boss Jim Magilton disappointed, but far from down-hearted after three Championship games without a win.
- He said: "If we keep playing like that a victory will come and that's all we need to get us going.
- "There is such a fine line between success and failure in this league and at the moment we aren't quite getting the breaks.
- "The bad injury to their player actually came at a time when we were on top and the stoppage allowed them to draw breath and regroup.
- "We had a great chance when we hit a post in the second half and that is the difference for us at the moment."
- The culprit for Rangers' miss was Moroccan striker Adel Taarabt, on loan from Tottenham.
- He some how contrived to hit the woodwork with a volley after Wayne Routledge's run and cross had set up a clear opening.
- City had missed the best first-half chances through their nippy attacked Danny Haynes, who blazed over on six minutes and shot wide when clear on 23.
- Rangers keeper Radek Cerny saved well from Maynard and Akos Buzsaky cleared off the line from a Lewin Nyatanga header as Rangers came under pressure.
- But the visitors stepped up the pace in the second half and were looking the more likely winners when Maynard's strike came out of the blue.

- Gary Johnson felt his players "stood up to be counted" as they earned a 1-0 win over QPR thanks to Nicky Maynard's goal.
- City dominated in the first half without breaking the deadlock, but despite a fightback from the R's in the second 45, and an agonising injury to debutant Andrius Velicka, the hosts still battled to victory.
- Speaking on Player about the thrilling finale, Gary said: "We felt at the time of Velicka's injury we were just about getting on top.
- "We opted to use the substitution to go back to three in middle, one in behind and two up front. We had to get one of the two front lads in.
- "It was a fantastic strike from Nicky Maynard. He and Danny (Haynes) deserved a goal tonight.
- "In the first half we were magnificent and how we didn't come in two or three goals up I don't know.
- "At the end they threw caution to the wind and it was five attackers against our six defenders, especially in the seven minutes of added on time.
- "But everyone did their job tonight, including the crowd."

- Velicka's debut as a substitute lasted just five minutes as he twisted awkwardly holding his knee after getting his studs caught in the ground.
- Gary added: "It looks bad, most likely a cruciate injury but it's too early to say. We have to have it scanned but you just have to feel sorry for the player. It's unlucky for him and we're all gutted for him."
- The manager had extra praise for the home support on the night.
- "I think people are beginning to realise how strong the Championship is," he said.
- "You're never going to get it all your own way and you have to stand up and be counted. I think we did that today as a club.
- "We have to wait and see where QPR get on in their next few games, but it's big result for us. We're now five points clear of QPR after just three games, which means they've got some catching up to do.
- "We're now level on points at the top with five teams. Cardiff are top and we can really look forward to going there on Sunday now - but we'll enjoy this win first."
