PHIL PARKES - G-D
- Phil Parkes: Possibly QPR's greatest-ever goalkeeper (competing for that honour with Ron Springett, Reggie Allen and maybe David Seaman)...Phil Parkes. Parkes turns 58: Born August 8, 1950.
- Then QPR-Manager, Les Allen signed Parkes from Walsall in the summer of 1970 for 15,000 pounds (and recouped the money by sellig then QPR-goalie, Mike Kelly to Birmingham for slightly more.) One paper at the time of his transfer characterized Parkes as "strongly tipped for England U-23 honours.)
- Parkes made his debut at home to Leicester, in August 1970. QPR lost, but Parkes was brilliant from the first game on.
- Parkes crazily played only ONE game for England - kept out by first Gordon Banks; then Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence.
- Parkes played an integral part in getting QPR out of the second Division; and almost winning the First Division Championship...
Parkes was sold to then Division-Two West Ham in February 1979,for a world record goalie fee of 550,000 pounds. (But it still wasn't enough!). Played 344 games for QPR and the 344 for West Ham! (+ 52 games for Walsall)
- Whether Parkes was QPR's Greatest-ever goalie can always be argued. (Also Reg Allen, Peter Springett, David Seaman, etc.) But he was brilliant, consistent, and almost an ever-present for QPR.

QPR Official Site - THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: SEASIDERS
Posted on: Fri 07 Aug 2009
It's almost time for the talking to stop and the serious business to begin, as the R's kick-off their Coca Cola Championship season against Blackpool on Saturday afternoon.
- Jim Magilton's side head into their opening day showdown against the Seasiders in buoyant mood, following a productive pre-season campaign, which culminated in a comfortable 3-0 victory against Southampton last weekend.
- Goals from Kaspars Gorkss, Angelo Balanta and Adel Taarabt sealed the win, to set things up nicely for the visit of Ian Holloway's new charges to W12.
- Team News
- Magilton has a strong pool of players to pick from for his maiden competitive outing as Rangers boss.
- With the exception of Argentinean midfielder Alejandro Faurlin (thigh) and Lee Cook (knee), the R's gaffer has a fully fit squad to select from, including Matt Connolly, Akos Buzsaky and Mikele Leigertwood, who all returned to full training earlier this week.
- Blackpool, buoyed by a midweek triumph over a strong Everton outfit in their final pre-season outing, could hand debuts to summer signings Charlie Adam and Jason Euell.
- The duo are both likely to start for Holloway's side, but the Seasiders will be without defender Danny Coid, who sustained a hairline fracture to his tibia in pre-season, and is set to be sidelined for around three months.
Former Rangers striker Danny Nardiello could also feature for the Tangerines.
Star Man
Paul Rachubka - Goalkeeper
- A winner of the Player of the Year award last season, Seasiders number one Paul Rachubka is set to embark on his third full season in a Blackpool jersey.
- The American-born 28 year-old, who started his career at Manchester United and made his debut for the Club in the Maracana, is now playing his most consistent football at Bloomfield Road and agreed a new contract at the end of last season.
Previous encounter
- Blackpool 0, QPR 3 (Helguson (2), Ephraim) - January 27th 2009
Heidar Helguson bagged a brace and Hogan Ephraim notched a late third, as Rangers chalked up a vital victory at a rain-soaked Bloomfield Road.
The Icelandic international bagged a goal in each half, the second from the penalty spot, before Ephraim capped a vintage away day with a third in added time.
If anything, the final scoreline flattered the hosts, who played second fiddle to the R's throughout the 90 minutes.
