London Evening Standard/Simon Johnson - Chelsea treading carefully in cup
- Chelsea are planning to field several reserves in this season's Carling Cup as they try to cope with FIFA's transfer ban.
- The club are appealing the decision to stop them buying players until 2011 after being found guilty of inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens. Chelsea have played their strongest team in the competition in the past but are determined to fast-track some younger talent during the ban.
- They face QPR at home in the Third Round on 23 September and first team coach Ray Wilkins said: "The Carling Cup is big for us, but I think this year, for one of the first times, we will use some of the younger players in the club. Hopefully we will get a full house against QPR and if some of the young players can force their way in, then all well and good" Standard-
- Congratulations to Ex-QPR striker, Ian Muir, who got the winner for Tranmere as they won the Screwfix Masters Trophy on Sunday! In the first round, QPR lost 5-2 to Middlesbrough
- Evening Standard - Guest Blog/ Clive Whittingham - Jim Magilton's risky strategy could prove turning point for QPR
- The international break has given everybody at QPR a chance to take stock of what is, on the face of it, a pretty poor start to the season. The 1-0 win at Scunthorpe last weekend was our first in the league this season and we have been left to lament poor finishing against Blackpool, Plymouth and Bristol City where we won two points when it could quite easily have been nine. Nottingham Forest should have won in the last league game at Loftus Road and we were very close to being beaten by Accrington in the League Cup.
- In many ways it is a shame we weren’t – it might have woken one or two people in W12 up to our shortcomings and having drawn Chelsea in round three you have to feel sorry for Stanley whose club threatening £300k tax bill could have been paid in one fell swoop with that draw had they won at Loftus Road as their performance deserved.
- Rangers have added Ben Watson, a good player but another midfielder to go with our 13 others, and Arsenal striker Jay Simpson to try to finish off the attractive approach work. Looking at the squad now it is right up there with the very best in the league, though still short in attack, and we should really be pushing for the top six.
- Manager Jim Magilton has taken the always risky strategy of criticising the players publicly following the Accrington game so when we return from this break the season can go one of two ways. Either the players decide they don’t very much care for Magilton’s methods and stop playing for him altogether in which case further farce awaits, or this group really gets it together and puts the rounds of the kitchen through the Championship as we have threatened to do on and off in games so far. There really is no better way to begin than consecutive home games with mediocre Peterborough and Palace sides next week. Four points is a bare minimum requirement.

Daily Mail Includes David Bardsley in Its Worst 50 England Internationals!
- The List: Sportsmail's worst ever England international footballers Nos 50-41 "...44. David Bardsley (2 caps - 1992 - 1993)Defender was capped twice by then England boss Graham Taylor in 1992 but that was thought to be down to the fact that he used to manage him at Watford. Bardsley was playing at QPR at the time but never appeared for England again." Daily Mail
Nottingham Forest Manager, Billy Davies on Need for Patience With Managers
"....Jim Magilton, the QPR boss, found himself on the receiving end of abuse from the stands following Forest's 1-1 draw at Loftus Road only a few games into the season.
- "What is going on in football is a disgrace," said Davies.
"It was a disgrace that Jim Magilton was jeered off the pitch in his second home game of the season as a new manager at QPR.
"What do these people expect?
- "What is going on in the game at the moment – are we going to be changing managers after three weeks?
- "Is the way forward for managers to be given one-month contracts?
"Is that what fans are looking for? Or are we going to give managers the time and support they need and see what happens?
"The greatest example I can give you of what patience achieves is simple. What position would Manchester United be in now if they had sacked Alex Ferguson after two or three years?
"They were close to doing so.
- "Where would they be? There is no better example of a club sticking by their manager and seeing what rewards they get.
"They could easily have made a change, but they stuck with him and how many trophies and titles has he given them now?
- "I shake my head at what happened to Magilton, I shake my head at the state of the football world at the minute." Nottingham Evening Post

QPR Fan Petition to bring back to QPR, Former Scout, Mel Johnson
- Background (Preamble):
- Mel Johnson achieved great success at Queens Park Rangers as Chief Scout. He recommended excellent players to Ian Holloway that not only delivered on the field, but later produced revenue that helped to keep the club afloat as the club fought the possibility of extinction.
- Mel was responsible for recommending current captain Martin Rowlands, who has been a superb servant to the club, as well as the likes of Danny Shittu and Lee Cook - two massive favourites among the fans. He also helped to bring in players such as Stephen Kelly and Lee Camp at crucial times in the club's climb back to the Championship.
- Mel had a great time at QPR and only left because Spurs recognised his capabalities and made him an offer he could not turn down. Spurs have now released him, essentially throwing away four-and-a-half years of worldwide scouting experience he has gained while working there. That is an astonishing bank of knowledge that QPR could now tap into.
- Indeed, Mel's effect is being felt at Loftus Road even now - he spotted Adel Taraabt while playing Under 17 football and recommended him to Spurs. He describes Adel as a classic QPR player - a footballer in the Marsh/Bowles tradition who QPR fans really appreciate.
- We know that Mel has done brilliantly for us in the past and he is now available with a wealth of knowledge and experience that could really help QPR's quest for Premier League football. He won't be on the market long. Let's get him now before someone else steps in. Petition Preamble
