Leigertwood on QPR Managerial Turnover - Mirror/Oliver Pickup - QPR 1-1 Sheffield United match report: The Daily Mirror verdict

Mikele Leigertwood admits he has seen so many managers come and go in his two years at Queens Park Rangers that he finds it easier to call them ‘gaffer’ rather than remember their proper name.

Back in August 2007 John Gregory brought the midfielder from Sheffield United - who he scored against in Saturday’s draw - before Flavio Briatore became co-owner and chairman.

Since the Italian multi-millionaire has been at the helm, no fewer than nine men have been in charge, with the latest being former Portsmouth manager Paul Hart following Jim Magilton’s dismissal after a changing room bust-up.

“You do feel as though it’s ‘here we go again’,” revealed the 27-year-old, who was handed the skipper’s armband by Hart, sacked by Pompey last month.

“But you have to go again. You can’t do anything but go again. So we have just got to try and work together as a group of players and try to stick together.

“We stick to [calling the managers] gaffer or sir! But Paul is fresh out the Premier League, so obviously he's got the experience. And having worked under a pressure situation, as he did at Portsmouth, we're happy to have him in.”

Leigertwood got Hart’s reign off to the best possible start after only two minutes at Loftus Road on Saturday when Ben Watson’s corner fell to him and his deflected shot found the back of the net from just inside the area.

It was the first goal in Kevin Blackwell’s Blades had conceded in more than 280 minutes, but they hit back only six minutes later through striker Richard Cresswell’s close-range finish.

United left-back Toni Kallio made the most of Watson’s ill-judged pass-back and pulled back for Cresswell who turned in his second goal of the season.

After that the chances were few and far between for both sides in freezing conditions, and the two goalkeepers must have hoped for more on-target shots if only to warm them up.

Just before the interval, Blades’ Stephen Quinn found Jamie Ward, who should have done better than his slice wide. The next meaningful effort came seven minutes before the end when Cresswell headed over.

QPR’s second shot on target came a minute later when Rowan Vine’s strike was straight at Mark Bunn. And in injury time Watson’s header only found the crossbar.

A draw was a fair result to a dismal game, and leaves United in seventh on 32 points, two off the play-off places.

With two fewer points QPR sit tenth, but Leigertwood is positive Hart can guide them to the Premier League.

“We know that we are good enough to go and get in the play-offs or get promoted,” he said. “But we have got to show that level of commitment and work hard and actually do it. There's no point talking about it.

“Paul has not really had time to get his ideas across and we're obviously disappointed we didn't get the win. But there's definitely a foundation to build on.”

The 56-year-old Hart, contracted until the end of the season, added: “No targets have been set for me. I like winning and we ought to be able to get into the play-off positions, if we play well enough.

“It didn’t take me long to decide to take the job. There is an opportunity in the long-term to develop a football club from top to bottom and I’m happy to be here.” Mirror

Daily Mail - ... Quote of the weekend 2
- Mikele Leigertwood has been at QPR for only two years, but has played under nine managers. He was signed by John Gregory, has seen Luigi de Canio, Iain Dowie, Paulo Sousa and Jim Magilton come and go as well as Mick Harford (now No 2 at QPR), Gareth Ainsworth (twice) and Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham. After Paul Hart’s first game in charge, he joked: ‘We stick to “Gaffer” or “Sir”, whatever, with the managers now.’
