SHEFFIELD UNITED OFFICIAL SITE - Kenny joins QPR in £750,000 deal
United have reluctantly agreed to a bid for goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.
The Republic of Ireland international is leaving following eight years with the Blades after Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers lodged a bid for £750,000 for Kenny - invoking a clause within his contract allowing him to talk to the London club now managed by Neil Warnock.
United have already moved to cover the departure and are confident of quickly strengthening with a replacement number one.
Kenny returned to action only at the end of last season after serving a nine month ban imposed following a positive drugs test during the 2009 play off semi-final. United stood by their player and extended his contract not long after the suspension was upheld by the Football Association.
Since receiving the approach United officials have spoken at length with Kenny and his representatives - pointing out how the club has stood by the player during his lengthy suspension.
"We are very disappointed and frustrated by what has happened," said Chief Executive Trevor Birch. "Paddy was offered a new three year enhanced contract which he has chosen to reject.
"Paddy has now had discussions with QPR and agreed terms. As a result we have been left with no alternative but to let him go."
Kenny joined the Blades in 2002 - originally on loan - from Bury. The deal became permanent and he went onto make 278 appearances for United and during that time played seven times for the Republic of Ireland.
United's attentions now switch to bringing in a new goalkeeper. Mr Birch added: "We now have to move on and swiftly find a replacement. That process is well under way to bring in the right player in good time for pre-season. I am very confident of finding that player." Sheffield United
QPR Official Site - EXCLUSIVE: PADDY POWERS IN
Posted on: Mon 07 Jun 2010
Queens Park Rangers Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of highly-rated goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.
The 32 year-old custodian - who has seven Republic of Ireland caps to his name - has penned a three year-deal in W12, after Rangers agreed an undisclosed fee with Sheffield United for his services.
Kenny becomes Neil Warnock's third summer signing and the R's boss is pleased to be linking up, once again, with the classy shot-stopper.
"Paddy's a very good goalkeeper," Warnock told www.qpr.co.uk.
"I rate him very, very highly and genuinely believe he's one of the best around at this level.
"Yes, he's made mistakes in his life in the past, but he's a straight-forward guy and I think this is the right time for him and his family to leave Sheffield and focus on the next chapter of his career.
"I know he'll relish the challenge of helping us achieve our goals."
Kenny admits the decision to leave Bramall Lane was a tough one, but is excited about the prospect of working with Warnock, whom he clearly rates highly as a Manager.
"It was a difficult decision to leave, but with the year I've had I felt it was the right time to move on," he told www.qpr.co.uk.
"The chance to come to a Club like Queens Park Rangers and to link up again with Neil Warnock was too good an opportunity to turn down.
"Neil is a massive character. It's the third time now that I'll be working with him and I'm very excited about the challenge ahead."
Kenny will compete with Radek Cerny for the R's number one jersey and the Halifax-born stopper is relishing the competition, adding: "You need to be pushed as goalkeepers.
"When you play or you train, you need to do so at your maximum and that brings out the best in each and every individual." QPR

MIRROR - QPR want Pompey striker
QPR boss Neil Warnock is trying to sign striker Tommy Smith from Portsmouth in a £500,000 deal.
Warnock has asked Pompey to name a price for the former Watford hit man.
Smith is prepared to move if Portsmouth will let him. He was valued at £1m in a recent list of available players but could go for much less. Mirror
