QPR Official Site NW: A TOUGH WEEK
-Neil Warnock was once again pleased with the work-out his team received after their final match in the south-west this evening.
Rangers recorded a 3-1 win at Torquay United with goals from Heidar Helguson, Josh Parker and Hogan Ephraim, and Warnock told www.qpr.co.uk: "This was a good work-out for us.
"The pitch was superb, and Torquay have done well pre-season so I knew this match would give us a few problems - it was just what we needed."
The hosts beat Plymouth Argyle 3-1 in mid-week, so certainly provided an interesting challenge for the R's, but Warnock added: "I thought we kept the ball well and we could have scored a few more goals.
"Then again, we gave a silly one away so it was a good learning curve.
"We're creating chance after chance, and you've got to be there to miss them. Helguson's opening goal was superb, and he could have had another one after that. "
After a tough week in Cornwall, the R's faced a physical battle at Plainmoor, and Warnock admitted: "We've worked hard this week - we've trained every day, as well as having the games, so there were one or two tired legs tonight."
Leon Clarke - who set-up the first goal with a fine cross - was substituted after 15 minutes of action, and Warnock explained: "Leon just felt his thigh.
"We're not going to risk anything at this stage. Now we're looking forward to Italy next week." QPR Official Site

QPR made it three wins out of the three in the south-west with a 3-1 victory over Torquay United coming on the back of triumphs over Tavistock and Bodmin Town.
Heider Helguson opened the scoring on nine minutes with a fine diving header before the hosts levelled on the hour through Chris Robertson.
Once again, Rangers finished strongly, however, and grabbed two goals in the final 18 minutes through Josh Parker and Hogan Ephraim.
It was a highly-competitive and thoroughly entertaining affair, which will have no doubt improved QPR's fitness levels ahead of next week's trip to Italy.
QPR, wearing their impressive all-new away strip, lined up with Radek Cerny in goal, while Matt Connolly was in his preferred position at the centre of defence alongside Kaspars Gorkss.
Clint Hill was on the left, with Mikele Leigertwood at right back.
Alejandro Faurlin and Shaun Derry continued their partnership in the centre of midfield, with Akos Buzaky just in front.
Meanwhile, Leon Clarke started the match wide on the left, with Jamie Mackie wide right and Heider Helguson in attack.
It was Buzskay who had the first chance of note after five minutes, but his effort from the edge of the area flew over the bar, to the delight of the home supporters, who seemed to enjoy giving former local boys Buzsaky and Mackie plenty of stick.
However, it was the visiting fans who were celebrating moments later when Clarke got away down the left side and produced a pin-point delivery for Helguson, whose diving header from 12 yards flew into the back of the net.
It was a lovely, flowing mood which produced Helguson's first goal of the pre-season campaign, and had the QPR supporters behind Cerny's goal at the other end of the pitch in full voice.
After 15 minutes, Clarke was withdrawn from the action, with Hogan Ephraim coming on as his replacement. The injury certainly didn't look a serious one, and it was no doubt a precautionary measure on the part of the management team.
Having beaten Plymouth 3-1 at Plainmoor on Tuesday, Torquay certainly offered QPR their stiffest test of the week, but Warnock's side once again enjoyed plenty of possession.
And in the 22nd minute, more good football opened up Torquay down the right, where the overlapping Leigertwood got to the byline before picking out Helguson with a whipped delivery to the back post, but on this occasion the R's front man headed inches wide from close range.
It was very-much one-way traffic in this fixture, and Helguson again went close to adding to his tally after a lovely through-ball by Buzsaky, but Torquay keeper Scott Bevan was able to deny him.
Ten minutes before the end of the half, good work between Mackie and Buzsaky through the middle created room for Ephraim on the right, but his shot from 18 yards was off target.
Despite the miss, it was another fine illustration of how well the team were moving the ball about, looking to create openings.
At the other end of the pitch, Hill blocked Danny Stevens' shot from range as the hosts looked to get themselves back on level terms.
Moments later, Hill was again alive to the danger as Billy Kee tried to worm his way through the backline, but a typically tough challenge from the R's left back soon put an end to that.
Torquay finished the half strongly, and Chris Zebroski drew a fine save from Cerny, who tipped a powerful 18-yard drive over the bar in the final action of a competitive opening 45 minutes.
Interestingly, Warnock didn't make any changes at the break, going against the numerous substitutions he made during the interval at Tavistock and Bodmin.
Buzsaky, Ephraim and Mackie consistently linked up well throughout the game, and you get a feeling the trio will form a major part of Warnock's plans this season.
Five minutes into the second half Buzsaky's corner from the right was flicked on at the near post by Ephraim but nobody could get the crucial touch as the ball flew across the six yard box to safety.
Buzsaky was once again the architect moments later, freeing the on-rushing Derry into the penalty box, and his smart low cross from the left forced an excellent last-ditch clearance by Torquay's Elliot Benyon, with Ephraim ready to pounce.
But Rangers weren't having it all their own way, and in the 55th minute they had Cerny to thank for protecting their lead.
Chris Robertson's corner from the right was powerfully met by Lathaniel Rowe-Turner, but Cerny saved from close range, and Rowe-Turner could only blast the rebound over the bar.
But on the hour the hosts drew level as the R's backline was finally breached. Rowe-Turner delivered a teasing cross from the right and Robertson headed home, with Cerny almost producing an incredible save but unable to get a strong enough hand to the close range effort.
Before the re-start, Warnock made three changes with Peter Ramage, Damion Stewart and Josh Parker replacing summer signings Mackie, Derry and Hill.
Ramage took up the right-back berth with Leigertwood replacing Derry alongside Faurlin in the holding role. Meanwhile, Parker played wide on the right with Ephraim switching to the left.
The goal seemed to spark QPR into life, and Buzsaky warmed the palms of goalkeeper Bevan with a free-kick from distance. But Torquay, buoyed by their win over Argyle in mid-week, were keen for another scalp, which made for a hugely entertaining pre-season fixture.
With 20 minutes remaining, Gorkss saw his free header from a Buzsaky corner go wide of the post while Parker cut in from the left and fired narrowly over.
But on 72 minutes the lively Parker netted for the third consecutive match. Cerny's free kick from just inside the QPR half was flicked into the path of the R's youth product and he cleverly created room for himself before firing an unstoppable drive into the roof of the Torquay net.
Parker's long throw was very-much in evidence at Bodmin on Wednesday night, but there is far more to his game, as this strike highlighted.
But rather than settle for one strike on the night, Parker went in search of another as he again cut in from the left before unleashing a stunning right-footed drive which was fantastically saved by Bevan.
Moments later, Parker won a throw on the left. As he prepared to take it, Warnock came out of the visiting dug-out, screaming: "Gorkss, get in the box!" The Latvian obliged, and Parker's long throw was flicked on at the near post but the Torquay rearguard were able to hack to safety.
Torquay thought they had levelled wit five minutes remaining but Benyon's close range strike was ruled out by referee Andy Bennett for a foul.
To rub salt into the hosts' wound, Rangers went straight down the other end and made it 3-1. Ephraim grabbed his fifth goal in three matches with some lovely trickery down the right flank before firing a low drive into the far bottom corner, to the delight of the R's faithful behind the goal.
Helguson went close to making it four late on but his header was cleared off the line as a thoroughly enjoyable fixture wound to a close in front of a hugely appreciate 1,429 supporters.

United went down 3-1 to QPR in a competitive and entertaining contest at Plainmoor on Friday evening. Rangers scored an early goal through Heidar Helguson after good work down the left by Clarke and his cross was headed home by Helguson in the 10th minute.
Rangers had the better of the early exchanges and could have doubled their lead when Helguson missed an open goal when he should have headed home another fine right wing cross. Jamie Mackie tested Scott Bevan with a low shot from 25 yards but it was far too close to the Gull's 'keeper. Rangers were clearly a good step up from anything else that United had faced so far this summer and were closing United down and forcing the odd error from the Gulls in areas that they couldn't afford to relinquish possession.
Helguson forced another save from Bevan as Rangers broke quickly again but at the other end United were forcing more of the play and Billy Kee showed strength and awareness to supply a shooting chance for Danny Stevens but his shot was blocked for a corner.
The best move of the first half came from United when Lee Mansell and Nicky Wroe started a five man build-up across the pitch which finished with Chris Zebroski forcing Cerny into a fine one-handed save to tip over for a corner.
United upped the temp themselves in the second half and gave an excellent account of themselves although Helguson should have scored again when another good chance went begging. Zebroski forced a save with a header from a Nicholson corner and had a follow-up shot blocked but United didn't have to wait long to draw level; Chris Zebroski again did well this time down the right and a perfect cross eluded sub Martin Gritton but not Chris Robertson who belted a header past Cerny although he got a hand to the ball.
United had their best period of the match now although Charnock had to be sharp to tackle Helguson when clean through on goal. The introduction of Josh Parker by Neil Warnock proved the difference on the night as he scored Ranger's second with a fine left foot belter that gave Bevan no chance. United had what looked like a good goal chalked off in the closing stages but Rangers added to the misery by going up the other end and Ephraim finished things off with a right foot strike low into the far corner.
A great test for the Gulls against a very good side and there were plenty of positives for Bucks to take out of the ninety minutes. Torquay Official Site

Spirited Torquay United find QPR tough opposition
JUST AS THEY HAD done against Plymouth Argyle in midweek, Torquay United raised their game with a spirited second-half performance against Queen's Park Rangers at Plainmoor last night.
But against former United boss Neil Warnock's QPR, the Gulls found Championship opposition tougher to crack than League One Argyle had been in the pre-season build-up.
Defender Chris Robertson's 61st minute header wiped out Heidar Helguson's early goal for Rangers.
Even though substitute Josh Parker, who had trained with Torquay briefly last season, regained the lead for QPR, United were unlucky to have an Elliot Benyon 'equaliser' disallowed.
And the Gulls' second-half show, lifted by the introduction of prospective loan signing Martin Gritton, deserved more than the 3-1 scoreline clinched by Hogan Ephraim a couple of minutes from time.
There was plenty of encouragement for United in this show, heading into Monday's trip to Tiverton Town and, even more, the visit of Bristol City to Plainmoor on Wednesday.
A few days of rain had done wonders for the pitch, which drew praise from Warnock before kick-off.
Buckle experimented again, with Lee Mansell reverted to right-back, Chris Robertson in the middle with Kieran Charnock and Kevin Nicholson at left-back.
Chris Zebroski started on the right wing, Danny Stevens on the left and Nicky Wroe with Eunan O'Kane in midfield.
Benyon and Kee were paired up front.
Rangers started with a 4-3-3 formation, with Mackie always ready to support strikers Helguson and Leon Clarke up front.
Helguson may not be a giant, but his strength and timing in the air was soon apparent.
After ten minutes of sparring, the visitors took the lead.
Helguson set up Clarke with a volleyed pass to the left, Clarke used the yard or two he had on Mansell to curl in an inviting cross and Helguson dived in front of Charnock to head home from ten yards…1-0 to QPR.
They immediately had to make a change, for Clarke must have done something to himself moments earlier, and he was replaced by Hogan Ephraim.
Warnock kept his formation, Mackie switching to the left with Ephrain on the right of his front-three.
In the 22nd minute Rangers should have extended their lead.
Right-back Mikele Leigertwood delivered a driven cross from the right and Helguson glanced a header wide at the far post when he looked certain to score.
It was much the same pattern as the game against Plymouth on Tuesday night.
Then, Argyle had dominated the early stages before United took the game away from them.
The Gulls looked to have a much harder task on their hands against classier opposition this time.
Helguson laid a nice pass off for Mackie to test Scott Bevan with a low shot in the 25th minute.
If Helguson was the 'fulcrum' of Rangers' attacks up front, the man running the show in midfield was Faurlin.
Always in space and buying extra time with a sure first touch, his passing was accurate and economical.
In the 29th minute O'Kane made a wrong call in midfield, when he tried to beat a man deep in his own half and lost possession.
Moments later Bevan, off his line, had to pull out a good save from Helguson to keep United from going 2-0 down.
Ephraim fired well over the bar when he was well placed in the 37th minute.
With five minutes to half-time United still hadn't tested Rangers goalie Radek Cerny, nor had they created a chance.
It was a case of hanging in there and hoping for a break.
Stevens, who had moved into midfield to try and put Faurlin under some pressure, did force a corner in the 42nd minute.
But United could not make it count.
At last, in the 44th minute, United did cause some concern in the Rangers defence.
Kee and Stevens combined to slip Zebroski away on the left, and Cerny had to pull out a smart to tip Zebroski's shot over the angle of post and bar.
Warnock was not happy with the way Leigertwood and Cerny handled that situation and, as the players left the field at the interval, the Rangers' boss made his point emphatically to his two defenders.
Buckle sent on Gritton for Kee at half-time, and the Gulls promptly forced a couple of corners in quick succession, followed by a dangerous long throw from Nicholson.
That was better from United, but in the 50th minute an inswinging corner by Akos Buzsaky from Rangers' left rang alarm bells, whipping across the crowded Babbacome End goalmouth without getting a touch off anybody.
Zebroski and Stevens had resumed their roles at the end of the first half – Zebroski wide on the left and Stevens, often tucked in, on the right.
There was more urgency to United's play in the second half.
Gritton brought a presence to the attack.
In the 57th minute, from a Nicholson corner on the right, Zebroski had a goalbound header parried by Cerny.
The rebound fell for Zebroski, but his second effort deflected off Clint Hill and over the bar.
United's higher gear was rewarded in the 61st minute.
While QPR prepared to make a triple substitution, United took a half-cleared corner by Nicholson from the left.
The ball deflected off a Rangers defender to the opposite side of the pitch.
Mansell took it quickly, Zebroski muscled his way through two defenders, crossed from the byline and Robertson powered a close-range header in off the outstretched fingertips of Cerny into the near-post top corner…1-1.
Warnock was not best pleased at the way his team had conceded the equaliser, and he promptly went ahead with his planned changes.
Peter Ramage replaced Hill at full-back, while Damion Stewart and Josh Parker took over from Derry and Mackie.
Lovely play between O'Kane and Stevens set up Zebroski to beat Ramage and cross from the left, but United couldn't quite finish the attack.
In the 69th minute Buckle made his second change, Damon Lathrope for Stevens in midfield.
O'Kane switched to the right wing.
United's goal stung QPR into renewed action, and they forced the Gulls back for a spell.
Helguson headed narrowly wide, before Parker regained the lead for Rangers in the 73rd minute.
Parker held off Mansell's challenge on the right side of United's penalty area to rip an unstoppable left-foot drive into the roof of the net from 12 yards…1-2.
Robertson looped a header high and wide after Zebroski again beat Ramage comfortably and crossed.
Rangers had reasserted their authority in a way that Plymouth had not in midweek, so Buckle made another change, sending on young left winger Saul Halpin for O'Kane in the 78th minute.
Zebroski found himself back on the right.
Again, United finished strongly, forcing a series of corners at the Ellacombe End.
From one of them, Nicholson got a second bite at the ball, crossed from the left and Halpin was inches away from scoring with a diving header.
Halpin had another good chance five minutes from time.
QPR could not deal with a determined piece of play by Benyon on the right, the ball fell for Halpin just inside the area, but he slammed a half-volley well over.
In the 88th minute United were most unlucky to have an equaliser disallowed.
Robertson's downward header on a Nicholson free-kick was touched into the roof of the net by Benyon, but referee Andrew Bennett ruled that Robertson had fouled his man winning the header.
Just a minute QPR rubbed salt into that wound, breaking away to make it 3-1 through Ephraim's angled shot from the right, which took a deflection on its way inside the far post.
The better team had undoubtedly won, no surprise in that, but the scoreline did United's second-half effort little justice. This is South Devon -
Upcoming: QPR vs Saltash
Plymouth Herald - Saltash United ready to test themselves against a strong QPR side
- SALTASH United have been promised a strong QPR line-up for Monday's pre-season friendly at Kimberley Stadium.
Current Rangers manager and former Plymouth Argyle supremo Neil Warnock has assured Ashes boss Kevin Hendy that, although he is away in Italy on a training exercise with a number of the first-team squad, he will still be sending a strong line-up to play the fixture under the guidance of newly-appointed coach Ronnie Jepson.
The Ashes are hoping for a large crowd at Kimberley where the admission will be £7 for adults and £4 for OAP's, students and teenagers.
Children will be admitted free of charge if accompanied by an adult.
The match against QPR is the first of a series of attractive friendlies at Kimberley Stadium with Southern League Premier outfit Truro City arriving on Saturday, July 31 (3pm) followed by a strong Plymouth Argyle side on Monday, August 2 (7.30pm).
Saltash offcials said they were grateful to National Company Morgan Sindall who have sponsored both the QPR and Argyle friendlies.
Hendy, meanwhile, has been delighted with his pre-season training.
He said: "I believe I have the strongest squad available in the five years I have been at Saltash."
Warnock, who has a home on the outskirts of Plymouth, has already seen his squad given a decent workout at Tavistock.
His players, including former Argyle stars Jamie Mackie and Hungarian Akos Buszaky, defeated a new-look Tavistock side 8-0.
Buszaky and Mackie, who joined the west London club at the end of last season, were among the Rangers' scorers.
