SCUNTHORPE OFFICIAL SITE - NIGEL UP FOR QPR CHALLENGE

Iron manager Nigel Adkins says his team are going to high-flying Queens Park Rangers with intentions of picking up all three points.

Neil Warnock's Hoops have started the season superbly - beating Barnsley 4-0 at home and Sheffield United 3-0 away - and head into the match as clear favourites.

Nevertheless, Adkins says Scunthorpe aren't entertaining any thoughts of going to Loftus Road aiming for just a point and will approach the game just like they did at Reading, another set of promotion favourites, a fortnight ago.

"QPR are a top team," said the boss, speaking on The Iron Player.

"They've invested very heavily, have a good side, a good manager, and will provide a tough test.

"They've got numerous players who can cause plenty of damage. Adel Taarabt plays in the hole behind the strikers and is going to be a threat.

"You can rattle through the whole team, they've got good players there.

"What we've got to do is make sure we get possession of the football and ensure we utilise it properly.

"We will go there trying to win the game, just like we did when we went to Reading.

"Like this Saturday, nobody thought we would have a chance of winning there but we managed to defeat them 2-1.

"Believe to achieve. We've got a group of players who work very hard, we've had a very good start to the campaign.

"We're clear favourites for relegation, and that's already been highlighted numerous times.

"We've started very, very well. There's belief in the camp and we go there confident that we can get something from the game. We think we can win.

"We defeated Reading and then we went and beat a very good Oldham side, who have done very well in the league - that was a good result for us too.

"At the end of the day we did very well against Norwich but didn't win the game.

"We're going down to QPR with nothing to lose and all to gain.

"They have a big, strong squad and they will be up there at the end of the season.

"I get on very well with their manager Neil Warnock and I've got time for him. I know he's not the most popular figure, but he's a winner and I have a lot of respect for him. We've always got on."

"I think they will be up there right at the end too, along with Middlesbrough."

QPR Official Site - THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: IRON

On Saturday afternoon the R's play host to a Scunthorpe side who simply cannot be under-estimated.

Nigel Adkins has consistently pushed the Iron, and last season's achievement of staying in the Championship when so-called 'experts' predicted relegation was a real credit to the Manager and his hard-working players.

The hole left by the summer departure of Gary Hooper to Celtic will be a big one to fill, but you wouldn't bet against Scunthorpe managing to do it. On top of that, fellow striker Paul Hayes also left Glanford Park to join Championship rivals Preston.

But Scunthorpe don't do looking back. They are firmly focused on the season ahead, and they began the campaign with a largely unexpected 2-1 win at the home of Reading, with Garry Thompson and Rob Jones on target.

Star Man

Jonathan FORTE - Striker

Jonathan Forte is a player who QPR boss Neil Warnock knows well, having come through the ranks at Sheffield United under him.

He made 30 appearances for the Blades under Warnock, scoring once, before moving to Glanford Park in 2007 as part of the deal that saw striker Billy Sharp move back to Bramall Lane.

Forte's time in North Lincolnshire has seem him struggle to break into the team ahead of more established players - but he has shown enough promise to earn himself a shot as a first-choice forward this season following the departures of Paul Hayes and Gary Hooper.

Playing against Warnock does seem to motivate him, as he showed last year when he acted as a lone striker in Scunthorpe's 4-0 success over Warnock's Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Forte scored after four minutes in that match, the highlight of his Iron career so far. His biggest asset is fantastic pace, and with a First-Team place his if he wants it, he needs to add goals to his CV.

He has started well, scoring against Oldham in the Carling Cup but has yet to score in the league.

The Pre-Match Talk

Alejandro Faurlin, QPR: "We cannot take them (Scunthorpe) lightly. They are a strong team and they will be aggresive so we need to be ready.

"We must win our home games, this is very important.

"It is a very good mix here now. We are in a good moment and we need to keep it this way."

Jonathan Forte, Scunthorpe: "Obviously we want to score every time we get a chance, but our defence is doing really well, so that takes a little bit of pressure off us.

"I think that will mean we'll be a lot better away from home this season. It's massive we get points on the board early on.

"If we can do that, I'm sure our confidence will grow and I think we'll get better and better."

Classic Encounter

Scunthorpe United 2, QPR 2

Coca Cola Championship - Saturday 8th December 2007

Akos Buzsaky's deadly double clinched Rangers a creditable point at Glanford Park.

The midfield maestro bagged a brace of contenders for goal of the season, on an afternoon where the R's twice threw away a lead against fellow strugglers Scunthorpe United.

Buzsaky's first half double saw Rangers into the break with a 2-1 lead, after Martin Paterson put the Iron on terms midway through the first half.

Scunny's reward for an electrifying start to the second half arrived courtesy of Jonathan Forte's 54th minute strike and although both sides went in search of a winning goal, a draw was probably a fair reflection.
