Adel Taarabt is baffling and brilliant, Neil Warnock's just brilliant - Derry
Shaun Derry tells Metro how the lure of a third spell working for colourful manager Neil Warnock was key to him joining QPR’s push for promotion - as well as waxing lyrical about playmaker Adel Taarabt.
No matter the situation, wherever the club, or how dire the circumstances, something always draws Shaun Derry back to Neil Warnock’s management.
The midfielder linked up with Warnock for the third time in his career last summer, when he followed the 62-year-old to QPR.
His reward is a Championship promotion tilt that seems set to end in top-flight football come May.
Warnock’s men lead nearest rivals Norwich by nine points and look certain to be crowned champions.
How different, then, from the scenario Derry faced when Warnock persuaded him to join Crystal Palace for a second time in 2008, eventually helping them retain Championship status on the final day of last season, with the Eagles in administration.
Derry was convinced by the merits of a new challenge, though, when Warnock wanted him at Loftus Road.
‘It was raw having escaped relegation last season,’ recalled Derry who also played for Warnock at Sheffield United.
‘Over the summer I thought “what do I do?” At Palace with the takeover you wondered if they’d still exist. No disrespect to Palace but now I feel I’m at a place with so much stability.’
Derry dispels the popular image of Warnock as a fearsome, win-at-all-costs boss, insisting his man-management is what players are drawn to.
‘Everyone makes a decision on what they see in the dug-out. We see him in a different light,’ he added.
‘He knows how to get his point across. [But] the majority of the players, even those out of the team, would speak very highly of him.’
No one will have tested Warnock’s patience this term more than playmaker Adel Taarabt, whose 15 goals and eye-catching displays won him the Championship Player of the Year Award on Sunday night.
Derry said: ‘Adel on his day is unplayable, on another you’re pulling your hair out. But there’s no denying single-handedly at times this year he’s got us back into games or won them with a piece of magic.’
For now, sewing up the title matters to Derry, who has played all but one of the club’s 38 league games so far.
He adds: ‘It would be really terrible for the players, the fans and the owners for us to be in this position and to throw it away now.’

Gorkss Captain of Latvia
- Haaretz previewing Israel vs Latvia
"...One player who has no reason to fear his spot on the roster is the captain, Gorkss, who is adept at utilizing free kicks and is an effective header, something which the Israelis found out during their last meeting against the Latvians. The 29-year-old defender signed a lucrative contract this season with Queens Park Rangers of the English Football League Championship. Yet even his presence in the middle of the Latvian defense is not enough to assuage observers..." Haaretz
