The Spoiler - Why Warnock leaving wouldn’t help QPR survive

QPR should stick with the man who got them promotion…

While fans of most are crying out for big signings and big spending this summer, QPR fans will just be hoping that Neil Warnock stays to lead them into the Premier League.

Last season, newly-promoted sides Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion both parted company with the manager that guided them to the Premier League and ultimately survived to spend a second season in the top-flight.

But their survival following the appointment of a new boss is the exception rather than the rule…

Since the dawn of the Premier League back in 1992 there have only been ten teams who, during their first season in the top-tier, parted company with the manager who won them promotion - and only three of them survived the drop.

Last season Mike Ashley made Chris Hughton the first managerial casualty of the season by replacing him with Alan Pardew in early December. It ultimately proved to be a wise move by the controversial owner as Pardew guided the Magpies to a 12th place finish.

Roberto Di Matteo was also replaced at West Bromwich Albion by Roy Hodgson who took the Baggies to 11th.

Prior to these two, only one promoted team had ever stayed up after appointing a new manager during the subsequent season. That was also West Brom, who released Gary Megson in November 2004 and replaced him with Bryan Robson. The Baggies stayed up on the last day of the season after a 2-0 win against Portsmouth.

Of the other seven teams who parted company with their managers after promotion, two of them saw managers leave of their own accord. Brian Little left Leicester for Aston Villa in 1994, while Owen Coyle went to Bolton from Burnley in January 2010. The remaining five managers were all sacked in pursuit of better results.

Getting rid of a manager early in the season doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on survival chances either.

Derby County got rid of two managers - Roy McFarland in 1996 and Billy Davies in 2007 - with at least five months of the season left and they still went straight back down to the second-tier. Meanwhile, Hodgson only went to West Brom in February last season and kept them up.

The QPR board should definitely think twice if they reckon getting rid of Warnock will improve their survival chances… The Spoiler

QPR OFFICIAL SITE: PELLICORI AND ALBERTI RETURN

Alessandro Pellicori and Matteo Alberti have today (Friday) returned to QPR following their loan spells in Italy.

Pellicori, 29, spent a season with Torino, where he made 23 appearances, scoring one goal. The Serie B side finished the campaign in eighth place.

Meanwhile, Alberti enjoyed a 12-month spell with Lega Pro Prima Divisione A side AC Lumezzane. The 22-year-old made 24 appearances as they finished in seventh spot. QPR

FLASHBACK:
PAUL WARBURTON/LONDON INFORMER - QPR dig deep for Italian hot-shot Pellicori

Jul 16 2009 London Informer

QPR will pay over the odds for Alessandro Pellicori - but only if the Italian striker proves he's worth a £1million fee during the next two games.

Reports that the 27-year-old's transfer is a done deal are wide of the mark.

But Rangers are worried that unless they pay far more than they might need to they will lose the prolific hitman to someone else.

The deal will be rushed through if Pellicori's trial with Rs turns up trumps, because his club, Avellino, are on the verge of bankruptcy and after being relegated from Serie B they need all the cash they can get.

Pellicori was last night (Wednesday) with the Rs squad on their tour of Slovenia and Croatia that ends on Sunday with the match against NK Carlovac - but an insider insisted Pellicori was just one of a number of irons in the fire.

"If Jim Magilton likes what he sees," said the source, "then a deal can be done quickly. With the state Avellino are in it could be that a future creditor would let him go far more cheaply - but there are too many ifs and maybes to all of that."

The player was loaned out to Serie B side Grosseto last season, and has done the rounds in Italy's second tier except for a single spell in the top-flight with Lecce three seasons ago.

However, the season before last he hit 18 for Avellino in a notoriously defensive league, while playing as the lone hitman for the ailing club.

An Rs insider said: "He's come to an age where he could be perfect for QPR - but that's all in the hands of the manager."

QPR Official Site - FOOTBALL FOR THE DEAF

Posted on: Fri 01 Jul 2011

QPR in the Community Trust and Deaffinity are pleased to announce a new partnership to create opportunities for deaf people to play football.

Based at the Paddington Recreation Ground in Westminster, the Club will train every Thursday evening and compete in the National Deaf League.

Deaffinity, which is a charitable organisation that supports deaf people in the UK, has previously been running football sessions in Bethnal Green before relocating to their new home in Central London.

QPR in the Community Trust focuses on creating progressive, vibrant hubs of sporting and social activities, leading to enhanced life experiences.

QPR also won the Football League award for Disability Community Club of the Year earlier this term.

Sessions have so far been popular with young people, with over 30 young deaf people regularly enjoying football and socialising with their friends.

Westminster City Council and GLL must be thanked for the continued support of football for disabled people at the Paddington Recreation site which currently has a successful PAN Disability Football Club on Thursday evenings, running from 6-7.30pm.

We would also like to thank Tower Hamlets for their previous support of this initiative.

QPR in the Community Trust continues to develop projects for disabled people to access sport and physical activity. With Clubs for young people with Down's Syndrome, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health illness, the Club is fast becoming a leading provider for its disabled community.
