Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock hints at David Beckham signing
David Beckham’s possible return to the Premier League moved a step closer on Wednesday when Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock appeared to endorse owner Tony Fernandes’s desire to sign the former England captain.
Beckham’s contract with MLS side LA Galaxy expires in November and the 36 year-old former Manchester United and Real Madrid player would be available on a free transfer when the January transfer window opens.
Fernandes, along with vice-chairman Amit Bhatia, has already funded the signings of Anton Ferdinand, Joey Barton, Armand Traoré and Shaun Wright-Phillips since taking over at Loftus Road and this week publicly acknowledged his desire to sign Beckham. He wrote on Twitter: “I think having someone like David in the club would be great. [He] was always in my thoughts. Let’s see.”
Warnock was equally effusive when the idea of signing the midfielder was put to him, insisting that he fully bought in to Fernandes’s vision of attracting top-class names to the newly-promoted club and suggesting Beckham, despite his age, still has plenty to offer.
“About three weeks ago I would not have dreamed to sign Joey Barton so I will never write anything off,” said Warnock. “The chairman Tony Fernandes has got such [an opinion] ... why accept the average when you can reach for the top? That is how he is. It came out of the blue. I think anything is possible. He is a very astute businessman.”
It is believed David Beckham is not considering his future but it seems likely he will call time on his adventure in the United States once the original terms of his contract expire at the end of the current MLS campaign in November.
Despite spending two successful spells on loan at AC Milan during his off-season breaks in the US, Beckham is not thought to be a target for the Italian club on a permanent deal. Tottenham have persistently been linked with a move for the player but it remains unclear whether he would fit in to Harry Redknapp’s plans.
Queens Park Rangers, conversely, may provide the perfect solution, allowing Beckham to return home for one final fling in the Premier League while boosting their profile on these shores and, perhaps more importantly, in Asia.
Fernandes has outlined his plans to invest slowly but sensibly in building QPR from the ground up — his early initiatives included cutting ticket prices to boost attendance and he has placed great importance on youth systems — but signing Beckham is a marketing opportunity too good to miss for a businessman with substantial contacts in Asia.
Beckham, even with his on-pitch performance dwindling, still makes around £30 million a year from the endorsements with sports firms such as adidas and lifestyle companies such as ObyO which make him such a powerful brand presence. A move back home may also help the player’s hopes of being included in a Great Britain squad for the London Olympics as one of three designated overage players." Telegraph

Paul Warburton/Fulham Chronicle - Paladini sent on QPR mission
QPR chairman Gianni Paladini has been sent on a mission to his native Italy – find permanent clubs for Matteo Alberti and Alessandro Pellicori.
The pair are out of favour with Rangers, and former agent Paladini has been dispatched to do what he can for his countrymen, while at the same time saving Rangers money on contracts that don’t run out until summer 2012.
Winger Alberti signed a four-year deal when he joined Hoops from Chievo in 2008, but has started just six league games. Last season he was loaned out to AC Lumezzane in the third tier of Italian football.
Striker Pellicori scored just once in 10 games, although he got a three-year contract from Avellino in 2009, and was on loan at Torino in the last campaign. Fulham Chronicle

SHAUN DERRY reckons there will be fireworks between his QPR skipper Adel Taarabt and Joey Barton.
Scouser Barton joined Rangers from Newcastle last month and has a reputation for telling it like it is.
The general feeling around West London is it will not be long before he clashes with mercurial Moroccan Taarabt.
And midfield general Derry vowed to keep out of the firing line.
He said: "I'm going to buy some popcorn and watch the movie unravel, because I'm sure there's going to be fireworks — like there is in any dressing room.
"A lot of people are going to make so much of this Barton and Taarabt situation, but we're hopeful it can blossom and there's an understanding there."
Warhorse Derry, 33, who signed a new deal with Rangers last month, accepts he may have to play second fiddle to Barton this term.
He said: "As soon as the season ended, the manager Neil Warnock was very honest with me.
"He told me he would be getting more players in my position.
"Joey's come in and, if it's Joey in that position, that's the game.
"I'm not going to moan about it because I love my job."
Meanwhile, QPR chairman Gianni Paladini has flown to Italy in a bid to offload flop duo Matteo Alberti and Alessandro Pellicori.
Winger Alberti, 23, has started just six games since moving to Loftus Road from Chievo in 2008 and ended last season back in Italy on loan at AC Lumezzane.
Pellicori scored one goal in 10 games for Rangers before the 30-year-old striker was farmed out on loan to Torino.

- NEIL Warnock has promised to refund any loan fee paid for Lee Cook if he gets crocked.
- The former Watford star is hoping to get some game time elsewhere when the loan window opens tomorrow having been left out of QPR's 25-man squad list submitted to the Premier League.
- Cook has been dogged by injury problems in recent years, but is back to fitness and featured for the reserves in a behind-closed-doors friendly with West Ham this afternoon.
- “We’re happy to pay back any loan fee paid for Lee Cook to a club that takes him if he breaks down during the loan period,” said boss Warnock.

QPR Reserves beat West Ham United this afternoon in a behind-closed-doors friendly fixture at the Club's Training Ground.
Lee Cook, Troy Hewitt and Bruno Perone were on target as the R's eased to victory in front of Manager Neil Warnock, who was in attendance.
As competition for places begins to heat up, today's reserve match has allowed the squad to show what they are capable of in the wake of new arrivals.
