DAILY STAR Sunday/Tony Stenson - PREM DREAM SUITS SHAUN DERRY
SHAUN DERRY wishes he could turn back the clock.
The QPR midfielder is enjoying a new lease of life which even has Loftus Road manager Neil Warnock rubbing his eyes and eating his words.
Warnock recalls he was at Crystal Palace and his chairman Simon Jordan was worried the club was heading for relegation in 2002.
“He suggested I signed Derry from Leeds,” said Warnock.
“I said I would but then sell him a few months later because I thought his legs had gone.
“Now he’s with me again and getting better, ageing well like wine.”
Derry, 33, was instrumental in getting Rangers into the Premier League, while remaining an unsung hero.
Now on the eve of facing Fulham for the first time at this level, he said: “I just wish I was 27 again. Coming into the Premier League at 33 I am just grasping it with both hands. I’m not a mug. I won’t be here for another five or six years.
“To have this chance at my age I will be trying all I can to keep the shirt and stay in the squad.
“This is the sort of opportunity which I have been dreaming about for years. All players feel the same.” Star
Fulham Chronicle/Paul Warburton - Warnock: Taarabt needs help from QPR team-mates to seal move to big club
ADEL Taarabt will need the current crop of QPR players if he wants a move to a big club – says the man who doesn’t want to sell him.
Boss Neil Warnock insists the £12million rated midfielder will stay for the time being – he’s enjoying it too much at Loftus Road – but he can see the day when the player does leave.
“Adel’s knows that if he wants a move to one of the top clubs, he’s going to need these players to give him a stage,” said Warnock.
“There was a time when he was very much the shining light here but he knows that’s not the case now, and I think he has got a lift by having these other players and has reacted to it.”
The Moroccan international was on the cusp of a switch to Paris St Germain in the summer. He has now been linked with Lazio this week, but Warnock also insists other unsung heroes are just as ready to plunder the club’s third away win at Fulham on Sunday.
“No-one mentions Anton Ferdinand here as one of our top players,” he added.
"I don’t think see anybody better than him in the country, when he plays like he can play. Luke Young is just as good and I’m glad he’s retired from international football.
“Such is the enthusiasm, it’s like chucking two coats down in the park – they want to play that much.
"You can’t say Joey Barton does it for money – he’s got enough already. And what was right-back Luke Young doing on the goal line in the last minute against Villa? I find it incredible no-one mentioned that. It’s because he wants to win.
“It takes you years to find that kind of spirit. We had that spirit here already, and the arrival of our new players has taken it on another level.” Fulham Chronicle
Daily Star - Adel Taarabt is hell but Martin Jol loves him I have a say
Fulham manager Martin Jol will give Adel Taarabt a special hug today after revealing: “He once saved me my job.”
QPR’s Moroccan midfield player, 22, was just a teenager when he played under Jol at Spurs but he came on to the pitch and scored a goal against West Ham to keep under-pressure Jol employed.
Jol moved to Hamburg after being finally sacked and his first move was to try to buy Taarabt.
“But they wanted too much money and he went to Rangers instead,” said Jol.
“I have always liked him. To me he is the most natural No.10 in football. Other players will tell you that.
“I called him the Whizzer. He has so much ability. I can also understand why Neil Warnock at QPR gets frustrated with him.
“He often had Spurs reserve team coach Clive Allen pulling out his hair. He’d get the ball and that would sometimes be the last you would see of it for a while.
“I have watched him recently and he seems to have adapted better. I was not surprised when Paris St-Germain wanted to buy him for big money. Adel is a leader.
“I’m enjoying my time back in England but I have learned teams need balance. You need the Aaron Lennons for pace, the Dimitar Berbatovs and the Danny Murphys. That’s is not so important abroad.
“I have also seen that English football is no longer a three-team league. It now goes down to five clubs, which you never get abroad.” Jol
