Paul Warburton/Fulham Chronicle - QPR plan £3.5m defender swoop

QPR will double their attempts to get a new centre back by launching a £3.5million bid for Nedum Onuoha in the January transfer window.

If the bid for the Manchester City defender falls by the wayside, Rs will go back in for Sebastian Bassong at Tottenham.

Boss Neil Warnock was quick to name Onuoha as the one City player on his fantasy wish-list following the 3-2 home defeat to the table toppers on Saturday. In reality, the manager is hoping he gets lucky second time around after an overture for the 24-year-old fell on stony ground in the summer.

“I’ve got a list of maybe four of five players in the transfer window that I would really like, and if I get them it’s going to strengthen our squad considerably,” he said.

Onuoha has played only once for City this season, and that in a Carling Cup tie back in September. He wants away from a star-packed squad for regular first-team football. But the sticking point for Hoops might be his mother suffering from Cancer at home in Manchester.

Rangers will hope they can somehow overcome this sensitive obstacle, but if not, the chase for Bassong at Spurs is the fallback.

The advantage for Hoops in landing Onuoha is that the former England U21 player can play either right or left back, with Warnock admiting he is resigned to losing two of his squad to the African Cup of Nations in January and February.

Both Adel Taarabt and Armand Traore are wanted by Morocco and Senegal respectively, and this is already weighing heavily on the manager’s mind.

He admitted the prospective loss makes new recruits a priority come January 1.

“If these two go to the cup, and it’s likely,” he added, “we need to take it into account.”

Dyer could be back for QPR by Christmas after the latest in long line of comebacks

10th November 2011
Queens Park Rangers midfielder Kieron Dyer has stepped up his comeback from a long-term ankle injury.

The 32-year-old, who has been in a protective boot since August, has been given the all clear to resume running and could be back for the busy festive period.

Serial sicknote: Dyer

The former England international joined QPR in the summer hoping to make a new start after years of medical problems, but his injury jinx struck again just three minutes into the season.

Dyer moved to Loftus Road from West Ham on a free transfer in July, signing a one-year contract.

He made just 30 appearances in the previous four years due to a litany of injuries.

Fulham Chronicle - Feature: QPR aiming to drive gypsy & traveller discrimination out of the game

By Rupert Basham

RACISM in sport has been dominating the headlines in recent weeks, particularly in football.

But a type of discrimination described as 'the last socially acceptable form of racism' rarely makes the top of the news agenda - that against gypsies and travellers.

A scheme at Queens Park Rangers Football Club aims to promote players from gypsy, Roma and traveller (GRT) communities, helping them reach the top of their game, as well as driving this kind of racism out of the stands. Emma Heseltine learns more.

NOW they are flying high in the top flight of English football, it is hard to imagine there are many things QPR would want to change.

But in their quest to improve diversity and support the community, the club is blazing a trail to kick racism out of football, and in particular that against GRT communities.

They run regular coaching sessions for youngsters and adults from those communities, working closely with Ealing's Gypsy Roma and Traveller Achievement Service. But they offer more than that, preparing those taking part for coaching badges, and providing them with the tools to be able to integrate fully with the fixed community.

Gareth Dixon, inclusion and diversity officer at the club, said: "Everybody knows about the campaigns to get racism out of football, and they're great campaigns doing a lot of good work. "But the terraces are still full of people who use certain derogatory words about travellers because they are ignorant. It is the last socially acceptable form of racism and that needs to change.

"Football is a great tool, and it is not really a sport that has much of a GRT presence. The only reasonably high profile footballer from a GRT background is Freddy Eastwood (a striker at Coventry City).

"He's a great player, but one man can't change things on his own. "There need to be attitude changes on both sides. Football is not really a sport most GRT families consider getting their kids into, but on the other side, there can be prejudice against those who do.

"We are hoping that we can inspire other clubs all around the country to do something similar to what we are doing here, and help kick all kinds of racism out of football."

The scheme was first thought up back in 2006, but has been in its current form since 2009. And earlier this year, Rangers invited a number of other league clubs, including Millwall and Charlton to see the work they are doing.

Gareth continued: "There is a lot of interest in what we are doing, and we had Millwall and Charlton come along for a special event to showcase the project. "There's been interest from a couple of Premier League clubs as well but it hasn't gone any further than that at this stage.

"Ideally we want other clubs across London, all around the country and of course the FA itself to get involved with their own projects similar to this one.

"There's no reason why it shouldn't spread and be taken up by all sorts of clubs. "I got involved in this because I'm passionate about equality and I think we need to drive out all forms of prejudice, racial or otherwise, out of sport and out of our society.

"There is no place for it, but it will take a long time to re-educate people about the GRT community. "Hopefully we can encourage the kids of today to get into football, so that they can get their kids into it, leading to a greater traveller involvement in the game, and greater awareness.

"That's the best way to try and tackle the ignorance - on both sides - about GRT communities and football."

The project, called 'Moving the Goalposts' has already produced five-a-side teams which play in West London leagues.

And the future is bright, with the prospects for participants and the interest from other clubs increasing. Now Rangers are hoping they can continue to break down barriers through their work in the community.
