BBC says Neil Warnock's 'fairies' comment was unacceptableBBC bosses have ruled a comment by QPR manager Neil Warnock during a Match Of The Day interview that his team played like “fairies” was unacceptable.
The club chief made the remark during an interview following a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City in April.
It led to a viewer claiming the comment was “a homophobic stereotype” and should not have been screened.
The BBC’s editorial complaints unit agreed the remark was unwelcome but said it would not take any further action because programme-makers had already “expressed regret”.
Warnock made the comment during the April 23 edition of Match Of The Day Live, saying: “We defended like fairies in the first half but the first two goals could have come straight out of the Premier League.”
In its ruling, the complaints unit (ECU) said: “The remark was unacceptable, and it was a matter of regret that it had gone unnoticed by the programme-makers, and therefore without comment or apology, at the time.
“However, the programme-makers had already acknowledged the unacceptability of the remark and expressed regret that it had not been dealt with appropriately.”
It added: “In the view of the ECU, this was sufficient to resolve the matter.”
A BBC spokeswoman said: “This was a live interview of which we had no editorial control.
“The BBC acknowledge the unacceptability of the remark and apologise that it had not been dealt with appropriately on air at the time.” Walesonline
Fulham Chronicle/Jacob Murtagh - QPR defender sidelined until December
FITZ Hall faces up to six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury in Sunday's defeat at Spurs.
The QPR defender lasted just nine minutes before limping out of the action at White Hart Lane as Rangers went down 3-1.
Hall has been plagued by a hamstring problem during the past year, spending a lengthly spell on the treatment table last season.
The former Wigan and Crystal Palace centre-back faces at least four weeks out, and is another blow for the 30-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Akos Buzsaky has moved to distance himself from quotes attributed to him that suggested he was set to go under the knife to cure a troublesome knee problem.
He said: "No one's contacted me from the newspaper. I was in the squad for every game and it demonstrates that my operated knee doesn't affect me in matches anymore.
"But this week my Achilles tendon has inflamed a bit, so I'll receive an injection in it so I won't be in the squad to play against Manchester City on Saturday."

Warnock keeps tabs on Defoe's situation at Spurs with £8m January bid touted

QPR are monitoring Jermain Defoe’s position at Tottenham.
Manager Neil Warnock is short of a striker who can find the goals to keep his team in the top flight and has earmarked the England forward for a January transfer bid of around £8million.
Warnock believes the 29-year-old has one big move in him and is hoping he can persuade Defoe that his future lies at Loftus Road.
Defoe has been pushed out of the picture with Emanuel Adebayor's arrival and the form of Rafael van der Vaart. He was on the bench last Saturday – a recurring position that may lead him to find a new challenge elsewhere.
Newcastle, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Everton are also keen but may struggle to tempt Defoe out of London.
