Paul Warburton/Chronicle - QPR boss names points target for survival
QPR boss Mark Hughes has targeted 37 points as the total needed for Premier League survival.
The Rangers coach (pic) finally came clean today after weeks of being asked the same question and reckons Aston Villa could get dragged into the relegation dogfight after winning only twice in 10 matches – and one of those against west London neighbours Fulham.
Villa head five others including Rangers on the edge of the drop zone, with Hughes only too aware of what happens to a team on a downward spiral.
“Sometimes it happens teams have a run at the wrong time and that may be true of Villa,” he said.
“I don’t think it (survival) will be as low as the all-time figure of 34 points, but I don’t think it’s going to need 40, either,” he added. “I think halfway between the two will be about right.”
Hughes and co head for Old Trafford and a Sunday lunch showdown with Manchester United planning a ‘statement of intent’, as Sparky put it.
“There is no expectation for us to get anything there. But you have to have to take it to United in some way, and make a statement of intent," he added.
“If you show fear, sides like United will sense it, and they will quickly get on top.”
Central defender Fitz Hall has been added to the list of the injured, although DJ Campbell and Heidar Helguson have been added to the squad.
Both strikers return from long lay-offs although Hughes warned the likely bet was an appearance off the bench by Campbell.
He said: “DJ’s ahead of Heidar as far as fitness goes. Fulham Chronicle
NEW PREMIERSHIP YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
- Independent:- Green light for U21s league to replace reserves - Premier League
"The Premier League is to re-launch the current reserve team competitions as a national under-21s league, to provide game time for elite young players who are languishing on the bench, The Independent has learned. The League's 20 clubs have agreed that ..."
METRO - Premier League plots new U21 division
Reserve team players who are struggling to break into their club's first team look set to get more playing time in a higher-quality second-tier league, it has been revealed.
According to reports from the Independent, the Premier League has given the green light to revise the current reserve team competitions - split into northern and southern divisions - and establish a national under-21 league.
Stuart Pearce is backing changes to the way young players are developed (PA)
The games would take place at weekends, but after the Premier League matches, meaning that if a player were to make the bench for the first team but not play, they could still get minutes with the reserves.
Furthermore, the news source revealed a national under-18 league will also be created for all top-flight and Football League teams that have Category 1 status - the top grading in the new Elite Player Performance Plan, which was controversially introduced late in 2011.
The move comes amid widespread concern that young footballers in England aren't getting the chances to develop that their counterparts in other countries are enjoying.
England caretaker manager and under-21 boss Stuart Pearce recently commented on the situation: 'Too many of my players at under-21 level haven't had enough game time. Of that squad I may only have had eight or nine who played on the Saturday. Now that's a crying shame.' Metro
