Reading Chronicle- Connolly uncertain on Reading FC future

READING FC and Queens Park Rangers are set to be involved in a tug-of-war for the services of defender Matt Connolly.

The 24-year-old joined Royals on loan from parent club QPR in January and went on to make five appearances before suffering an ankle injury at Millwall.

He returned to play the final game of the season at Birmingham City, but now faces an uncertain summer after admitting he is not sure where he will be next season.

"Right now, I have no idea what the future holds. I still have one year left on my contract at QPR and I respect and honour that. I don't know how Mark Hughes [QPR manager] feels or has in his mind or what players he wants to keep, but I will go back there for pre-season and train," he said.

"Until I speak to them I don't know what's going to happen. Whatever happens over the summer happens, I'm not sure."

With QPR battling relegation from the top flight, Connolly is not even sure whether he will be playing Premier League football next season or not.

But asked whether he would like to stay at the Madejski, the defender said it 'felt like home' from the moment he joined.

"They are an amazing group of players and staff and it helped a lot. Brian [McDermott] is a great manager and I've had a great time here. But I have one more year with QPR," he commented.

"Every player wants to be wanted and I'm not sure what Brian is thinking at the moment but it's nice to have options."

While Connolly's future is unclear, Reading have confirmed that Andy Griffin, Brian Howard and Tomasz Cywka will not be staying with the club this summer..." Reading Chronicle

NICK WARD REMEMBERS

The West Australian - Ward keen for Glory at home

Among the memories collected over the six years since Nick Ward last played for Perth Glory is a brief dressing room encounter with supermodel Naomi Campbell.

After earning the A-League's young player of the year accolade for his impressive 2005-06 season with Glory, Ward had signed for English club Queens Park Rangers, then under the ownership of Formula One tycoon Bernie Eccle-stone and Italian businessman Flavio Briatore.

After one particular QPR defeat, Ward recalls Briatore walking into the changing room, with his former partner Campbell at his side, to let the players know the performance had not been good enough.

Briatore's "if you don't perform, you're gone" message was typical; Campbell's presence among the sweaty shirts and shin pads, not so.

"I said hi to her and she said hi back," Ward recalled yesterday, still amused by the peculiarity of the circumstances.

The 27-year-old might have learnt nothing from that particular exchange but the often bizarre experience of being at the Loftus Road club prepared Ward for the game's roller-coaster nature.

"I was a bit nave," he said. "I went to a club that had a lot going on and still has a lot going on."

Soon after Gary Waddock, the manager who had signed Ward, was sacked, the youngster was farmed out from QPR to Brighton and Hove Albion before his English sojourn came to an abrupt end.

"I don't regret going to England because I came back (to the A-League in 2007) and went into a Melbourne Victory side that played in two grand finals and won one," Ward said.

But he does regret making a hasty decision to cut short his Victory spell to join Wellington Phoenix in September 2010.

"I went to Wellington to play more games and to get back overseas," he said.

"I was chasing this dream that wasn't there. There's a great group of lads (at Wellington) and I really enjoyed being with them but with the lifestyle and that sort of thing, I wasn't the happiest.

"I should've played out the rest of the season with Victory."

The game time he had hoped to get under Phoenix boss Ricki Herbert was also in short supply last season and Ward was relieved when he was given the opportunity to return to Glory.

"It's been a tough two years and that's why I saw coming back here as a good opportunity," he said.

"It's a good time for me to come back home.

"I've got the support of my family and I will be in a good frame of mind so I can focus purely on football. I've got a one-year deal and I've got to prove my worth.

"My body feels good and I feel like I've learnt a lot about the game since I was here. I think I've got a lot to offer."

Ward, who made his Glory debut in the 2003-04 National Soccer League season, is confident the club can maintain the high standard set this season when it reached the A-League grand final for the first time, only to be beaten by a late goal against Brisbane Roar.
