Cardiff City to sign QPR striker Heidar Helguson

Aug 2 2012

Cardiff City will complete the signing of QPR striker Heidar Helguson from QPR in the next 24 hours.

The Icelandic hitman is on the brink of completing a one-year deal that will make him boss Malky Mackay's fifth signing of the summer.

The 34-year-old, who scored for Rangers on a pre-season tour of Malaysia yesterday, is deemed surplus to requirements by manager Mark Hughes.

Helguson, who has played more than 50 times for his country, played under Mackay during a loan spell at Watford in 2009/10.

He is expected to complete a medical and finalise terms on the free transfer deal later today.

The former Fulham striker follows Joe Lewis, Jordon Mutch, Kim Bo-Kyung and Etien Velikonja to Cardiff City Stadium ahead of the new season.

WalesOnline understands Mackay is still keen to add Wales striker Craig Bellamy to his squad before the end of this month, with Bellamy also a target for Hughes' Premier League side. Walesonline

PA Sport – Dyer fined for speeding

QPR's Kieron Dyer has been fined for a speeding offence after failing to attend court on Thursday morning.
The midfielder, of Coney Byes Lane, West Bergholt, Essex, previously denied a charge of failing to identify the driver of a Porsche.
He was due to stand trial at Lowestoft Magistrates' Court on Thursday but did not appear for the hearing.
Instead he pleaded guilty in his absence to an alternative charge of speeding by driving at 50mph in a 40mph zone in Ipswich.
Dyer, 33, who had a clean driving licence, was fined £45 and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge. He had three points added to his licence. EuroSport

HUGHES AIMS TO STRIKE RIGHT BALANCE
Posted on: Thu 02 Aug 2012

Mark Hughes admits he is still trying to find the right balance in his QPR squad - but is confident Rangers will be ready to hit the ground running come the start of the season.

The R's chalked off friendly win number four against Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night, with goals from Jamie Mackie, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Nedum Onuoha clinching the victory at Adams Park.

And whilst Hughes was satisfied with the performance and victory, he knows there is still work to be done before the big Barclays Premier League kick-off against Swansea City on August 18th.

"A lot of players left the Club in the summer and of course we've signed quite a few as well, but the balance of the squad still isn't quite right," he toldwww.qpr.co.uk.

"We're looking at that and hopefully by the time the 25-man squad is named we'll have the right balance and quality in place to be successful here.

"The process is still on-going in terms of players - there are still a number of weeks to go until the transfer window closes.

"If we're fortunate enough to bring a few players in to add to the quality we've already got then that's great, but some players will have to leave as well."

The Premier League rumour-mill is in overdrive at the moment, with a host of top names being linked with a move to Loftus Road, but Hughes refused to be drawn on specific targets, adding: "There are a lot of names flying around - as there always are at this stage of the season.

"But we prefer to get the job done and get the business concluded in-house instead of talking about specific targets."

With a plethora of new faces already through the entrance door in W12, the R's gaffer is fully-aware of expectancy levels rising, but he insists it's a pressure he'll thrive on.

"I'm sure there's a rise in expectations amongst supporters, but I've never been the kind of Manager that tries to quell that and then overachieve," he said.

"It's dangerous to go about it that way, because if you don't fulfil those expectations then people can get disappointed.

"We'll give it our best shot. We'll be positive and hopefully we can give the fans of this Club something to really shout about.

"If we have a positive attitude then we could do really well this season."

QPR boss keen to give Connolly a chance

QPR manager Mark Hughes says he always planned to give Matt Connolly a chance to impress this summer.

The defender fell out of favour at Loftus Road last season and spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Reading.

But Hughes, who took over as Rangers boss in January, has been keen to involve Connolly during pre-season before deciding whether the former Arsenal man has a future at the club.

“Matt’s done really well and he will get more game time,” said Hughes.

“It was difficult for him when I first came to the club because I hadn’t seen a great deal of him before and felt his best option was to go out on loan.

“But I always said that I wanted to see him in the summer and would give him that chance.” WestLondonSport

BLACKPOOL GAZETTE - BARTON KEEN TO PLAY IN FRIENDLY

Published on Thursday 2 August 2012 08:31

JOEY Barton could figure for Fleetwood Town at Highbury on Saturday, in a pre-season friendly with Tranmere Rovers.

The Queens Park Rangers midfielder, who has been given permission by the Hoops to train with Town to get fit, played 45 minutes in a closed match at Kilmarnock in midweek, and might well play again as Fleetwood take on Mellon’s old club Tranmere.

Mellon said: “I have so many things to sort out on coming back from Scotland with the team, that I haven’t really had time to think a lot about Joey and Saturday.

“I am led to believe that Joey could play for us on Saturday, and until somebody tells me the opposite he is allowed to play.

“He is a few weeks behind us because he hasn’t trained as much, but he has been a real, positive influence on the group.

“You can see that everyone wants to get to his high standards.”

Barton himself said of his experience training with Fleetwood and getting 45 minutes under his belt in the 4-1 win over Killie: “It feels painful and I’m a little bit stiff.

“This was only my fifth day of pre-season after eight or nearly nine weeks sitting with my feet up after the exploits of Premier League season last year.

“They (Fleetwood players) have been away in Austria and doing quite an intensive pre-season programme.

“This was about their third or fourth game now, and you can see that.

“They are really sharp and starting to look like a team.

“It was just a pleasure to be out there and get a sweat on.

“It’s a start to that much-needed fitness and that’s the whole reason of coming to Fleetwood.”

Barton felt Fleetwood would take plenty of encouragement into Saturday’s home friendly against Tranmere Rovers.

“I’m not being unfair to Kilmarnock if I say 4-0 flattered them.

“It could have been six, seven or eight, and that was a testament to the football the lads played.

“Certainly the lads in the first half had a couple of good chances.

“In the second half when I was involved, the lads created some really good chances.

“I certainly think Fleetwood can take a lot of positives out of the game.

“There was some good passages of play and, when I was watching in the first half, it made it more pleasing been part of the second half.”

Barton was a spectator for last Friday’s home defeat against League One side Oldham Athletic, and he said Town took that game as a wake-up call.

“I watched the Oldham game and everyone involved with the club was disappointed with the level of performance.

“Pre-season is about fitness and we had done fitness work a couple of days before the game.

“That means you start the match a little bit tired from the sessions.

“That’s pre-season and it’s more about fitness than the level of performance.

“But it’s always good to put game time under your belt like the lads have done.

“You then start seeing patterns of play emerge and, more importantly, scoring goals and winning games.

“Winning is a really good habit to get into and the sooner you do that then the better.

“If Fleetwood can build a little bit of momentum going into the Nottingham Forest and Torquay games with a win against Tranmere, which will be a test, then they will hopefully be off to a flying start in the League Cup and League Two campaign.” Blackpool Gazette
