Other Past Christmas Greetings From Loftus Road

Dave McIntyre/West London Sport - Fernandes must ‘bite the bullet’ and spend more, says Redknapp

Harry Redknapp says QPR must spend in January even if it means adding to the club’s whopping wage bill.

Rangers are struggling near the bottom of the table despite their huge spending under chairman Tony Fernandes and would like to offload some of their highly-paid under-performers.

But with offers for such players likely to be thin on the ground, there is no prospect of the manager having to sell before he can buy.

Redknapp explained: “The chairman knows we’re going to have to bite the bullet a bit and get on with what we’ve got if we’re going to get a couple in.

“We’ve just got to get them in, otherwise we’ll wait and it might not happen. We’ve got to find one or two who might help us.”

And the R’s boss insists the club must make signings as soon as the transfer window opens as they cannot afford to wait.

“We really need to do our business at the start of January. It’s no good us waiting until the last day,” he said.

“The end of January is too late. We’ve got to do our stuff before then. You can’t wait.” West London Sport

The Sun - Pat Sheehan: Jose Bosingwa fined £100,000 for refusing to be subExclusive
JOSE BOSINGWA has been hit with a £100,000 fine by QPR after he refused to be a sub.
The defender made it clear he was not prepared to sit on the bench against Fulham last week — and stormed out of Loftus Road.
Bosingwa was left out of the R’s squad that travelled to Newcastle yesterday with the club insisting he had damaged his back.
But SunSport can exclusively reveal that manager Harry Redknapp demanded that Rangers crack down hard on the player for questioning his authority.
The Portugal international must cough up the maximum fine of two weeks’ basic wage — which works out at around £100,000.
And it is difficult to see the ex-Chelsea man playing his way back into Redknapp’s immediate plans.
Bosingwa, 30, was among 12 players signed by former Rangers boss Mark Hughes in the summer.
He arrived on a free transfer from Stamford Bridge, where he was regularly criticised for his poor defending.
Relegation-threatened QPR managed only their first Premier League win of the season last weekend with a 2-1 victory over Fulham to get off the foot of the table.
Redknapp is determined to build a winning team spirit after being appointed as Hughes’ successor. And he will not put up with anyone not committed to the survival fight. The Sun

39 YEARS AGO TODAY: THE SEASON QPR DID THE DOUBLE OVER NEWCASTLE: 1973-74

1973-74 was QPR's first season back, having won promotion under Gordon Jago and Bobby Campbell. The earlier 3-2 win at Newcastle was QPR's First-ever away win (outside London) in the Old First Division (Thomas, Francis and Leach scoring for QPR - building up a 3-0 lead...Then 3-1...Then 3-2 and hanging on! The same QPR team as the December victory, with the exception of Hazell playing at #3 instead of Gillard in the September win)

Scorers in the home win: Clement, Givens, Bowles

15,000 (out of possible 33,000!) were there at Loftus Road to see...QPR end a run of five games without a win - with Gillard making only his second appearance of the season. (And going on from there to win U-21 and then England Caps)
