Premier League clubs head to UAE for winter break
Feb 10, 2013 15

Time to recharge: Swansea will use the break to prepare for the Cup final.

English Premier League clubs are the latest to descend on the UAE as Swansea City, Reading, Norwich City, and Queens Park Rangers take advantage of the warmer winter climate to enjoy some respite from the colder conditions of the British Isles.

Last month, a swathe of Bundesliga clubs, including Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Gladbach flew over to the UAE for some warm-weather training and friendly matches, while a host of national teams set up base here ahead of the African Cup of Nations.

And now is the turn of the Premier League to jet over for a sunny break ahead of the intensity of the season run-in.

Swansea arrive in the Emirates off the back of an impressive league victory over Queens Park Rangers and will use their warm-weather training camp as a chance to prepare for their Capital One Cup final against Bradford City on February 24.

The Swans, currently seventh in the Premier League table, will be setting up camp in Dubai and a couple of their players took to social media ahead of their arrival. Winger Nathan Dyer wrote on Twitter: “OFF TO DUBAI!!”while on-loan midfielder Jonathan De Guzman posted a picture on his Facebook page of the players on the plane.

In stark contrast to Swansea’s fortunes this season, Norwich, Reading and QPR will hope to use their respective breaks in the Emirates as a chance to re-energise ahead of what is sure to be a tense, nail-biting relegation battle.

QPR remain mired to the bottom of the table, seven points clear of safety, and manager Harry Redknapp will want his players to take the break in Dubai to refocus before giving their all to retain their Premier League status.

Reading, who will also be based in Dubai, are not faring much better than QPR this season. However, Brian McDermott’s squad is just one point away from safety and a run of positive results could see them climb out of the basement.

One of Reading’s players – defender Sean Morrison – expressed his delight at spending a few days in the sunshine when he tweeted: “Annnnnnnnnd we're off! ... Dubai bound.”

While the Swansea, Reading and QPR set up camp in Dubai, Norwich have opted for the slightly less hectic setting of Abu Dhabi.

Chris Hughton has decided to take his players to the UAE capital and while they are currently six points above the drop zone, the Canaries will use the trip to Abu Dhabi to recharge before expending their efforts in the last few months of the season to ensure their top-flight safety.

Finally, West Ham manager Sam Allardyce will also be in the UAE over the next few days and will be residing in Dubai.

'Big Sam' will be the star attraction at 'An evening with' on Wednesday, February 13 at the Movenpick Hotel on JBR. Entrance is free with the Hammers boss regaling his experiences in football from 9pm onwards.  Sport360

  • TALKSPORT - Exclusive – Wicks fears for QPR’s long-term future if they’re relegatedAnton Stanley | Sunday, February 10, 2013

    Former
Queens Park Rangers star Steve Wicks has told talkSPORT that he is worried about the club’s future should they be relegated from the Premier League this season.
The Super Hoops currently sit bottom of the Premier League table with 17 points and are six points away from safety following their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea City.
And, following the club’s spending on transfers in January, their former defender admits he’s concerned about their financial stability.
“The big problem with QPR is that there are no football people at the club. Someone should advise [Tony Fernandes] a bit differently.
“If QPR do get relegated their crowds will go down to about 11,000 and the long-term future of the club is quite frightening with all these players on, it’s all hearsay so I can’t say that it’s true, £100,000-a-week, £90,000-a-week and six or seven players out on loan on that sort of money.
“There is still time [to save themselves] and the good thing for QPR is that teams above them also lost, so they’ve still got a chance, but they’ve got to start now putting a shift in.”
Meanwhile, Wicks was disheartened by some of the individual performances from Queens Park Rangers in their defeat to Swansea.
“I cannot believe the lack of passion in that first 45 minutes,” he fumed. “They haven’t got any real organisers or leaders.
“I don’t think Samba has played for about two months so it’s going to take time for him to settle in.
“But also, one thing that concerned me yesterday was the individual mistakes that cost us goals. They were poor goals yesterday and that will upset Harry.”

SWANSEA RESPONSES

Tony Fernandes ‏@tonyfernandesIn a strange way I felt second half was good. We had many chances. I'm not giving up. Enough games to go. Keep believing.

Amit Bhatia ‏@Amit_Bhatia99
Feel sad tonight that we put on a weak performance today in an important match. But I #still#believe. We'll go on a run soon. #keepthefaith

A QPR REPORT PERSPECTIVE -

The Club and its "Associations"
An ongoing matter of continued "regret" to at least this blogger:  That Queen's Park Rangers FC continue to provide a forum on its Official Match Day broadcast show to "QBlockPete" - Pete Davies.
Ultimately, obviously the owners and senior management of Queen's Park Rangers Football determine who they want to employ or utilize. But equally, QPR supporters - quite a few of whom have been supporting QPR a lot longer than any of the current QPR owners, employees, or "Associates" - retain the freedom to express their views (whether supportive or critical) and concerns on matters pertaining to QPR.
If you want to express any views on this matter either privately or publicly, pm me on the QPR Report Messageboard or email at qprreport@hotmail.com
