In the FA Cup Third Round Replay: QPR 1 Chelsea 0

15, 1974: It was a midweek, early afternoon kickoff - during the Three
Day Week. And it was a cold snowy day, as I recall!
Cup replay at Loftus Road...after drawing 0-0 at Chelsea.
Chelsea under Dave Sexton were in turmoil, dropping Osgood and Hudson..

Jago's QPR, in their first season back in the old Division One - and in
only their second-ever season in the First Division - travelled to Dave
Sexton's "Mighty" Chelsea. And got a draw: 0-0. (Chelsea just prior to
the game had transfer listed Peter Osgood and Alan Hudson - QPR should
have bought Hudson,like they were linked to.)

Days later, January 15, 1974, in an early afternoon, midweek game (it
was during the era of the "Three Day Week" industrial action, QPR, with
the same team defeated Chelsea 1-0 with Stan Bowles scoring.

Tuesday, January 15 1974 - FA Cup Third Round Replay
A classic headed goal by Stanley Bowles sent Rangers rampaging into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.
This
replay was necessary after the sides drew 0-0 at Stamford Bridge. The
R's dominated that first game and went closest to scoring when a Gerry
Francis penalty was pushed away by Chelsea keeper John Phillips.
With
the miners' strike and three day week in operation, the floodlights
could not be used at Loftus Road. So the re-match was scheduled for a
lunchtime 1.30pm start on Tuesday, January 8. However, after heavy rain
the day before, match referee Mr David Smith of Gloucestershire called
the tie off less than two hours before the planned kick-off.
QPR
then moved quickly to advise spectators of the waterlogged pitch. Within
seven minutes of the ref's decision, Rangers had notified the local
radio stations, the two London evening papers, the press agencies and
television companies. In addition, local police arranged for 'Match
Postponed' boards to be displayed at all tube and railway stations en
route to the ground.
The fixture was subsequently rearranged for
seven days later - again with a 1.30pm Tuesday billing. This was a mild,
sunny day but the pitch was very heavy and greasy. And a bumper crowd
of 28,715 packed into Loftus Road.
Rangers were fifth in the top
flight at the time with Chelsea languishing in 17th spot. The visitors'
line-up included John Hollins and David Webb, who were both later
destined to move to QPR along with their manager Dave Sexton.
The
Super Hoops dominated the replay for long spells on a multi-speckled
mud heap of a surface. Frank McLintock had a goal disallowed early on.
Then Don Givens sent in a powerful header which squirmed under keeper
Phillips but it was hacked off the line by Chelsea defender Marvin
Hinton.
We finally made the vital breakthrough on 63 minutes.
Dave Thomas dwelt on the ball and then tickled it through to overlapping
full-back Dave Clement. He made a brilliant, buccaneering run down the
right before crossing for Stan Bowles to nod home in emphatic fashion.
It
took the 'Pensioners' 82 minutes to win their first corner. Although
they came close to snatching a late and undeserved equaliser. David
Webb, who was playing as a makeshift centre-forward, pounced on to a
loose clearance and volleyed the ball left footed against the crossbar.
Bowles
was stretchered off in the final seconds with a gash on his ankle and a
badly bruised calf. This followed a crunching tackle by Chelsea's Ron
'Chopper' Harris, who had already been booked for an earlier challenge
on the R's number 10. Harris could well have been sent off it the
referee had seen the second incident.
Despite this setback,
Rangers held firm to register a first ever victory against our close
rivals in a recognised competitive fixture. However, the celebrations at
the final whistle were subdued due to an outbreak of serious
hooliganism by the Chelsea fans who had been standing at the Loft end.
Wearing
their trademark uniform of laced up Dr Martens boots and white flared
trousers, they surged forward to demolish the wall that formed a boys'
enclosure at the front of the terrace. One spectator was injured in the
crush. Then the visitors' supporters stormed through a line of police
and on to the playing area in a bid to pull down the goalposts.
R's
secretary Ron Phillips told newspapers: "The Loft terrace wall did not
give way under pressure. It was deliberate vandalism. It was kicked and
pushed down by the Chelsea fans as they tried to get on to the pitch in
their disappointment at losing."
Concentrating on the football,
Rangers first team coach Steve Burtenshaw said afterwards: "Our team did
very well under what was, at times, provocation by Chelsea's robust
play. There were some very harsh tackles indeed.
"The conditions
were bad but we proved that it is possible to play pure football on any
surface if you have the skill. I always felt that the goal would come."
Veteran
QPR defender Frank McLintock added: "Stan Bowles is in such a relaxed
frame of mind that he played in this tense replay against Chelsea as he
does in five-a-side games.
"Stan stopped the ball, shielded it
and then threaded it through opponents' legs! You might have imagined
that we were in a practise session rather than facing one of the top
teams in the country before a 28,000 partisan crowd!"
In his
match report in the Sun newspaper, Bob Driscoll wrote:
"Bruised...battered...but on top of the world. That's Stan Bowles, the
new king of West London...Chelsea have dominated West London for a long
time but the crown has been snatched from them by QPR."
This match was the only time in our history that we have defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup...so far! QPR

AFC U-22 Championship - AFC U-22 C'ship: Iran 0-1 Australia

Muscat:
A goal from Petros Skapetis put Australia into the quarter-finals of
the AFC U-22 Championship with a 1-0 victory over Iran in Group C at
Royal Police Stadium on Tuesday.
The Australian forward latched
on to a loose ball on the 56th minute and fired home after Iranian
goalkeeper Ali Reza Beiranvand could only parry defender Curtis Good’s
header following a corner kick.
And although Iran threw on two
more forwards in an attempt to restore parity, they were unable to
breakdown a very organised Australian side, who might have scored again
through midfielder Stefan Mauk in the final minutes of the match.
“We
knew it would be a hard and physical game but I’m happy with the
performance of my players” said Australia coach Aurelio Vidmar.
“We
need to get a bit more composure, especially through the midfield, as
the game got very stretched at times. But overall, I’m very pleased.”
While
Iran welcomed back defender Vahid Esmaeilbeigi and midfielder Morteza
Pouraliganji to the side from suspension, Australia coach Vidmar swapped
almost his entire starting line-up from the 11 that began the 1-0 over
Kuwait on Sunday.
“Every team has the same amount of players, our philosophy is to give everyone an opportunity.
"we wanted everyone to each get a full game, and we’ve achieved that so far,” explained Vidmar.
“There’s no first team or second team, I’m just trying to build one team.”
In
a tight first half with chances at a premium, one of Vidmar’s changes,
striker Adam Taggart, had his side’s first effort on goal inside the
first 10 minutes as his free-kick from just outside the penalty area
went narrowly over the crossbar.
Taggart was the most likely
source of a breakthrough for Australia in the first period and on the
23rd minute he sent another curling shot drifted wide.
In between
those strikes by the Australia forward, Mehdi Shiri went close for Iran
with a deflected effort that goalkeeper Aaron Lennox pushed out, and a
swerving long range effort that was just off target.
Australia
came out fired up for the second half, however, and in the first minute
after the restart Andrew Hoole’s penetrating run down the right side was
followed by a shot from the right winger that needed to be punched
clear by an alert Beiranvand at his near post.
Centre-back Good
was then forced to leave the field for treatment to a nasty gash above
his eye following a clash of heads, and with the big centre-back off the
field, Iran had their best chance to open the scoring as Kaveh Rezaei
slipped in Benham Barzay for a low shot from inside the penalty area
that was parried wide by Lennox in the Australia goal.
But with
Good back on the field sporting a mass of white gauzing around his
injured forehead, it was Australia who took the lead.
Awarded a
free-kick in a central area on the 55th minute, Hoole skimmed a low shot
off the turf that was pushed out for a corner by the Iranian custodian.
But
from the resulting set-piece, a hurtling blur of bandages in the form
of Good powered a header on target that Beiranvand could only parry as
far as the waiting Skapetis, who hooked the ball into the gaping net.
In
a bid to seek an equaliser, Iran brought on strikers Arsalan Motahhari
and Seyed Miri and it was the former who had his side’s best chance with
a low shot into the arms of a sprawling Lennox following good work from
Rezaei.
Australia dominated possession for the remains of the
second half, although Motahhari had time for another effort at the death
but this time his shot from the edge of the penalty area went wide of
Lennox’s right-hand post.
With a lengthy seven minutes of
stoppage time added due to Good’s extended treatment, Maulk could have
put the game to bed, but a good save from Beiranvand prevented the
second half substitute from doubling the advantage.
“It was a
physically demanding game and we can say a game of small differences.
Australia is a great team, very organised with a fighting spirit,” said
Iran coach Human Afazeli.
“A big difference was that Australia
used almost 11 new players, and we couldn’t do that as we have only 20
players in our squad and three of them are goalkeepers.
“I want to praise my players, they showed fantastic effort. I am satisfied with their efforts, they did a good job.”

Ex-QPR mates aim to power Pahang to glory
ZESHAN
Rehman is relishing the chance to reunite with his former Queens Park
Rangers teammate Damion Stewart as the two centre-backs hope to steer
Pahang to glory in the Super League this season.
Zeshan, who was
the first Pakistan international to play in England, formed a formidable
partnership in defence with Stewart for QPR between 2006-09.
The
duo are expected to start when Pahang take on Singapore's LionsXII in
the Charity Shield-cum-league match at Darulmakmur Stadium on Friday.
Zeshan,
30, started his professional career with 21 appearances for Fulham in
2003 and also represented England in various age-group competitions
before making his debut for Pakistan nine years ago.
"Damion and I
played together for a few seasons in England and we know each other
on-and-off the pitch. Hopefully, we can get our partnership going for
Pahang in the league," said Zeshman after Pahang's signing ceremony with
apparel sponsor Puma in Bandar Utama yesterday.
"He told me
about Pahang and I also spoke to others about the club. Everyone said
only good things about Pahang. My aim is to give the fans something to
cheer about this season."
Zeshan, who had loan stints with
Blackpool and Bradford City, believes Pahang have the quality to
progress accordingly following their Malaysia Cup success last season.
"I
have been following the M-League for the last two seasons as I played
AFC Cup matches here with my former club, Kitchee FC of Hong Kong.
"The
level of play is high and the fans are passionate about the game. I
believe Pahang are a good side with a strong foundation as 95 per cent
of their players have been together for several years.
"The
target (of retaining the Malaysia Cup and finishing in the top three
bracket in the league) is achievable. We need to focus on ourselves as
other teams will pay attention to us following last season's success,"
Zeshan added.
Despite not having enough training time in Kuantan
due to the recent floods and a poor pre-season in Hong Kong, coach
Ronald Smith believes his team will do well in their opening league
matches.
"I only joined the team recently in Hong Kong for friendly matches on synthetic pitches.
"It
was an important trip for conditioning. Upon arriving in Kuantan, we
only had one training session due to the heavy downpour.
"Despite
the limited training time, my players are responding well to my methods
and should have a good start against Lions on Friday," said Smith.
Smith,
who helped Sabah win the Premier League and also reach the Malaysia Cup
final in 1996, signed a one-year deal with a clause, reviewing his
contract every three months.
"The contract was drawn up in
December when I was still keen to go to the World Cup finals in Brazil
with Australia. I've been doing match analysis for Australia for the
last decade and had gone for the last two World Cups.
"I will
remain with Pahang for the entire season and not go for the World Cup
finals as it is not like I'm coaching the Australia team," Smith added.
Meanwhile,
Pahang FA (PFA) signed a three-year deal worth RM3 million with Puma in
a ceremony attended by its president Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad
Shah yesterday.
Tengku Abdul Rahman said the new sponsorship will spur his players to greater heights for the new season.
"I want my players to step up and play in the league and do well in every game," said Tengku Abdul Rahman.
On
whether PFA has appealed the FA of Malaysia's decision to allow its
former midfielder Amirulhadi Zainal to play for Darul Ta'zim following a
contract dispute, Tengku Abdul Rahman said his association had done so
and was waiting for a response.
