Herald Sun - Stefan Moore earns Melbourne Victory stripes
ENGLISHMAN Stefan Moore staked an early claim for a permanent contract with Melbourne Victory, scoring twice in a practice game against Victorian Premier League side Whittlesea Zebras at Epping Stadium last night.
Moore arrived in Melbourne last week after being among six players released by struggling English Championship side Queens Park Rangers following a change of ownership, and has been given a fortnight to impress coach Ernie Merrick.
Last night Moore showed he's got a nose for goals, netting twice in the first half before tiring and getting replaced amid wholesale changes in the second half.
Moore turned under pressure after receiving a pass from Archie Thompson to net the first and then finished off a cutback from Matthew Kemp as Victory fought back from a goal down to win 3-1 against last season's VPL grand finalist.
The Zebras had Liberian striker Jerry Karpeh, newly signed from A-League club Perth Glory, and he gave them an early lead when he was awarded a penalty after being brought down by Steve Pantelidis. Goran Talevski, back in Australia after four years playing for Hajduk Split in Croatia, converted the penalty.
Victory also gave a first run to midfielder Billy Celeski, signed from Perth and added to the squad for the Asian Champions League. Celeski combined with Kemp to set up Victory's other goal in the second half.
With its Asian campaign starting on March 12, Merrick used the match to give most of his squad match time and started with a unusual midfield of Patafta alongside Celeski and Leigh Broxham.
Moore lined up alongside Danny Allsopp and Thompson in a three-pronged attack.
Merrick made six changes in the second half to get a look at Brazilian Leandro in a striking role alongside Moore... Report
