Charles Sale/Daily Mail - QPR bosses got me wrong, says Flavio
- Renault motor racing boss Flavio Briatore has pledged his long-term commitment to Championship club Queens Park Rangers, despite the crazy turmoil at Loftus Road since he took charge 18 months ago.
- Briatore, at the Monaco Grand Prix, says: ‘I believe that I can successfully run a Formula One team and a football club. I have only had a short time in football and now is not the time to judge me. That’s for the future, as I have no intention of quitting QPR.’
- The 59-year-old Italian, who had his 29-year-old TV hostess wife Elisabetta Gregoraci on his arm, says he’s been wrongly portrayed as interfering in team affairs, although every QPR boss claims he does.
- The fact that Briatore had different views about strikers Gavin Mahon and Dexter Blackstock from those of Iain Dowie and Paulo Sousa was pivotal to both managers’ departures. But Briatore claims: ‘I send emails but I don’t get in the way. Dowie was the only manager I sacked. Sousa was dismissed for breach of contract. We have had so many applicants to be our new manager and we will decide soon.’ Daily Mail
Repost from Sunday's QPR Report - Bernie Ecclestone Interviewed in Gulf News on Buying QPR
- ".....What about your interests in football?"
- Yes I persuaded Flavio Briatore to join me and put some money into buying Queens Park Rangers, the old and long-established club that had fallen on hard times. I had a look at buying Chelsea - but it was too complicated an issue and needed far too much effort to sort out the books. Liverpool, too, and Manchestyer United were considerations, too, but in the end I figured I lived too far away ... 200 or so miles ... to buy into teams so distant from my home in London. I didn't fancy the idea of traipsing up and down the country on top of all the travelling I do on F1 business.
- When I approached Flavio with the proposal he thought it was a restaurant we'd be buying! No kidding. But he was just as excited as me when I told him it was a football team.
- I have since become a friend of Roman Abramovich who took up where I left off and bought Chelsea. And I often share his box at Stamford Bridge or fly off in my own plane to watch them when they are playing overseas. I must say I never would have believed it, but I am real big soccer fan now. I used to say that if the two greatest teams in the world were playing in my back garden I wouldn't be bothered to watch them. Not now. I'm hooked on the game...." Gulf News
Jamaica Observer/Sean Williams - Stewart's late header rescues Boyz
- FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida - Playing with 10 men for 45 minutes, Jamaica's Reggae Boyz staged a courageous fightback to draw 2-2 with Haiti in a friendly international at Lockhart Stadium here on Saturday.
- Before an estimated 12,000 fans, Damion 'Stew Peas' Stewart popped up at the far post in the 88th minute to rescue Jamaica, as they appeared destined for defeat. Stewart was responding to Nicholas Addlery's opening strike in the 29th minute and two from Haiti's Jean Robens Jerome (39th minute) and Leonel Saint Preux (66th)....
Haiti, ranked 122nd by FIFA.....
- And like he has done for Queens Park Rangers in the English Championships, Stewart appeared from the shadows to head home a lofted free kick into the area by Morrison in the 88th minute..." Jamaica Observer

Gulf News Motor Racing - May 23, 2009 - 'I'm happy to enjoy the rewards of a good job' By Ted Macauley, Special to Gulf News
- London: Bernie Ecclestone sits on the top deck behind the blacked-out windows of his mobile HQ, isolated by his power and privilege, in the Monaco Grand Prix paddock, surveying the scene from the travelling power base of his Formula One empire.
- It has been a fraught last few weeks, what with his divorce from his wife Slavica and the machinations of F1's power brokers, Ferrari in particular, looking to defy the proposed budget-cap and any rule change, and the to-ing and fro-ing over the future of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.Gulf News: How do you see yourself?
- Ecclestone: I know I am regarded as a hard and uncaring guy, and that I am driven by money - but a lot of people in F1 are multi-millionaires because of my attitude to business and the sport. And they should be thankful for the stances I have taken, not always popular, over the years to give F1 its worldwide success. Sure, I have benefited, but so have the teams.
And that includes Ferrari whom right now are being idiotic in their stand against the proposed cost capping and then rule changes which to my mind all benefit the sport and the spectacle.
- You have been reviled because of your unyielding and unbending position over Silverstone, the old wartime venue for the British Grand Prix and its annual pilgrimage of 200,000 petrol heads. What do you want to happen?
- I am fed up of it being like a Gentlemen's Club, all blazers and old-fashioned notions locked in outdated tradition. I'd like to see it uprated and updated and its facilities fit for the fans like they have done in Bahrain and will do at Abu Dhabi, two tracks that have been only too eager to please and make sure the spectators get their money's worth.
- Not only that, they have been absolutely brilliant and done everything I have asked without demur. Unlike Silverstone who have dragged their feet for years and deserve to lose the race. The public should not forget, it is their interests I have at heart.
- What is your overall feeling about the people who run it, The British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) ?
- They are living in a time warp. The BRDC is overseen by old-fashioned, struck-in-a-rut members who have failed to come up to the mark I have set for the circuit. The race has reminded not of a midsummer Grand Prix, but a second-rate village fete run by clubby toffs. They were mad not take all my proposals on board when I first mooted them years ago. I guess they never dreamed they could ever lose the Grand Prix. Well, now they know.
- I know you refuse to budge on your almost obsessive high standards which not only apply to F1 but to your immaculate office in London overlooking Hyde Park, and your staff and to your private life. Do you have any examples of how you regulate it all?
- I often put in 12-14 hours a day at the office. I fly around the world in my own jet, not for fun, but as the frontman for F1 with great responsibility. And I don't dodge the hard work. Never have. Never will. And anybody in my orbit who does get the rough end of my treatment. For instance, I once fitted short-run time switches on the lights in the lavatory outside my office when I found that workmen were spending too much time in there doing crosswords or reading the horse race pages and writing bets for the bookies. They were slacking, dodging work and costing me time and money. I won't have that. And I like a tidy office, too. I won't have my staff drying their wet clothes off on the radiators when they come in out of the rain.
- How do you view your life?
- I am devoted to this job, it gives me enormous pleasure and, more importantly, professional satisfaction. That may have cost me my marriage, but it is the way I am and I can't change that. Not that I would want to. Sure, it pays me good money. It is common knowledge from the Rich List published in the UK that I am a double billionaire. I have my own jet, a nice yacht, a hotel I own in Switzerland and a lovely lifestyle. But I pay all my taxes. I don't dodge anything and I expect other people to share my honesty and my sense of purpose. There are a lot of rich guys - and grateful wives - out there who are wealthy because of my efforts for this sport.
- I don't want knighthoods from the British government or medals or awards or statues put up in my memory - look what pigeons do on them - I am happy to enjoy the rewards of doing a good job and having the appreciation of the people I work hard to try to please ... those people who made good money to go to a GrandPrix wherever it is in the world.
- What about your interests in football?Yes, I persuaded Flavio Briatore to - join me and put some money into buying Queens Park Rangers, the old and long-established club that had fallen on hard times. I used to say that if the two greatest teams in the world were playing in my back garden I wouldn't be bothered to watch them. Not now. I'm hooked on the game.
What about big stars?
- Well, Michael Schumacher, of course, was a superstar. Probably the greatest driver of all time and a professional of admirable devotion. Not the most charismatic, but a hero to millions just the same. I think that when McLaren get their car right and their support for Lewis Hamilton on song, he is another massive star and multi-champion in the making. And he has the right level of talent and charisma to attract a world of support. He is a gifted boy.
- Talking about superstars. What about David Beckham? He's a dream, a fantastic attraction all lover the globe. Even now towards the close of his career. And as for his ability to generate vast monies and sponsorships ... wow ... I just wish he could drive a Formula One car.
What about retirement plans?
I just want to work until I draw my last breath. I'm 78 now, I've had a heart by-pass operation and I feel good and fit. But I will never, ever retire. You will only be sure that I have quit when I am being lowered into my grave."

QPR's 'Stew Peas' ready to simmer Jamaica Observer/SEAN A WILLIAMS Assistant Sports Editor Sun, May 24, 2009
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida - Damion Stewart is a man on top of his world. A world he has built with hard work, dedication and sense of purpose. But he's out to conquer new ones even as he's being crowned the king of his.
Stewart, 28, was named the outstanding player for English Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers (QPR) where he was lifted above all by a vote of his peers and fans to end his season on a high note, but the Jamaica defender is not resting on his laurels and is poised to set sail for new horizons.
"It's obvious that every serious player's dream playing in England is to get into the Premier League, so hopefully if I don't go up with my team next season maybe some club will come and get me... when you have an outstanding season like I had there is always rumours of people showing an interest in you, but my focus is with QPR right now," said Stewart in Fort Lauderdale with the Reggae Boyz for a friendly international against Haiti.
Popularly called 'Stew Peas' after the favourite Jamaican dish, Stewart is also relishing the honour of being the top performer at the London-based QPR.
"I'm really feeling good about it, but it's not something that I'm really surprised about... because this season I was pretty much the outstanding one and I'm really honoured to get this award from my club knowing that it is coming from the fans and the players," he said.
And while his 2008/2009 season appears a perfect one by some measure, Stewart is looking to add spice to the pot of his simmering professional career.
"I'm never satisfied; I'm one who's always trying to do better to improve myself, but the areas that I would be looking to improve on is getting forward and using the ball more offensively, but defensively I think I am solid," said the no-nonsense centre back.
Last season, Stewart ventured out of defence to score four goals, and the season before he also had one. Next season he's looking to eclipse those records, though he has not settled on a figure.
"It's always a bonus for a defender to score, but my team is always looking to me to get the odd one because I'm really aggressive whenever I get into the box... hopefully I can do better next season," he said from the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites here on Friday.
Four years in the tough and competitive world of English football have taught the strapping player vital lessons that he hopes to transfer to the Jamaica set-up.
"The English game is more professional... it's all about your attitude and work ethics and of course my organisation at the back has gotten better," noted Stewart, a former Ardenne High star.
Like fellow Jamaica defender, Claude Davis, Stewart is still peeved by being left out of the first three semi-final round CONCACAF World Cup qualifying matches against Canada, Mexico and Honduras by former technical director Rene Simoes.
"The ultimate dream is to play in the World Cup and not being invited for the first set of games was heartbreaking... that was like a dagger to my heart, but we have to put that behind us and remain focused," he said.
"When I look at the teams that are going through right now and when you see the last three games we played, we could have qualified easily and most of these teams are happy that we didn't come through because we would have damaged them with the quality that we have got," Stewart noted.
Jamaica - after drawing with Canada 1-1 in Toronto, losing 0-3 to Mexico at the Azteca and crashing to Honduras in San Pedro Sula 0-2 under Simoes and a team bereft of experience - were staring down the barrel of elimination.
But after the sacking of Simoes following the Honduras game, the team made an amazing comeback under Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore in three return home matches, defeating Mexico and Honduras 1-0, then crushing Canada 3-0.
But that was not enough as they lost on goal difference after finishing on 10 points with Mexico.
"I know that the Jamaican people are very disappointed, but they must understand that we as players are disappointed as well... we have to now look forward to what we have got and what we have at the moment is the Gold Cup and the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup," Stewart said.
The former Harbour View man, capped 47 times for his country, started his professional career in England on a season-long loan with League One Bradford City in 2005/2006.
Bradford manager Colin Todd had hoped to keep Stewart on, but his form earned him a six-figure transfer to QPR. After a shaky start to life in the Championship, Stewart hit form after the arrival of Danny Cullip from Nottingham Forest and soon cemented his place in the Shepherd Bush-based side." 4TheGame - Cerny: We needed victories
- Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Radek Cerny has called on his side to win more games next season to ensure that they mount a promotion challenge.
- The 35-year-old kept 19 clean sheets in 47 appearances for the R's in his first season with the club, earning a joint share of the Championship's Golden Glove award for 2008-09.
- However, Cerny admitted that his side needed to convert some of their 16 league draws into victories to move higher in the table.
- He told the club's official website: "I'm really pleased to win this award, but I'd much rather have won a medal for going up.
- "Keeping clean sheets is a big part of a goalkeeper's job, but I have never really kept count.
- "I prefer to keep count of the number of wins we register, because that's what governs where you finish in the league at the end of the season.
- "We didn't win enough matches last season and that is something we need to improve next season." 4thegame

BBC Live - Ian Holloway On Dennis Oli
- "I had Dennis Oli as a trainee at QPR and he used to chase pigeons. He was so fast he used to catch some as well. He's a smashing lad and I'm delighted he is enjoying a career with Gillingham." Ian Holloway co-commentating on BBC Five Live

STAN BOWLES - Daily Mail/Ivan Speck - Football icon Stan Bowles doesn't care who goes down... as long as it's Sunderland
- A Mancunian showboater of the Seventies often mistaken as a Cockney wide boy would be the last person you would expect to carry a mischievously burning desire to see Sunderland relegated.
- Then again, Stan Bowles never did stereotypes.
- The hair is white now, the face weathered by age and a steady diet of cigarettes and alcohol, yet the chirpiness which once saw him knock the FA Cup off its perch at Roker Park and cause a riot that shattered Sunderland's post-Cup final honeymoon still swims impishly in the crystal-clear blue waters of his 60-year-old eyes.
- What a player: Bowles (left) with model Jenny Clarke in 1976
'I don't care who goes down on Sunday as long as it's Sunderland,' Bowles says, a half-smile running across his lips.
'They don't like me to this day up there. Do I like them? No, not really.'
- One of English football's generation of entertainers - alongside the likes of George Best, Charlie George, Alan Hudson and Rodney Marsh - Bowles cared not for protocol or respect, especially on that Roker evening in May 1973.
Second Division Sunderland had beaten mighty Leeds to lift the FA Cup. Four days later, they hosted already-promoted Queens Park Rangers in their final league game.
- The Cup was paraded, celebration was in the air. Not content with kicking a ball at the Cup and tipping it off its table, Bowles goaded the Sunderland players throughout QPR's 3-0 win, in which he scored twice.
- One Wembley hero, midfielder Mick Horswill, was sent off for a tackle on him, and Bowles then pulled the ultimate stunt on keeper Jim Montgomery, whose double save had passed into Cup final legend.
- 'I went round him and put the ball almost on the line waiting for him to scramble across his goalmouth before I tapped it in,' Bowles said.
- 'That was it. All of a sudden from the top end the fans came on the pitch. It was madness, seeing a few thousand people running at you. I made sure I got down the tunnel sharpish.
The man: Stan Bowles strides confidently away from the goalmouth after scoring against Manchester United for QPR
- 'The fans had seen I was taking the p***. Asking the Sunderland players how the f*** they had beaten Leeds and getting them angrier and angrier by the moment.
- 'We weren't allowed to go out after that game because the fans gathered outside the hotel where we were staying. I think they got fined for it afterwards, for something I caused. F****** good job. I never played at Sunderland again. If I'd seen the fixture coming up, though, I'd have thought about inventing a groin strain to get out of playing there.
- 'If I had a choice of who's going down on Sunday it would be them.'
- That's Stanley Bowles. As irreverent and irrational today as during a playing career that many believed could have been glorious had he committed as much attention to his football as he did to gambling. He was given his first racing tip at 16, when he pressed raincoats in a Manchester factory. He put a fiver on the horse at 10-1. It won. Just about the last time he backed a winner, if you believe the stories.
- 'I was renowned for being arrogant. I wasn't really. I just knew what I was doing on the pitch. When I was on my game I felt unstoppable and I let them know. I'd go past a fella trying to tackle me, look back at him and say, "Come on, get up, I'll let you have another go".
- 'That's why they never liked me in the England squad. Even the Liverpool players didn't really talk to me. Kevin Keegan was all right, but the rest - Emlyn Hughes and Phil Thompson among them - were a bit frosty because I'd taken the p*** when we played them.'
- Bowles walked out on England after being substituted against Northern Ireland. He would later walk out on Brian Clough and a place in a Nottingham Forest European Cup final side - 'That medal would be worth 20 grand now'.
The tales he tells are part of his after-dinner speaking routine. How he was sacked by Manchester City for missing a flight to play Ajax. 'I told them I was on my way, but what I didn't know was that the flight was delayed for three hours. I didn't actually try to go at all.'
- How he was shown the door again after five weeks at Bury. 'I took a cab to training and told the manager to take the fare out of my wages. He wouldn't, so I jumped back in the cab and went back to Manchester.'
- How he would arrive at the QPR ground from the bookies at 2.50pm and throw on his kit, how he asked fans with radios which horse had won the 3.20pm at Kempton.
Then there were his drinking sessions with the late George Best.
- 'It was always at an Irish pub in Chelsea Harbour. George used to have white wine and soda in a glass bigger than a pint glass and double brandies with it. I couldn't keep up with him. I normally just drank beer, so I'd come out of there and start walking the wrong way, over one of the bridges. That's how drunk I was.'
Thankfully for Sunderland fans, they don't make them like Stan Bowles any more. Mail
RODNEY MARSH: The Guardian, Thursday 21 May 2009 Marsh and Sir Alf
1960s and 70s legend Rodney Marsh on his relationship with Alf Ramsey and how workhorses still seem to take precedence in the England side over skilful risk-takers
- The thing you have to remember is that Alf Ramsey and I came from the same place. We were both cockneys. The other thing is that Alf tended to speak in a very poncey plum-in-the-mouth way. It was all "Oh hello Rodney and how are you?". To me it was all complete bollocks. The last time I was picked by him for England we had a team talk before the game and Alf told me we all had to work harder. "Rodney you in particular," he said in his accent. Then he said: "if you don't work hard I'm going to pull you off at half time." And I said: "Christ, at Man City all we get is a cup of tea and an orange."
- Nobody laughed. And not only that, but it was the last time I ever got picked. There was a direct correlation between that sarcastic remark and me not playing again. But to be fair to Alf I also hadn't played well for England. That's not an excuse or a reason; it's just an explanation.
- Still, I had a good run: I think Stan Bowles only played twice. People like Charlie George and Tony Currie only got a couple of games. But I don't blame Alf Ramsey; I blame myself.
- All that stuff about maverick players, it was the culture of British football at the time and I don't regret for one minute my attitude towards football. I'm not speaking for any other player but I was born a free spirit and I played the game the same way. You either loved it or you hated it. I make no excuses for that and I wouldn't change a thing. Did that contribute to me to only getting nine caps? Probably.
- English football has always been scared to do the outrageous. I think you could name on one hand people like Paul Gascoigne, Rodney Marsh, Matt Le Tissier, Peter Osgood of that ilk who have been given a chance. The average England player has a great engine, hard-working. You could argue that Wayne Rooney could be that Maverick-type player and, probably, the big difference is that Wayne Rooney runs himself into the ground for the team, and I never did that, I always felt there were other players to do that. One of the biggest compliments paid to me was in Alfredo di Stéfano's book where he says that Rodney Marsh was the most gifted footballer outside of Brazil. That made me feel good. I played against his Valencia team twice and we fucking murdered them.
- But you couldn't have a team of Rodney Marshes. You'd never get the ball. I would hold my hand up and say that I was a luxury player and I make no bones about that. But I would argue the point that my generation of player underachieved. Why players like Bowles and George didn't get more caps you'd have to ask Ramsey. But I would say one thing: If you count the caps of Frank Worthington, Bowles, Tony Currie, Peter Osgood, Rodney Marsh and Alan Hudson, Carlton Palmer has got more caps than all those players combined. I think that tells you something. During Graham Taylor's time England had a midfield with Andy Sinton, David Batty, Carlton Palmer and Geoff Thomas. How the fuck are you going to win a World Cup with a team like that?

QPR set £1million limit on summer target Cox
May 14 2009 By Paul Warburton, London Informer
QPR HAVE set a limit of £1million for Simon Cox - and even that comes with strings attached.
The Fulham Chronicle was first to flag up Rangers' interest in the Swindon Town hotshot more than a month ago.
But the Robins have also got wind of interest from West Brom and Leicester - and will play hardball over the price for the 32-goal machine.
The Hoops have already said no to the £1.5m asking price for the 22-year-old - although a lot will depend on how much they eventually get for Dexter Blackstock and Lee Camp - both set to join Nottingham Forest.
Swindon boss Danny Wilson was in no doubt his goal machine was on his way, no matter what.
He said: "I'll be disappointed if he does leave, but I'm a realist, I think there's a good chance it will happen."
Rangers want to pay a flat fee of £500k up front with add-ons based on appearances and club success.
A source added: "There are plenty of potential targets. So if Swindon think they can get £1.5million for Cox, they should bite the club's arm off."
Alan Curbishley won't become Rs' next manager - because the ex-West Ham boss is preparing a court case against his former employers that would muddy the waters if he were to join QPR.
The 51-year-old is reported as wanting £3m from the Hammers in compensation - with the case not due to be heard until November.
Chairman Flavio Briatore has been away on Formula One duty - but returned this week to set the managerial agenda, which won't include Curbishley, Alan Pardew, Dennis Wise, Paul Ince, Dave Jones (Cardiff boss) - and original target Darren Ferguson, at Peterborough. Ealing Gazette
Paul Warburton, London Informer -It's all on hold until the new boss has his say
- QPR RECKON they will have appointed a new manager by this time next week - with former Burnley boss Steve Cotterill the surprise choice just ahead of three other candidates.
- However, the white smoke is far from wafting out of the Loftus Road chimney, with chairman Flavio Briatore going away to the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend to ponder through the din of F1 cars about the next man who will lead Rangers into the fast lane.
- The Fulham Chronicle has learned ex-Championship bosses Aidy Boothroyd, Jim Magilton and Colin Calderwood also have CVs on Briatore's desk, while in the meanwhile, others have ruled themselves out.
- Steve Coppell got the phone call the morning after resigning as Reading boss, having failed to get the Royals into the Championship play-off.
But the respected coach, who also has previous history in west London with Brentford, declared he wanted a three-month break from football and will go to the USA with his family for an extended holiday.
Claudio Ranieri was sacked by Juventus on Monday, but there will be no sentimental return to west London for the former Chelsea man, despite his close ties with both Briatore and sporting director Gianni Paladini.
The demands of candidates have taken up most of the board's consideration, with the winning applicant expected to wheel-and-deal with the players he inherits rather than writing then seven-figure cheques for new ones.
- As far as new squad faces go, noone is to be signed or even spoken to before the new man is in place.
- An insider said: "We've all read the rumours about Tugay from Blackburn, or Danny Webber from Bristol, but why sign anyone unless the club can be certain the new manager wants him?"... London Informer
Channel 4 Italy - Guberti's waiting for Roma Thursday 21 May, 2009
The agent of Bari star Stefano Guberti has revealed that his client refused a contract from Queens Park Rangers in the hope of joining Roma.
Guberti has been an important member of Antonio Conte's Bari side that have secured a place in Serie A next season.
The 24-year-old has become a target for a host of teams because he will become a free agent this summer.
“We are interested in Roma's project and Stefano sees them as his first choice,” Claudio De Nicola said on Radio Centro Suono Sport.
“He is a lad at the start of his career, even if he has done very well this season.
“Last week I spoke to the Roma directors and Guberti could be offered a four-year deal.
“Within a month I hope to have a deal completed. We turned down an offer from Flavio Briatore's QPR to wait for Roma.” Channel 4

CERNY WINS (SHARES) GOLDEN GLOVE AWARD
LEAGUE HONOUR GOLDEN SIX
- The leading scorers and shot-stoppers from all three divisions of The Football League are to receive PUMA Golden Boot and Golden Glove awards to mark their respective achievements in all competitions this season.
- The winner of the Golden Boot for the Championship, for the second consecutive season, is Wolverhampton Wanderers' Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. The Championship's 'Player of the Season' has notched 25 goals to see off the challenge of Swansea City's Jason Scotland (24) and Cardiff City's Ross McCormack (23).
- The Golden Glove award will be shared by Queen's Park Rangers' Radek Cerny and Paddy Kenny of Sheffield United. Both keepers recorded 19 clean sheets from 47 appearances in all competitions.
- In League 1, where 4 players topped the 30 goal mark, Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford took the Golden Boot honours after hitting the back of the net 34 times. Tranmere Rovers' Welsh international goalkeeper Danny Coyne, recorded 20 clean sheets to secure the division's Golden Glove prize.
- Grant Holt's 28 goals in his first season at Shrewsbury Town helped him win the League 2 Golden Boot by a 5 goal margin. Brentford goalkeeper Ben Hamer, who spent the season on loan at Griffin Park from Reading, kept 20 clean sheets to help secure the League 2 title for the Bees and the Golden Glove Award for himself.
- In announcing the PUMA Golden Boot and Golden Glove Award winners, Lord Mawhinney, Chairman of The Football League, said:
- "These awards give us the opportunity to recognise the goalscorers and goalkeepers who have made a very special contribution to their team's efforts this season. Each of these players has had an outstanding season and they all fully deserve this recognition."
- Roger Harrison, Marketing Director at PUMA UK, added:
- "Strikers and goalkeepers can often win a match for their team with a last minute goal or breathtaking save. These new accolades give us an opportunity to reward players of all levels - congratulations to all of the winners."
- Goals and clean sheets in The Coca-Cola Football League, Carling Cup, Johnstone's Paint Trophy and FA Cup sponsored by E.ON have all counted towards the PUMA Golden Boot and Golden Glove awards." Football League

- R's custodian Radek Cerny expressed mixed feelings following the announcement that he is the joint recipient of the Championship's Golden Glove award for the 2008/09 season.
- Awarded to the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets over the course of the campaign, Cerny topped the charts alongside Sheffield United stopper Paddy Kenny.
- The Czech custodian - who penned a two-year deal in W12 last summer - enjoyed a remarkable maiden season at Loftus Road, recording 19 clean sheets from 47 appearances in all competitions.
- However, speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk from Prague, the 35 year-old said: "I'm really pleased to win this award, but I'd much rather have won a medal for going up.
- "Keeping clean sheets is a big part of a goalkeeper's job, but I have never really kept count. I prefer to keep count of the number of wins we register, because that's what governs where you finish in the league at the end of the season.
- "We didn't win enough matches last season and that is something we need to improve next season.
- "However, I really enjoyed my first season with Rangers and I was pleased with my own form."
- Cerny reserved special praise for his team-mates too, commenting: "Defending is a team responsibility - from one to eleven, every player plays their part.
- "Defensively we are a very strong unit. Each player takes their defensive responsibilities very seriously here and that is the key to keeping things tight at the back.
- "We defend as a team and we attack as a team - so this is very much a team award."

- Knill led Bury to the League Two play-offs this season and impressed chairman Karl Oyston.
- But Holloway gave the best interview and it was an added advantage he is out of work. That means there is no compensation to pay.

New Blackpool boss Ian Holloway
- IAN Holloway will vow to shed the Seasiders' 'little club' image when he is confirmed as Pool boss this afternoon.
- The 46-year-old will return to management almost 12 months to the day after his departure from relegated Leicester City and will become Pool's 21st post-war manager.
- Steve Thompson, who was also on the shortlist for the post, is set to be Holloway's no.2.
- Of the six interviewed candidates – the others were Cambridge's Gary Brabin, Andy Ritchie, an unidentified late applicant and Bury's Alan Knill, who would have been chairman Karl Oyston's second choice – Holloway has by far the greatest experience of football at Championship level.
- Holloway will certainly enliven Bloomfield Road – he's almost as famous for his one-liners as his managerial skills.
- Holloway will take over his fifth League club in a 13-year-managerial career.
- Ten of those years have been spent at Championship level and have included two relegations (there was also a promotion from the third tier).
- His 18 seasons as a professional player on the right of midfield began in 1981 and included three stints with hometown club Bristol Rovers.
- He clocked up around 650 career games, taking in spells at Wimbledon, Brentford, Torquay (loan) and Queens Park Rangers, with whom he spent five seasons in the top flight (1991-96).
- He then cut his managerial teeth over five seasons back at Bristol Rovers, the first three of them as player-boss, during which time he stretched his appearance total for the club beyond 400.
- Those five seasons, all spent in the second tier, were highlighted by a play-off appearance in 1997-98, when the Pirates finished fifth but lost to Northampton in the semi-finals.
- After steering Rovers to seventh in 1999-2000, Holloway moved on to another of his former clubs, QPR, in February 2001 but could not save them from relegation to the third tier. It took them three seasons to bounce back, finishing runners-up to Plymouth in 2003/4.
- During his second Championship season at Loftus Road Holloway was suspended over his persistent links with Leicester City. He left in the summer of 2006, not for the Walkers Stadium but for Championship rivals Plymouth.
- In his only full season in charge at Home Park (2006-7), Argyle achieved their best finish for 20 years (11th) and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, losing to Premiership club Watford.
- Holloway's long-rumoured move to Leicester finally came to fruition in November 2007 but proved the unhappiest spell of his managerial career.
- Winning just nine of his 32 games in charge, Holloway's Foxes were relegated to the third tier for the first time ever, resulting in the manager's departure by mutual consent almost exactly 12 months ago.
- During his year out the ever-quotable Holloway has been in constant demand for media work.
- He also finds time to campaign on deaf issues – three of his four children were born deaf.

Poor Ticket Sales....An Assessment of QPR's Managerial Search...Reece Crowther Misses Out

- re a Tappa/QPR Rumour: What Tappa Said a Few Weeks ago re QPR and Managing
Dave McIntyre/BBC606 - Still in the frame
- No British manager has emerged as a clear frontrunner for the QPR job and the door is still open for the potential return of Luigi De Canio.
- By Tuesday evening no decision had been made on an appointment despite a number of possible candidates being assessed – most of them British.
- With Flavio Briatore now due to fly to Monte Carlo ahead of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, the chances of an appointment being made this week look slim.
- Former Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd is the latest man to be considered, but it seems a decision is no nearer and that the chances of a foreign coach – possibly De Canio – being installed are now growing.
- De Canio has been in the frame since Paulo Sousa’s future was under scrutiny earlier this year and the Italian has remained a strong contender while others have dropped out of the running.
- He looks like failing in his bid to save Lecce, whose relegation from Serie A would increase the chances of De Canio returning to Loftus Road.
- Keeping them up would almost certainly lead to the offer of a lucrative contract to stay put. But as things stand, De Canio will be open to offers when the Italian season finishes at the end of this month.
- There seemed a real willingness to consider British managers following the termination of Sousa’s contract in April, and perhaps Briatore will still go down that route.
- But as more potential managers from these shores fall out of contention, the chances of an overseas coach being brought in increase - although Gareth Ainsworth remains an option.
- Claudio Ranieri may be approached following his sacking by Juventus and Antonio Tapia, currently in charge of Spanish side Malaga, has suggested that QPR have been interested in him.
- And what price a famous ex-player in the Sousa mould? Paolo Maldini, whose playing career is about to end, would be a jaw-dropping appointment but has apparently indicated he will stay at AC Milan in a coaching capacity.
- That’s all speculation. What is for sure is that De Canio has been seriously considered and that none of the other possible contenders have so-far wanted or been able to secure the job.
- Briatore has attracted criticism for his running of the club but could claim that De Canio was always the man he wanted to coach the team.
- He was his choice following the sacking of John Gregory and left for personal reasons at the end of the 2007-08 season.
- That said, De Canio’s brief spell was not without its problems. His future was in doubt just weeks after he was given the job, but improved results in the second half of the season helped to shore up his position.
- He was happy working with Briatore and Gianni Paladini, which in itself made him a frontrunner for the job once it became vacant again.
- Having managed to correctly call the appointment of the last six Rangers managers, I’m not confident about getting it right this time.
- The situation is uncertain, the club don’t seem to be clear about what they want and there is always a chance that someone could be brought in by Briatore completely out of the blue.
- Sousa, for example, was hired very quickly after Ainsworth lost favour following a defeat at home to Burnley last season.
- There is always a chance that a conversation or change of plan could lead to one of the men recently linked with Rangers suddenly being announced as manager, or a new guy could pop up from nowhere.
- If that seems like I’m covering my back, it’s because I am. I'm really not sure what will happen.
- At one stage this year I would have put money on Darren Ferguson being at QPR next season and a few weeks ago I told friends the next Rangers manager might be Neil Warnock. Wrong on both counts.
- But I do now think that Gigi De Canio could well be on his way back. We shall see.
[Jordi Lopez Update]
- While Rangers wait to fill their vacancy, Jordi Lopez is waiting for his future to be resolved.
- Unlike Liam Miller, whose departure was confirmed this week, Lopez has been offered a new contract after impressing while on a short-term deal.
- The Lopez situation is a delicate one.
- There have been doubts about his fitness, making the offer of a long-term contract a potential risk.
- A one-year contract might seem the obvious answer but now the former Uefa Cup winner has arguably proved his fitness he could well attract interest from other clubs offering better terms.
- And if he were to sign for one year and impress next season, Rangers would run the risk of losing him on a Bosman free transfer 12 months from now.
- One solution could be to assume Lopez will remain a free agent for the time being at least, and allow the incoming coach/manager to have a look at him.
- Lopez’s agent, former QPR midfielder Alex Bonnot, made it clear when I spoke to him that that wasn’t the player’s preferred option.
- Bonnot is hopeful an agreement can be reached soon, although he did stress that other clubs have shown an interest in Lopez.
- A canny defensive midfielder is always useful – especially if De Canio's brand of football returns.
- But with Lopez assessing his options and Rangers looking to cut their cloth more carefully this season, this one could go either way. BBC606
Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - Ticket sales drop as fans watch and wait
- QPR are becoming increasingly desperate to fill their managerial vacancy after season ticket sales plummeted even further than anticipated.
- The Times understands that Rangers have sold barely 3,000 season tickets so far as supporters wait to learn the identity of Paulo Sousa's successor.
- Many fans feel disenchanted by Sousa's sacking and the team's general lack of on-field progress last season, but the club hope a new appointment will encourage them to dip into their pockets again.
- Last summer, the club announced they were restricting season ticket sales to 10,000 - but it looks highly unlikely that move will need to be repeated.
- In a risible and illogical statement earlier this week, Rangers announced that the 'early bird' deadline - offering fans a five per cent discount on last year's prices - had been extended to Friday due to a 'backlog' of applications.
- Meanwhile, Rangers have also confirmed a pre-season friendly away to Blue Square Premier side Oxford United on Friday July 24, kick-off 7.45pm.
- The Rs had been due to meet Oxford in a friendly last summer, but the fixture was called off." Kilburn Times
Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times on Reece Crowther- So near... now Reece is so far
- MOST players look back on a 3-0 defeat with regret, but Reece Crowther has even more reason to rue that scoreline a year later.
- For the majority, QPR's capitulation at Norwich in April 2008 has faded discreetly into the record books, but to the young goalkeeper it represents unfulfilled ambition.
- Crowther came tantalisingly close to making his first-team debut for the Rs that day - in fact the coaching staff hurriedly ordered him to warm up as they thought first choice keeper Lee Camp was about to be sent off.
But the red card was shown to Damion Stewart instead, Crowther returned to his seat on the bench and opportunity would never knock on his door again before Rangers released him a few weeks ago.
Now the 20-year-old is bidding to kick-start his career Down Under in the A-League - but is still determined to make his name in English football long-term.
"Everyone had thought Campy was going off and that night I couldn't help thinking 'that was my chance, now it's gone'," Crowther told the Times.
"That's the one thing I'll always be thinking back on, that I didn't pull on the QPR jersey in a competitive fixture. It's still bugging me that I never played in the first team and I feel I've got a score to settle.
"The game's really started to grow in Australia and I'm going out there to help build up the A-League and get experience, but I'd like to come back to the English league eventually, without a doubt.
"This is a new challenge. I had some good keepers ahead of me at QPR and it's sometimes harder to break through when you've come up via the youth team."
Both Wellington Phoenix and Adelaide FC have offered Crowther a trial period and the keeper - who was born in San Diego but grew up in Australia - hopes he will finally be able to call himself a genuine number one.
During his three years at Loftus Road, Crowther found himself behind the likes of Simon Royce, Paul Jones, Lee Camp, Radek Cerny and Jake Cole in the pecking order.
But, despite the frequent changes of manager in that period, Crowther feels the knock-on effect of working under many different specialist goalkeeping coaches was actually beneficial.
He recalled: "Tony Roberts was the coach when I arrived, he'd been the QPR goalkeeper for years and then we had Ed de Goey, who had so many caps for Holland.
"Mark Bosnich was one of my heroes when I was growing up and Tim Flowers had been an England international. So it was good for me to get so many insights into keepers who had played at a high level.
- "In a specialist position like goalkeeper, it's important to try different methods and see what works for you, and I learned different things from all of them.
- "Of course it's tough with the manager changing all the time, but it was out of my control, the same as every other player. I could only get my head down and try to impress whoever came in."
- Crowther didn't quite manage to catch anyone's eye in that never-ending queue at Loftus Road - but he may yet be back one day in the future to show QPR what they missed. Kilburn Times

HatchetMan/The Mail - For a man who wants QPR to be a success, Briatore is picking some very ordinary managers
- Flavio Briatore must like sacking managers at QPR. Why else does he keep appointing candidates who have only a slim chance of success?
- Luigi De Canio, Iain Dowie, Paulo Sousa and now Jim Magilton. They may not be the world's worst bosses, but they don't exactly spell guaranteed promotion either.
- If it is actually the case that Briatore wants to pick the team himself he should not appoint a manager at all. But if, as he claims, that is not the case, something has got to give.
- Rangers are supposed to be an upwardly mobile club and, even if they are restricted by the fact that potential managers know they won't get time to do the job properly, it is about time they went for a big hitter.

Daily Mail - EXCLUSIVE: QPR turn to axed Magilton as ex-Spurs star Calderwood loses out
- Jim Magilton is in line to make a quick return to management with QPR.
- Magilton, who was sacked by Ipswich last month, is due to have talks with the club today (Tuesday) and is expected to be given the nod over Colin Calderwood.
Former Tottenham and Scotland defender Calderwood, who is on the coaching staff at Newcastle, met with Rangers owner Flavio Briatore but Magilton is believed to be the Italian's first choice. Daily Mail

- Colin Calderwood is on the short list to take the vacant manager’s job at QPR.
The former Nottingham Forest boss is believed to be fighting it out with
sacked Ipswich manager Jim Magilton to succeed Paulo Sousa at Loftus Road. Daily Mail
Daily Mail/Simon Jones - Warning: This job could damage your future, Jim
- Jim Magilton is primed for a swift return to football with one of the most precarious jobs in Britain - manager of Queens Park Rangers.
- The richest club in the world have never been far from the headlines since the flamboyant Flavio Briatore completed his takeover in November 2007, and amiable Irishman Magilton, 40, will be well aware the job should carry a health warning.
- Briatore, who co-owns the club with Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone and multibillionaire Lakshmi Mittal, has had three managers during his short tenure and their average shelf life is around seven months.
- Magilton, sacked by fellow Championship club Ipswich less than a month ago, seems blind to the danger signs.
- Luigi de Canio lasted seven months before returning to Italy; Magilton's friend, Iain Dowie, was sacked after 15 games; then former European Cup winner Paulo Sousa left after six months - days after complaining that striker Dexter Blackstock had been loaned to Nottingham Forest without his say-so and amid accusations that Briatore was interfering too much.
- Sousa has still to resolve his controversial departure from Loftus Road.
= Although young and ambitious, Magilton, sadly, will not cut a dash with frustrated Rangers supporters who have yearned for a big-name appointment.
- Roberto Mancini, Sven Goran Eriksson and Darren Ferguson have been mentioned in the past. Indeed, the fans believe that while there is no doubt Briatore has brought glamour back to one of London's finest clubs, most of it sits in the main stand among his match-day entourage.
- Briatore's bold takeover boast that he hoped to be competing in the Champions League within four years rings hollow at the moment.
- Rises in ticket prices, perceived lack of investment in players and a series of leaks revealing an alleged heavy-handed management style have failed to endear the Italian businessman to disgruntled fans, who expected much more of their wealthy owners.
- Ipswich sacked Magilton believing he had failed in his task to achieve promotion on the back of substantial investment for a Championship club. They have since turned to Roy Keane, himself linked to QPR at one stage.
- Magilton recognises the opportunity. Attractive football has always been the domain of a midfield maestro schooled at Liverpool in the Kenny Dalglish years.
- If he can combine that with a concerted push for promotion then he will have Briatore right behind him. Maybe he will prefer that to being in front of him. Daily Mail
QPR Official Site - 92 CLUBS IN 92 HOURS
- A group of football-mad supporters, including QPR nut Stephen Howe, begin a 92 hour journey into the unknown on Wednesday evening.
- Howe, along with fellow Rangers fans Anthony Crick and Paul Martin, as well as Liverpool supporter Dean Evans, will visit all 92 Premier League and Football League Clubs in a 92 hour journey, covering some 2,450 miles.
- In association with General Motors and www.cowpr.com, the quartet will begin their quest at 9.00pm at Watford's Vicarage Road ground tomorrow (Wednesday) night.
- The big question is why?
- Well, the quartet will be raising money for Cancer Research UK, a charity very close to Howe's heart, following the loss of his mother Brenda, to the disease in 2002.
- Howe told www.qpr.co.uk: "I wanted to raise money for Cancer Research just for the fact that I know what a fantastic job they all do and also because I lost my mother to cancer and I know how badly it can affect people.
- "If I can say that I did my bit to help the cause, then I will be happy. I would just love that bit to be a big wad of cash by raising as much as possible."
- Loftus Road will be the thirteenth Club the quartet visit, with an estimated arrival time of 03.08am on Thursday morning!
- All 92 Clubs have been approached to donate something to the cause, big or small, with the signed shirts, footballs etc, due to be auctioned at a Charity Event later this year.

"But a frantic re-negotiation amid the search for the new manager has landed the ex-Fulham player until January with Bolton now paying half his £16,000-a-week wages.
If Helguson breaks down with injury, he returns straight away to The Reebok." London Informer

- ".....the club set to announce the signing of Heidar Helguson on loan from Bolton Wanderers until January. The Iceland forward, who scored the only goal in a friendly international against Malta last night, failed a medical in West London last week, but the deal was resurrected after QPR agreed to pay half his £16,000-a-week wages and Bolton agreed to take him back if he was injured during his loan spell..." - The 38 year-old, who won 51 caps for Portugal during an illustrious playing career and spent five years as assistant to Luis Felipe Scolari with the Portuguese national team, has penned a two-and-a-half year contract until the summer of 2011.

"I have great belief in my ideas and my coaching ability and I firmly believe I can achieve the objectives set by the management."
Sousa added: "I believe in playing positive, attacking football. To achieve positive results you have to maintain a focused outlook and my team will aim to do this, both for ourselves and for the fans.
"I am looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead."

-The R's will travel to Blue Square Conference outfit Oxford United for a pre-season friendly.
Rangers will head to the Kassam Stadium on Friday 24th July (7.45pm kick-off).
Chris Wilder's side finished the 2008/09 campaign in seventh place.
Wilder - who recently penned a new three year deal - turned Oxford's form around after taking over in December, with United in the bottom half of the Blue Square Premier.
A run of only three league defeats in 23 games saw the U's only miss out on a play-off place because of a controversial points deduction for fielding an unregistered player.
Ticket details will be announced in due course.

QPR1st Statement re Extension
QPR1st - Further extension to early bird announced
Written by Peter Gridneff
Sunday, 17 May 2009 19:50
- The club posted the following anouncement on the official site today.....
- Whilst the Trust welcomes any extension to the early bird cut off date we are confused as to how this decision is related to a "backlog of applications". Our understanding is that the number of renewals so far this season is significantly down on last season, on that basis alone it makes sense to extend the deadline to encourage more renewals.
- With a much lower than anticipated take up we are however suprised that a "backlog of applications" has built up and we will be asking the club to help us to understand why such a backlog is related to the decision to extend the renewal deadline. QPR1st

MARK DENNIS REMEMBERED
[From a great Guardian Series: Football - The Seven Deadly Sins)
Dennis the menace - Queens Park Rangers, 1988
- Mark Dennis was always a bit of a bad boy. So much so that he had been sent off 10 times in a 10-year career by the time he'd reached the age of 26. But then he really started to test the authorities' patience. First the QPR defender received the 11th red card of his pro career in 1987 after elbowing Ossie Ardiles in the face; he was given a 53-day ban. Then he was handed an official warning by QPR after going on holiday to Spain without club approval while recovering from knife wounds received while out one night in Croydon. Having been told he had no more "second chances", he was then sent off for a 12th time in 1988 for spitting at Fulham's Leo Donnellan in a reserve match. Dennis was quietly offloaded to Crystal Palace, his top- flight career never to recover. SM - Guardian
