Croydon Advertiser/Daniel Jones - EXCLUSIVE: Ambrose set for QPR
- DARREN Ambrose will be sold to Queens Park Rangers next week unless the consortium trying to rescue Crystal Palace agree to fund the club through the summer.
- The Advertiser understands that former manager Neil Warnock has tabled an offer of £750,000 to prize the Eagles top scorer away from Selhurst Park.
- And with no money to pay May’s wages Palace administrator Brendan Guilfoyle will be forced to sanction the transfer unless CPFC 2010 tell him otherwise.
- Guilfoyle revealed at a question and answer session with the club’s fans yesterday that the consortium - headed by Eagles fans Steve Parish and Martin Long - are unwilling to finance the club until they know a company voluntary agreement will be passed by the club’s creditors.

Championship Clubs Receiving 2.2 Million Next Season From Premiership
Watford Observer/Frank Smith
Championship clubs to receive £2.2m from Premier League next season
17th May 2010

The new agreement between the Football League and Premier League will result in Championship clubs such as Watford being paid almost £2.2m next season.
- Chairman and chief executives of Football League clubs met at Walsall’s Bank’s Stadium last week to discuss the plans and decided to agree to the revised solidarity and parachute payments proposed by the Premier League.
- Last season the base solidarity payment to all Championship clubs were meant to be £432,000 but it rose to £833,000 due to Birmingham City being promoted back to the top flight in the 2007/08 season. There was also a seperate payment made due to league position the previous campaign.

However, the new agreement means sides will now receive £2.187m but will not earn any more money based on league position or clubs being promoted back to the Premier League.
- Parachute payments to clubs relegated from the Premier League will now be paid over four years instead of two.
- For the last three years relegated sides received around £12m a season and that was set to rise to £16m this summer.
- But now instead of around £32m over two seasons, the likes of Burnley and Hull will receive £48m over four years.
- Relegated clubs will now land £16m for the first two years and then another two payments of £8m the following two seasons.
- A Football League spokesman said: "Following a frank but constructive meeting at Walsall's Banks's Stadium, Football League clubs have voted to accept the Premier League's revised solidarity and parachute payments proposals.
- "Whilst many clubs expressed concerns about the proposals, their acceptance was considered the only viable way forward.
- "The Football League will now work in good faith, with the Premier League, to ensure that the resulting contract and regulatory changes are good for both competitions and football as a whole." Watford Observer

This is Cornwall - Warnock's Queens Park Rangers set for pre-season visit to Bodmin
- BODMIN Town have been picked out as the only club in Cornwall that Championship side Queens Park Rangers will visit on their pre-season visit to the West Country.
- Boss Neil Warnock confirmed yesterday that Rangers will take on Darren Gilbert's side at Priory Park on Wednesday July 14 (7.30pm).
- And Warnock told Guardian Sport: "I've brought sides down to Cornwall in pre-season before and it's always a great night for the lads at Bodmin.
- "They always look after us and the pitch is as good as ever, so Bodmin has always been a favourite venue of mine to take a team.
- "We are going to be based at Trethorne, just along the A30, so a trip to Bodmin is ideal. We're looking forward to it."
- Bodmin chairman Mike Barbery said: "We are delighted to have QPR coming here. Hopefully we can attract a big crowd and get our pre-season off to a great start."
- The football club are believed to be involved in positive preliminary discussions with the town council at the moment to get the go-ahead to improve the dressing room area at Priory Park before QPR's visit, although Mr Barbery refused to comment on this issue. - Bodmin, who won the Cornwall Senior Cup this season and finished runners-up in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division and the League Cup, are regarded as the best non-league team in Cornwall apart from Truro City, yet have the worst-rated dressing room facilities in the league, apart from Dartmouth Town.
- It is hoped that the town council, who lease the grandstand, which incorporates the dressing rooms, to the football club, will give the green light to much-needed short term improvements.
- œ Queens Park Rangers will also be visiting fellow Carlsberg South West Peninsula League side Tavistock, on Monday July 12 (7pm), and complete their week in the area with a game against League Two side Torquay United at Plainmoor on Friday July 16.
- Warnock said: "Tavistock asked me to open some new facilities last year but I haven't had chance to bring a team down here until now.
- "They've got some fantastic facilities now and I'm looking forward to officially opening them in July."
- Rangers will use the Duchy College facilities near Callington for training purposes during their stay in Cornwall. Cornish Guardian

QPR Official Site - MACKIE FITS THE BILL
Posted on: Wed 19 May 2010
- Neil Warnock has revealed how Jamie Mackie's infectious enthusiasm and potential encouraged the R's gaffer to make him his first summer signing this week.
- The 24-year-old striker put pen to paper on a four-year contract and the QPR Manager told www.qpr.co.uk: "I am delighted to bring Jamie to the Club.

"When I first met him, there was nothing else on his mind but to play for QPR. His enthusiasm rubs off on everybody."
- Mackie scored eight times for Plymouth last season as the Pilgrims dropped out of the Championship and Warnock added: "He is an exciting young player who I have always liked.
- "Through my connections down in the south west I have got a lot of newspaper cuttings of the Plymouth games and I know he has been a stand-out striker for them this season.
- "He has got ability. I remember seeing him play against Crystal Palace's Nathaniel Clyne, and he did very, very well. I knew then that he had something about him.
- "Jamie is the sort of player we are looking for. He fits the bill."
- Warnock also revealed how the potential of the young marksman is still to be realised.
- "There's a lot more to come from him," he added. "He's not the finished article by any means but he has got pace, power and enthusiasm - and his work rate is second to none.
- "He's got a lot going for him if we can channel it in the right direction."
- Mackie can play up front or wide, and Warnock is keen to utilise his new signing's versatility on the pitch.
- "I think he can do all the jobs up front," the R's boss said. "I've seen him as a lone ranger up the middle and I've seen him wide on either flank.
- "Whatever job you ask him to do you know what you are going to get from him. He's a 100-per-center and that's why the crowds like him, because he gives you everything."

- QPR and Plymouth Official Statements re Mackie Signing

Plymouth Herald - STRIKER Jamie Mackie has left Plymouth Argyle and joined Queens Park Rangers for a fee believed to be in the region of £500,000.
- The 24-year-old will team up with former Pilgrims' manager Neil Warnock at Loftus Road.
- He becomes Warnock's first signing as Rangers boss.
- Mackie, leading scorer for Argyle last season with eight goals, has agreed a four-year deal with the ambitious west London club.
- His departure yesterday ends a two-and-a-half year stint at Home Park.
- But Mackie's move was hardly unexpected.
- The former Exeter City player had made it clear towards the end of Argyle's disastrous 2009/10 Championship season that he wanted to move on this summer.
- And now Mackie, who had one year left on his contract with the relegated Pilgrims, has got his wish, much to his delight.
- Mackie, told QPR's official website: "I'm really excited to be here.
- "I'm excited to be working for a top manager, who knows all about the Championship."
- Mackie, who was also linked with Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Derby County, will join up with his new team-mates for pre-season training in July.
- Warnock had made no secret of his admiration of Mackie's qualities and so was more than satisfied with his first signing for the R's.
- "I'm really pleased to get him in," said Warnock.
- "Obviously, with my connections down there he is a player, I've seen and heard a lot about.
- "He was a stand-out striker for them this season.
- "He's full of enthusiasm and when I first met him there was nothing else on his mind other than playing for QPR."
- Argyle head coach Paul Mariner was always resigned to losing his star striker and crowd favourite.
- Mariner said: "Jamie had expressed a strong desire to leave Argyle.
- "With his contract due to expire at the end of next season, we felt it was in the best interests of ourselves and Jamie to allow him to move now.
- "There were a number of clubs interested in acquiring his services and we are very happy with the deal that we have struck with Queens Park Rangers.
- "We thank Jamie for the commitment he has given the club during his stay at Home Park and wish him well for the future.
- "Agreeing this transfer so early in the summer gives us ample time to plan for next season without him."
- Argyle, though, will have to give Exeter one-fifth of the transfer fee, the precise amount being undisclosed at the present.
- Mackie switched to Argyle from Exeter, then a non-league side, in January 2008, for £145,000 having begun his career with Wimbledon, who later became MK Dons.
- He made his Pilgrims' debut the following month, coming on as a substitute against Barnsley and scoring twice — two of 16 career goals while at Home Park.
- In total Mackie made 102 league and cup appearances for the Greens in two-and-half seasons — his last was against Newcastle United at Home Park last month.
- The 2-0 defeat to the Magpies consigned Argyle to relegation and League One after six years in English football's second-tier.
- Mackie was a virtual ever-present in his two full seasons at Home Park and, at the end of each, was runner-up in the fans' vote for Argyle Player of the Season, to Romain Larrieu and Carl Fletcher.
- Meanwhile, Mackie's close friend Gary Sawyer has been told he will have to wait until new boss Steve Coppell has given him the once-over before he lands himself a deal with Bristol City..." Plymouth Herald

QPR Official Site EXCLUSIVE: MACKIE MOVES TO W12
- Neil Warnock has clinched his first signing as QPR Manager with the addition of Plymouth Argyle attacker Jamie Mackie.

The 24 year-old, who can play in a wide midfield role, as well as up-front, has penned a four year contract at Loftus Road, after the two Clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for his services.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Warnock expressed his delight at getting his man, commenting: "I'm really pleased to get him in.

"Obviously with my connections down there, he's a player I've seen, heard and read a lot about.

"He was a stand-out striker for them this season.

"He's full of enthusiasm and when I first met him there was nothing else on his mind other than playing for QPR."

A scorer of eight goals in all competitions last season, Mackie arrives with a fine reputation, having been the stand-out performer in Argyle's 2009/10 Coca Cola Championship campaign.

A tricky customer with two good feet, Mackie is excited about the next chapter of his career in West London, commenting: "There was a lot of speculation, but as soon as I heard QPR were interested I didn't want to hear about any other Clubs.

"I'm really excited to be here.

"I'm excited to be working for a top Manager who knows all about the Championship.

"From my knowledge of the League, I am sure QPR will be right up there next season and that was a massive draw for me."

Mackie - who was linked with a move to Middlesbrough and Burnley in January - will join up with his new team-mates in pre-season training in early July. QPR

Wales online QUEENS Park Rangers fans are plotting to ruin Cardiff’s big day out at Wembley on Saturday.

Supporters of the West London club have taken to message boards and forums to discuss a revenge attack on the Cardiff team hotel after their players were infamously disturbed by a fire alarm in the middle of the night in 2003.

On that occasion, the Bluebirds beat QPR 1-0 in extra time in the Division Two play-off final, which was held at the Millennium Stadium while the new Wembley stadium was being built.

Just hours before kick-off, the QPR squad’s preparations had been disrupted when they were awoken by an early-morning fire alarm at the Celtic Manor Hotel, near Newport, pictured, where they were staying.

The alarm went off at 3am and squad members were forced to leave their rooms. More than 200 fellow guests were evacuated while the cause was investigated.

Neil MacNamara, 39, of Nantgarw – a former Cardiff City security guard – was charged at the time with criminal damage and making a false and malicious fire call.

Now, with Cardiff having reached another end-of-season showpiece, QPR fans are threatening to use the opportunity to dish out payback on message boards and forums.

TheOnlyRangerInTheVillage said: “I am doing it, and leaving a QPR scarf, just to let them know who it was that kept them awake all night!”

Cook Pass said: “Get there and set off that fire alarm.

“Do it for Olly (Blackpool and former QPR manager Ian Holloway). Do it for Blackpool. Do it for Rangers. Do it for Yourselves”

Rtone said: “If anyone can tell me where they are staying, I will do it, and if I end up in court, I will be a national hero, and quite rightly so.”

Rodney Trotter said: “How do we find out where they are staying?”

The location of the Cardiff City team hotel ahead of Saturday’s game is not known and is likely to remain a tightly-guarded secret. Wales onLine

Low point: Middlesbrough 2 QPR 0, February 27. This defeat extends their run to 21 matches without a clean sheet, the longest record in all four divisions. A pitiful farewell for Mick Hartford, the caretaker manager, as Neil Warnock waits in the wings to take charge.

Sky Sports - Cerny wants QPR stay
Experienced keeper optimistic on promotion chances next term
By Vasek Kadlec - 17th May 2010

Goalkeeper Radek Cerny has revealed he intends to stay at Queens Park Rangers next season and believes they can mount a push for the play-offs.

The 36-year-old shot-stopper has been linked with a move to Slavia Prague in his native Czech Republic, having played there for five years at the start of his career.

But he denies that he wants to leave Loftus Road, and is optimistic on his side's chances next term.

"I have a contract with QPR and, moreover, you don't leave England if you don't have to," he told CTK.

"Our team is not so strong as to easily cruise through the Championship but the coach will be given money to make new signings, so we will see.

"I think we could be able to finish within the top six and, by that, have a chance to compete for promotion from the play-offs."

It has been an eventful season for Rangers and they finished in 13th position having seen three managers at the helm.

Jim Magilton left the club in December but his replacement Paul Hart only lasted a month and a half in the post.

Neil Warnock is now in charge and Cerny thinks they can flourish under his stewardship next term.

"We started the season well, were up there in the play-off places and were playing an attractive brand of football," he added.

"But then we had a conflict in the dressing room and the new coach wanted us to play the typical kick-and-rush style of football while we did not have the right type of players for that.

"A big number of players then arrived on loan but still it did not help us. So there was another managerial change and Mr (Lakshmi) Mittal became the majority shareholder and since that moment we began winning, played nice football and eventually finished 13th." Skysports

- Verdict: Six permanent managers have failed to live up to expectations amid talk of Flavio Briatore’s alleged interference in team selection but with the Italian now sidelined, fans will believe that they can mount a genuine challenge — assuming Warnock gets the money he will want for players."

The Times’s club-by-club analysis: the highs, lows and final words from the 2009/10 season of the 24 teams in the Championship

Barnsley

Finishing position: 18th
High point: Barnsley 3 Burnley 2, September 22. A Barclays Premier League scalp in the Carling Cup, with Hugo Colace claiming a late winner to seal the upset.
Low point: Newcastle United 6 Barnsley 1, March 6. Scoreless until the stroke of half-time, when Luke Steele, the goalkeeper, was sent off, Newcastle ran amok with five goals in 23 minutes.

Verdict: A season of change and consolidation after Simon Davey’s sacking and the arrival of Mark Robins. The play-offs looked realistic at one stage, with Barnsley rising into the top ten, but they faded badly and could have been relegated had the season been longer. Robins will shuffle his squad and look to secure a mid-table finish in his first full season in charge.

Blackpool

Le Fondre adds to his worth with late winner
Great Scott hits four as ‘pub team’ eye up final
Finishing position: 6th
High point: Nottingham Forest 3 Blackpool 4, May 11. DJ Campbell, the forward, scores a hat-trick to leave the club 90 minutes away from returning to the top tier for the first time since 1971.
Low point: Sheffield United 3 Blackpool 0, March 16. This comprehensive defeat leaves Blackpool five points adrift of the top six with only nine games remaining.

Verdict: No matter what happens at Wembley, Ian Holloway’s achievement in taking Blackpool, favourites for relegation at the start of the season, to within one win of the Barclays Premier League is a magnificent feat. Charlie Adam, the midfield player, has been a revelation and Holloway will be looking to the Scotsman to help to finish off the job on Saturday.

Bristol City

Finishing position: 10th
High point: Steve Coppell appointed as manager, April 22. The former Reading and Crystal Palace manager knows what it takes to get clubs similar in size into the top flight.
Low point: Bristol City 0 Cardiff City 6, January 26. An amazing capitulation a week after losing 1-0 to Cardiff in an FA Cup third-round replay.

Verdict: The departure of Gary Johnson in March after 4½ years was inevitable given results and reports of a dressing-room bust-up. The admirable Johnson’s reign had gone stale and too many signings had made the squad too large. Coppell is an excellent replacement and the play-offs look realistic next season. Keeping Nicky Maynard, who scored 20 league goals this campaign, is important.

Cardiff

Finishing position: 4th
High point: Possibly still to come when they take on Blackpool in the play-off final at Wembley. Ten-match unbeaten run towards the end of the season guaranteed not missing promotion chance for second campaign in a row.
Low point: Financial squabbling, within and outside of the club. Battle with the taxman is not settled but significant and imminent Malaysian investment should ease the pressure. Promotion might help, too.

Verdict: Dave Jones continues to prove that he is one of the best managers outside the top flight. A third trip to Wembley in two years is a just reward for his understated, yet hugely effective, style of leadership.

Coventry

Finishing position: 19th
High point: Peterborough United 0 Coventry City 1, March 6. Chris Coleman’s team rise to eighth after Jon Stead scores the winner.
Low point: Coventry City 0 Watford 4, May 2. The crowd finally turn on Coleman not only because of the result, or the 11-game winless run, but because Marcus Hall, a substitute, is not given a farewell appearance for the club. Coleman is sacked two days later.

Verdict: Disappointing, even after having lost Scott Dann and Danny Fox last summer and Leon Best in January. Tony Mowbray is favourite to take over, but the new manager will not have much money. Must keep Kieran Westwood, the promising goalkeeper.

Crystal Palace

Finishing position: 21st
High point: Sheffield Wednesday 2 Crystal Palace 2, May 2. Palace withstand a late onslaught from Wednesday, who fail to secure the win they need to survive and send their opponents down.
Low point: Entering administration, January 27. The team are two points outside the play-offs, but enter a relegation battle when awarded a ten-point penalty.

Verdict: Survival was paramount, but they will not be out of the woods until a takeover is completed. That may prevent a fire sale of the best players, but the likes of Neil Danns, Nathaniel Clyne and Julian Speroni may still be offloaded.

Derby

Finishing position: 14th
High points: Derby County 1 Nottingham Forest 0, January 30; Derby 3 Newcastle United 0, February 9. Successive home triumphs turn the mood as Rob Hulse bags a late winner against the traditional enemy and scores again as the champions-elect are beaten.
Low point: Derby 1, Sc*n*horpe United 4, January 9. Jeers mark the first anniversary of Nigel Clough’s appointment.

Verdict: Pretty much how Clough and the fans, who provided the second-best average home support in the division, anticipated: pruning a top-heavy squad and wage bill has been painful. Clough can be judged from this pre-season.

Doncaster

Finishing position: 12th
High point: Doncaster Rovers 1 Nottingham Forest 0, February 13. The manner of victory leaves the greatest impression.Low point: Doncaster Rovers 1 Tottenham Hotspur 5, August 26. Rovers are confident of an upset but finish up being blown away as Harry Redknapp’s side show their class. A humbling experience.

Verdict: A stand-out season for a club who continue to punch above their weight on a limited budget. Sean O’Driscoll enhanced his reputation as one of the finest young managers in the game, but that the leading scorer, Billy Sharp, is only on loan from Sheffield United is a concern.

Ipswich

Finishing position: 15th
High point: Ipswich Town 1 Derby County 0, October 31. Roy Keane’s team’s first victory, at the fifteenth attempt, one of only 12 wins in a season from which much had been expected.
Low point: Ipswich 0 Plymouth Argyle 2, March 23. Plenty to choose from, including failing to beat Peterborough United in three attempts, but this home defeat by a team destined for relegation was made worse by the presence in the visiting team’s dugout of Paul Mariner, the Ipswich legend — emphasising how far the club are from past glories.

Verdict: Keane has avoided the flak that might have been expected after assembling a very poor Ipswich squad, but a better finish will be expected next season. Hanging on to Connor Wickham is essential.

Leicester

Finishing position: 5th
High point: Leicester City 3, Nottingham Forest 0, February 27. Gaining revenge for the thrashing at the City Ground was sweet as late goals from Bruno Berner, Paul Gallagher and Andy King satisfied the majority of a sell-out 31,759 crowd.
Low point: Forest 5 Leicester 1, December 5. Welcome to the Coca-Cola Championship. Humiliation against the club’s fiercest rivals.

Verdict: After winning the League One title in his first season in charge, Nigel Pearson can take pride in reaching the play-offs at the higher level. Perhaps missing out on another promotion may help overall, allowing exciting young talent such as Jack Hobbs and King more time to develop.

Middlesbrough

Finishing position: 11th
High point: Queens Park Rangers 1 Middlesbrough 5, December 5. The highlight of the season, even though it proves illusory.
Low point: Gareth Southgate’s dismissal, October 20. The timing of the decision to get rid of the manager, immediately after a 2-0 victory over Derby County, was not ideal.

Verdict: Southgate’s departure ensured that this was a transitional season for Middlesbrough, who have a very different feel under Gordon Strachan’s management. Another summer of upheaval beckons, with the Scot eager to inject experience into a first-team squad that did not adapt adroitly to Championship football. With only one more year of parachute payments to come, what happens next is crucial.

Newcastle

Finishing position: 1st
High point: Promotion, April 5. Return to top flight was confirmed before the home game against Sheffield United.
Low point: The Kevin Keegan tribunal verdict and sportsdirect.com@St James’ Park, although after announcing their plan to sell the naming rights to the stadium, it never happened.

Verdict: Returning to the Barclays Premier League at the first attempt was an excellent achievement given the uncertainty of last summer and a testament to the renewed spirit of unity at Newcastle. With finances tight on Tyneside, more will be required next season and Chris Hughton will need to demonstrate some imagination in the transfer market.

Nottingham Forest

Finishing position: 3rd
High point: West Bromwich Albion 1, Nottingham Forest 3, January 8. Probably the best performance from a Championship team this season, with Radoslaw Majewski scoring a gorgeous volley as Forest extend their record unbeaten away run.
Low point: The loss through injury of Paul McKenna for the run-in. Without their midfield anchor and with the brilliant away form gone, Forest stayed in the promotion race by going a record 20 home games unbeaten.

Verdict: Overachieved, even after investment in the squad last summer. A team who just avoided relegation the year before played wonderful football and should count their blessings they avoided a premature promotion.

Peterborough

Finishing position: 24th
High point: Peterborough United 4 Cardiff City 4, December 28. Despite being 4-0 down at half-time, the team produce a stirring comeback, capped by a Josh Simpson’s last-gasp equaliser.
Low point: Sc*n*horpe United 4 Peterborough 0, March 23. The team’s deficiencies are laid bare by a team prospering on a restricted budget.

Verdict: After delivering back-to-back promotions to a club with no expectations of second-tier status, Darren Ferguson deserved more time in which to attempt to avoid relegation. His dismissal in November solved nothing. Mark Cooper and Jim Gannon could not halt the slide, and Gary Johnson became the fourth manager of a wasted season.

Plymouth

Finishing position: 23rd
High point: Home Park is announced in December as a host stadium if England win their bid for the 2018 World Cup.
Low point: The Times reveals in the same month that Argyle are under a transfer embargo because of unpaid debts.

Verdict: Financial and footballing problems went hand in hand, with Paul Sturrock, then Paul Mariner, without the funds to improve a weak squad that never really looked like escaping the drop. Mariner has reverted to his former role as first-team coach after winning only seven of 29 games and the club aim to appoint a new manager towards the end of the month, but money will be even tighter.

Preston

Finishing position: 17th
High point: Leicester City 1 Preston North End 2, September 26. OK, there are 37 games to go after this, but the victory leaves the club third in the table.
Low point: Reading 4 Preston 1, May 2. The sacking of Alan Irvine prompted the arrival in January of Darren Ferguson, who insists there is time to qualify for the play-offs. But this defeat sums up his first four months in charge.

Verdict: A poor season and much of the blame must be directed towards the board for the hasty decision to dismiss Irvine, seven months after the Scot had led the club to the play-offs. With Danny Welbeck and Matt James poised to return on loan from Manchester United, can Ferguson engineer a promotion push next season?

QPR

Finishing position: 13th
High point: Derby County 2 Queens Park Rangers 4, October 24. Fans talk of a return to the top flight after scoring four goals for the third successive match to move into a play-off place.

Verdict: Six permanent managers have failed to live up to expectations amid talk of Flavio Briatore’s alleged interference in team selection but with the Italian now sidelined, fans will believe that they can mount a genuine challenge — assuming Warnock gets the money he will want for players.

Reading

Finishing position: 9th
High point: Liverpool 1 Reading 2 (aet), FA Cup third-round replay, January 13. Defeat at Anfield beckoned until, in time added on in regulation play, Gylfi Sigurdsson slotted in a penalty. Shane Long did the rest in extra time to earn a deserved victory.
Low point: The dismissal of Brendan Rodgers, the manager, December 16. Rodgers found it hard to live in the shadow of Steve Coppell, his illustrious predecessor, but appeared to be turning the corner when the axe fell.

Verdict: In 23rd place in late January but they made a remarkable late surge for the play-offs under Brian McDermott. The former chief scout has to keep the momentum going next season but has little hard cash in the pot for squad strengthening.

Sc*n*horpe

Finishing position: 20th
High point: Sc*n*horpe United 2 Newcastle United 1, October 20. A game that was difficult to comprehend. Both Sc*n*horpe goals were scored by Martyn Woolford, who was playing non-League football two years ago.
Low point: Leicester City 5 Sc*n*horpe 1, February 13. Needing points to survive, Sc*n*horpe capitulated, much to the chagrin of Nigel Adkins, the manager.

Verdict: A remarkable achievement for a club who survive on crowds averaging 7,000 and a budget that is the lowest in the Championship. Adkins deserves his chance at a bigger club, but appears happy to continue working miracles at Glanford Park, where the likes of Woolford, Gary Hooper and Matt Sparrow have excelled.

Sheffield United

Finishing position: 8th
High point: Sheffield United 3 Sheffield Wednesday 2, September 18. The biggest game of the season and the side cruise into a three-goal lead before the interval. Then the inevitable Wednesday onslaught falls just short.
Low point: Sheffield United 1 Port Vale 2, August 11 (Carling Cup, first round). Humiliation and a warning that United may not be as good as they thought.

Verdict: Eighth was a fair reflection on the season. United have gone backwards, irrespective of the injury problems. More worrying is the prospect of losing influential players such as Chris Morgan, Nick Montgomery and Paddy Kenny.

Sheffield Wednesday

Finishing position: 22nd
High point: Barnsley 1 Sheffield Wednesday 2, January 16. Alan Irvine’s first game in charge after the dismissal of Brian Laws brings a priceless derby victory to ease relegation fears.
Low point: Sheffield Wednesday 2 Crystal Palace 2, May 2. Wednesday need to win to avoid relegation but are always playing catch-up and get what they deserve.

Verdict: Wednesday let in too many goals and scored too few. Replacing Laws with Irvine was correct but the Scot could only do so much. Not for the first time, the club appear to have too many players on high wages. It promises to be a summer of upheaval.

Swansea

Finishing position: 7th
High point: Defensive resilience, apart from the 5-1 defeat away to Blackpool in March. A tough team to break down, thanks to the organisational skills of Paulo Sousa, the manager.
Low point: Simply could not score goals. The goalless draw with Doncaster Rovers at home on the last day of the season said it all. Only one goal would have taken them into the play-offs.

Verdict: Must find a prolific goalscorer from somewhere, otherwise another season of frustration beckons. Future of Sousa has to be resolved sooner rather later; close-season speculation can be ruinous.

Watford

Finishing position: 16th
High point: Watford 3 Queens Park Rangers 1, December 7. Skill, courage and panache as Watford move into the play-off places, amid financial uncertainty. Lloyd Doyley scores his first goal in his 269th match.
Low point: Threat of administration, December 16. Shares are suspended after Jimmy Russo, the former chairman, demands repayment of a £4.88 million loan. The club stave off administration with hours to spare.

Verdict: Over the worst. Shareholders will be asked to endorse proposals to improve the club’s finances today, but players will still have to be sold, if not on the level of last summer.

West Bromwich Albion

Finishing position: 2nd
High point: Swansea City 0 West Bromwich Albion 2, March 16. This win brings promotion within touching distance, a rearguard action backed up by late goals from Graham Dorrans and Ishmael Miller.
Low point: West Brom 1 Nottingham Forest 3, January 8. Roberto Di Matteo’s side are blown away by their promotion rivals, but while West Brom win their next nine home games, Forest fail to win away again.

Verdict: After a fourth promotion in nine years, West Brom are entertaining but must tighten up defensively. Jeremy Peace, the chairman, wants to invest in higher salaries more than transfer fees.

Independent - Tower power: Old pals' act for Evatt and Ollie after settling scores

Working relationships have been known to start better than the one between Ian Evatt and the man who will send him out at Wembley next Saturday with a friendly, encouraging slap on the back.

It was a few postcodes round the North Circular at Queens Park Rangers that the Blackpool central defender first became acquainted with the odd-ball managerial style of Ian Holloway five summers ago.

Evatt was on no more than a list of potential targets at Loftus Road when Holloway's family holiday was interrupted by a call from an excited chairman telling him the player's £150,000 move from Chesterfield was in the bag.

Holloway was angry the deal had gathered such momentum in his absence, told the player there was a delay and later admitted there were teething troubles even once the forms had been completed. The union didn't last. The manager went first (on gardening leave, then to Plymouth Argyle) and the player followed him out of Shepherd's Bush by joining Blackpool on an extended loan that preceded their promotion from League One via the 2007 play-offs. There were clearly no hard feelings, though, when the two were reunited at Bloomfield Road last summer.

"The way the gaffer likes to play is fine for me," said Evatt. "We play an open game which might not sound ideal for a central defender but he enjoys seeing us all on the ball. I love passing it out from the back and we're going into games knowing we have a lot of firepower and the ability to set things up for the forwards. The games against Nottingham Forest showed we are scoring plenty of goals and have a firm belief we can cause any team problems."

Evatt is 6ft 2in but baulks slightly at the suggestion that his four goals this season could have come only from set-pieces. Looking forward to next Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship play-off final against Cardiff City, he added: "Actually the one I scored against them in the League was a curler. I don't only head them in!"

Blackpool had already spent the first 10 and a bit of their 39 successive years out of English football's top flight when Evatt was born in Coventry in 1981. Having missed out on a ticket when his home-city club won the 1987 FA Cup, he made it to Wembley for the first time when Yeovil lost to Blackpool three years ago and has good vibes about this return visit.

"Keith Southern and me were saying a few weeks ago that the season was starting to feel just like that one in 2006-07. We have finished so strongly and our confidence is second to none."

The figures back him up. Three seasons ago, Blackpool won nine games out of 10 immediately before the final; this time it's eight out of 10 and Ian Evatt – "a fantastic lad" in the words of his manager – stands within touching distance of accompanying him into the Premier League.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS 6, CHELSEA 0

Easter Monday, March 31 1986 - Canon League Division One

A glorious Easter Monday as Rangers smashed home six goals to kill off Chelsea's League title hopes.

The R's went into this match in 14th place in the table. Chelsea were fourth and needed the points to rekindle their faltering challenge for the championship - especially after a 4-0 defeat against West Ham at Stamford Bridge on the Saturday.

It was a windy morning with intermittent rain showers peppering our Omniturf pitch, which had been much-criticised by Chelsea chairman Ken Bates earlier in the season.

For the first time in the history of this fixture, advance ticketing arrangements meant that there were no Chelsea fans infiltrating the Loft terrace. Cash admission was not permitted on the day so Rangers enjoyed terrific support from the all-ticket home end.

It took the Super Hoops only eight minutes to open the scoring. John Byrne's initial shot was charged down but Gary Bannister followed up to drill into the bottom right hand corner from an acute angle at the School End.

Cries of "Bann-is-ter...Bann-is-ter...Bann-is-ter..." (to the American marching tune) and "You're Not Singing Anymore..." rang out from the Loft terrace as the 4,000 Chelsea fans at the other end looked on in stunned silence.

Rangers doubled their advantage on 25 minutes. Byrne was involved again with a right wing cross, Terry Fenwick nodded the ball on and Bannister arrived in the six yard box to head home. A very noisy rendition of "Singing The Blues..." followed from the Loft.

A minute before the break, John Byrne picked up possession just inside the Chelsea half and lost his marker with a deft drop of the shoulder. He then dribbled past another four startled defenders amidst an orgy of skill before lashing into the net from just inside the box.

It was the most spectacular R's goal of the season and our fans rejoiced with versions of "John-ny Byrne, John-ny Byrne, John-ny Byrne" (against using the marching tune) and "Easy...Easy.."

The fourth came on 58 when Bannister tore away from the shambolic Chelsea back line and sent a low bullet-like shot into the right hand corner. Even the QPR stewards on the side of the pitch at the Loft End jumped up and down to celebrate. Meanwhile, the electronic scoreboard declared: "GARY HAT-TRICK BANNISTER"

Then on 64 minutes, Bannister whipped in a low cross from the right and Byrne provided a crisp finish for goal number five with the Chelsea rearguard in shreds. The Loft boys bounced around in unison with chants of "Blame The Pitch, Blame The Pitch, Blame The Pitch..." directed at the ashen-faced Ken Bates in the main stand.

Chelsea had striker David Speedie sent off two minutes later for flattening Ian Dawes with his elbow. The Rangers fans waved theatrically while singing "Bye Bye Speedie, Bye Bye Speedie..." (to the tune of Auld Lang Syne) as he plodded dejectedly from the arena.

The sixth blue and white hooped goal in Chelsea's net came in the 82nd minute. Substitute Leroy Rosenior ran from the halfway line through a wide open defence before firing firmly past despairing goalkeeper Steve Francis. The jubilant Loft bellowed "We Want Seven...We Want Seven..." as the visiting fans headed for the exits.

Chelsea manager John Hollins said afterwards: "It's been a very bad Easter for us, but I want to give QPR full credit for their performance." QPR

- QUEENS Park Rangers will be Crawley Town's next big time opponents during pre-season.
Rangers' boss Neil Warnock will bring his side to Broadfield Stadium on Thursday, July 29.

- Warnock is expected to spend big in the summer transfer window to put a squad in place worthy of challenging for a place in the Premier League.
- Warnock said: '"I always like my lads to get a real test before the big kick-off.
- "We go down to the West Country early but when we get closer to our opening league fixture I could think of no better place to get a test than play against a team managed by Steve Evans.
- "I took my Palace team to Crawley and it was a proper game, lots of good football, very competitive and of course they have an excellent pitch and facilities, more of the same will do nicely."
- A delighted Evans said: "Queens Park Rangers is a great fixture for us. After many conversations with Neil Warnock I can only thank him.
- "They are a big traditional London club with some outstanding supporters and I would imagine Neil has had hundreds of requests for a pre-season match so we are delighted, perhaps even fortunate to secure this fixture."

- Championship club Queens Park Rangers have confirmed they will bring a full strength R's team to The Broadfield Stadium on Thursday 29th July 2010 as part of their pre season schedule.
- The Reds are already scheduled to host a full strength Millwall on Saturday 10th July 2010 so Steve Evans men look like they are in for an exciting but tough pre season campaign.
- R's boss Neil Warnock will bring his troops home from a pre season trip and head to The Broadfield Stadium where he believes his team will get a solid test close to the start of the new season.
- Rangers are expected to be one of the favourites for promotion to The Premiership next term under new boss Neil Warnock and he is expected to spend big in the summer transfer window to put a squad in place that is worthy of challenging for a place in The Premiership, of course described by many football experts as the best league in world football.
- Speaking after agreeing to bring the R's to The Broadfield Stadium Neil said, '' I always like my lads to get a real test before the big kick off. We go down to the West Country early but when we get closer to our opening league fixture I could think of no better place to get a test than play against a team managed by Steve Evans.
- '' Our pre season schedule is still to be finalised but it is coming together very nicely. I took my Palace team to Crawley and it was a proper game, lots of good football, very competitive and of course they have an excellent pitch and facilities, more of the same will do nicely''.
- Steve Evans was delighted to get the fixture. He said, '' Queens Park Rangers is a great fixture for us. After many conversations with Neil Warnock I can only thank him. They are a big traditional London club with some outstanding supporters and I would imagine Neil has had hundreds of requests for a pre season match so we are delighted, perhaps even fortunate to secure this fixture''.
- '' Neil likes his team to get competitive matches late in pre season and he knows he will get that here. Queens Park Rangers supporters are in for a very exciting season under Neil Warnock, Mick Jones (R's Assistant) and Keith Curle (R's First Team Coach), they will be recruiting some very talented players and I for one look forward to seeing them here at our Stadium in July''.
- As advised the match is on Thursday 29th July 2010, the action will kick off at 7.45pm. Crawley

The Independent/Neil Warnock - QPR in Italy Pre-Season
"...We start pre-season training on 1 July and I'll be taking the team to Cornwall and Italy. We're playing two games there, but the real reason we're going is so I can get three suits from the tailor that Gianni [Paladini, QPR chairman] uses..." The Independent

Briatore Still Owns 20% of QPR - Arabian Business - Flavio of the month by Joanne Bladd
"...Still, in three years Briatore might be looking for a fresh diversion. His other passion, west London football club QPR, was shunted to the back burner in February when he resigned his position as chairman after three years.
"I didn't walk away, I just decided to step down as chairman because, being honest, I didn't have the time. But I still hold my [20 percent] shares," he says.
And does he have any plans to sell them?
"No, no. I'm not in talks at the moment," he blusters. "But everything is for sale, everything is to buy. If you sell, you sell everything, you don't sell 20 percent

Arabian Business - Flavio of the month
by Joanne Bladd

Friday, 14 May 2010
"Banished from Formula 1, exiting football; what's next for sport's most flamboyant figure? Ex-Renault boss Flavio Briatore on scandals, starting over and setting up shop in Dubai.
It doesn't take long for flavio briatore's famed volcanic temper to make an appearance. Squashed into a suite at the back of his new Billionaire fashion store, circled by prowling press, an inept photographer elbows over a glass of water. Seconds later, a plate clatters noisily to the floor. Ex-Formula 1 boss Briatore erupts.
"Who," he bellows, like an enraged bull, "are these f***ing hooligans?"
Wild-haired - and a little wild-eyed - Briatore doesn't disappoint. From his blue-tinted sunglasses to his embroidered slippers, he is in person the same flamboyant, multimillionaire, supermodel-magnet of the headlines. And while he might be hotheaded, he's also a hot ticket, bringing his Midas touch to bear on everything from football, to racing to couture clothing.
It's the latter that has brought him to Dubai, to host the launch of his wincingly expensive men's fashion line, Billionaire, in a franchise deal with UAE-based BinHendi Enterprises. The Dubai Mall boutique, kitted out in black leather and crystal, is one of nineteen outposts worldwide and the first in the Middle East....
"...Much has been made of Briatore's potential return to Formula 1 in 2013. Coyly, the man himself won't rule it out. "When I stopped in 1996 I said I would never go back. I went back in 2000," he says, rolling his eyes. "You know, life is never-say-never. I have open eyes. I still have all my friends in Formula 1 - my best friend is in [the sport], Bernie.
"But I'm not looking for a job. It's nice to see Formula 1 from the side for once. You take away the emotion and you are a much better judge of the business."
Still, in three years Briatore might be looking for a fresh diversion. His other passion, west London football club QPR, was shunted to the back burner in February when he resigned his position as chairman after three years.
