Thirty Years ago: July 1977, Dave Sexton Resigned as Manager of QPR ending three great years at Loftus Road. Leaving QPR, Sexton was originally set to be head coach at Arsenal; instead he took over as manager of Manchester United (replacing Tommy Docherty). Sexton's replacement as QPR manager was Frank Sibley
DAVE SEXTON
Sexton had joined QPR in October 1974 (a couple of weeks after being axed by Chelsea) replacing Gordon Jago (who himself moved on to Millwall). Sexton inherited a team which contained among others, Stan Bowles, Dave Thomas, Gerry Francis and Phil Parkes. (And Frank McLintock and Dave Webb, and Dave Clement and Ian Gillard and Don Givens, among others!)
In his first season at QPR,1974-1975, Sexton guided QPR to First Division safety and brought to QPR Don Shanks and Don Masson ("the new Johnny Giles").
The next season, 1975-1976 - The "Championship season" saw Johnny Hollins and Peter Eastoe arrive.
Sexton's final season, saw the team struggle in the League, but reached the UEFA Cup Quarter Finals with Bowles breaking scoring records; and QPR also reached the League Cup Semi Final (going out in the replay at Highbury).
FRANK SIBLEY
If any player epitomized QPR, it was Frank Sibley. QPR's youngest player to play in the first team at 15). Career ended at 23 by injury. Then was coach at QPR under various managers: Gordon Jago and Dave Sexton. He was QPR manager for just one season. Then he was replaced by Alec Stock/Steve Burtenshaw. Sibley returned as coach under Venables. Then Alan Mullery. When Mullery was sacked, Sibley was Caretaker manager for the second half of the season. Sibley was coach under various subsequent QPR managers.
