Flashback: 36 -Years Ago Today, Stan Bowles' First QPR Hattrick-
- Thirty-six years ago today: February 17, 1973, Stan Bowles scored his first QPR hattrick in a 5-0 win against a very poor Swindon team at Loftus Road. (Francis and Givens were the other QPR scorers). Swindon had recently sold Don Rogers and had Mick McGovern making his debut after his 10,000 pound transfer from QPR.
QPR's team that day: Parkes, clement Mancini Hazell Watson - Venables Francis Leach, Thomas Bowles Givens.
Eight Years Ago Today: Gerry Francis' QPR Beats Barnsley - After Francis Had Resigned
- Eight Years ago, today, in the aftermath of Gerry Francis' announced resignation (and with Gerry Francis still in charge), QPR beat Barnsley 2-0 at Loftus Road. The QPR Team: Miklosko, Perry, Rose (Baraclough 66), Ready, Darlington, Wardley, Kulcsar, Peacock, Connolly (Plummer 89), Crouch, Kiwomya. Subs Not Used: Harper, Ngonge, Scully.
And the Match Report: Sporting Life, February 17, 2001 QPR 2 Barnsley 0
- Battling QPR gave departing manager Gerry Francis the perfect send-off as they deservedly grabbed all three points with a goal in each half against Barnsley.
Francis decided to call it a day yesterday after a difficult two-and-a-half-year second spell in the Loftus Road hot-seat.
But he would have been heartened by a Rangers side who were outplayed for the first half hour but came back strongly to out-work the disappointing Tykes.
The first goal came three minutes into first-half injury time. Karl Connolly's corner was flicked on by Karl Ready to the far post where Chris Kiwomya looped in a header which foxed keeper Kevin Miller and fell into the opposite corner of the net.
It was just the boost Rangers needed as they attempted to claw their way off the bottom of Division One.
For the opening half hour it had been the visitors calling the shots as they dominated possession.
As early as the third minute Chris Barker crossed to the near post for Isiah Rankin to get in a header - but although the ball beat Ludek Miklosko it slipped inches wide of the QPR goal.
Martin Bullock was denied a clear run on goal on 13 minutes when he galloped past two defenders into the box only to be denied by a brilliantly timed sliding tackle by Matthew Rose.
And Neil Shipperley twice produced decent efforts when he header over Steve Hayward's cross and then hit a firm shot from 20 yards straight at keeper Miklosko.
But Rangers weathered the storm and as the half wore on began to find gaps in the Tykes defence.
On 41 minutes a sweeping move from left to right saw Jermaine Darlington cross towards Stuart Wardley - only for Barker to make a desperate last-ditch interception.
A minute later Connolly's pass into the box went through a crowd of players before arriving at Wardley on the far post. His shot was well struck but Miller made a brilliant point-blank save.
The goal in injury time gave QPR some confidence and they came out for the second half looking to add to their lead.
On 51 minutes Crouch chased down Wardley's long ball forward to get in a tackle on the Barnsley keeper - but as he ran in on goal Miller got back to clear for a corner.
From the resulting kick Connolly picked out Crouch, who headed against the crossbar.
But there was no stopping the pair combining for a vital second goal after 62 minutes.
Kiwomya forced Brian O'Callaghan to concede the corner and when Connolly swung the ball in Crouch met it with a firm header which flew into the net for his 10th goal of the season.
QPR looked to wrap things up on 73 minutes when George Kulcsar put Gavin Peacock away in the box - but Miller came out well to block his attempted chip.
It was a nervous last 10 minutes for QPR and Barnsley carved out a couple of chances.
First Mitch Ward forced a fine save from Miklosko with a 25-yard shot then Lee Jones put in Bullock on the left edge of the box - but he blasted woefully wide.
But this was Rangers' day and at the final whistle the supporters were toasting the result which lifts QPR off the bottom of the table - and cheering boss Francis, who came on to the pitch at the end to wave farewell to the fans.
Teams:
QPR: Miklosko, Perry, Rose (Baraclough 66), Ready, Darlington, Wardley, Kulcsar, Peacock, Connolly (Plummer 89), Crouch, Kiwomya. Subs Not Used: Harper, Ngonge, Scully. Goals: Kiwomya 45, Crouch 62.
Barnsley: Miller, Regan, O'Callaghan, Chettle, Barker, Rankin (Dyer 46), Ward, Hayward, Bullock, Jones, Shipperley. Subs Not Used: Walker, Thomas, Neil, Brown.
