Richard Langley Looks Back - Kilburn Times
THIS week I'm going to do my best to answer a few more of your questions:
..... Which coaches or managers have been the most influential in your career?
I'd have to start with Gerry Francis because he gave me my opportunity and showed me a lot of faith. You need soemone to have that belief in you when you're young and Gerry stuck with me and gave me the confidence to believe I could have a good career.
Then Ian Holloway came along and he reinforced that. I was injured when he came in and he was great in helping me get back to fitness, always saying 'Richard needs time, he'll be a great player'.
Ollie and Kenny Jackett were a great team - they did so much to bring that family spirit into the club.
I enjoyed working under Lennie Lawrence at Cardiff as well. Ollie was more defensive minded, really, whereas Lennie was all about getting on the ball and creating chances.
Which was the greater thrill - your debut for your club or your country?
The minute your professional career starts is incredible. One of the players phoned up and told me it was on Teletext that I was starting against Barnsley.
Most of my family managed to get down to Loftus Road in time to see the game and see me score too, which was an unbelievable feeling.
My international debut was at Loftus Road as well, against Nigeria in 2002, and that was a great feeling too, but nothing beats your first match as a professional footballer. Kilburn Times
Gorkss Perspective - Kilburn Times/Ben Kosky - "Gokss: hungry Wolves will be our yardstick
- KASPARS Gorkss believes QPR must match Wolves' endeavour if they are to follow in their footsteps and earn promotion next year.
- Rangers were again cast in the role of awkward party guests on Saturday as a 1-0 defeat ensured promotion to the Premier League for Mick McCarthy's men.
- The Rs defender, who completed the game with a thick bandage to protect the stitches in a head wound, reflected: "Fair play to Wolves - I thought they played with a lot of enthusiasm and congratulations to them.
- "I think the one thing that stands out about Wolves is the 100 per cent effort in every game. They chase every ball, they work really hard, harder than others and that's what we need to do next year.
- "Maybe then the other things will come. Obviously our goal this season was to go up, but hopefully next year at this time we are the ones who go up and our fans will be the ones celebrating."
- The result at Molineux meant QPR dropped to 11th in the Championship and cannot now finish higher than ninth place, even if they win their last two games against Plymouth and Preston.
- Nevertheless, Gorkss insists the Rs will not be treating those fixtures lightly as they aim to set down some kind of marker for the following season.
- "Hopefully we can get two wins to finish the season on a high," he added. "I think winning is a habit and you can't ever say 'this game doesn't matter, but the next one does'.
- "The next one against Plymouth is our last home game, so it matters for us to say thank you for the season to our fans and end on a good note at Loftus Road. Kilburn Times
Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - Wolves 1 QPR 0
- "IT'S a shame Flavio Briatore wasn't at Molineux on Saturday - he would have had the perfect opportunity to learn from a well-run football club.
- A club where the board have backed their manager, allowing him to build a promotion-winning team over three years, developing shrewd buys from the lower leagues alongside the occasional big-money signing of a proven goalscorer like Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
- A club where players seem completely committed to the cause and where loyal supporters have been drawn closer to their team rather than feeling alienated by rebranding and ticket price increases.
- Welcome to Wolverhampton Wander-ers - everything QPR are not and, under Briatore's regime, probably never will be.
- In fairness, the vast majority of the Rangers side did their best to delay Wolves' celebrations, but were deservedly defeated by Ebanks-Blake's strike just after half-time....Kilburn Times
